- Here are few techniques for handling a pistol that I am familiar with. This is just my (Zee) take on it and not necessarily “the way”. Please consider these but know that working in and around people in various close quarters (cars, houses, buildings etc) will dictate what you have to do. I suggest having many viable options that you have confidence in using.

(My favorite is the temple thing. Like when I'm wearing my kevlar and can safely tuck the barrel in against my head when I go to open a door and the knob is stuck).

Great vid. I use all of them also. Situation dictates. After fighting for years my wrists are jacked up and sul sucks for a long time. So if we are doing training and standing around, temple position is a God sent.

Sorry Z, this was supposed to be about pistols. I like the compressed and muzzle down method. For some reason my eyes line with my sights faster when I'm raising the weapon and not so much when lowering it.
Hell yeah I dig it my fine feathered friend .I will use all of those positions for when the situations call for it .

When clearing rooms with a carbine I prefer the low entry. I can align my optic with my eyes faster however if you pop through that doorway and someone is there all you will do when getting that muzzle up is hit the guy in his nads and then your barrel is stuck between his legs. With high entry you can get the muzzle down and if someone is there you can drive that muzzle straight into his chest. There are pros and cons to every method of entry. Everyone chime in and let me know what your favorite method is and why.

I like a lot of different positions, mainly as the situation dictates. I do it a lot at home, but I bought one of those toy guns that are a Beretta 92fs replica, it's very close to the same size and stuff and still makes a bang bang sound pulling the trigger, it's like $7 at the store and adds a little fun to the practice while still being sfe and practical, plus if by chance a neighbor sees me through a window or something, I just look like a big kid with an orange and green toy gun, lol.

@@AldoRaineoftheBasterds Yesterday I was sitting to close to the kitchen so I went for 4.5 mile walk. At mile 3 I was questioning the wisdom of cutting off the draw string on my deck jacket. Tomorrow is range day it will be above freezing which means I will be wet thru by 10 AM.

Sul is good, temple index is good, high carry is good. Utilize the technique that is required at the moment. Sul in a rubber boat probably bad, temple index in a helicopter probably bad...

I’ve trained at TFTT/DAG for most of my adult/professional life and so Position Sul is just my go-to. It just works for most LE environments. Not that anybody cares. But that temple thing is for Clowns. Hello, Darwin just called and wants his technique back.

When I trained with Max at TFTT/DAG he was very specific that Sul was for three circumstances (paraphrased), When you are moving to contact, but are not the cover man/do not have a clear angle on the target/enemy position, when a friendly has to pass through your sector of fire (such as making entry to a room from opposite sides of a door), and last when dominating a crowd/non-combatants so your weapon is ready but not pointed directly at them.
He said other ready positions (i.e. low ready) were used outside those three circumstances where Sul is the best.
Has there been any changes to the curriculum since I last trained with them in 2009?

The temple method not so much, although I agree it does have its place. "What the situation requires." pretty well sums up how I too look at the various carry methods. So im about 14 and i got a toy gun and i thought hey my dad was in S.W.A.T. let me ask how to tactically and safely use a pistol so he told me how to do some of these tactics and i can say that this is quite good and no scam at all!
One thing I like about the high carry with a pistol and especially a rifle, is if you trip and eat shit you are less likely to drive your barrel into the ground. And let’s face it in the dark and not on a flat range we have all ate shit a time or two.

On the off chance you see this, have you thought about making a training DVD (pistol, carbine, etc.)? You have a very easy-to-understand and unintimidating style that I think would go over very well in today's market.

For those of you without SIRT guns (I don't blame you, they're a lot of lettuce) or airsoft or sims - and you want to try these, take your slide off and give it a whirl.
Or just unload your gun and do it. If you can't trust yourself to properly unload a firearm and check if it's clear, you probably shouldn't be doing any kind of training exercises whatsoever.

