Christopher Nolan provides incredible emotional experiences in his films, life moments, memories. Watching his films in the cinema is always a life event, which is why amongst a pandemic I drove an hour and a half to and paid over $300 for private screening cinema to watch Tenet. Spoiler alert, it was a waste of money, I hated this movie, and there’s a specific reason why.

    4:02 TENET'S "CONFUSING QUESTIONS" ANSWERED:
    1. Kat is not inverted but the bullet is. The inverse radiation caused by the inverted bullet is more harmful. It is already explained by Clémence Poésy's character at the beginning of the film.
    2. The very first time the Protagonist got inverted, he didn't care much about wearing the protective suit coz he was running out of time. The second time he was more cautious.
    3. He is not shooting himself. He is just unloading the gun out of sheer anxiety and just so that the non-inverted Protagonist couldn't use that gun.
    4. Apparently, the "bad" future folks knew not only about Andrei's health issues but also how ambitious and determined he is, who is ready to sacrifice his own life. Maybe, that makes him the best candidate for them.
    5. Umm... that global warming plot point was just a McGuffin for the "bad" future folks to invert the whole world. Wouldn't consider it to be a "confusing" doubt.
    6. Michael Caine Cinematic Universe? Seriously?
    7. The word 'protagonist' was introduced in the story when Priya said that it would take a fresh-faced protagonist to get close to Sator. And, the word got carried away from there. Also, calling JDW's character 'the Protagonist' is not a gimmick. There's a lot of thinking that went behind it. Cannot explain everything here. Nolan himself has explained his stance on why he named his lead that way in many interviews.
    8. Apparently, the Protagonist's got a flat arc.
    9. Certainly, the Protagonist sees himself in Kat as both of them have no one in their respective lives other than the mission for the Protagonist and Max for Kat. Also, for the sake of the mission, the Protagonist couldn't simply let Kat die as she is the only key to get closer to Sator and not letting Sator kill himself.
    10. NEIL DOES NOT KNOW EVERY DAMN THING. He only knows certain things that he must know. Ignorance is their ammunition. C'mon!
    11. No. It is clearly explained in the film that the "bad" future folks don't believe in the grandfather paradox. Hence, they are willing to kill their ancestors even though they are living right now because of their ancestors.
TENET definitely rewards its audiences. And, I completely understand that why many folks didn't enjoy it.. which is absolutely fine. But that doesn't mean it is a BAD FILM. During my first watch, even I was quite puzzled and overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the film. But that didn't stop me from watching it again and again. And, it became better on every rewatch. Sure, the film's execution is not perfect, as far as action is concerned. Maybe, this film is way way way ambitious than Nolan might've ever imagined. Maybe that's why the execution didn't feel polished or well-planned. But hey, such shortcomings won't affect my love for Nolan and his films. The dude's got no chill. Never fails to amaze me.
TL;DR. The positives of this film triumph over its shortcomings like how our world dominates over the actions of inversion. Pissing in the wind, essentially.
P.S., 5:08. C'mon man! Neil was wearing a small oxygen mask in the previous shots and now he is just switching to a big mask while he is holding his breath. Could you please stop nitpicking the entire damn thing? For real? And, one more thing, if you still feel TENET is a bad film then I might suggest you watch a video essay by one of your fellow video essayists, @FilmSpeak.

