I have watched this video so many times every time it build confidence I can do it . I recently learned to change the oil on my Jeep . Then I changed differential oil . Did basic stuff . Bought me a impact tools . I have to say it loud . Thank you so so much for explaining in detail. I have no words how much thankful I’m so explaining and taking time and showing things as you do it .
keep going man we all start somewhere it’s trial and error you can learn anything and everything 🤝
I hope you know that you're a national treasure. It's because of you that I have a chance of being able to do this myself instead of having to pay a mechanic, and Lord knows I would really rather not spend that money right now. Thanks you so much!
Wow thank you, I knew I was a self proclaimed genius, rock star, and legend and now I find out I can add a Nation Treasure to the list...Lol
Keep it in your pants man. This guy is a human just like the rest of us
Hey man thanks so much for the interlude of not taking off the water pump blots, super helpful
I just got an engine from the scrap yard to rebuild for my 02 jeep grand Cherokee, before it goes out on me. You couldn't be making these tear down videos at a better time for me! lol
Hi, I am looking to buy a used 2001 jeep grand cherokee with a jumped timing belt. How was the process of replacing the timing belt? I just need to know if its doable at-home by someone who knows cars, but isnt really a mechanic.
@@williamwarner6383 its doable. just take your time and make sure timing marks line up.
I was working on my 2003 Dodge ram 1500 and for the life of me I could not figure out where the 14th bolt was or where it went on my timing chain cover until I finally found your video and I could see the bolt sticking out... Thank you very much for making your video
You're very welcome. i'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thanks for watching.
Very good video Martin. Camera work is great. Information is great.... and no dead filler time. There are far too many instructional videos on UA-cam that are a waste of time. Thanks for making good videos. Highly recommended!
This video gave me the knowledge I needed to repair my Ram 1500's timing cover! Thank you for your help!!
Great Video!!
I'm not sure if it rubs Marty the wrong way but I'd like to add that when you wack the back of the cover if you've missed a bolt it can be decieving! So if it gives you trouble look for that bolt.
Thank you very much Mr. Martin. I just made it through the cover with y'all's help. Hopefully you will be showing me how to put er all back together after you show me how to replace the oil pump. I really couldn't do this all with your tips and guidance as this ole Dakota is a new adventure for me.
He is awesome sauce!!!!! All tutorials should be like this!!!
Just bought a dodge ram with a 4.7 so these videos are going to be handy, thanks!
Glad I could help.
I just bought a reman 4.7 from Powertrain that I'm putting in my mom's Jeep for her. I appreciate all your videos! I'm having trouble getting my socket into the tensioner bolt. It's recessed and seems to not leave much room.
You'll need a thinner wall and deep socket to reach that bolt
Remarkable tip on different bolt lengths!
Thank you I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful and thank you for watching.
@martinbuilt Just got the timing cover off. Your video was a great help! Especially showing what bolts to leave water pump on. I was surprised by how much coolant came pouring out. Be sure to have a large tray & a pan. I tried removing engine block drain bolt but wouldn't turn. Was afraid of it breaking. Though there is no place for gaskets that I can see on my Jeep 2005. 4.7L. Just seeing some old brittle remains of gasket material along inside edges.
Glad it helped, yes some later models just used RTV and a few O-rings around the coolant inlet and ports.
If you just let the coolant run the neighborhood cats and dogs think they are playing for FLorida State and lap it all up like it was Gatorade so no old coolant needs to be disposed of. Gotta love our furry friends. (Sarcasm PETA Patrollers)
Great Video, I have never done any of this before and need to replace the coolant system on my Aspen. These videos have been life savers on how to remove that balancer (I didn't even know the name of it until this video, that is how much of an amature I am)
Neither has he. U can tell that he's learning as he goes along. I was waiting for that timing chain cover to drop on his toes
Just done this job. Perfect video! Helped me immensely I’m very appreciative. Any way you happen to have a video of replacing all the seals and gaskets on/in the timing chain cover?
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it and found it. Helpful. You may want to check out this video where I do the entire timing chain and gear set replacement

@@martinbuilt done and done as well. My truck runs great now, that zip tie trick was amazing made it so much easier. I’m not a mechanic but I am very mechanically inclined. And honestly this is not necessarily an easy job for the average DIYer but with these two videos I got it done. In one night might I add.
@@martinbuilt I also used your video on lash adjuster replacement and done that job as well. This channel is a 4.7 owners dream. A video copy of a chilton Haynes manual.
I wish you had a video start to finish on how to do a head gasket job with engine still in the car. I'm getting ready to do that soon and there's not much content for that. I've done plenty of head gaskets before, even some rebuilds, but knowing what to expect on an engine/vehicle you've never done one on would be a huge help particularly for saving time.
Yeah I've been lucky so far I haven't had to do a head gasket or cylinder head replacement so far otherwise I would have a video out on it.