My big thing -- especially as a much older guy -- is that it's paramount to avoid wrestling over my gun (and yeah, the first thing I thought regarding your "close in" hold, is that it could just be squashed against me). If I have to be in a situation where someone could end up right on top of me from extremely close quarters, I want to have my WEAK SIDE facing where they would come from, with my gun out somewhat extended into previously "safe" territory. That way, if necessary, an attacker can "wrestle" with my weak side for a fraction of a second while I can come up underneath with my gun and end the threat.
Unless he comes at you from your strong side, where you now have the weapon in a compromised position. Train for multiple scenarios with multiple different techniques. Don't rely on just your "favorite way", because it might fail you when you need it most. Thanks for watching, TR.
@@TacticalRifleman Well, the idea is that I've COME from a safe (and visible) area, and I can trust that to be a safe place for my gun. Again, for me as an older guy (weaker, slower), it's PARAMOUNT that I avoid a struggle for the gun.

I've seen some videos of people using the temple index when training to shoot and move on the inside of a vehicle. That seems like a decent use for that maybe? I don't know shit though, just throwing that out there.
Yeah, that temple stuff is GAF. I’m a Sul guy from years of using it but I can appreciate the high ready.
Have you ever used the CAR System (Center Axis Relock)? It works very good in tight spaces (CQB).
I did the CAR training 20 years ago; I didn't think anyone else knew about that!

@@zdurham1 No, CAR is not just the SUL position.; CAR is a fighting system invented by the late LEO Paul Castle that primarily allows for acceptable combat accuracy with the maximum amount of close-quarters firearm retention. If you've seen the John Wick movies, Keanu Reeves uses CAR many times throughout the movies: It's that peculiar way he holds his gun that to the uninitiated looks like a modified "gangsta" grip. The gist of the system is that the shooter stands bladed to the target and holds the gun canted at about a thirty degree angle with the front sight held out at the shooter's natural reading distance (this works with the body biomechanically and allows for a stronger grip.) The forearms are perpendicular to each other (the forearms "scissor," creating a 90 degree angle,) and the thumbs are pointing upward, tips touching. Isometric pressure is applied at all times, the support arm pulling toward the body and the dominant arm pushing out.
There are three positions in CAR: The combat position (SUL,) high position, and extended position. In the combat (SUL) position, the gun can be rotated up and held in-line with the body, pointing toward the target, to allow for point firing and retention within very close ranges. The high position is what I described above. The extended position is similar to Isosceles, but with the body still kept bladed and the front sight pushed out to where the rear sight was held in the high position.
The purpose of CAR is to allow quick target acquisition and engagement in close quarters with combat-acceptable accuracy, a high degree of recoil control, and maximum retention. I think it's more popular and widespread in the LEO world than the military or special forces milieus.

Very good vid. I practice my position with my weapon totally unloaded, with an empty magazine and an extra empty mag on my belt, because I also practice an empty mag switch.
Training tip: purchase a training round such as a snap cap, A-Zoom, orange safety round etc.. and have the spare mag loaded with one. You can effectively build in the memory of making the firearm “ready to fire” and it will enhance your training. A++ for taking the proactive approach to improve your skills!
@@briangullickson9013 Thanks Brian. I forgot to mention on my comment. What I did is saved some of the brass after shooting at the range. I brought the shot bass home and pushed a lead bullet on each of the shot brass.
I added a bit of black silicone to the prime hole. They work well and simulate the hot bullet in just about every way. I marked them with a marker and put them in a marked bag.

Asp has a video of a robber doing the temple version to hide the gun under his hood. Great idea looked like a cell phone but couldn't see the good citizen draw and of course story didn't have a happy ending for the robber

I hadn't heard of the side of head position. I suppose you might be able to locate the grip so it's not blocking your peripheral view.
I've been working with the high forward position like you demonstrated but I try to keep the front sight in my peripheral vision between my eye and where I'm looking. My thought is to keep the slide from blocking distant vision and being able to get the gun onto a threat.

awesome video - I always kept my pistol fully gripped but tight to my chest when clearing a house - it’s just how we were trained - you won’t flag and can point shoot at really close quarters if you had too. There are so many ways but the smartest thing this guy said and why I think he is an EXCELLENT instructor is that you never marry one specific tactic, grip, or stance it’s always what the situation dictates. It’s like unused to tell my conceal students on holsters - they all have their uses and purposes depending on what you’re doing and where you are.

