- Not going to lie. I'm in love with the Ohma Condenser Microphone. It sounds incredible on V.O. and let me tell you why.

The folks at Ohma are just as amazing as their mics. Such personal care goes into every one. Every piece is hand built and it shows in the way they sound.
Exactly. And everyone there is a super awesome person who really deeply cares about mics and quality and between them, they probably have over 6 decades of experience working with mics. Ohma is an incredible company.
I've just compared this video to one of your U87ai videos and this sounds way more natural. Night and day difference.
Thanks Scott! Just then I thought I had my sonic palette figured out, a new champion emerges.
Oh, damn.
Is that your voice on the perfect power wash commercial ? I could swear that sounds exactly like you.
Yes. I’ve been doing their spots for years. One of the best clients ever. Thank you for noticing.
I was listening to a podcast the other day and I heard a familiar voice doing one of the commercials. It took just a second to recognize Mark's voice. Don't ask me what the commercial was for, but it sounded really good!
That's awesome. I never get tired of hearing people report back that they heard one of my spots. Totally makes my day every time. Thanks!
Very impressive sound, and absolutely gorgeous. I'd be curious to know if you find yourself using this more than the U87 some time in the future. All things considered, and with all the work Ohma have done to make this (custom capsule, custom body, quality transformer) it's quite surprising this mic isn't at least over $1000.
Right? Because they are a boutique brand that does almost all manufacturing in house, including making their own capsules, they can keep the mic at a very competitive price for something this special. I will definitely keep you posted on how much it’s supplanting the 87 on gigs. Could be a significant amount.
Sounding good, a little bit sibilant but I think it can get fixed with a de-esser. Thanks for the review Mark.
You bet
You're a gold mine for mic nerds Mark. Cheers. Do you by any chance know how to access the article pertaining to the Debon Ham capsule (hope I spelled it right)? Whenever I google it, I just get articles about deboning ham. It would be an interesting read for sure.
It’s here. www.sdiy.org/oid/ldc/Debenham-StereoCondenser.pdf
No deboning required.

Guess you could call it a boneless article.
Thank you so much :)
Sounds great. I do VO full time and recently picked up a TLM 107 to have something more "natural" than my U87ai, 416, 103. Any thoughts on Ohma vs 107?
I had the TLM107 years ago for the same reason and stupidly sold it to buy the Chandler TG mic which was a really dumb idea. I really like the 107 a lot, but the Ohma is a very different beast given the capsule and transformer alone, the Ohma is more creamy and lush. The 107 may be more versatile, but what the Ohma does, the 107 can’t.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I was afraid you were going to say that! Well, at least the Ohma won't hurt my wallet nearly as much as a Neumann... thanks!
Yours is the only VO review of the Ohma I can find and I love the way it sounds with your voice. I have a voice that shines on a 416 and in a few emulations on my Sphere (not so much on my U87), so this seems like it might be a great fit for me. However, All of my other mics have shock mounts. Does the Ohma have any vibration isolation. Thanks for the helpful info, Mark
Glad you enjoyed it! I do believe the videos on this channel are the only VO-centric demos of the Ohma so far and after the circuit upgrade a couple of months ago, I doubt they will the only ones for long. At the moment, it appears the best option for a shockmount, and a great one at that, is the Rycote USM.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Thanks... Just pulled the trigger. Can't wait to try it.
@@donmcdonaldcreative Don, do me a favor and please come back and let me know what you think of the Ohma after you've had a chance to really run it through it's paces.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I’d be happy to. Now, can you help me with my microphone addiction. I have way too many.
@@donmcdonaldcreative Dude, that's like asking Pablo Escobar to help you with your Miami snow problem. Truth is, the only cure for a microphone addiction is, ironically,... more mics!
The ohma mic sounds like nothing in the way un-colored
And yet it still has a flattering mojo to it like a hotel room mirror.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff may be useful for movie ADR I don't know but seems so natural like you say
It sounds very good. It's nice and bright and remarkably smooth. Was there any processing added - EQ, compression?
