How to do a True 3 Angle Valve Job SUPER CHEAP Using Neway Tools (as good as any pro machine shop!)

  • Do a real high tolerance 3 angle valve job at home that rivals any ultra expensive machine shop for less than the cost they would charge, plus you get tools that last a lifetime and you can do as many jobs as you want. Neway is US made and has been around since 1952. They have cutters for any size valves. Some professionals use Neway but most have given this style of cutter up because it takes too long. Not a problem for an enthusiast!
    Follow the cutting method with a simple dykem and very light duty valve lap to verify you valve contact area and seat width. This is the most accurate and highest tolerance method in the world, and the only reason your machine shop says it's "not necessary" is that they can't figure out a way to make money off the labor and skill it takes to do it right. They invest tens of thousands in special machines that can cut everything really fast and pass all the cost on to you. Prices in my area are so ridiculously high I just can't justify letting them do it anymore. You got the time and care about the job, you can do it better than the shops can with this method.
    Another cool thing about this method is the mobility of it- you can go to a friends over the weekend and do a valve job in his garage. You can do it in a hotel room the night before a race when you just burnt a valve on the track qualifying the day before (I actually did this on a friend's vintage Norton racer). Why more car guys don't know about this and don't do it more often is really a mystery to me.
    The head in the video is a Lotus 907 high compression engine with 104 cams, basically a road racing spec. It's an expensive setup and gets a little over 200hp from 2.0 liters, this is the same engine used on the Lotus Esprit's. This method proves you can do this with high dollar high performance stuff, I have used it on Porsche, Ferrari, and other Lotus engines over the years.
    If you don;t know anything about valve work or engine building then you need to read or watch some videos about the subject. There are many other tolerances and issues you need to address beyond what this video shows including installed valve height, valve spring tension, valve guide tolerances, overall valve length, and general valve and valve seat geometry theory.
    Neway tools are available from several resellers including WOODWARD EQUIPMENT CHS, that's where I get my tools. Another company repping Neway is called Goodson. These tools are lifetime investment grade tools.
    DO NOT BUY the Chinese and Indian kits on Amazon and Ebay. They are AWFUL. I tried many of them over the years and they all were junk. Don't be fooled into it by the low price. The Neways are expensive and they work and last- a dual angle cutter is about $120 and a single angle is around $75. Well worth the cost and each cutter usually has a 5,, range so you can use them for all kinds of applications. Neway also has kits for specific jobs.

    Back in ... (thinks) 1987, I paid, wait for it, £928 for a Neway complete cutter set, for seats and valves. I have used it for so many engines, from lawnmower to Ford V6. The tungsten bits still cut like when I first bought it, nothing to beat this tool set for quality & durability. After cutting, doesn't take long, all you need is a light pass with fine paste, & job done.
    I don't bother with a 3 angle seat, because the 30 & 60 degree cuts quickly coke over, so I just cut one 45 seat, about 1/8th inch wide, works fine. I've just stripped a head which has done 75,000 miles, have photos to prove my point.

    if a person has the heads off and the time and ability they should be able to do the valve job with those simple cutters on their work bench or kitchen table. The best part of DIY is that you can be sure the valve seats were done right and lap those valves into those seats right too. There's no telling what engine machine shops really do.

    Fun fact, on average most engines have an air flow of around 300 ft per second in the intake. As a comparison 88 ft per second is equivalent to 60mph, tiny imperfections and ridges matter A LOT.💯👌

    Dont forget that this changes how deep the valve sits in the seat and it will change the valve stem height, some engines have very tight tolerances for that (like +/- 0.5mm) and those engines that use solid tappets instead of hydraulic followers definitely will need camshaft gap clearances checked and adjusted accordingly. In my opinion (I am no expert) valve seat cutting needs to be done in extremely small steps because you can easily sink the valve too deep by cutting too much material because then cutting the valve steam also has very tight clearances in specification.