I know this is directed more at moving in and around stuff in close quarters but what position would you use if you had to run say between cover toward a target 100 meters or so, assuming you don’t reholster?
Elliot Smiles yeah not quite what I meant, not even I’m dumb enough to run that far with no cover and people shooting directly at me. I meant more so running with a pistol in general. I just mentioned target/threat so they knew I was asking in context of needing to be ready to shoot. Thanks anyway
A good question because a hand gun is what we, in some states, can legally have with us. If you were in a Mall, you may have to assault to the nearest exit.
A one hand high carry is what I would use. I would try to limit the pumping of my weapon arm so that I kept muzzle control.
Kinda like a rifle.
I control it with one hand and pump with my support (free) arm.

Temple pin loses your peripheral. The other two are fine as are some others depending on your physical position the situation
I'm thinking the same way too, I think it's unadvisable specially if the combat terrain is a wide area open field
I carry a stock Glock for work (either the 21 or 31) but generally speaking what I prefer is simplicity and ambidexterity. Stuff like no external safety and European style mag release.
Why? Simpler is better for a high stress scenario, also the likeliest place you're gonna get shot in a gunfight is the hands and wrists. May be different for military like most of T1G come from... But for CCWs, police, and security MOST PEOPLE aren't acclimated to violence and most encounters take place within conversational distance. This combination means that a lot of people wind up focusing on the weapon and shooting for that. (This is why victims can sometimes make the worst witnesses, they're so zoomed in on the gun they can't really describe their attacker. Also a big reason why FBI requires minimum 12" penetration in ballistics gel, since bullets often have to go through hands and wrists before entering cardiac box.)
Obviously, fights are extremely context specific and what works for me ain't necessarily gonna work for you. These are just some considerations I take into consideration for duty or defense oriented handguns, and why I focus on strong hand only + support hand only shooting as much as proper 2 handed shooting. Man, I've NEVER heard of this "Temple" hold and Never seen it either....Like you said your Peripheral Vision is Gonna Bye Bye Quick. I've been retired for several years now and I'm gonna go by the City Office tomorrow and see if our officers are using this(I'm Curious) To me this is a Death Sentence and Quick Too. Just my 2 cents.

While they might not be using it - that doesn't mean those officers are getting the most recent training tactics. Temple index is something that if you showed someone 10-15 years ago, they'd say you're out of your mind. It makes perfect sense CONTEXTUALLY. As always, situation dictates. Most common situation for temple index would be in a vehicle. I'm a big compressed ready guy otherwise.

i am right handed but left eye dominant i shoot handguns right handed using my left eye for sighting, and long guns left shoulder left eye

I'm not a fan of temple indexing. I feel like you lose alot of your vision. I do like it for entering and exiting vehicles, but that's about it. The other two are situational. If I'm in a group I like low carry to keep from flagging the back of one of my buddies heads 🤷♂️ but that's just a personal preference.

How about center axis relock?
Mike Anthony If you talking about center of the chest, pointed forward, with the grip broken, I dont have much experience with it. I’m also not a fan of giving every little variation a name. Once someone is truly competent with the pistol, high and low with slight modifications are all that is really needed IMO.
When teaching someone, there is some necessity to describe every variation but there seems to be too much emphasis.
If peaking corners with the gun pointing forward, bend your elbows a bit to negate flagging past thresholds.👊

