      Defending Europe is also in the interests of the US, think about it instead of repeating the usual nonsense.
      The money for the defense of Europe is not free, there is a counterpart in terms of national sovereignty.
      And that money is certainly not used for infrastructure, transport, health, research, education.

    Re: the delay for the police. On my last trip to Switzerland, the fire alarm in my coach went off just as the train started rolling out of Basel HBF en route to Visp. Some idiot lit up a cigarette in the washroom, and set off the alarm. At the first stop, the police boarded the train and took him away. All of us in that car got vouchers for 8 francs for the inconvenience, usable on trains and at a few other locations. It all happened so quickly that we were back on schedule by the time we reached Berne.

    If you can arrange and afford it, try to grab a ride with the "Glacier Express" in Switzerland.

    • @tonywilkins6090
      @tonywilkins6090 3 роки тому +2

      From what I have seen online, it's the DfT's decisions that basically give the feeling that UK railways are about profit than passengers. TOC's don't have any input about what type of trains they get. Basically DfT makes the decision and TOC's basically have to accept it as DfT are basically paying for the trains. Obviously because of the franchise system, TOC's basically can't afford to buy new trains outright as they basically won't make the money back during the franchise period.
      Whereas Swiss railway companies basically own the trains, so they have full control over what they want, and they would easily make the money back due to lack of franchise periods.

    After I get a few other financial and domestic issues sorted, and provided my health doesn't deteriorate (I'm in my early seniors' years), Switzerland and Northern Italy are on the 'Bucket List'. Thank you for this excellent review of your journey from Geneva to Milan.The scenery is simply stunning and you have shown it well. Coupled with your many other videos of your Summer 2020 European travels, this is an excellent salve for anyone viewing your channel that is currently experiencing lockdown, especially your UK compatriots and others in the Northern Hemisphere winter. There are several gems in this video that are worth further comment, so please bear with me.
    First, thanks for your warning about the information displays at Geneva being mostly in French. I will need to revise my Year 11 (1968) learnings here, although, as an Aussie, I could probably get away with; "Pardon, je suis Australien et mon Francais n'est tres bien. J'ai besoin d'aide. Parlez vous Anglais?" Most French people with any sense of history would probably go out of their way to assist, given my nation's record in France during World War 1.
    Second, I love your appreciation of Art Deco in Geneva station and noted in other of your videos.
    Third, this appears to be one of Alstom's really stylish offerings. Don't get me started about the poor riding quality of their Xtrapolis trains here in Melbourne (although I'm sure Alstom Head Office wasn't aware of the terrible condition of some of our track when these were first designed ; track condition has improved somewhat in the last five or so years, but there are still areas where the ride is, shall we say, breathtaking at speed.).
    Fourth, I had to really laugh out loud when you revealed the snakes 'n' ladders game on the fold out table. Given a few of my experiences in the last week, it was so poignant.
    Fifth, there were several sequences within this video that caused me to pause the play and look more deeply.
    As a retired Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics Australia, I noted with extreme interest the following;
    1. The Steel Highway Train for Trucks that you passed entering Domodossola,
    2. The Milano tram and the boulevard upon which it was running in terms of the clear separation of road service lanes from the main road traffic lanes and the placement of the tramway upon the verge nature strips - we in Melbourne could do with such a road design revision for our St.Kilda Road,
    3. The major bus depot you passed just before arriving at Milan.
    At the next Victorian Committee meeting of CILTA on Wednesday next (27th), I will draw the attention of the Committee to your video channel and this video in particular for the abovementioned notes.
    While you are keeping safe and warm at home in the Inverness winter under lockdown, you might have a chuckle at my personal lockdown during a current heatwave Southeastern Australia is experiencing this weekend (just before our National Holiday). I'm indoors with the fan on and hydrating with iced water while others outside at beaches are exclaiming "Turn me over mum, I'm fried this side!" Amongst other delayed things on my to do list, I'll set aside some time to check out your friend 'Nonstop Eurotrip'. You might like to check out some of our local Aussie rail UA-camrs as well (suggest you start with Pannier P Productions);
    Cheers from Michael.

