  • Manual time lapse created with about 100 individual exposures. As I was photographing this storm, it was hammering eastern Ulster, including Kingston with near 70 mph wind gusts and quarter sized hail, causing considerable damage to the city's utilities and downing trees across the area.
    Synopsis....
On Wednesday, July 13, a rather benign looking setup was over NY state. The SPC predicted just a general thunderstorm risk with a very low chance of severe weather. There was some moderate instability over the region, but surface and upper-level forcing were rather weak. However, a lone storm was able to develop near Binghamton NY around 4pm, and some of the convective allowing models were hinting it could intensify so I decided to drive north near Rhinebeck and wait for it to approach for about 2 hours. Initially a rather weak storm, the cell exploded into a mature supercell as it came off the Catskills into the Mid-Hudson Valley. Despite the low severe risk, this single cell was able to take full advantage of the local kinematic environment. It likely tapped into greater instability that had been building within the valley all day. Additionally, it's likely the low-level flow was funneling up the valley from the south or even SSE. This, combined with decent mid-level winds of about 40 knots out of the NW, helped to create veering with height that allowed the updraft to develop persistent mid-level rotation, and thus a mesocyclone. Complete with an RFD cut and wall cloud and this storm displayed stunning structure usually seen in the Great Plains!

We had three trees fall in the backyard. It was wild.

Thankyou! This was definitely a surprise. Despite the low severe risk, something about this storm made me want to give it a try. It initially formed near Binghamton and had some supercell characteristics on radar, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I couldn't have imagined it'd evolve into such a spectacular storm.

crazy I live in orange county but i was on vacation in Delaware during this stunning structure though . also will you have a video up for 7/24/22 when a unexpected line of storms nailed south ny and pa in a MRGL risk even down here where i was, not even in the worst of it we got 45-50 mph outflow winds!

I posititioned myself in Hyde Park for the line on the evening of July 24th. The storms died out but they sent out an impressive outflow boundary, probably enhanced by the deep mixed layer that day. High winds resulted with little in the way of rain. I got a time lapse of the shelf and wind footage, but without the rain it looks less intense. I may upload it but I'm not sure if it's UA-cam worthy. I do still have plenty of other footage to upload though.
