I had an old 48 Panhead I was working on back in the winter of 90. It was finished the first day of Daytona 91. I rode that bike 1000 miles break in time speed. I backed my bike into the line of bikes, got off the bike, checked the fuel shut off, and went inside to get 2 beers each for me and the guy that rode with me. I come out of the bar, I see his bike but mine is missing. I ran to the edge of the alley only to see two guys giving me the finger out the back of a van pulling away...that was my last ride till I built a Heritage Softail Classic. 98. If you struggling to get your wheels rolling, I've been there, hang on to the dream. You can build a bike on a budget. I did and my Dad always said I had S**t for brains...so if can do it then it must be do-able. Keep the Rubber side down...
Dam. Sorry to hear that. Wish it happened in Texas. You would have you're bike back same day.
Damn, man. That sucks. Glad you were able to build another ride.
Saddletramp Home of the Lost Sportsters! Ride Safe Ride Often!
Riding a loved ones bike is a rare feeling. Particularly if they are no longer with us. Sorry to hear about your friends passing.
That is an amazing story. Made me emotional hearing about your friend and then she gives you the motorcycle...that's one to keep forever man.
Side note. Irons and shovels are everyday blue collar worker class commuters. Love the show. Thank you 🙏
when I was a Yamaha dealer motorcycle mechanic. A customer brought in a motorcycle that was given to him, a Yamaha RD 200..Two cylinder electric start 2stroke streetbike..
it had been sitting outside for about three years in his neighbors yard. He dropped it off and said “whatever it needs “..
tires, tubes, chain, battery, air cleaner, fork tubes, seals, wipers, seat cover, cylinders bored, pistons, rings, gaskets, grips, it could’ve used new wheels because they were very rusty especially the spokes, I had to clean the inside of the gas tank from rust and seal it, new fuel lines, new clutch and throttle cable. complete go over the machine, rebuild the carburetors, tuneup..
This was in the late 1970s when Yamaha was phasing out 2 Stroke St. bikes..
The bill for all these parts and work was almost $1300..
at that time, one of the motorcycle magazines had a Yamaha ad right on the back cover. I think it was cycle or cycle world magazine. This customer could’ve bought a leftover brand new Yamaha RD200 for $595..
I pointed this magazine article out to the shop owner, I said to him, I hope the customer does not see this ad running nationwide on the back of his magazine..
his response to me was “the more it hurts, the more they like it”
just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s a good deal..
Happy Easter Y'all
For He has Risen
Amen
That story reminded me of the way I got my FLSTN. I'll never forget the phone call. It's an honor to be the steward of someone's scoot. It's like keeping a little bit of them alive. That's the way I look at it anyway. ✌😎
Good way of putting it.
Your friend would be proud of what you did with the bike. This is one of the reasons why i love old motorcycle community. Every machine has its story and this is a strong one. Keep her runnin, he would do the same.
Right on!
Had a '65 900 XLCH, right hand shift, I have big feet (14's) so angled up my shifter-lever to back kick it from my hiway pegs. Got used to it though, had a Triumph too with right hand shift. Had the Sporty for over 30 years, Electra Glide Classic now, good story about the bike and friend, being 70 myself I see friends thinning out. Got to keep the memories alive.
I’m sorry for your loss brother. My 76 is inherently acquired through my Native American mother. May they rest in peace. Teach them the things they taught you. Miigwech!
Wow. What a Beautiful bike. Sad owner died but at least you love her. Ride safe.
God bless you for making great memory of your friend, I love to have a friend like you!
Cool bike. Enjoyed hearing the story about the bike. Thanks for posting.
That’s an Awesome story, I am so sorry you lost your friend, but a piece of him sets in your shop for you to enjoy the way he would enjoy the bike. Bless your friends wife for thinking of you when she decided to part with the iron head sporty. Me, My wife and our 8 year old son Levi really enjoy your videos.
Ride safe my friend and God bless you and the Missus.
Thank you, Ron. Thanks so much.