First off: I see and partially agree with your points. I just want to inject some detail as to the areas of the argument where my accordance is limited.
Personally, I don't see a problem with him dialing it back with the establishing shots and not specifically holding on every threat. Isn't that kind of the point of a realistic, close to first person experience and also what elevated movies like Alien? You don't always see the threat and it might be because it escaped your perception or your vantage point didn't allow for it. Furthermore, here it's not always the protagonist's action that advances the plot as you insinuated you'd like it to be which, I'd argue, can make them seem more relatable and human than if they were the sole driving force. To support my point, here's some anecdotal evidence: I like The Dark Knight but I didn't like the third act time crunch scene, I like Tenet and I think the third act is at least appropriately well done.
Also, I don't think it's normal for soldiers to just recklessly traverse the battlefield at full speed like in an Assassin's Creed game trailer. That is left up for the main protagonist to do, in this case the one who wasn't specifically instructed to fail at defusing the bomb like all of the soldiers outside of the splinter unit (to keep Sators past self from noticing he would lose) but who was actually on a deadline to regain control of the algorithm.
Yes, the film is so fast that it's easy to miss crucial details, but I honestly see this very "problem" in every Nolan movie. A lot is left up for interpretation in any of his movies as well, just remember Rachels and Harveys location being switched, presumably but unexplainedly the Jokers conscious decision. Frankly speaking, as someone who usually intends to fully concentrate my attention on the screen during a movie watching experience, I - probably along with people who consider themselves purists in the way many well-known directors that advocate for people seeing their films on decent setups promote - am fine with that most of the time.
As far as the mentioned continuity errors are concerned: Yeah, I'm sure those exist in the movie and they are certainly even more fatal if every piece of information is vital to the story.
Them taking off the masks could be explained away by it being a closed tent supplied with the right variety of oxygen but them just having sat down and still being wearing their masks, though. That might be a little bit of a stretch, although I cannot tell without a rewatch, of course.
EDIT: They were in the process of changing masks to the ones built into the suits when you saw them with them off, ya dingus.
In Response to your criticisms about inconsistencies: despite Neil promoting the view of determinism, he himself casts doubt on that very notion, so it is merely a belief of a character, not a rule of the movie universe, therefore it cannot really be contradicted by one.
Lastly, any piece of storytelling with rulesets that differ from those of the real world is going to fall apart at some level of inspection. It's about whether it is consistent within itself and holds up up to a reasonable degree, reasonable being defined as whether you're able to suspend your disbelief, having understood all you could reasonably be expected to at any given point of the experience. I, for one, could, although I usually get irritated by that kind of problem very quickly. I see why one wouldn't though, either because they simply come to a different conclusion than me at some stage of it or misunderstand something in consequence of the pace.

Hayden. This is so frustrating. Why should you be able to explain it in 5 minutes? He isn’t trying to shoot him self in the Freeport, he knows that his past self is going to try and kill him so he is getting rid of the bullets. Why do you think the plot needs to be unpacked and explained? This film is about manipulating time and everything in the film is doing that, there are conversations that jump across time and place. Things that you don’t question. “The policy is to suppress” - we are getting the same experience as the members of TENET. I don’t think this is for everyone but it’s a big experiment that he has earned the right to make. He can do whatever he fucking wants. This is such a bold and original film where Nolan chose to focus on the experience of the concept rather than giving you all the things in a film you think you need. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before so of course it isn’t perfect. But I would bet that it will inspire many many others in the future. I’m so glad it exists and I love it exactly the way it is.

    • @HillierSmith
      @HillierSmith  3 роки тому +2

Hey Jack, first good to hear from you. You've been doing some phenomenal work since we last spoke.
That's a great idea and point if he was preventing shooting himself. Was there a moment during the linear sequence where the linear protagonist takes a shot and the gun was empty? This motivating a clearer visualisation as to why inverted protagonist needed to shoot and dismantle the gun?
If not then the point doesn't land, it's a literal failure of Chekovs Gun.
"The Policy is to Surpress" is another aspect that frustrated me, that's the same expression from the scientists "Don't question it, just feel it"
However it comes back to my point in if that's the case don't create rules about how inversion works and over-complicate it with unneeded exposition. Just let us feel it. He can't have his inverted cake and eat it.
One of my first points in my video is me agreeing with you, this experiment is INCREDIBLE, the best idea I've heard in years. Nolan as one of the best directors today has meant he has earned the right to do whatever he wants, I agree. It doesn't mean he's immune to criticism when he doesn't achieve it's potential.
For example I would have loved in the final act for the Protagonist to fully use Inversion to his advantage. Imagine if a threat was on a third floor of a building, and the protagonist saw a slab of inverted rubble coming back into a wall also on the third floor, he stands on that slab and the inverted collapse of that slab propells him up into the third floor to get the flank on the threat. I WANTED TO SEE THAT!
If that's too cheesy, lets keep the same idea but simple. A sniper on the third floor, he's pinned them down, a piece of inverted slab rubble starts going back up, and the protagonist sees his opportunity, he stands up in clear view of the sniper and the sniper fires, but as he shoots the inverted slab comes into view and blocks the bullet, giving the protagonist that split second advantage to aim and fire and clear out the sniper. I WANTED TO SEE THAT!
What I'm saying is, the third act climatic scene had some incredible potential and ideas of how Inversion can be used to progress towards a destination, instead what happened was a building blew up in two directions of time to distract two guards, that's not enough.
Again I really really really wanted to love this film, growing up with Doctor Who, Back to the Future, The Terminator. Hell do you even remember my trilogy idea where because of time travel only two movies actually exist? This concept of time travel/inversion was up my alley and I was ready, it's just a shame it didn't execute it's idea as well as it could have. I'm with you in being glad this film exists, and I LOVE that this film has compelled me to be discussing this film with film lovers such as yourself. I just wish it was better.