I was wondering when someone in the comments would mention CAR. I'm not an expert, just an enthusiast, but heres the skinny on it:
Low-ready with Center Axis Relock is actually very fast, doesn't require you to break your grip, and allows easy sight acquisition. If you're familiar with the combat/high position in CAR, low ready is accomplished by simply moving the support arm down a short distance. To reacquire your sights and point to target, all you have to do is move your support arm back up and you are ready to engage. It's easy to consistently get a proper sight picture doing this.
CAR, as far as I'm aware, also implements the Sul position covered in this video. The benefit of Sul is retention, as Zee explained, and it is mostly useful when the threat is not entirely imminent, or in VERY close quarters using the CAR system. CAR adds an extra dimension to Sul: The shooter stands bladed in the Sul position, and when a threat appears within 3 - 5 yards, the pistol can be rotated 90 degrees so that it is facing the threat while still locked into the core of the shooter's body and fired, allowing both retention and offensive capability. It is essentially a point firing technique for use within touching distance, when there is a possibility an attacker might try to grapple or take your firearm. However, in most cases, the combat/high position is used.
Note that the "high position" in CAR is not the same as the high position demonstrated in the video. The high position in CAR requires that the shooter hold the gun canted at about a 30 degree angle, the forearms coming together at a 90 degree angle, with the shooter standing bladed to the target, tips of the thumps touching, and isometric pressure applied in the grip at all times similar to the push/pull technique in Weaver (there are a lot of similarities between CAR and Weaver, primarily isometric pressure and blading the body. Think of CAR like an evolution of Weaver optimized for CQB.)
The advantage of CAR is primarily retention, profile minimization around cover, effectiveness while point shooting, and recoil control. When peeking around cover, by far I would always use CAR because it brings the gun off-center from my body, and allows me to only expose just the amount of body necessary to see and shoot around a corner, similar to various rifle techniques. CAR is easier to use inside of vehicles as well, since most shooting out of vehicles is done out of the passenger windows, and using CAR I can simply blade my body and shoot without readjusting my seating position. Also, one small extra advantage is that CAR allows cross-eye dominant shooters to shoot comfortably with both eyes because the body is bladed and the other eye can't physically see the sights, thus eliminating perceived dual sight pictures/dual targets.
CAR does have disadvantages. Isosceles is a much more stable shooting platform, and because it relies less upon constant isometric pressure to achieve high levels of recoil control, it is generally more consistently useful for engaging targets at longer ranges (the extended/apogee position in CAR is intended to achieve full extension and mirror the results of Isosceles, but I've had mixed results.) If you wear a plate carrier, Isosceles is also more tactically advantageous because it presents the front of your body to the enemy, thus allowing maximum plate coverage. I have heard some shooters claim that movement while firing is easier using Isosceles vis-a-vis CAR.
Ultimately, your groups with CAR are most likely going to be slightly worse than with Isosceles. CAR is a system optimized not for bullseye precision, but instead for a very specific kind of close-quarters fighting emblematic of police and SWAT operations. It's no coincidence that its inventor, Paul Castle (RIP,) was a law enforcement officer himself, and many of his students were law enforcement. If you're going to be clearing your house or fighting in very close proximity to bad guys, there's really no contest: CAR is fantastic; however, it fills a very specific role and should not be substituted for the conventional Isosceles system save for very idiosyncratic situations such as mine (I'm cross-eye dominant and it's very easy for me to shoot with both eyes open using CAR, but not Isosceles.)

Thanks Instructor Z! These positions are important to consider especially if you are a CCW carrier and if you have to be engaged in an active shooter situation. Ken Hackathorn also covered the low position vs the "temple position" with regard with a crowded environment. Instructor Z's coverage of the subject mirrors this well - but I also really appreciate Instructor Z's comments of use of techniques may be dictated by the situation - so learn the advantages and disadvantages to each.

One of the good things of keeping your gun facing down as you're patrolling through the house or anywhere else if somebody jumps at you you won't have time to raise your gun or even lower your gun if you have it facing up. If it's facing down at least you can shoot him in the leg as you're trying to get Space to pull it back up. A gun facing up is easier to remove from the shooter rather than facing down. Simple physics.