That’s awesome how you brought it back to life in memory of your friend
I survived stage 4 , had to sell the Honda PC . Better now 7 yrs later , got the 99 sporty 1200xls to celebrate living ! Love your channel , keep on wrenching !
Glad you're still with us.
I’m glad you finally made this video. I know how special Yukon was and how much his friendship meant to you. He would be so pleased to see what this bike has become.
Cool story man.
Great Story. Keep Em Alive..
I'll try
Nothing like a old Sportster. Great color and graphics as well.
Hey thanks!
sorry you lost you friend . i appreciate you keeping it much like it was as he had it. your carb is still being worked on. one of the two was no good .the other was good but it's getting new gasket set and it's cleaned already. i got busy quik with an avalanche of repairs on family automobiles. im the only mech in the family .full time job.
Hey, man. Thanks
Man my first Harley was a 1982 Ironhead Roadster 1000cc and what a great bike it was. I took a bus down south to pick it up and rode it 230 miles back which took about 5 hours at night in the dark in the middle of winter. She got me back with zero problems, ecept I wished it had 5 gears instead of 4. But still an awesome machine.
They're a lot of fun.
Happy Easter everyone...
Hope you have a blessed Easter 🐣 🙏
I like this video for a few reasons: my ironhead was given to me by my dear aunt, my uncle passed away several years ago, but proud to ride one he kept on the road for decades. Secondly, my good friend and business partner is slowly putting together his 76 XLCH bobber that hasn't run in about a decade. Can't wait to see that one get finished. Thanks for the video, enjoyed it
Sure thing, man. Thanks for taking the time and stopping in.
Prayers your friend's wife is doing well in life. And blessings to you for keeping old iron alive!
What a great story Corey, sorry to hear about your friend, he looked like a cool dude. Nice of his wife to end up giving you the bike, i'm sure she knew it would be in good hands. Happy Easter to you and Kim..
Great story Corey. Sorry for the loss of your friend but glad you have the keepsake to remember him by.
Hey, Mark. Thank you so much.
Great story!
My best friend died oh, 23 yrs ago and his widow gave his 74 XLH to my nephew - in boxes!
Well he jumped in and built his first Harley, first chopper, from those boxes! And, rode the pis out of it: very dependable - as long as you are a wrench.
BTW those ARE the first Shovelhead Harley made. . 57 - 85, but of course w/Iron heads, not aluminum.
Couldnt believe Billy Lane not even mentioning Sportsters when he made a video of "all" the Harley Engines. .
Keep on doing U.
Not many people even with his story, would have taken the bike, an not sold it as parts, an I believe that the energy was being worked so you would have it,👍 on the storyline.
Man that 76 turned out sharp.
wow, that bike sounds clean and fast! Defently a keeper with all that story behind it. Cheers from France mate
Awesome story & Bike man. your buddy RIP I am sure has a smile on his face.👍👍
another great video Corey , i love them old bikes as well as the stories that come with them 👍
Nice bike, Cory. A Iron Sportster 1200 is what I've been riding around lately and also, just watched an interview of a man who's been around the world 4 times and one of them was on a HD Iron Sportster 1200 !! Said because they were so dependable.
A very good bike.
Always cool to see you take a machine that needs some love, and you bring it back to life. All the best. Ride Safe
Sweet ol bike good story
Amazing, much respect for you. Good people have good things happen. You are certainly a good person. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Ray
Great story of the ironhead bike! probably one of the best sounding harley's engine of all time.
Happy Easter 76 sounds good wish I had my 73 I put over 200,000 miles on it when I traded in for 86 fxstc it was another bike I wish I had back now I am on a 2001fxstd it's ok but I hit 70 this month and I have to admit it's getting a little heavy for me well be good to your self and moma catch you later
Happy Easter to you and yours
Thanks! You too!
