Misalignment is one of my gripes too. You were better served on Monday's trip to Tirano in a Second Class local carriage (where ALL the seats had a proper window view) than in this First Class carriage.

Nice video! Just two side notes: the one you see at 6:45 is “Milano Fiorenza” Trenord depot, and it’s located just outside the city of Milan, very close to the Expo 2015 site. The actual “Fascio di San Rocco” (San Rocco's sidings) is located less than 2 kilometres from Milano Porta Garibaldi station, but on the opposite side of the train from your seat. Then, the reason why it takes much longer to travel from Milan to Lyon (18:00 marker) than from Lyon to Paris is not just that from Turin to Lyon there's no high speed line (yet, but there are several protests against it), also between Milan and Turin there’s an high speed line (capable of reaching 300 km/h), that could save up to 1 and a half hour, but TGVs are not allowed to use that line. It was planned on June to start a Frecciarossa service between Milan (Central station, not Garibaldi) and Paris (Gare de Lyon) and it would have taken 6 and a half hours running on both Italian and French high speed lines, but it didn’t start due to the pandemic. I hope I gave you some useful and/or interesting information 😊

    • @DylansTravelReports
      @DylansTravelReports  3 роки тому +2

Thanks for the info! I hear they are building a high speed line that basically goes through the alps rather then round the mountains. They did something similar in South Korea that was a great success and made journey times less than half what they used to be.

@@DylansTravelReports exactly, the TAV line would save hours of travel between Turin and Lyon, but there have been (and will probably continue after the pandemic) several protests by the NO-TAVs (TAV means Treno ad Alta Velocità, or High Speed Train)

They said the journeys to Paris/Brussels were too short. But it would still have worked better for a morning meeting than a crack-of-dawn plane. Hi Dylan, another great post from you despite the negative issues you experienced with the seat against the pillar, the poorly presented loo and the expensive catering. The scenery from Milan to Lyon is just stunning and thank you for the effort you took to get it right for us viewers. It could be typical arrogance on the part of SNCF or the Italian origins of the service, but if it was me I would be searching for the train manager in an effort to get a better seat, especially given the distance I would have travelled to experience this journey. I was fortunate to have good seats on most of my British trips and needed only one reservation (from Edinburgh to York on a Cross-Country Class 220 service - and I scored a good 1st class seat and great weather). Hoping the latest UK lockdown hasn't restricted you too much and you are able to earn a living and stay with your folks. Melbourne's population gets set free to explore beyond the regional "ring of steel" from midnight tonight and I'm looking forward to both road and rail trips this week and eating out again. Best wishes and please stay safe. From your friend downunder, Michael.

Having spent a lot on getting First Class I was very surprised that there was no complementary food or drink and what was offered from the Cafe was basic and very expensive. Found an excellent bakery near the station where I stocked up on food and drink for the return journey.
I also had to use someone else’s seat on return journey as I can not stand travelling backwards on trains. Stunning scenery going down to the South of France as well 👍👍

Seat looks superb though. I was wondering about the speed which seemed kind of slow to me but after 18:20 they really picked it up. The price was kind of steep even considering the scenery. Food service has been an issue in Canada and the U.S. and now seems to have reached Europe. Too bad but a sign of the times I guess. Great show Dylan.

Lyon to Paris is the original high-speed line in France. Initially, TGV trainsets served between Paris and Lyon only. As more trainsets became available, ideas to extend TGV services over conventional lines came up, offering direct services to more cities. This video shows perhaps the longest TGV service extension beyond its high-speed realm. From the railway company's viewpoint it's a compromise: it's nice to offer through services, but don't have the expensive TGV trainsets spend too much of their service life at conventional speed.
As more high-speed lines are built, the opportunities for offering through services beyond the high-speed network gradually shift.

