My mother was raised in the Orthodox Church, so I heard this kind of music often, and it was always so uplifting and inspiring. A priest had told me that demons hate this and flee when they hear this kind of praise to God and I play it at home and it creates a peaceful, clear environment. Demons also hate loud sudden noises, hence another reason for Church bells
If this and sacred music like this were offered more in Catholic and Anglican Churches, people would be staying and coming back! How do I know this? Because I was once a music director in several churches in my life time, When my choirs offered music like this, MANY people came back and let it be known it was because of this kind of music! I even witnessed adults crying because of hearing music like this.
Your background is very similar to mine. I was a Music Director/Choir Director in Evangelical churches for 20 years, but never seemed to "fit in", because I was classically trained in music. Eventually, I converted to Eastern Orthodoxy (for theological reasons, not musical ones). I have now been Choir Sirector in Orthodox Churches for the last 20 years, and it has been a perfect fit, both theologically and musically.
You have to be careful about your reasons. If the “smells and bells” are all you care about, then you’ve missed in its entirety the whole point of the re-presentation of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Catholic Mass. We’re not there to be entertained as if we’re at a concert. We’re there to confess our sins and receive the Holy Eucharist.
@@firstnamelastname3558 Truth and beauty are not in opposition. You dare to refer to Christian worship as "smells and bells?" Were the Holy Fathers trying to entertain us? Are the twenty-four elders offering incence and the cherubim singing "Holy, Holy, Holy," entertaining? Your reasoning is like that of a Protestant. You should be ashamed. As far as individual people's motivation for attending the Mass, that is between them, the priest, and God.
This music goes straight through the body and fills the heart and soul. There is nothing better than liturgical music to calm and soothe the spirit - no matter which church. I love the Russian depth and harmony, it is so powerful.
This kind of music gives such a different feeling from the contentiousness of the western church; it brings peace and joy, and a deeper dimension of spirituality. I'm thinking strongly of converting to the Orthodox Church, because I feel Christ in this music.
Hi Bill, I’m also someone who, largely through the influence of listening to Orthodox hymns for MANY, MANY HOURS, decided to look into the possibility of converting to the Eastern faith. I had an employee years ago who converted because her boyfriend asked her to as a condition of their marrying. It seemed to work for them; he was a CA. boy and she an immigrant German girl (here to SF). There are several small orthodox congregations around the Bay Area here plus the Mother Church of Russian Orthodoxy for all of CA. is here in SF. I had hoped that by joining an Orthodox community I might be more surrounded with the High-Minded Piety I strongly feel listening to this sort of music. But Alas Maybe it was just the parish I chose to look into, I’ll never know, but I found myself immediately confronted with at least as strong a feeling of Doctrinaire, Strict Hierarchy from among the priests And lay ministers in this particular church that I Literally ran out the front door nearly as fast as I had entered. I Really didn’t like the way they treated the women of the parish as 2nd class citizens; it really reinforced for me how much of a feminist guy I’ve become. That’s One thing. The other thing that Really Turned me off was the Kissing of the Ring Thing. I realized Immediately that I was too much of a Democratically minded American to even Think of kissing some dude’s ring. I could go on, and On. But I can can still Love the music, right ? I feel like we here in the US especially those of us of the Cold War generation still have some Serious Issues to process through as regards the biases and outright hatred we were quietly, surreptitiously “taught” about Russia and The East generally. Oh, and I notice your comment was from 6 months ago. Did you go forward with anything more as re: converting ?
The Lord Jesus Christ is present in the Orthodox church. But, be mindful that the music is an external thing, and one's heart should be transformed because of Christ. Jesus Christ wants your heart (and mine). May the Lord Jesus Christ be continually present in your life!
How does all of this Russian music always sound happy and sad at same time. Like wow those harmony notes always make me think about higher meaning in life like damn this is genius music
Happiness is a rather shallow emotion. As others note here, Joy and Joyful Sorrow are the deepest emotions and are ultimately only of God. Western Christianity for various reasons has, since the enlightenment, lost much of the deep emotional connection between the believer and Deity that is the essence of real worship. Orthodoxy has preserved this connection to a much greater degree. Traditional Russian church music is the strongest evidence of this that I know.
These are composed by great composers, and performed by professional choral musicians in a concert hall. Most Orthodox choirs are small and humble. This is exactly how it should be. The compositions by Rachmaninoff, Bortniansky, Tchaikovsky, etc were offerings to God, but, they are not needed in a local parish.
