Designing a Better and More Attractive Microphone Shockmount?

  • That's it. I'm making my own now. The basic mic shockmount looks so... basic. Why can't microphone companies get more creative with their shockmount offerings. Why are shockmounts so ugly? Why do I have to design them for myself?
    Well, at least let me show you what an effective shockmount looks like.

    My biggest pet peeve are shockmounts. Love this Mark.
    I've been complaining about these ugly monstrosities forever. I put a lot of value on aesthetics but also storing those giant pieces of crap is another issue.

    Those new-ish universal shock mounts that look like they're surrounded with purple Joker smiles are the ones that look really ugly to me. But I quite like the look of the Neumann style spiderweb shock mounts. I got a TLM 193 recently and I bought the shockmount for it. It sucks though. For a premium price, it doesn't do a great job rejecting shocks at all. It's also really annoying the way you have to screw it on to the mic. I like AKG's shock mount that comes with the 414. It does a great job rejecting shocks and the way it clamps onto the mic is way easier and quicker than screwing it on. It's also pretty good at fitting different mics. It works great with new 414s, smaller old 414s, this little Milab mic and a chunky EV RE1000.
    But the thing that I'm most interested in is a universal way to mount a pop filter right on to any shock mount or mic. These goosenecks are HORRIBLE. I got this old pop filter from the 80s that works great, but it uses a 5/8 screw adapter. I bought a 5/8 gooseneck and clamp and it's a nightmare getting it to stay in position. I need one of those jointed goosenecks people use for cameras but I can't find one with a 5/8 adapter.

      That’s something that really chaps my britches, so many of those standard shock mounts suck at doing the one thing they’re supposed to do. And the solution to your pop filter issue is to learn not to need one.

    I love your videos and enthusiasm. It’s nice to see someone doing quality videos and enjoying it Despite having minimal viewers comparatively. Sometimes it feels like shouting into the abyss when you compare the view counts so you’re consistent commitment to entertain and educate despite that inspires me

      Thank you. I appreciate the compliment. It’s never about views. I don’t want to be one of those people who is always begging for likes and subscribes. Mic DIY is a very niche audience.

      @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff of course, no one wants to be that person doing it for likes or focused on that aspect of popularity but the fact is it’s hard to overlook and subconsciously we all get pulled into comparison of looking at ourself vs other people, as much as we know it’s not the thing to do. I just restored vintage RCA-CX 55 B -early 1952 CR microphone elements/Cap I bet you find it interesting. I swapped the capacitors to freshies and added shielding because there was none/had a plastic body, grounded at all then added a unbalanced output. It’s a sexy looking but not the prettiest sound wise. Nice Lofi vibes though. The capsule is very similar to the Shure green bullet

    Sweet ideas here. Makes me wonder - why don't we instal little shockmounts on the capsule holders?

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Місяць тому

      Good question. Why not have a 4 way suspension of a capsule within an outer ring? Could also protect the capsule from shock if the mic is dropped?

    The shockmount of the Lauten Audio LS-208 is probably the best looking for end-address mics.

    Love the design. I would argue its not density but absorption. The plastic (PLA or whatever you used) isn't going to transfer vibrations as easily as metal. Especially if you dont use 100% infill on the 3d print. I've noticed this when making a mount for the shure green bullet. Less infill made for less transference, but was also less structurally sound... gotta find that middle road!
    Manufacturers also tend to have the elastics way over tensioned, which doesn't help dissipate vibrations either... its like the very thing that is supposed to suck up all the vibration is so tight it actually HELPS vibrations transfer.
    And I 100% agree that designers are lazy. The idea of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" isn't really a path to innovation. The shock mount for the Austrian Audio mic was interesting, very flat, pancake lookin thing.
    As far as the connector piece goes, I order packs of the fake shure looking mic clips (they come in like packs of 7 or 10 for next to nothing) from amazon. I get em next day and they have a metal insert and 5/8 to 3/8 adapter. Dual screw, easy to remove and they can be tightened up with a pair of flat head screw drivers or if you use a thumb screw with a locking nut on the other side... either way its a steal.

      So absorption or transference would both be functions of Newton's second law of motion: Force = Mass x Acceleration (F=ma), whereas the force of the vibration is affected by the combination of mass and acceleration. Acceleration (or here, oscillation) slows with the presence of more mass. The mass of PLA per cubic inch is almost exactly half of the mass of Aluminum, hence why you need more PLA to increase overall object mass, and I always print anything structural or supportive for a mic with 100 percent infill density to increase durability and help limit vibration. Thanks for the tip where to find those stand mount pieces. Definitely going to check that out.

    No offense but I love the way a Neumann looks in an 8 point shock mount, it is beautiful. Your shock mounts are cool, but my atomic 8 points are timeless. That being said the practicality of them is questionable and to store them is a pain in the ass. I still think you need to open a boutique mic company, your passion is obvious

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Місяць тому

      Right? Storing those Neumann shock mounts just takes up way too much space. Maybe I’ll create a foldable shock mount boutique company. I mean all shock mounts are technically foldable. Most are just not unfoldable. You never know…