    One of my 30 year Mechanics knew I had always used an old Souix Valve Grinder to do my own cylinder heads and drempt of doing good performance work. One day he handed me a set of these cutters exactly like you have and told me that's his gift to me for always treating him good and for being fair to everyone... Your Video is a dream come true!     Good video. Thanks for posting. I agree on the comment that Neway products are not inexpensive. And since they provide limited kits, you really need to study what you are purchasing. Watch the arbor diameters and the cutter inside diameters, and then the seat diameter of the tool. Also the T-handles vary from 3/8 to 1/2 inch on the inside and this also impacts the cutter being purchased. Ask me how I know. 😊. A good valve job can be had with these tools and this video is quite helpful. I have several heads to fix and so purchasing these tools made sense. And of course the learning process is priceless. If you have only one head to correct, it may make more sense to take it to the machine shop.

    Have used Neway on Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Polaris, some of which turned uphill of 11,000 RPM! never had any issues other than the time involved. This was at a dealership and the factory reps had no problems with these methods.

    I love neeway I started using neeway about 20 years ago and was dubious at first but with just a little practice and common sense the achievable finish is brilliant and without lapping a perfect gas tight seal can be achieved,still recommend lapping though,and are a first choice if I had the money I’d definitely buy a set but lately I’ve had to make my own and with inspiration from these but I’m definitely going buy a set for the toolbox one day

    Nice informative video Chris.....I also don't understand how a 2 or 1 angle job would control the critical factory seat Width spec ??? .....Just asking, would some kind of cutting Oil & maybe a weak anti-Chatter pilot Spring help in any significant way to get good results ? Many people just don't go far enough at work to achieve that level of customer satisfaction at a affordable price tag. That extra process to make sure the valves are seated properly after cutting, would be classified as the 'professional package' or something you just gotta pay like an extra 200$ for like come on man. hah

    thanks for the quick response yeh its a one timer Im ordering aluminum heads for my 65 pontiac and I hear that when you get massed produced heads they arent always perfect. Theres a few UA-cams on the subject, so Im thinking maybe order them bare as it takes months to get them. One place, KRE ,doesnt even reply to my VM or emails I guess they are so busy.
    Can you tell me if the valves on the heads if I order them and they arent perfect would lapping solve the problem. One video shows they are .009 out will lapping fix that much? Thanks I really dug your video one of the few I watched entirely

    your valve fitting technique is just fine.it is a common sense machine shop technique.
    Doing a 3 angle valve job have a geometric goal, it is to adjust the contact width and locate the contact at the center of the valve face.
    a side benefit is a slightly increased breathing capacity so they sell the 3 ancle valve as a performance valve job.
    most machine shops do it the leasy way so they cut the 45 degrees and the top 30 degrees with the net result that when the valve / seat wears out, the contact becomes way too large and the spring force can't overcome the carbon build up , the valve loses its cooling capacity and burns up.
    on many years, the manufacturers done 2 angle valve seats that resulted to many burnt valves at very low mileage ( just past the warrenty period ! )

    In practice, it turns out that about the optimum angle for the intake valve from the bore centerline is about 18 degrees. For the exhaust, where shrouding is less important, the optimum angle is approximately 10 degrees.

    yes sir. You are correct but using lapping compound during the checking process screws you for fixing it. Blue it to see where it sits, if it needs to be adjusted, recut it, reblue it, if it's good, then lap compound it. then you're done

    Really great work. I built 706 ci motor. Several blower n turbo motors Hi dollar machining. Every motor i was talked into professional doing didnt last. U put a lot more care when its yur own work and toys.

    There is no question that this is a good product. The problem is it is very expensive for what you get. You also must make sure you know the process so you do not order the wrong pieces. This product should be no more than $200 for everything you need to do a complete head. You should be able to order a kit for a specific head with a specific valve guide size. Get real on your pricing please.

    I just got a set of these and the expanding pilot so it is more tolerant of slightly worn guides, and I have already done two heads for the Stovebolt 235/261. Stovebolt angles are a bit weird, the intake is a 31 degree seat cut, exhaust is 46. Thee tools leave leave an excellent finish. I got the hand crank and it’s great.