  • @alexman378
    @alexman378 3 роки тому +5

Many of the things you asked are clear in one viewing. Why is the inverted bullet more dangerous? Radiation. Why is the Protagonist willing to do everything to save Kat? We see in the opening that he is deeply loyal and tries to save everyone he can, even at personal risk. Why is he trying to shoot himself? He’s not, have you held a gun before? If someone is holding and shaking your arm like that when your finger is on the trigger, you may shoot by accident. Why doesn’t he have a name? Because he’s a spy, and they said it’s best they don’t know each other’s names anyway, it’s why there’s a theory that Neil isn’t Pattinson’s real name and he’s actually Kat’s son, Max. When Neil said “what’s happened happened”, it’s also followed by “it’s an expression of faith, not an excuse to do nothing”, meaning that what has happened did happen and all they can do is keep pushing to change the outcome, not the event itself. Example, Kat did get shot, that couldn’t be changed, even though they fixed her eventually, she still had the scar from the bullet.

And i got major parts of this in one go without even finding anything about it. This was made confusing on purpose but when you peel off its layers and layers and layers and get one character at a time just one and make his or her story line separate from others. Do this for every single character. Boom you will have your answer.
The only error in this film is, nolan thought his fans will reconnect everything even when he dont shoot it. Even when he dont tells it. He wanted us to fill in the gaps. And we let him down with low our low IQ minds.. and i am thankful to him, that he gave me a chance, and yes i filled the gaps.

I respect cause its just your opinion & i admit that TENET has its flaws like a lack of charecter development & some pointless caos. But heres one thing, a regular concept of time travelling is not as simple as going into a box and travelling forwards or backwards through time. But if time travel will be possible someday then it can only be done by the concept of invert entropy & the visualisation & representation of how an Kinetically & thermodynamically inverted object would act on a non- inverted liner timeline is depicted as precisely in a timespan of 2hr 30min screentime cause ''what happens has already happened''.
Thanks for making a video on it but I more or less don't agree with you calling TENET a debacle.

I wouldnt be surprised if the director planned on one thing but they werent prepared to execute it first take so they missed out on alot of potential shots and brainstorm time. Maybe the building scene was written, story boarded, with the set constructed before shooting large chunks of the film.

I am completely sorry to burst your bubble, and with all due respect. But even my 16 year old son, got the basic key elements of this movie. The thing is that possibly you have to watch several times, or do you need somebody to explain it to you.
Ok, you have questions maybe I am going to try to explain some of it:
    1. Tenet is a science fiction drama that uses the framework and rhythm of a spy thriller.
    2. The movie is a retro feed convergence of difference time lines.
    3. Is not a movie for lazy mind people, that's the genius of the movie the details are there.
    4. Remember is a spy movie, per se the who is who, motifs and goals are the mystery itself.
    5. Do you get that the Stalsk-12 and the Attack of the Opera House are happening at the same time? Do you got that, no?
    6. Did you get that there is a team combating the Sator's army (the guys in grey), while the others are blasting shit, so the Sator's army can get even more distracted by the outcome (reverse) of the events/explosions. So the red team can prevent the activation of the algorithm.
    7. Can you chew bubblegum and walk at the same time, or not?
    8. Is not just reverse entropy, or the second law of thermodynamics. There are more details, like the movie is a palindrome itself... The narrative and the characters arcs
    9. You know you can watch Marvel comic books based, and other really pre-digested movies are available.
    10. Yes, you got a Hitchcock's midnight refrigerator collection of moments after a month. Yes, that happened (thoughts) when your brain works producing an analytical byproduct, as consequence of feeding with stimuli.
    11. Don't worry thinking by yourself could be scary for some people, in your case you can articulate words/sentences, besides screaming tantrums. Just breath.
    12. I hope you can one day understand that there are other forms of recreation, such as books, and that these could be even more complicated than a Nolan average movie. Read a book, a book doesn't bite.