I like that bike. Sounds great on my end.
dude that happened to me just this past summer, my best friend had brain cancer, before he told me and a few people. when i check out I want Rex to have my car
( 69 Camaro ) its all built , couple years later his Harley needs a motor, so he brings it to my shop so we both can work on it , 3 years after that he get sicker & passes away
I bought the bike for dirt cheap ( because it still needed a motor) I rebuild the motor, Then my son in Law wanted the bike ( his first & a new ridder). The Kids paid everything I had in the bike & it stays in the Family, after all that the widow granted My friend wishes & gave me the car, there was no will or any paperwork stating the fact that he wanted me to have the Camaro. And it also will stay in the Family forever ,( because I plan to live to be a 110 years old ) I'm only 52 now !!
That’s amazing ride Tramp! Man I miss my 73 Ironhead
Hey Ya know them Sportster are a blast to ride, I have a 1989 HD Sporty and it is so much fun to ride on those get around town and back to home base great on gas and of course easy to handle in those tight places. My sportster gets anywhere from 48 to 54 miles to the gallon, depending on how I ride it, when I first got the bike it had the Screaming Eagle Ignition, which was good, but kept having a low RPM miss at times. I went with a brand new Ultima Ignition, and I also ordered all the Accessories, so I can program the ignition with my Lap Top Computer, I did countless hours of research and found that HD Sportster's have a wide range of degree of timing coupled with the rear cylinder that also run a little bit hotter, so with this in mind and with the computer I can change the timing of the rear cylinder by a few degrees that not only lets it run cooler, but it'll also get better fuel mileages too.
Yesterday 04/24/23, I got the Sportster a new battery, it had not been started since Last summer, gas was drained at that time, Tank was removed, and sat like that until yesterday. After all was reinstalled fresh gas, I hit the starter button, it fire-up super fast.
Thanks for the Great Video, see Ya out there some day.
That was a nice story Corey. Divine intervention one might even say. Iron sounds great, looks slicker than snot on a doorknob. FWIW, eBay has an OEM 72-81 XL front master cylinder w/ lever for $40.
Hey bud you got a beautiful heart and you talk from your heart and that's why I love this channel plus all the bikes you got are pretty cool so God bless you my friend and keep you well.
Thank, man!
Corey, thanks for this story. I think that bike ended up in the right hands after your friends passing. I noticed your is a bit more grayer compared to it's color when you took over this bike. Not going to mention the color of my hair or lack there of! I always feel better after your final signoff. Thanks for Sharing!
Yeah I noticed that too while making this video. Lol.
Nice bike. 😎👍
I’m going to send you a sticker so I can be on that door.
Right on!
Awesome video, Saddle Tramp! Love them Ironhead Sportsters!
Happy Easter, y'all!
Thanks, my friend! You too!

Thank you, Robin.
Nice story, sorry about your friend.
As long as you are getting to ride the sportswear life is good. Take care and enjoy yourself.
Great story Tramp.

Hey Corey, Sounds good.
Cool story, see ya soon!

Thats a nice sounding sporty. Love that sound.
You and me both!
It is a beautiful bike!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks, man!
Looks fun Happy Easter
i used to know a lot of people that road those iron heads, but now i don't think i know anyone who does besides you. i see them for sale every now and then but the prices are ridiculous. i'd get one if i could find one for a fair price. good to see you out enjoying yours. anyway, keep lookin' up brother.
bill
I find it funny that 20 years ago you couldn't give those things away. But now the tables have turned.
Awesome
Great story. I have an affinity for rarely loved bikes myself. I have worked on a few of those AMF iron head Sportsters, they can be quite a challenge. That looks and sounds real nice! Cool bike. I just finished tuning my 1971 CB350 twin hotrod and got my 85 Kawi 750 turbo running again. That bike looks pretty nice!
Love that blue color! Looks like a fun ride
It is indeed!
Awesome info
Glad it was helpful!
Very cool
Thanks!
You bet!
Thank you, Mike!
Love the channel. Will have my 03 ultra classic on the road an a week. Complete frame off restoration. Harley Racing orange and black 2 tone.
