I go in the kennel with my two shelter dogs, and both go a bit crazy but one WAY more than the other. And I too often find myself playing with them rather than just standing at the door, back turned, waiting for calm before interacting. It's hard. Really hard. Like teaching the big Tosa Inu not to jump up when he jumps up literally for a hug of his giant head. I encourage them because it's adorable and I can't resist their charms. 🤣
Happy Hounds continues to put together amazing videos like this one. Will you ever do a video on how to train your dog to do a down or wait in motion while doing the send away?
I'll need to look into both, but thank you so much for adding more resources to the list! ♥ More options = more likely people will find something that works for their pup 🙂
Hi! For this one in particular I don't add a verbal cue. I want it to become the dogs default behaviour 🙂 I also teach dogs cued down/stay or place, so there is a cued option available if I need the dog to settle at that moment! For relaxing to become their default though, they need to be reinforced when THEY choose to do it. Try to think of it like the difference between a cued sit (helpful) and an un-cued auto-sit when greeting someone (VERY helpful). My preference whenever possible is to reinforce the behaviours I want so that the dog CHOOSES those as their default rather than me needing to tell them what to do 😂
@@ssklios You're very welcome! I want to add one more piece of advice that I should have mentioned in the video. At first, when you mark & reward your dog they will try following you for more treats and stop doing what they were initially rewarded for. This is very normal! Try not to reinforce them for following/trying for more treats. Instead, wait for them to return to the rewarded behaviour, then mark & reward again. Within a few sessions you should see that lightbulb go on, and they'll quickly re-offer that behaviour or they'll stay in the original one after reinforcement 🙂
We have an almost 5 month old cockapoo. He rarely settles during the day and if I reward him when he does, he immediately becomes alert and demanding again. How do I reward the settled behaviour without reactivating him? (I really need that break.) He has two good walks, play time, sleep in his crate time, chewing time with frozen kongs and long lasting chews, and a training session every day. We may be walking him too much, but reducing that hasn't helped him settle either and just increases the biting. We did try a pen for him with bed and toys and treats in the same room so he could see us, but he got very distressed to the point of weeing or pooing within a minute of going in there, so we abandoned it. Not sure what we are doing wrong, but he is exhausting.
Hi! First- it’s 100% normal when you first start training settling for it to actually appear to “backfire”. As soon as a pup gets a reward, they’re up and wanting another. However if you ignore that again until they re-settle, then mark & reward you’ll notice they start settling faster and faster. It’s a week or so of annoying training for a lifetime of a more chill dog 😊 If the dog never gets rewarded for settling, they’ll offer that less and less as time goes on. The other thing I’d consider in your case is whether your puppy is getting enough sleep! (I’d try to keep a rough record for a couple days and see if he’s getting close to 18 hours a day). Pups need a lot of sleep, and counterintuitively lack of sleep can amp them up more (and more them more bitey).
@@happyhoundsdogtraining That is reassuring, thank you. And I agree re the sleep. Just today I made some changes to his routine to try to improve how long he sleeps, and as I write this he is still asleep after 2 hours, which is a big improvement😊.
I unknowingly did this and my now 8mo Vizsla never relaxes in the house unless he’s sleeping in his crate. I do mat work with him but once the session is over, he’s up and running again.
It's SUCH a common mistake, and it makes total sense. Puppies are absolutely exhausting 😂 then when we do train "settle" it's often in a cued, structured sense like mat work or place (still valuable skills in a different way!). Pup never chooses calmness for themselves or gets a reward for it! It's definitely not too late to capture this & build the skill with your pup though ♥
In emergency situations like that, definitely still redirect your dog away! However with young puppies, for management I do like to keep them either leashed to me or confined somewhere safe during moments I can't focus on them/training 😊

I could do that!
Dr. Overalls Relaxation Protocol and Kathy Sdao Smart 50 really helped us out.
I'll need to look into both, but thank you so much for adding more resources to the list! ♥ More options = more likely people will find something that works for their pup 🙂
Would a next step be to put this on a verbal command? If so, how would we go about adding that? Thank you!

But what can I do if the dog chews on something to get my attention. I can't ignore that, otherwise he would destroy the carpet for example.
