"I think he did better than most people at the doctor"
Yeah, whenever I go to the doctor, as soon as they let me out of my carrier, I run around the room in a panic, hide under the table and stand on the counter with my back arched to look bigger.
I'm not allowed to bite anyone anymore though. If I do it again, I might go to jail =(

Try hissing. Might keep them away so you don't have to bite them.
Or, if you sit in the corner with your back to the doctor and ignore them. That'll help too.

I’m a senior in high school and taking a pre-vet course at a local college. We’ve had three speakers so far come in and BEG us to go into the veterinary field because every clinic in understaffed.
I also had to schedule an appointment for my bunny today that has two giant bald spots - and my vet (the only exotic vet in Indianapolis) said “sorry we’re booked until January” so I have to go somewhere an hour away just to have her checked out :/

In nursing school i learned to never dip cotton or cloth into the fluid or hold it against the opening of the bottle. The cotton is not sterile and will make the whole bottle non sterile aswell! Its better to pour it over the cotton or cloth. This may make a mess but it prevents contamination! I don't know if it is as important when working with reptiles but I thought you guys might like this little fact!

I work as a licensed vet tech in an animal hospital, I cannot express how great full I am for what you said about making appointments at the vet. COVID hit the veterinary community particularly hard, nationwide, as you said. The pet population has doubled and we have fewer staff than ever with one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. We are so swamped that on my days off, I often spend most of the day asleep from exhaustion. Thank you so much for briefly bringing that up and explaining why non life threatening emergencies can wait. Clients often get mad when they are in the waiting room for long periods of time, and a new client runs in with an emergency and gets rushed straight to the back, and the owners placed in a room. They often fail to understand why that pet was seen so quickly when the reality is, you don’t want to be in a situation where you’re pet is the one being rushed to the back. The biggest thing I can say when taking your pets to the hospital regardless of the reason, just be nice! More times than not, the staff is overworked, under paid, and beyond exhausted. A small act of kindness goes a long way! Thank you Emily!!!

I imagine it's like going to the er where maybe I've been waiting 2 hours because of a stomach ache but someone in an ambulance gets rushed back. It sucks for me bc I'm hurting but I don't want to be that person who was rushed back because of a fatal wreck or heart attack or something else.

My mom is a vet, and has told me how not only are they busy because people are adopting more pets, they are home with their pets more and notice the littlest normal things. My childhood cat had to be put down for mouth cancer, too. He was 3 months younger than me, born in our home as part of an unplanned litter, and was my oldest friend both in life stage and chronological duration of friendship. When they found the cancer, it had taken over half his jaw, and they told me that if they removed it, he would likely refuse to eat and starve to death. At least he had a good long life - he was 21, which is *ancient* for a cat.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REMINDING PEOPLE TO BE UNDERSTANDING AT THE VET!!! I spent my summer interning at a vet clinic and I can't even begin to count the number of furious clients who would call and scream at our poor office staff when we couldn't fit them into the schedule. Vets have been working overtime around the clock to deal with the millions of new pets (and millions more that developed problems over covid that owners just didn't feel the need to address earlier).
Also, please remember that vets and clinics only treat CERTAIN species. We get a frankly sad number of exotic animals (birds, lizards, snakes, etc) left on our doorstep in terrible conditions, but there's not much that we can do besides call animal control as none of the vets at the clinic have touched one of those since school.

Wonderful! There is so much for exotic vets to learn! Seems very smart of you to look to youtube for expertise. And there is indeed a whole lot of experts out there who are dying to share their knowledge with exotic vets. : ) Other wonderful medical/ husbandry reptile channels are NERD and Animal1Guy. The best channel for guinea pigs is LA Guinea Pig Rescue. Scotty's Animals has a related guinea pig care guide which is extensive. For birds, it's BirdTricks all the way. Best of luck in your studies!!

@@Neitherworld64 crested gecko they eat pangea/repashy dont need a huge massive enclosure and like room temperature to mildly humid they need a ubv light lots of places to hide make sure to have a humid hide like a log they can lay in no heat pads and some like bugs while some dont and will only eat the repashy they need to be misted every day once a day provide a water source like a small bowl as they like standing water. And this is the easier reptile there alot of work if u plan on getting one lots and lots of research dont just impulse buy one

I know snakes can get mouth rot too, so this video was especially helpful.

When I got my new female crested gecko I noticed she had redness/inflammation on her lower gumline, but no discoloration or anything of the sort. Took her to the vet and the doctor said it didn't look like mouth rot but she still got antibiotic drops that I applied twice every day. It was strange as there was little to no sign of it until I looked in her mouth to check calcium sacs, but I'm so glad she's better now
