      There's no reason to freak out, this is exactly what he pays his technicians for! Yeah it's an expensive amp but chances are it just needed a new tube and if it's not the tubes maybe a capacitor. It's actually pretty hard to permanently destroy an amp when using it as intended.

      Dude, a pro musician like him has an amp tech. That amp was fixed right after, for sure. Doesn't matter what the amp costs.

    Could you ever do a video going over John’s Dumble history? I feel like he’s used so many different Dumble amps throughout his career (and Dumblators/A Box Later), and I’ve always wondered how many Dumble products he actually owns. Love your channel so much!

      There’s a video on the channel of John’s amp history throughout most of his career up until now, If you haven’t seen that it’s got quite a lot of info on his dumble usage. If you were talking a more specific overview of dumble products in general then that would definitely be a cool video

    Welcome everyone who is here cause of the GuitarWorld post featuring this video. 2 Things: I’m sorry on the pronunciation, I’m Canadian so I’d never heard of that place before in my life! Secondly, pausing and interjecting in the video often is actually an extremely common and proven strategy to avoid copyright strikes and allow the content to be used and shown to you guys. I wouldn't be surprised if the rain had something to do with the amp failure. They stopped the show a couple times to let the storm pass. I believe a lot of the big bands and musicians that use amps on stage always have a backup of everything, usually the guitar tech or the musician have a stomp box that will switch from the primary amp to the backup, but I guess this was one of those freak accidents where nothing seemed wrong with the amp all throughout soundcheck but a damn fuse or tube just gave up

  • @tunelowplayslow5623

    I like the old school approach to this. All of those guys could be playing into axeffects or some digital direct system and 99% of people wouldn't even notice. John plays a strat through a 50 year old tube amp, it blows a tube and the tech just walks out there and replaces the head with another. Grant it these are 150k dumbles but even if it was fender reverbs, he is staying true to the classic sound of the dead and using era correct gear and he doesn't have to.

    A tube or a speaker doesn’t cost as much as the amp. Generally it’s one or the other. If it shuts off completely it’s usually the speaker. Tube problems come on gradually from my experience. At first you might think it’s nothing- they go away and come back. Tubes only cost as much as you want to spend. You can get regular tubes for like 15 bucks each or 1959 tubes for 200.

    This video just gave me an idea :
    As a tech it would be cool to have a small box with a headphone out, or at least a meter, that you could plug inline to very quickly trouble shoot a rig on the fly. For example, if you’re not sure if the pedalboard or amp died, you can quickly plug the output of the pedalboard into the tester to confirm signal is present and clear.
    Just thinking out loud but that sure would be handy for speedy troubleshooting during a live show.

  • @kidwajagstang

    I will say, that even if it made a loud sound out in the audience, it doesn’t mean John experienced anything. Remember, there’s a separate person running monitor world (who would be more aware of what is going on up on stage), while FOH wouldn’t necessarily risk muting something unless they know for sure they have to or what channels are having a problem.

    Often times bands of his status will have two or more crews. One crew will be setting up in the next city while he plays the current venue. Todays venue will pack up and go to the next next city and setup, essentially leapfrogging each other but requiring multiples of many of the things needed for a show. They also have a setup in different countries ready to go to minimize transporting equipment that isn’t possible to get multiples of like favorite guitars, etc. I assume that’s why he has multiple dumbles besides just a backup

    Why in the world would someone hate John's D&C tone? I mean, I'm personally not a huge fan of the Silver Sky, but his Super Eagle tone is fucking incredible and fits the music soooo well. It's every bit as expressive as Jerry's tones back in the day (perhaps even more so at times). What do the tone haters dislike about his tone? What's there not to like about it? Just curious.

    • @zfatbcvxbthsbcv

      I love it, I went on a gear hunt trying to emulate it. Pretty much copying his pedal board though a hand wired deluxe, which a PRS of course.

    • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 Рік тому +1

      @@zfatbcvxbthsbcv I’d say the Super Eagle is probably the biggest factor in getting that tone, and I would LOVE to get my hands on one of them. Maybe someday.
      I actually just got a PRS SE Hollowbody that is an absolutely awesome guitar; every bit as good as my USA made PRS S2 Studio (possibly even better considering how great the pickups pair with those overtones and feedback of a cranked up hollowbody electric guitar, which is something I’ve just now been able to experience). I don’t really try to get Jerry or Mayer tones out of that one (my best Jerry tone comes from my Les Paul using a coil-tapped bridge pickup, which is surprisingly actually really close), but just wanted to mention it in case you were skeptical of the quality of SE models.
      If you do wanna go USA made PRS and you’re looking for something a bit cheaper than a Super Eagle, a Hollowbody II would probably get you pretty close as well. Not exactly the same as a Super Eagle since I’m sure Mayer utilizes that middle pickup in conjunction with the coil taps quite a bit for his tone (Jerry was a big fan of using his middle pickup a lot) as well as the built-in preamp and treble boost, but the Hollowbody II does at least have two humbuckers in normal configuration and coil taps, which is as close as you’ll get to a Super Eagle without dropping $6,000 (though, depending on who you know, you might be able to get your local luthier to install a preamp and treble boost in a Hollowbody II for a fairly good price; certainly better than the price of a Super Eagle). And of course, you could go buy any stock Silver Sky and instantly have Mayer tone, but that’s not my favorite sound of his.
      To me, the Super Eagle is BY FAR a better tone than any strat-style guitar, but if you’re looking for just Mayer tones, that Silver Sky would be the obvious choice. Then after that, any Fender amp with a Klon type pedal along with maybe a “Dumble in a box” pedal like a Zendrive or NuX Steel Singer (which is a budget pedal that sounds absolutely amazing in my personal experience) will get you pretty dang close. And of course you have effects pedals like a Mu-Tron, wah, or phaser that he’ll pull out from time to time. Realistically, you could have a board with just four or five pedals going into a fender style amp and get pretty close to Mayer’s tone in D&C.
      To me, John’s absolute best tone was with his Super Eagle going into his Dumble, but it was also his most expensive rig by a good bit as well lol. But a very similar tone is definitely achievable at a much lower price! I also just love the looks of the Super Eagle. Beautiful guitar that sounds even better.