TP: "But for me it's just the beginning?"
Neil: "We get up to some stuff. You're gonna love it, you'll see. This whole operations a temporal pincer."

7:30 mins into it and I can’t watch another minute. There’s absolutely no objectivity that you present when critiquing the film. Simply because YOU cannot understand it, doesn’t mean it makes it a bad film. That’s all you had to say, that you weren’t able to comprehend the film. Every question you asked is indeed explained in the film, even down to every detail like why is getting shot inverted worse than getting shot un-inverted. You’re a good editor, but stick to UA-cam videos.

    • @MobiusStudiosJack
      @MobiusStudiosJack Рік тому

@@VegetaWithAdidas I've seen the film multiple times and while it makes more sense on re-watches, not by much. Consider this. If someone is making an artsy film, then it's fine for it to not make sense fully on subsequent rewatches. But Nolan's goal is spectacle. He's said it many times. So if we as an audience (or at least 90% of us) can't understand what's going on, the film has failed to provide spectacle, and thus has failed as a film. Other Nolan movies, like Memento, Inception and more are comprehensible on a first watch and really make sense on a second or third watch. Having seen all of Nolan's films, this is the ONLY one that doesn't make sense to me seeing it again and again. At some point we need to fault the filmmaker for not making the movie designed for spectacle clear enough rather than saying "just because you don't understand it doesn't make it bad." It does. It DOES make it bad if the film's goal, to sell spectacle, DOESN'T work for the audience it's made for. Arthouse films can get away with it. But a movie designed for the theater, a movie designed to be awesome for audiences that can't get around it's own confusing logic for 95%+ of viewers has fundamentally failed its goal. So that's what dictates if a film is too complex; if it beats the vast majority of the audience's ability to comprehend it. Other Nolan films arguably have more complex premises but explain them much more skillfully and effectively without devoting a ton of time to exposition.
The other issue is it's pretty emotionless overall, the dialogue is bland and more. It's visually awesome, but why should we as an audience care if the filmmaking has failed?
I like all of Nolan's other films. Tenet was the only one that required me to pay very close attention on subsequent viewings in order to understand it, removing the enjoyment from the process, and still didn't make sense in a lot of ways, or at least in a satisfying manner. Same for the 3 people I saw it with-- and as far as I can tell, most of the internet.
Maybe they're not plot holes, but they're not exactly shown well. Let's say we have a movie where in the very background of a shot, blurred out, the main character is shot and killed and we don't see him for the rest of the movie and he's never mentioned again. Well, yes, if you go frame by frame, really examine the dialogue and watch incredibly closely, you will be able to understand it. But if the filmmaking doesn't support the audience understanding it without having to ruin their experience, it's failed.

