… which led me to my newest passion, DOMi and J D BECK, two musical prodigies who play in the jazz/hip hop space.

Good vid. Me being me, I want to do more than that. So here's another suggestion on support. Fan art.
This may be more a thing among certain communities, typical the anime gamers. Surprisingly, a good way to get the word out is to do some form of work influenced by the music. Of course, copyright laws do inhibit the arts. When there is no inhibition, there's a conversation. A conversation that can lead to people finding out about music they may never have heard of.
As to whether the art in question is sketching, sculpture, performative dance, animation, or whichever, that I leave to the artists and how the music inspires them.

    • @ESP77769
      @ESP77769 14 днів тому +2

True, Andy. Artists need to know the most profitable way to help them. There has to be a new streaming service that pays out fairly to artists, especially ones who don’t have the “popularity” of the larger artists. Also, there should be financial adjustments for the real musicians and songwriters, instead of the AI “music” that took ZERO talent. That’s the difference between “content” and music. Thank you Andy, for all you do, and your contribution to get the great music from our era to the world!!

Now I'm 50 minutes in. Andy you told about the place down the road from your house that brings in artists that normally wouldn't go out of the way to play a small venue. I'd like to give a shout out to a similar venue in my neck of the woods - Randy Wood's Pickin' Parlor in Bloomingdale GA, between where I live in Statesboro and Savannah. Randy is an old school luthier of primarily acoustic guitars and mandolins and he has a small room that for around $25 anyone can come see national and international high quality acoustic based acts. Some of the virtuosos who have graced that small stage (and continue to) include Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith, and Doyle Dykes. A fabulous place hosted by a maker of fine acoustic instruments.

In general those streaming services are only really lucrative for the major artists that have a large slice of the finite "pie" and, for many platforms, the shareholders. About 95% of the music I listen to is by artists out of the mainstream. Because I like to support the artists, and because I prefer LPs and CDs (with the artwork, liner notes/recording & personnel info/better sound quality) and because I can afford it, my living room is crowded with shelves reflecting a lifetime of collecting LPs, CDs and 45s. I doubt I will ever join a streaming service. I do however use UA-cam to get an initial listen of something that someone suggests.

What an interesting video. The issue I have with a lot of modern music is that it is computer generated and the vocals sound robotic, which for me, takes away the emotional element. Personally, I would rather hear the occasional fault in someone’s voice as this is what makes it human. With regard to supporting artists, I typically buy digital downloads after listening to an album on the same streaming service from where the album can be purchased. Many of the bands are not well known so I have no issue with paying the equivalent cost of a CD. I also like the option of being able to pay more when downloading music from Bandcamp, which I do occasionally.

My first year at university a professor asked a bunch of us students to his house. He played Frank Sinatra. Radiohead released In Rainbows in 2007 using the ' pay what you want' strategy. It turns out it was still very profitable for them because many people paid a ' fair price' for the album. And the people who couldn't afford to pay much could still listen to the album for nothing. Win-win there. But Lily Allen had a point when she said that the band could make that move because they didn't risk as much as an up and coming artist or band, who doesn't have the fan base and financial ease yet.

Very funny rant Andy, but there's some truth in it as well. That's why Sleaford Mods resonate with a lot of people. We can all shout at clouds and feel impotent about things, but every generation needs something or someone to articulate those feelings. First time I heard Jason Williamson was like when I first heard Chuck D back in the day and as a 63 year old it was thrilling to hear the same sort of righteous anger that first inspired me back in the day with punk. Also I've been encouraged by the amount of young people at their gigs, I thought it wold be full of old gits like me. The success of Ren has also been encouraging. Crucially as well as being a huge talent, he understands you tube. A lot of his success has been built on reactors, crucially he doesn't block them. It's how I discovered him. Some of these reactors are fake, irritating and the pausing with some of them can drive you mad admittedly although I understand why they have to do it. There are some really good ones out there though who've introduced me to stuff. I honestly think some of the artists miss a trick although often it's the record companies that block rather than the artist. Watching some young kid react to something old that you might have heard a thousand times before can be a beautiful thing. It reminds you how you felt the first time you heard it, we tend to get jaded as we get older. Watched a coupl've kids the other day reacting to Gimme Shelter and their excitement was a joy to behold. If you really like something buy the physical product. Popular wisdom would have it no ones buying cds/records but I want something tangible I can hold in my hands.