@@martinbuilt I may have to do one then.
Did you too, waste money on an instruction manual? Martin here basically makes you an expert. 🙌 great videos
Thank you!!Owe you a cold beer!!
Glad you found it helpful.😎
HUGE TIP TO FOLLOW he mentioned using 6 point sockets and that ain't no joke folk
For remembering the bolts, I was told long ago, the bolt that goes in the hole is the one that sticks out 1.5 times the diameter of the bolt.
Thanks for this and your other videos, I needed them. For the Dewalt not removing some of the bolts, I have noticed the more socket attachments that are used, the less impact effectiveness the Dewalt has. At least that is my experience with impact tools not performing to their full potential.
This is helping emensely with doing this job on my 04 H.O.
I'm glad you found it helpful thank you for watching.
If you do this when the engine is still in the vehicle what all do you have to remove to get to the timing chains? Did you remove the radiator, etc.? Great videos.
Can we see how it's done with the engine in its place inside the car. That's a whole different ball game.
Its about the same. Just some extra stuff in the way. If you have some basic understanding and knowledge of working on cars and truck then you should be fine.
Super easy but i started working on a 3000gt vr4 so working on a ram 1500 is super easy haha
Yeah it's just a little harder In the truck but not hard at all. These american v8s are the easiest to work on
remove the bumper raidatior
Hi Martin...great videos...thank you...just wondering if you have the video of this rebuilt engine? I am about to get ready to rebuild mine and I have used some of your upgrades but than my head gasket blew but I did not see any videos of you taking down the heads or rebuilding the whole engine...maybe you can point me to the right direction?
Perfect. Friend perfect.. Im rebuilding my 4.7 as i type this. Makes it way easier. Thanks👍👍
Glad it helped
This was a big help thanks a lot
You're very welcome I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful thank you for watching.
what do you do if that bolt you where talking about on the tentioner mine is striped and tight as heck
The replacement gasket comes with small water jacket seals that don't fit. The part number is 46000. Are they suppose to fit?
What are the torque specs for the timing cover and the tensioner????
Thank you .
Good job Martin I like you're job always when I watch you .
just out of curiosity, the bottom bolt hole for the thermostat housing hose broke in the back. the little protrusion cracked straight to the timing chain cover so the bolt no longer holds firm.
could I in theory shave that protrusion down, add a few washers and two backer nuts instead of replacing the entire cover?
Thanks for the timing chain info
No problem 👍
I don't remember where but watched a video you had a tip and trick on how to remove a stock harmonic balancer with a allthread bolt, some nuts and washers. How well does that workout? I really did not want to remove the radiator and condenser out to do timing chain guided and tensioners. Or do you recommend taking out the radiator and condenser? Do you know where I can find that? Or do you remember the list of parts so that I can pick those up at a local machine shop? Thanks in advance.
I believe this is the video that you're referring to. If you have the hydraulic cooling fan it may be very difficult to remove the harmonic dampener without removing the fan and radiator.
Thank you for watching.
ua-cam.com/video/lTkLx4vddwE/v-deo.html
How do you replace that seal
I used a 6 point attempting to replace my tensioner and it rounded over anyway. Tried a spiral one next. Still no luck. Time for the ultraviolence now.
Now that sucks. You may need to cut or grind the head of the bolt off and then once the tensioner comes off the bolt should come right out. Good luck.
Is it important to take them off in a particular order?
What I want to know is would my 5 speed bolt up to a 318 or 360 in place of that junk 3.7?
So from what I see if by chance I am doing this on an 03 4.7 on a Durango and removing the tensioner and the bolt breaks or the threads strip out, I should be ok by just replacing the timing cover or does that bolt thread into the block?
You earned a like and sub. Great video Martin, thanks.
Where can I get valve covers like them? Nice!
I have a 4.7 L 2000 Durango can I get most of the freeze plugs out with Pulling the motor out
Good video. I’m a little late watching it but I’m am just now doing one of these. My cover did not have a gasket, only silicone, can the gasket you can get work instead of just using silicone?
Yes you can use the gasket instead of the silicone and O ring combination.
I've done it before and it works just fine.
@@martinbuilt
I bought the gasket but ended up using the silicone because the gasket didn’t allow the cover to sit tightly up to the centering dowels and against the engine block. I was also concerned that the thickness of the gasket would set the cover further out and since the accessories all mount to the cover I was concerned the serpentine belt wouldn’t be in line with the crankshaft pulley. Anyway it’s all back together and back to the customer.
What if you don’t put the idle sprocket on the dot section what if randomly spin then just line it on the dot,do you know what I mean, like what’s it timing purpose if any real timing purpose like a cam or crack has ???
OK, thank you, Martin! What's strange is that the gasket kit came with a tube of gray silicone, no kidding!