    • @sinjon

      I actually am not a fan of the D&C tone. In some songs it works but it wears on the ears and just sounds like the same song after a while. It’s very trebly with a certain whine to it if you will. Just not very pleasing to my ears. I’m not a big fan of the Silver Sky pickups

    • @STSGuitar16
      @STSGuitar16 Рік тому +1

      @@sinjon screw the Silver Sky, honestly. Strats don’t work well in that setting, imo. That’s part of the reason I loved his Super Eagle that he played for a few years before the SS came out. It’s always a disappointment to me to turn on some Dead music and just seeing a normal, boring strat copy up onstage during the whole show. They actually made a replica of Garcia’s Wolf guitar that has the seal of approval from Doug Irwin (the man who made all of Jerry’s iconic custom guitars) for John to use on this tour and he has barely touched the thing in favor of a shitty strat copy. It’s not so much that it’s a bad tone on its own, but I just prefer other sounds in this kind of music. Grateful Dead music needs humbuckers, imo.

    You seem well informed, do you have any idea to what amp John is using on the “Last Train Home Ballad Version”. There are three amps. A PRS, a Fender, and a third one under cover... his other guitarist gave Two-Rocks, so I wonder if he’s using old Two-Rick and out it under cover since he doesn’t want to advert for them anymore. Apparently he’s a little pissed they released the Traditional Clean which is pretty much a John Mayer Signature, but not under John’s name and after their deal was over. That’s my guess for why to put a cover... or it’s another PRS John Mayer Signature amp... who knows? If you do, please let me know. Thanks!

    • @JustinJeske
      @JustinJeske  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Phil, I actually have a video on this subject on my channel but I’ll give the quick notes here.
      I think that amp under a cover was possibly a Fractal for Wild Blue. There are several other guitars in a rack we can see that we know for a fact were used to record other tracks, so I think they recorded other songs too that we’ll get released closer to tour. That’s my theory.
      John isn’t actually mad at Two Rock over the Traditional Clean. The Trad Clean is the GrandChild of the Mayer Sig yes, but that amp is an evolution of the Custom Reverb Sig. So it’s still an original Two Rock design at heart they just tweaked beyond the JM Sig. He was mad at them making more John Mayer Signatures than they agreed upon, calling them “Customs” and stuff like that. He has still used Two Rocks since that issue happened, even for the latest live performances on Colbert, etc, he used his old Custom Reverb Sig. I will say the new ownership is doing everything they can to mend that relationship and should have no blame or heat for past mistakes under different ownership.
      Hope that helps my friend!

      So much hype with vintage amps and sound. You can get a good sound with a lot of amps. Some people think that just because something is expensive it must be so much better than something else. I don't buy that when it comes to amps. And guitar players that need to bring more than 2 guitars to a gig are silly. It's just for show really. Maybe if you use a lot of tunings or something, there would be a reason then.

      @@jimi272 Thanks for the reply. Well, sounds like you actually get completely different sounds and so then I can see your point and how it serves you well. Certainly a jazz box with heavy strings will have a much better old jazz sound than a tele or strat. I bet you don't have more than one jazz box when you perform? But I'm talking about people like Mayer that have basically two or three sounds. Why does he need "a guitar shop" full of guitars when he tours? It's for show or just because he can do it. It doesn't make me think that he's any better than a lot of people with one or two guitars. Don't get me wrong, I respect Mayer's talent and musicianship, but all the guitars is for show. If you watch the video of his "Jones Beach back stage tour, part one. At about 2:57 you will see what I'm talking about.

    Having an amp fail during a public performance when the band is counting on you... just blows, but almost all guitarists have a small amp for backup. The only thing worse is having the pedalboard fail, as most guitarists generally do not have a backup pedalboard. But if your pedalboard fails, you can always go directly into the amp; you just will not usually like the sound. All in, just a very uncomfortable moment in a performance that JM managed like the pro he is. Calm and thoughtful, then press on.

      yea this is basic, happens when you tour with tube amps and vintage gear. Why dont they have a redundant set up anyway no matter if its a dumble or not? with this gig that's a given imo instead of having to haul the backup out there mid song. but i dont like his tone on this guitar for this gig anyway, i prefer the HB especially against Bob's strat. even though one of my fav eras of Jerry tone is a strat its more about the balance of tones between them.

    Most Dumbles I have seen are overdrive specials. They are not all different- and the tone is indistinguishable to most ears. Including one I saw previously owned by John and Keith Urban on eBay for 150k. The most recent was 130k. I have never seen one for 200k that’s an exaggeration. You can check eBay right now there is usually at least one. Also check Reverb, it’s like eBay for instruments, amps, pedals, gear, etc. Generally the owners wait so that they aren’t trying to undercut on prices and can charge more- that’s why you see one at a time. This is surprising bc something really hard to find will rarely show up on eBay. The rarity may be as exaggerated as the price! Surprisingly few players have used them too- 3 primary ones being Robben Ford who it was created for, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and JM. They are very low gain and cater to a specific style of blues players. Wouldn’t be of much use to players who use Marshall’s or Mesa Boogies. Generally used by guys who start out with Fenders- blackface vintage especially close.