Great video as always Dylan, thanks. My partner and I did that trip the other way around in June 2014 as part of a Great Rail Journeys holiday to Lake Garda (the least said about the holiday and the mediocre GRT experience the better). A pleasant journey but there was chaos at Chambery as SNCF decided, without warning, to terminate our train there and run it back to Paris. No onboard announcement and it was only by chance that my partner (who speaks French fluently) overheard a conversation and got everybody off the train before it left. Had to swap to the train on the adjacent platform. The onboard crew were as confused as we were and the poor steward who had served lunches between Paris and Chambery was desperately trying to collect the money owed to him. Not SNCF's finest hour. Those seats that don't align with windows are so annoying aren't they. I've never been that impressed with SNCF's first class. The seats are comfortable enough, but it just doesn't feel like first class. Eurostar's Standard Premier is far superior - on the London to Marseille route you get two meals (breakfast and lunch) included in the ticket price.

Fun fact : When you are at Chambéry Challes les eaux, the train from Milano across the French Alps is meeting the train from Annecy and they make the both train in one train. You should try it. If you come from Annecy, the train is stopping about 15min to meet the other train, if you want to take it in your vids 😉

I've decided of all the trains you've shown us I like the Czech train the best. It was clean, everything worked, the service people were friendly and most of all the food looked good and it wasn't overpriced. As I remember the ticket was reasonable, too.

may i reccomend a train service i am personally a big fan of? I really like the ÖBB EC 163/164, a long distance train from Graz to Zurich with the old Eurofima coaches and beautiful lanscape. When you buy in advance with Sparschiene, it can go as low as 35€ in a second class compartment coach ^^

@@DylansTravelReports I live in Germany close to the Czech Republic border. It's not unusual for the Bundespolizei in normal times to board a Dresden - Berlin bound train at Bad Schandau, (first station in Germany) walk through the train and carry out random checks if a passenger takes their interest. Same at Bad Bentheim just before the Netherlands. I've even seen German customs officers on the S Bahn between Schöna and Dresden. They're on the lookout for excess cigarettes and other assorted nasties from the CZ border town markets.

Absolutely brilliant video, I myself was fascinated by the TGV trains when I was younger and still have a love for them today. Would love to get myself a journey on one of them sometime in the future.
Shame about the so-called "window seat" though, it annoys me as well when you get a seat that doesn't properly align with the view from the Window. Train companies really need to do a better job of seat placement imho, or at the very least avoid mislabeling seats like that...
Otherwise, I hope that wasn't too much of a problem for you and it looked like you still had a great train journey at least anyway. ;)

I would like to point a comment for an interior of this train. I like the interior of Cristian Lacroix, especially in the 2nd class. He made an amazing job! In my eyes it is little shame that SNCF doesn't continue with interior like that (especially Duplex interior is little boring in my eyes). One day I would like to try TGV train with interior of Cristian Lacroix even thought those trains are old.
Anyway I am surprised that there was no green seat inside of this train.

Nice to see a bit of this route as I was booked on it in 2019 but on reaching Paris found it was closed due to a landslide at Modane. Almost zero help from SNCF. I had to rebook via Basle for nearly €300. It had a 5 minute connection but we were 2 minutes late; sprinting over the steps I just scrambled on to my connection. Nul points SBB! Why wasn't it cross-platform, as I expected for an advertised international connection? European railways are not always all they are cracked up to be. Have travelled from Lille to Lyon on a double-deck TGV; cross platform connection from Eurostar and great views "on top", but only one door per carriage! So the train dropped time simply due to delays at stations as passengers struggled to board and alight. British trains are generally more frequent and still pretty fast end-to-end, and no more expensive if you can get advance fares.

    • @DylansTravelReports

@@DylansTravelReports Luckily I was on a work trip and they paid. I don't think they bothered pursuing it. They would probably only get the original cheaper ticket refunded. For a private individual travel insurance could cover the rest. To be fair, the same thing happens on the airlines, as I discovered when fog broke my connection at San Francisco.

No it was just one walkway for both directions. If I'm honest, one-way systems are usually really poorly planned imo.