We mustn't confuse "genetic" with "congenital". The way our genes express is congenital, it's developmental. This is why twins are never identical despite having identical genes. It's why siblings can be radically different despite shared genetic inheritance. Etc...

And of course that Temu ad came on in the middle of the greatest rant in history. You are making Scott (The Prog Corner) sound like he might be on Prozac.

When I first moved to Austin in 88 was easy to support band. It was a live music capital of the world. Minimal cover to get in anywhere in South by Southwest was just getting started. probably 500 bands playing every night. In the city of 600,000. . There were thousands of songwriters here .Aqua fest was a big festival. I played drums in a loud Irish band play there. Imagine that now.
If you like the band, then you bought the cassette and later their CD and spread it among your friends. Even though our music was much better than in Nashville, they were based on publishing and we were based on performance, so we shriveled and died.
Covering George Floyd were the last nail in our coffin.
Aqua fest is gone. SXSW is all commercial. And based on identity politics

You captured me. Sorry it has to be the free patreon membership but my partner and me are 'living' on half a single pension ... plus my Spotify royalties from the 10 or so streams I get per month :)

Interesting side note in regards to the man you mentioned who contacted kkk members.
His name is Daryl Davis. He was an old friend of a girl I was dating back in the early 1980’s.
He asked us to come and check out his band that was playing at a small club nearby.
It was a cover band of Chuck Berry and Elvis. Daryl did all the Chuck Berry covers and he had another singer who was basically an Elvis impersonator.
A bit odd you would think, but they were actually very good. Very fun and funny. At one point they offered to play any song of choice for a birthday girl. She said she didn’t have a favorite. They pressed a bit more, and she said “I don’t know who these people are “ . Ha!
We hung out with Daryl before and after his gig. He was very chill and interesting but our conversation was short because he was getting ready to go on and then he had to pack up.
Short while later he calls and offers free tickets to Chuck Berry at the Baltimore amphitheater. Too cool ! We had second row seats and Daryl was playing piano in Chuck’s band. I was not completely clear with how he got the gig playing in Berry’s band but it something to do with a connection when Daryl was a teenager and he could play keyboards whenever Chuck was in the Baltimore/ Washington area.
After the show Daryl came and brought us back stage. Back stage was a crew breaking down the stage and one small trailer. It was a bit uncomfortable in that Daryl wanted us to have a meet and handshake. But it quickly became clear Mr. Berry was not coming out and Daryl was not welcome inside. A bit later two autographs were passed out of the trailer.
Was a bit awkward, I felt bad at the time feeling Daryl was snubbed by the musician he based everything on. Looking back I think that even though Daryl was an adult, Chuck had some things he didn’t want Daryl to know about.
Daryl Davis was a very good guitar player, piano player and singer. He was also very intelligent, interesting and a solid guy. A good Man.
This is all a true story.
I think this deserves a subscription to my channel !

I had no clue bedazzled one piece swimsuits were ever going to be fashionable, so it's safe to say I don't have my finger on the pulse of what the kids like. This generational shift is interesting, in so far as humanity has never been stable enough to allow people in their 50's/60's to observe their entertainment trends being transmogrified in ways we're doing now- what was edgy for the purposes of annoying normal people is in a different spot now- like normal is edgy or something? And with AI, who knows where this all goes. Pop music is an interesting social phenomenon, too bad the music it's self isn't there at this point. (I work with people who turn on teenie bop radio- I know what's going on again.. gah)

A lot of it has to do with production techniques specifically. Nowadays there is much less: 1. live bands recording rhythm tracks (and often, full songs) 2. Analog keyboards generally