I was in the Baptist International church in Moscow in 1987.before the opening of the UDSSR. This 50 member (or more) choir sang the most moving russian Choral music I ever heard. Now ive played over 60 different Operas in over 3000 concerts or Opera evenings over the past 40 years. The most memorable were the two Operas Khovanchina and Boris Godanov (from Modest Mussorgsky) .. I believe good substantial music is a part of the praise to God. Today I tried so many churches where only Rock music is. This sort of music has made me leave the pentacostal movement and return to the orthodox. I understand the orthodox reverence to Mary but I only pray to The Father and to Jesus Christ..In HIM ALONE is salvation.... I believe all beautiful music though is also a great gift that Lifts our souls and our eyes from this mundane Problem filled dying world to the heavenly realm where we will be one day.
With the splendor of this music, it would appear that two souls are dead in spirit. This is THE most comprehensive and delightful collection of Russian liturgical music I have yet found in my almost eighty years. Thank you immensely for posting this sonic treasure.
Hello.... forgive my ignorance, but please can you explain the meaning of these words? "it would appear that two souls are dead in spirit" - I am quite baffled!
@@vicjames normally I would have assumed that they were referring to the two people who disliked the video. But since it appears that UA-cam has totally removed the dislike display from all videos, I don't know. Maybe it wasn't true yet when the comment was posted.
@@vicjames I'll try to explain. I can ONLY do this from my understanding. Remember, each person on the planet has different understanding according to the CONTENT of their soul. And each soul, housed in a physical body, has different content. Therefore, in my understanding, as we are all different spiritually, our individual understanding IS different. Not an easy concept.
@@placeholderlastname3418 Mmm.. I understand the concept of Body, Soul & Spirit - no problem. And that we are all individuals still. Facinating of course! Maybe I was looking for a deeper meaning than was meant! However, you introduce another interesting thought; We understand differently (in many ways) but if we are to understand truth, then we can only genuinely believe the same truth. If your truth is different than my truth, then at least one of us is wrong!!! Now there's a thought! 🙂
Truth grows through time. The fruit of this years harvest will be similar to last years, but it will be different, respectively. The time will come for those who hear the knock to be revealed the truth of the logos. The word became flesh. The chanting resonates elevated densities of truth through frequency & vibrations through the arches & angles of the cathedral. That’s why it makes us feel so at ease. It’s brilliant!☦️
Thank you so much for this!! :) I'm currently chanting and learning how to chant. June this year will be 2 years Chrismated for me. :) I can hit the A1 Glory be to God!! I have a long way to go but I'm thankful to serve in Prayer with Ison! :) God Bless you!! In Christ's Grasp Forever, Richard
@@orthodoxrocks9644 Welcome to the faith, brother! Glory to God! I've been Orthodox for 18 years (I'm 66), and haven't looked back. Such a glorious faith, and never-ending depth of God's Grace! By His Grace I am a choir director and chanter, and am so blessed! May God continue to bless you in this New Life, my brother!
No matter whether anyone agrees or not church or choral music , in my opinion, leave a different aura or influence in the mind of any listener. It is the perfect tool to soothe our souls through music. It helps us reflect on our past deeds. Your music has taken me back to my church attending Sundays of nearly four decades back! Choral music was an added boon to children of my age to attend sunday service. As if I have attended church services of more than six hours duration. Thanks.
Choral music is the most beautiful of all music, especially when it is just voices. I don't say that lightly, I took me a while to come to that conclusion. And religious music is generally the best choral music. And yes, for me this is like an essential part of communion with God. I think we should ask worship through song. I think that is the _right_ way, and the way that helps people the most, and builds communion together, and is also enjoyable. It is very uplifting to join together and create a beautiful sound just for that moment. It is bringing something good into the world temporarily, that couldn't exist without cooperation, which fades like smoke and disappears when you are done, but you still know you did it, had the enjoyment, felt your soul being uplifted. The best thing for that is shape note signing because it is exciting and fun, and anyone can do it. You don't need to be a professional singer to do it.
Truly Astounding how little of this Beautiful Music has ever been heard West of the Iron Curtain. We (at least in America) were done Such a great disservice by not having the transcendental choral music of the Eastern Orthodox world shared with us. And I’m guessing this continues right up to the current day, at least in school. Fortunately there’s YT now, which affords those of us with the natural curiosity to explore that which was kept from us years ago the resources to fill in the gaps in our understanding of the Phenomenal Choral Music Tradition of the Eastern Orthodox world. It’s rather embarassing for those of us who have spent Lifetimes in church and professional choirs to be exposed to something SO UNQUESTIONABLY SUPERIOR as this. The degree of refinement in All Aspects of EVERY ONE of the Many Choirs contained herein is ASTONISHING. This PRECISION covers All Aspects of music making; starting Especially with TUNING, but also including the precision of Attack and Release of the pitch, and extending to a MUCH GREATER Dynamic Range. These people put most all Western Choirs TO SHAME, I’m sorry to say (wait, What Western Choirs?? There aren’t Any). Don’t get me wrong; we’re not in a competition, especially in that this is Sacred Music, and as such the Lyric is the point. But as a professional musician I just want to go on record as saying: this music is at a Much Higher Level than we achieve here in the West. And I Really notice it.