    Gli ETR.610 (classificato anche RABe 503 Astoro) sono un gruppo di elettrotreni ad assetto variabile, acquistati dalla cessata compagnia italo-svizzera Cisalpino nel 1997, e costruiti dalla Alstom Ferroviaria, utilizzando la piattaforma denominata Nuovo Pendolino. Dopo la cessione delle attività operative di Cisalpino la flotta venne equamente suddivisa fra i soci Trenitalia e FFS. L'ETR.610 è analogo all'ETR.600, impiegato per il servizio Frecciarossa, dal quale si differenzia per un diverso allestimento interno e per l'equipaggiamento che gli consente di funzionare con quattro tipi diversi di alimentazione elettrica. La parte stilistica, ergonomica e lo studio degli ambienti interni è ad opera dell'azienda di progettazione italiana Italdesign Giugiaro.

    • @superbeni7297
      @superbeni7297 3 роки тому

      The Pendolinos do actually pendel ;) Fells weird at the start, but you get used to it. The ride isn't the smoothest because the articulation system requires some hard shocks, so it depends on the track conditons. The Recline is rather tiny on SBB trains in general, but it's comfortable enough. And long haul is relative, as most lines are around 3h, but yeah for these it's comfy enough!

    Nice trip, that ETR Train is awesome. The disappointment about this trip only when your train got delayed for a while because police enter on the train for unknown reason when in Lausanne. That Rolling Highway a.k.a Train transporting Truck when entering Italy looks great despite the locomotive is hidden behind the train in between your train and the Train transporting Truck.

    The Alps are one of the world's most beautiful mountains. I now live vicariously through you Dylan. LoL I liked this train. I also liked the dining car. This area is my favorite part of the train. I'm surprised it was open inspire of the pandemic. I now know how to travel from Rome to Switzerland the next time I revisit Rome.

    Impressive scenery but the old Gotthard route (before the bas tunnel came into operation) is, in my opinion, even more awesome! Out of interest, the unit you travelled on has been a regular performer on the Zurich - Muenchen route via Bregenz and Lindau since the timetable change - not sure if that is good or bad as although the Astoro units are nice, the panorama cars were even better. I have heard that they are now testing these units in Austria so am hoping that they are not put on the Transalpin which is currently loco-hauled with panorama car.

    Thank you so much for this, Dylan! As an American traveling to Europe for the first time, this was very helpful. I am taking a train from Geneva to Milan in a couple weeks and this helped me know what to expect. I so appreciate how in-depth you went!
    Is larger luggage safe in the storage bins you showed?

    I used to use this route (but from Lausanne rather than Geneva) fairly regularly earlier this century (in older Pendolinos - I left Switzerland in the same year these new ones were introduced) (actually, I suppose that should be "Pendolini"?). You didn't mention the vineyards between Lausanne and the Rhone valley - yes, Switzerland produces (mostly white) wine! - nor the cacophony of mobile phones pinging as you leave the Simplon Tunnel and the Italian mobile phone networks welcome you to Italy!
    I haven't seen this channel before, and I was a bit disappointed that half the video was about the train rather than the passing scenery. Also, sacrilege to waste so much time showing Geneva's modern but pretty boring station, but not even mentioning the glorious architecture of Milan Centrale! The channel is evidently for train buffs rather than for people who want to see out of the window, so, although it was nice to see my old haunts, as far as subscribing goes it's "thanks, but no thanks".

    Wonderful video. I like that you wrote everything so we could enjoy the scenery as well. I will be in Milan in September and I am considering taking a day trip to Geneva and spend the night and return the next day. I want to see the Alps and spend the day in Geneva. I didn’t know they mostly spoke French there. Is it hard to navigate the streets of Geneva if you don’t speak French. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations?

      @@DylansTravelReports It was a long time ago, my Grandmother was 8 years old when this happened.
      Either 1902 or 1903.
      A strange thing is that his name is mentioned nowhere on the monuments to the lost workers.
      On the swiss side since he was working for the italian side and on the monument set up in the years after as he was not a "worker".
      The fascist regime of Mussolini was not in favour of recognising a italian engineer under contract with the italian side but working on the swiss digging face.
      One thing positive, my grandmother learned french then and became a teacher of that language.