  • @seth_andal

Good video. Love your content, but I completely disagree that Tenet failed. I love this film enough to fully respond if it means anything lmao
I think the duality between "don't understand it, feel it" and the explanations of the actual mechanics works because these rules help establish the stakes (such as the inverted bullet that shot through Kat) but are also eased from its deepest intricacies with moments like "don't understand it, feel it." There's some flexibility here with how the viewer wants to take it in--there is still satisfaction with both not understanding the mechanics at all or understanding every single moment.
The exposition is inherent for this high concept to work, so at least in my opinion it's unfair to complain about it existing, and the whole film's themes on reality and trust thrive on Nolan's specific urges to the audience. The best example is when Neil says "What's happened's happened, which is an expression of *faith in the mechanics of the world*."
    Questions in the first half:
    - Inverted bullets are more dangerous because of the radiation caused from reverse entropy. Laura says this when the Protagonist says he almost got hit by one in the field.
    - Kat wasn't inverted when she was shot.
    - The rule of him not being able to come into contact with himself is made to justify the gear (and hide his identity in the first version of the scene).
    - He was shooting himself as a means to empty the gun and was also getting closer to the turnstile this way. He knows he would not harm himself because he already went through this sequence before.
    - Sator receives the encapsulations because he was at the right place at the right time. This is explained in the flashback scene where he stumbles upon the encapsulation with instructions for the rest of the pieces.
    - Global warming was mentioned during the planning for the Oslo heist, and it is only meant to further explain the future's perspective/motive. Not the main focus of the film at all, so the mention of it is completely fine in my opinion.
    - Because he's Michael Caine.
    - He's called the Protagonist because, like a lot of the ways the Tenet organization is portrayed in the movie, they're supposed to be as discreet as possible (no small talk, no exchange of information; hence "ignorance is our ammunition"). This artistic choice to leave the character unnamed fits this perfectly. Just like how there is no backstory to the character.
    - In the most basic sense, the Protagonist's character arc is about how the world works. Throughout the film he's always trying to stop things from happening or asking if there's a way to change outcomes. In the end he finds out he's the one who employs the opposite of this by establishing the Tenet organization itself (and creating a temporal pincer movement, a mechanic he was challenging the whole movie).
    - The Protagonist's love for Kat is in the same vein as the other relationships in the movie. They are the main thread in the story's attempt to show how love and tenets (a tenet is a strong principle someone lives by) interact with each other in different people. Love, like Kat's love for her son, or love, like Sator's intent to keep Kat from anyone else ("if I can't have you , no one can").
    - You can assume that Neil would know they would meet, but not exactly there.
    - I don't understand how "what's happened's, happened" contradicts itself. It simply explains how their reality was inevitable; this is explained with all the effects coming before the causes in the movie.
And with all TDK trilogy references I can understand where these points are coming from, but at the end of the day Tenet is firstly a plot-driven spectacle meant to push the technical boundaries of filmmaking, it isn't a character-study like the Batman films. I could explain the Stalsk-12 mission but this comment is long enough. Cheers.

Also the whole rant regarding the scene at 11:40 is just dumb...The Protagonist tries to get to the bunker but Ives says that if he’s seen, it’s all for nothing. We literally see shots of Sator’s henchmen 10 seconds before the tower explodes, giving time for them to move in.

I d reckon "I hate TENET" is quite subjective. Yes it hasnt reached the 'Nolanesque' hit of his collection, but it has created a GREAT experience for a large audience. Like Nolan says, Tenet is supposed to be a new way of experiencing his work, sometimes you dont need to understand the plot, You watch it for the whole experience like David Lynch's work. I mean just visually, it won the Oscars, the plot is very unique and original, actors went through tremendous work to shoot the scenes, the score was one of the best in 2020, action scenes were cooler than ICE, and for Protagonist being a mystery was something Nolan tried as an inspiriation to "the Man with no Name", but he did build some strong character development on screen with Robert Pattinson and David Washington.
There are a few unexplainable portions but all of those could be answered, but it would be a sacrifical take on watching the movie repetitively, and then again, its not for everyone, but it does create a new genre, where each time I watch it, I feel different, sometimes feels like Im watching a completely different movie. Then again I respect your decision of hating it, but I found it fascinating. So "Dont try to understand it, feel it"

New Subscriber here ! 👌Tenet might not be the best movie , but I think it's one of the most ambitious movies ever created and that in itself is brilliant , atleast Nolan isn't doing a rinse and repeat like Disney who 9 times out of 10 can't be bothered to create an original movie because they know they have the financial backing of marketing to get people to watch their movies , Nolan is where he is because he's never been afraid to push the envelope , Nolan has said his next movie will be a horror he will most likely have a smaller budget and will have to think about nailing his story , I'm excited to see him return to his Routes of Memento & the prestige When he was at his best 💯

I feel like I could explain every single plot "inconsistency" and misunderstanding you brought up in this vid, but it would take too long for me to type if nobody is going to read it. I'll start with the first only, at 5:08 you ask why the inverted Neil is wearing a mask in the first shot and 10 seconds later he isn't. When you are out in the real world while inverted, you must wear a mask, so they all wore masks to get into the air tight briefing room and now that they've all sat down and ready for briefing they can take them off. If anyone has any more questions I'll answer them.

I think the problems are resolved if you assume that traveling backwards allows altering time. If time is alterable, then (for example), the need for the destruction of the building must be explained by a previous iteration of the same time sequence that informs the mission objectives.