Thanks! No EQ. Very slight 1.5:1 compression with a high threshold set just for when I raise my voice and the MT-48 noise gate.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff DAMN! I am absolutely obsessed with getting an original brass cap 414 EB. Bright but smooth with a full bottom end. I can't believe there's no EQ on this Ohma mic! This is sounding like it belongs with the 414. Bright and smooth and overall full sounding. I think I have to buy one.
Been looking for a new mic recently, mainly for rap vocals, more lofi/old school/indie rap stuff so def looking for smooth and calm rather than super bright and punchy, initially wanted the Soyuz fet 17 but maybe too pricey, do you think the ohma would fit my use scenario? Or do you have any other recommendations, also considered the lewitt pure tube and lauten atlantis
Impossible for me to know. I don’t do music anymore and without first hand knowledge of your voice, rig and room, I don’t know if it will be a fit or not for you. The only way to ever know if any mic works for you is to have it in your space. That all being said, the Ohma is a very smooth and creamy mic, so if that’s what you’re looking for as opposed to something super punchy, it could be a great option.
Yeah. That's insane. I'm in.
In what? A tin can? Because I can’t hear you. OH MY GOD ARE YOU IN THIS CAN??? HEY SOMEONE GET ME A GIANT CAN OPENER!!! Don’t worry little buddy, we’re going to get you out of there… PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! THIS HAIRY LITTLE BOY IS TRAPPED IN A CAN!
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff hahahahaha! Hairy little boy. Hahahaha. Oh man. I haven’t been called that since last night.
Interesting mic, even more interesting company. For VO, my interest diminished when I saw the spec sheet. Self-noise of 17. Oof. Not super for narration, and while I know that's not really the intended market, I was kind of thinking I might snag one, if I could figure out the ungodly number of color combinations! I'll be interested to see what other mic products they might come up with.
I’m wondering if that’s the spec on the old circuit, which was just updated two months ago. Side by side this mic has less self noise than my 87.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Interesting. I love the sound and the review, and the company mission. The specs I saw were downloaded from their site two days ago, so... I dunno. U87 is 12, if I remember? Anyway, thanks for the reply.
@@humongortart Confirmed with Ohma that those are the old specs for the old circuit, not the updated, much quieter circuit.
i just went to the ohma website. "Microphones, jewelry, and other delights crafted in East Los Angeles" Microphones and jewelry... okayyyyy.... YET, damn that mic sounds good.
The jewelry is actually made from what they cut out from making the screens. It’s pretty cool they recycle that material like that.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff even better. dammit now i'm saving my nickels...
Love what you do Absolutely beautiful microphones, And when you go to the website, customization and colors are spectacular… I’m doing some testing with my Heil PR 77D and I’ve been doing comparison with the SM 7B on my discovery I think that Heil sounds better and doesn’t need nearly as much gain… have you ever had the pleasure of working with or reviewing a Heil PR77D?
Back in my early podcasting days, about 20 years ago, my axe was a Heil PR40, which I loved, but I don’t use dynamics anymore.
the Soyuz is better
Love the Soyuz, but often it’s not about what I like best but what is the best fit for the job.
It's got some clarity and heft in the sound that is really nice through my headphones. I can imagine on VO that requires authority and excitement this would be a beast!
What microphone in your arsenal does it compare to in your opinion Mark?
To my ears it's got some C414 clarity but with a little muscularity I associate with a TLM 103(which is not a mic I like but I do like the vocal heft it can capture). For the price these mics seem like a strong product
What I like the most about it is that it’s unlike anything else I have. It’s such a crazy hybrid. Like you suggested, 414 and maybe a 47 FET? Or a 414 from 1k up and a 47 from 1k down? For sure these mics are a deal. If they were a grand, they’d be a deal.