    Thanks for sharing, this is great! A question- would it be possible to cut the seats for oversized valves in this way? Obviously you would need to clean up the bowl area under the seat manually but wondering if you could do it with these cutters. Thanks!

      I once did a job where I took 39mm oversized valves and the head had a 38mm diameter, and indeed the cutter removed the material and worked in that situation. Problem is it took forever as these tools are not designed to cut much material away, and a deep cut wears the cutters pretty fast. If you were doing 1mm it's possible, but if it's in the realm of several mm's or a 1/4" I think it's going to be difficult. Usually really big oversize stuff requires some porting and clean up around the seat area, and obviously these tools can't do that.

    Can you post a link to where you got these tools for such a great price (granted this video is 2 years old). I'm looking at the prices and for the few times I may do this it seems to be cheaper to have it performed. I also found this while searching for 22r porting which that in itself is probably a pure waste of time and money. However excellent video and I learned something for free thank you.

    Super cool. I’m a cnc machinist (15 years) but obviously I cant machine stuff for myself in my shop anymore and I dont have a 3d cad for my engine. The only thing that I could do is facing the head and boring the block. Anyway, this is my first engine rebuild ever ( subaru ez30), so I’l be more than happy to do a valve job in my living room :p.     Threw a timing belt on my 944 and decided to do some head work while I'm replacing the bent valves and all the machine shops quoted me hundreds of dollars for a three angle valve seat job. For sure going to take this approach instead.

      @@frankdavidson9675 944s are interference engines. If the timing isn't within a certain window the valves will slam into the pistons. This can bend them or break them off inside the cylinder.

    Hello, I just came across your R93 videos and the last one with the comparison was the best. You answered a lot of conjecture over the difference in models especially the bolt body’s and bolt heads. I was wondering if were still going to do the video about the barrels and chassis? Will a tactical 2 barrel work on the LRS and LRS2? Are the tactical 2 barrels to big for the other chassis’s? I have a LRS2 and often wondered about these differences that exist as parts become more rare. It would be nice to know what works before purchasing. Thanks

      The UIT, CISM, LRS and LRS2 are based on the R93 platform uses a 29mm barrel shank and is compatible with any R93 barrel available, plug and play. The Tactical 2 uses a 34mm barrel shank and is totally incompatible with all of the R93 platform. Tac2 barrels also don't work on any of the R93 stuff. Tactical 2 stuff is much harder to find and no barrels currently are being made for them. There is always tons of R93 stuff available, so I always tell people to look at an UIT, CISM, LRS, or an LRS2 if your considering it for serious use. Downside: no 338 Lapua capability.

      I realize this has nothing to do with your current video but the other ones were quite old and this one is only a week old. I apologize for that. I have never seen someone that has all 3 models and has so much knowledge on the subject. You can’t seem to find this detailed information anywhere on the web. Do you still make the magazines and accessories? I was curious about the magazine and the picatinny scope mount on the tactical 2 barrel? Thanks again I appreciate it.

      @@LTT7965 I no longer make any accessories because there is a Federal law about registering with the DOD. In 2018 it looked as if this law would disappear but it never happened. It's just too much of an expense to go to make so few things for such a small market. Tactical Blasers are basically collectors items now, but I have been working on an R8 tactical project using a GRS stock that accepts tactical 2 style magazines.

      Titanium is a hard material to machine, especially when it has some very specific engineering properties and surface finishes. Depending on the manufacturer, it can either be fairly "gummy" when cut with carbide tools or it can produce a problem where you really have to gouge the surface in order to get an accurate cut. Lapping usually works but I have had to use some pretty heavy grit followed by very fine grit in the past. I would proceed with caution and ask around - especially when they are stock and come from the OEM. If they are aftermarket, then try and talk to whomever made it. I have successfully resurfaced some Titanium valves from a Ducati racing bike years ago, but it was a situation where there was no surface treatment.

    I use these things,and also a serdi 60. my experience doing 3 angle jobs with either is after you lap the seats , your 3 angles have turned into basicly a 45 seat with a radius top and bottom. the compound likes to take the edges off .I like to go back in and just slightly touch up the top and bottom angles afterwards.