Good watch! Replacing head gaskets in my 05 KJ -Thanks
I know this is an older vid, but it's new to me. I recently bought an 04 Jeep Liberty Sport w/ 3.7L VIN K for the wife. I'm going to have to do and engine swap on it. So before I drop the new-ish motor in I figured it would be be best if I changed out some of the hard to reach parts and gaskets before I put it in. Does this video apply to my particular application? Also, the "new to me" motor has about 105K miles on it. Would you recommend changing all the timing chains, guides, tensioners, idlers, ect.? I do remember reading somewhere that those items are "supposed" to be good for the "life" of the vehicle/motor.
If these are just plain old dumb*ss questions, I do apologize for my ignorance on the topic of this specific make and engine. This is the first Jeep/Chrysler product I've owned. It's also the first time I've worked on this particular engine. All of my experience is with Chevrolet and Ford, aside from normal maintenance and brake jobs, alternators, ect.
Thank You Sir for your time and effort. I appreciate it more than you know!!
Hope everyone that reads this is or has a great day.
More importantly, Y'all be safe out there!!
Never forget rule number one, as far as working in a shop goes. The goal for today is to NOT die and leave with the same number of digits we showed up with.
I would leave the timing chains and guides alone I would say those are still good for another 50,000 plus miles.
And as far as putting a newer 3.7 engine just make sure the one that you use has the same type of ECM in other words a 3 or 4 plug ECM.
Thank you for watching.
Behind the timing cover is 3 gaskets are they only for coolant passages or do any of the holes allow for oil to go through.
Yeah, those are all for coolant passages
@@martinbuilt thank you very much
Was there a gasket behind that? Im fixing to change one on a 2011 ram 1500 with the 4.7 L v8?
On a 2011 you will just have O rings where the water passages are the rest is all a Gray silicone.
Thank you!!
I'm glad you found it helpful.
What is the thread size of the center bolt , the one that goes into the engine block?
Great video... Rip headphone users though.
Top speed brother....!.!.!
Thanks for watching!
It's amazing job my friend, Thank'ssssssssssssss😜
My tensioner bolt rounded 😑 i did everything you said AND I barely started i yhink it was previously rounded off any advice now?
That sucks...you may have to cut the head of the bolt off and then have to replace the tensioner.
nice vid, wow, lotta work, how many spins on the ole od to warrant the time chn needing replaced?
Thanks, I don't understand what you're asking.
He was asking how many miles on the chains before it needs to be replaced.
Great video, thanks for the tips!
Quick question: I had everything lined up for top dead center both cam gears V8 marks @ twelve idler @ twelve and crank @ six. Removed tensioners and right side rotated to ten, maybe eleven o'clock positions. Will it be good after new chains and tensioners are installed? Will it go back to twelve o clock position ?
Yes use a vise grip on the Camshaft even though I don't like doing that, to rotate the camshaft when you are ready to install the cam gear and chain.
Martin.. Is there a torque procedure for reinstalling the timing cover? Bolt torque requirement and torque pattern??
Timing Chain Cover Bolt. 40 (ft-lbs) I would use a cross pattern
Great Video
itd be great if you
could add some information on the gaskets needed to reinstall the Cover. Not much Information on UA-cam on Reinstalling the gaskets cover on the correct way.

Martin - did you do a video on how to reinstall the cover?? Is there just one gasket??

I Got coolant leaking inside the engine from the front of the engine down into the oil pan. What all do I need to replace? Where do you think it's leaking from? Wanna sell it once running. Would you replace the water pump too?
if your looking to sell it, replace the timing cover gasket and hope it's not a blown head gasket.
great to know as i have 2 of these, 04 Columbia edition 4x4 and an 03 Larado 2wd and i need rearends for both, any insight ,links for rebuild or replace?
One of my favorite places on Earth Pick-A-Part you could get a rear axle for $137.50 plus taxes
Is that how easy it is when its installed in the dodge truck??
yep, the hardest thing is that one bolt that holds the self tensioner.
Martin, I have a dumb question, on my 2008 Dodge Dakota 3.7 V6, on my leaking timing chain cover gasket, do I need to use gray silicone even though the gasket material (paper/asbestos?) has an elevated rubber seam that runs around the gasket permeter? If yes, do I put the silicone on the inside or outside of the rubber seam? I've been watching your excellent videos, I'm doing my lash adjusters & rocker arms, too! Phil
If you have the gasket that has the rubber seam all the way around, I would not use ant silicone. Thank you for watching!

I was wondering what gasket set did you use. Felpro lists a set # TCS46000 but neither RockAuto nor Amazon list it as a good part number for the 05 Dakota 4.7 vin N motor yet others say it is a usable part, your thoughts.
Thinking of doing this next week any response would be helpful.
That is a good part but the later models went to rubber O-rings and silicone.
@@martinbuilt thanks, do u happen to know what years can use the complete gasket?
@Bernie Knaupp Actually, I think you could use the full gasket on all the years they just started using the O rings and silicone to save money.