Heck yeah, man!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I seen that heel shift
Great story. I had a ironhead and it was a mofo to start.
They can be a booger sometimes.
😎👍😎
Corey, Could you show the stickers on your roll up door some time? I know I have sent you a few but can't tell if they have made it to the door. Also I would like to see who else you might have on there.
Hey, there are about a dozen stickers that aren’t on the door yet (and yours is included in that stack). I’ll be putting them up soon! And happy Resurrection Day!
@@themissuscostelli497 👍Happy Resurrection Day to you also🙏
@@xanbiker You too! And what she said.
Things happen for a reason...as sad as they may be. Keep the old girl going...half the trick is to use it.
Point's and condensers is using capacitors to fire the ignition if I have this correct. Would a larger capacity capacitor give you a bigger spark and a cleaner burn on the spark plugs?
No clue. Never heard of that.
Happy Easter!
Are those narrow rabbit ears?
How do you like them?
Been thinking about putting some on my XLH
I fabbed these together a few years ago.
I love hardtails.
I wish you and your wife were my neighbors. My 1967 Iron Head needs to be finished being assembled. My motor is complete and assembled and BRAND SPANKING NEW...TOP TO BOTTOM NEVER BEEN STARTED. NEVER HAS HAD OIL OR GAS ⛽️ BRAND SPANKING NEW...And bolted down in her frame. She will be on my BRAND Spanking new Harbor Fraight motorcycle lift and will be mounted on it for me to finish. I can't wait to kick start my Vibrator..
Whoop whoop
Awesome, Angie!
Did I see a cardboard box with Yamaha written across it sitting on a trailer.Any old Virago parts in it 😁
Nah. Just some iron and softail stuff.
Have you ever had issues with the trans in it? When I was a kid I had one and there were ALWAYS issues with the pawl carrier. Other than that those engines ran really good. Mine was a '73.
I had 2nd gear slip every once and a while. It's been fixed though.
@@SaddleTrampTV yeah I remember tearing it apart on the road A LOT when I was a teenager.
Weren't the '76 models "Liberty Editions"? They had the Bicentennial logos, right?
Yes. They were. Not all of them had the same paint scheme.
What frame did you use here? I have a '74 Ironhead I'm looking to rebuild and I really like the looks of yours. Also, we're you able to bolt up the motor straight into it? I'm no welder....
The frame I found on ebay advertised as a possible paugcho, but there were no numbers on it. Probably homade, but I doubt it. Yes, the engine bolted right in. Just had to use shorter bolts.
@@SaddleTrampTV thank you for your response. I appreciate and enjoy your content. Ride safe!
What kinda fuel you running as Shovel and Iron head 76 were all made for leaded gas? Mine hate Ethanol and I still have original valves and seats.
93. I just make sure there's no fuel left in the carb when I shut them down.
@@SaddleTrampTV Yes, that's a must if running Ethanol. But even non-ethanol fuel has no lead for the valves so I wondered if you sent the heads to the machine shop for guides and valves something I' must do on my 77 FLH 52 ridged frame Chopper. I used to work at the Airport and all these years used 100ll aircraft fuel but that's no longer available. This is a big problem with Classic Bikes and Cars. The crap fuel.
✌😏✌
a friend gave me my ir0nhead t00!
🙂
Awesome!
Maybe some old harley guys can help me out,I have a 1981 sportster with the dyna s ignition system. Do I need the factory icm hooked up to make the dyna s fire?
Nope. White wire to the 12 volt side of the coil and the other wire on the other side, and you're good to go. Be sure to use the 5 ohm coil with it.
@@SaddleTrampTV thank you,the dyna s is already installed but the factory icm from 81 is also hooked up to the coil still
@@joesmoth2610 You'll need two hot wires on the 12 volt side. That's probably why.
@@SaddleTrampTV I have come to the conclusion the old dyna module is not giving a signal anymore, thank you for the help it's hard to find good info on old bikes
Less and less like a turd meanS drive it so it runs