      Nice job...but if your using positive interference angles then lapping is damaging the line contact and destroying the concentricity of the seat ...most heads use a one degree difference between the valve and seat...if you are using like angles then it is permissible only for checking...it will not correct a sloppy job... furthermore valves grow at operating temperature..cold preseating is nonsense..read the neway manual...tight guides, concentric seats and valves are all you need..use a seat indicator if you like..or just tap the valve and look for unbroken contact...it's easy ...you will never show full seat width using interference angles ...I worked my whole career in powerplants doing valves as long as your arm...never seat exhaust valves at the same angles...they collect deposits that way....this is the whole truth and nothing but...

    Good effort but not grinding the valves seems like a bad shortcut. Love those Neway cutters, they gave you perfect seats but then you used those seats to grind your valve faces, distorting them in the process. Never seen anyone else do that. A machine shop probably could have ground your valve faces pretty cheap for a perfect job, then finish with the lightest trace of lapping for a perfect fit.

      No I agree, it's impossible to not grind the valves. I use another tool called the Gizmatic to cut the valves. Been meaning to do a video on that process, another "at home" solution.

    Have you ever measured valve seat runout using this kit? I'm interested in picking up one of these kits but was worried about the runout of it. Like you showed you can definitely mitigate it but still curious.

      There should be zero runnout because the arbor is tapered, so there is always zero play. Unfortunately, if your guides are way out, then the seat will never be cut concentrically. Lightly worn or new guides is the only way to insure this.

      as chris said there should be almost 0 runout if you'r guides are in good condition, now the arbor does not truly keep it concentric, what makes this style cutter really easy to get a concentric seat is the 3/4 side carbide, there's always opposing force to each carbide blade so there's no side pressure to cause runout on the seat. stones are the same way. as long as your pilots are not bent you should get almost 0 runout with a stone/carbide setup like this, we use a head machine at work that cuts 3/5/radius all in one cut and dependent on the valve seat material we typically see .0005 to .0015 thou runout due to the single point style cutter without an apposing force

      I taught the user of various machine shop engine restoration tools and measuring equipment. If valve guide is round there won't be any issues, BUT, if you don't have small hole gauges and a micrometer (plus know how to use them) it may be a waste of time and money.
      With practice it's possible to 'feel' 0.0001" out of round with a small hole gauge.
      For general automotive use, there shouldn't be any problems if engine has less than 100,000 miles and even over that if it's OHC with 'bucket valve adjustment as the side thrust is taken by adjuster buckets not valve stems.
      Couple of few years ago I did an 'Instructable' (Instructables.com) on how to correctly measure a two stroke motorcycle cylinder using a cylinder bore gauge and intended to go through some other measuring tools plus how to hand hone a cylinder to exact size (withing 0.0002") but kinda stalled out doing other things

    Asking for a Friend (wink) What about Valve seats? Is there a Cutters for them? Have you had any experience Putting Valve Seats in Pre Unleaded Engines? The Specs needed to keep them in Place. Proper Cutters Tolerances and Seat Materials. Does in make a difference in Seat materials if you using Aluminum Heads or Iron Heads? Of Course I Would think they Tolerances and Cuts may be different also. This would be a Great subject on doing your own. Does Neway or Goodson have Seat Cutters? Thanks

    I’ve used a motorized version with neway seat cutters with Dish detergent and water in a spray bottle for lubricant and to polish my seats to perfection it worked great And smelled nice to… LOL

    When I bought my cutters, the sales person told me to get the 5 cutter instead of the three cutter tool because it is smother cutting, less chatter. I also got a crank handle instead of the tee handle, it too is smoother

    I have a newey kit for small japanese engines, the cutters look identical and they don't need lapping

      Yeah, the lapping is more psychological than anything else. Theoretically there is no need, the sharpness is very important to the ultimate flow numbers. I do always run the tool back across the lapping just to make sure, but if you use very fine lapping compound it's really a toss up.

    this might be a dumb question, but how do you know which size cutter to buy? in other words, does say a 1.75 inch cutter cut from, say 1.25 to 1.8 inch valve seats, or are they specific to the exact size valve your working on? how much variance can i have from one cutter?