The Orthodox church in Russia was decimated by The Comrads, though it did survive. A good amount survived as the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR)
You could do as I did- "Come Home To Orthodoxy" My great grandfather was an Orthodox priest (they must marry unless they are monks). The family here drifted away from any spirituality- my Dad was an educated scientist- I was given a Christian name and that was about it. When I felt something was missing spiritually I did a search of various Christian churches here in the States. The music had a lot to do with it- so eventually, I "Came home to Orthodoxy". 😂 suck it, Rome! Hail Theotokos! God Bless the USA!
When you claim that there aren't any Western choirs, you speak with the tongue of a fool. There are many choirs in the States and in Britain. King's College is just one of many.
Oui on peut aimer un lieu voire sacré pour le silence et la musique qui nous prend l'âme et le coeur, ici elle est merveilleuse, c'est comme lorsque nous entrons dans une église et que l'orgue joue c'est magique ..
Regarding the single dislike, that says more about the person than the beautiful music. Sad when people can find nothing better to do than waste their time trolling. Or perhaps the poor person thinks he or she has something against God. Such people need our prayers.
Too many commercial breaks. No bueno... Still, beautiful beyond words... I have a connection to the Orthodox Church thru my father, and to Presbyterianism thru my Mom- it's an ornery mix, I tell ya!

THANKYOU!!!!!
Yours is a true gift to all of us. Thank you so much !❤
My mother was raised in the Orthodox Church, so I heard this kind of music often, and it was always so uplifting and inspiring. A priest had told me that demons hate this and flee when they hear this kind of praise to God and I play it at home and it creates a peaceful, clear environment. Demons also hate loud sudden noises, hence another reason for Church bells
I love it! Demons flee from this kind of music.
As a Devout Catholic of the Roman Rite i Agree
You have to be careful about your reasons. If the “smells and bells” are all you care about, then you’ve missed in its entirety the whole point of the re-presentation of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Catholic Mass. We’re not there to be entertained as if we’re at a concert. We’re there to confess our sins and receive the Holy Eucharist.
@@firstnamelastname3558 well one thing is desiring a beautiful mass other is actually going to mass only because its beautiful
Слушаю этот плейлист для концентрации, во время работы. Помогает испытывать больший эмоциональный отклик от того, что делаешь
But Alas
Maybe it was just the parish I chose to look into, I’ll never know, but I found myself immediately confronted with at least as strong a feeling of Doctrinaire, Strict Hierarchy from among the priests And lay ministers in this particular church that I Literally ran out the front door nearly as fast as I had entered.
Orthodoxy is full of joyful sorrow. The music is no exception.
@@St.MartinofToursPrayToGodForUs life is also full of joyful sorrow
Happiness is a rather shallow emotion. As others note here, Joy and Joyful Sorrow are the deepest emotions and are ultimately only of God.
Western Christianity for various reasons has, since the enlightenment, lost much of the deep emotional connection between the believer and Deity that is the essence of real worship. Orthodoxy has preserved this connection to a much greater degree. Traditional Russian church music is the strongest evidence of this that I know.
If this type of music would have been played at the church I went when I was a child I might have stayed longer
Go to orthodox church.
@@christopherhogan691 amen
So your commitment is determined on whether or not you are entertained?
The Eastern Orthodox Churches have always had the most beautiful music!
This music hits deep in the soul, one cannot imagine what those Angelic Choir's in Heaven most of sounded like. . .
Thank you for this masterpiece mix!
Hello from Saint-Petersburg!
Diese Choralmusik ist wunderschön und mit"Hingabe"gesungen, eine wahre Freude, das Zuhören.
With the splendor of this music, it would appear that two souls are dead in spirit. This is THE most
comprehensive and delightful collection of Russian liturgical music I have yet found in my almost
eighty years.

Thanks.
I hope this beautiful music moves you to go back to church every Sunday.
Thank you, Russian Orthodoxy, for letting a weary heart rest here. 🙏
An incredibly beautiful religious and musical tradition. Thanks!
Merci à Brilliant Classic pour ce merveilleux cadeau 🙏🏽🕊🦂🐖🐈💐🇫🇷
This is already my favourite video on UA-cam
Its pretty great. Powerful, imagine in person...I've been within the church im an orthodox, it will take your soul into a higher place.