      They are not exact, just a range. You typically want to use a cutter that falls in the middle of a range, so if you use a 1.5-2.0" cutter and you are using it on a 1.75" seat then that's ideal. But it's not required, you could use a 2.0" cutter to cut a 2.0" seat, etc. The blades are infinitely adjustable. The variance in each cutter is stated by Neway. Sometimes chamber obstructions (like tight wall angles, etc.) prevent you from using a larger cutter, it's a bit of a trial and error.

    These are handy little cutters but keep in mind that the seat heights will not be the same from cylinder to cylinder. So chamber volume will not be equal on all cylinders as will valve stem heights. All ok for stock engines but not what you want if you chasing horse power

      There is no measurement, the tools have cutters set up for the degrees at the factory. The accuracy of the degree of the seats is based on the accuracy of the valve guide, so you need good trued valve guides to make this method work.

      I have done up to 1 1/2" valves, and it can get more difficult to turn the T handle at larger diameters. But it's possible with some cutting oil and some strength.

      I buy from " Cylinder head supply" in Portland OR. Good prices. Also Goodson stocks these, but at about 10% more. Good to great service from both. CHS does not show the th254(?) Non slotted correction blade, which if used correctly in 60 and 75 deg correction cutters, give very smooth results. I have in the distant past bought from Neway manufacturing, but I don't think they will sell small orders anymore.

      It varies by size. You can either look up the valve diameters and guide diameter and order off of their chart (it's all on their website) or measure it yourself. Then order the corresponding cutter and pilot. You can also give them a call and they will help you out. Their website has all the sizes listed.

    How do you check the depth of cut, how are you ensuring all the valves are at the same heights?

      A difficult question to answer, but I measured in this case from the lip of the valve to the actual head surface. Lotus didn't put a spec out for this. Since the engine uses different shims to achieve contact with the cam, there is only a spec for how far the shims can be out- around .020" of height difference. There are various ways to check height that are a lot more accurate, but it depends on the head design.

    so i just received my new heads from KRE and they have a 5 angle valve job Im thinking of lapping the valves do you think I should? Wont hurt? The reason is Ive heard the manufactured heads dont have the greatest valve seats. There are vids of guys putting liquid in the chamber for leaks etc. But I dont want to f*** anything up.

      I would liquid or vacuum test first to get an idea of the relative condition of the different valve seats. Only the comparison can tell you if there is anything more necessary to achieve a good seal. Machine shops and manufacturers will always BS you and tell you it all seals fine, then you measure and it's all way off, then they say "it will wear in". I'm thinking about doing a sealing video how too next.

I did get aluminum heads, but doing a liquid test, yes need an old plug I threw all mine away . But do you know the grit of the lapping compound your using? about

      @@frekkledipped Yes I have been buying different grits from a person on ebay for years, the pastes can go into the 3000-5000 grit range, maybe beyond. It's difficult to tell where the ultimate threshold of where it becomes optimal. I know the stuff you get at auto parts stores is usually very gritty, around 300-500. You can go to the point of a mirror like finish.

      @@discogodfather22 I ordered 1200grit and the necessary tools to remove springs and valves. I did a water test no pressure and no leaks. Should be pretty safe with that ssoft of a grit, I just dont want f*** something up. Like the valves

    i just went to neway for my intake 1.77 $140 45 degree, the exhaust 2.11 $200 30 degree I think I'll stick to lapping as I would need 6 I guess for two different size valves

      I think you could do that job with CU237 (dual 30 and 45 degree cutter which would cover the 1.77") for $124, CU 660 (dual 30 and 45 degree cutter which would cover the 2.11") for $203, and a single CU296 60 degree cutter would cover both size valves for $74. So a total of $400 which is expensive, but not crazy. Depends on how many jobs you see it doing over the years. Also assuming you need a 30/45/60 degree geometry, sometimes the angles vary by manufacturer.
