    I’ve done a few videos on collecting and collector habits for physical media.
    It’s time I showed you guys what sort of things I’ve been keeping hold of as I sort through to clear some things out.
    It now feels like I’ve been hoarding. I want to dive into what has accumulated and possibly what can go.
    Unearthed DVDs / Blu Ray / Books / Comics / Retro Games among other bits & bobs.
    Do you collect in a similar way or collect similar things ? What’s your main addiction with collecting ?
    Anyone tempted to clear out similar items but just stuck in old routines and never finding time to properly sort ?
    Fire off in the comments… let’s discuss our habits.

      The artwork is my only reason for keeping these. Frames or other options for the artwork so they can be on display has gotta be considered at some point soon. I can’t keep these hidden.

      They do hold a lot of nostalgia for me… and also need a good sort through. I’ll possibly keep hold of them for a good while longer while they’re in a box and not strewn all over the place.

    Everything seems pretty tidy really aside from the dvd attic boxes. Do be careful when getting rid of dvds even cause some are now very hard to find! I would say with the comics just list em, ebay people will bid if it is worth $. After my dad passed we had 50 coast artily journal magazines. I could only find one issue prev sold for 14.00 so we just put the lot up for 50.00. It sold for around 800.00 ! 2 bidders just went nuts.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 місяців тому +1

      Wow, that’s impressive bidding. I think eBay seems the logical place for the comics to do their thing.
      I’ll be sorting through the DVDs this week. Clear that down and then onto the Blu ray that are on the floor or for eBay. There’s a couple I’ve already taken from the pile to clear out (Brain Dead / Bad Taste and Near Dark) - hoping to replace onto a better format eventually but just waiting on the right release.
      Already been eyeing up a different unit for the top of the stairs to house things a little better.
      Need a place for everything and for everything to be in its place !

    8:00 I did the same thing by collecting about seven or eight David Attenborough documentary DVDs that came free via redemption from a Saturday newspaper. I got them all about six or seven years ago, but I still haven't watched one of them.

      When you think about it, it’s a little bonkers isn’t it ! Newspapers we didn’t want for things that we didn’t need.
      I probably still do it to some extent now. Not in the same way but there’s still times I’ll buy something for the exclusive item that’s given away with a purchase… or a slipcover or whatever else.
      One thing that is clear though. We’re not alone, plenty of us out there that do the same or similar.

      I’m starting to recognise my reasons for collecting / accumulating so much. Doing these videos is helping with the process but in honesty… I think the hoarding does go back to previous personal challenges. Collecting things gave me something I felt like I could control. I was in charge of that aspect of my life at the time. From there I think it escalated to the more addict like behaviours.
      I’m managing to cut down my collection now, it’s a process that I’m working through but feeling better for it.

      @@retrofun41 I had a couple of discs from the US That came on the cover of a magazine. Think it was called Total Movie. Think they went more with the idea of having a magazine on a disc so jammed it with featurettes / trailers and interviews. Loved them !
      Couldn’t pin point an exact year when I started collecting. Don’t think it was ever sort of a conscious decision as such.
      I know I had VHS on a shelf and thought how cool it would be to fill the shelf with my favourite movies. Then the shelf became more shelves… then we moved onto laserdisc… then it was dvd. And when dvd hit I was also old enough for a credit card. So spending on imports for early releases then became the thing… and the collecting / hoarding / accumulating just became kinda a problem.
      I was probably mid teens when I started. It was important for me to have physical of stuff that was hardly shown on tv. Couldn’t go without repeat views of Lethal Weapon or Point Break.

    Last year I finished collecting all of the Elvis Presley movies, and the only reasonably-priced version of his first movie "Loving You" I could find on ebay was a Daily Mail give away version (package is copyrighted 2002). So now it's in a regular dvd case, with a plain custom label, on a shelf here in the great state of Oregon. It's a region 2 disc, so I have to use the VLC media player on computer to watch it, but I think it's interesting to get a few movies from unique sources/situations. The return address says it came from a place called Totnes, Devon, UK.

    I still have my old VHS tapes at my parents. Lots of precerts and post certs. I do have a couple of working vhs players (also at my parents) I do wonder why and I think it’s mainly nostalgia. Will I ever watch them? Probably not. It might just be a case of owning a part of history, holding on to a part of my life. I still buy books and always buy first edition Stephen Kings and books I read to my children.
    Would I say I was a hoarder? Maybe in a very small way. I see folks in groups buying 20 to 30 DVD’s and Blu-ray’s a week from charity shops and CEX and I think, how on earth will you ever watch those when a week later you are repeating the same thing. I generally think they are buying for collecting sake and not for viewing pleasure.

    A great collection of boxes. I never moved on to bluray. My cd, dvd and game collections more or less froze around 2012ish when I decided I was running out of space, although that's not as bad as it sounds. Places such as price charting will keep an eye of what others sell identical or similar items for. With comics and action figures, there may be better alternatives or dedicated forums for advice.
    I suppose it'll be the anniversary comics, issues where a character is first introduced, and earliest comics of all that people will consider holding on to. Anything sealed for videogames may be worth a reasonable amount too, but given past trends of third party reboxing and grading, that jump in value is artificial. Nevertheless, games such as paper mario 64 even unsealed sometimes still go for over a hundred squid in good condition.
    If there is ever a push for the end of physical media after bluray (likely) or there is ever a mass internet blackout... then alot of what is out there physically could jump in worth. I suspect a lot of tv shows on vhs never made it to dvd, alot on dvd never made it to bluray, and digital platforms often cut or censor old material. Despite that, separating what I can live without to reduce my own collection however, does tend to be movies the most.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 місяців тому

      I think you kinda hit the nail on the head with the ‘what you can live without’
      A couple of times in recent years I worked away from home for 4 months at a time, I lived without it all and it didn’t really bother me. I think that’s kinda what spurred me on to considering if I really needed all the ‘stuff’
      I’ve been floating around ebay for the comics. Couple of them are listed and seem to be worth an ok amount. Might chance some eBay listings.
      I think the important thing for me at the moment is to take the collection down to just the movies and ‘stuff’ that I really care about or can see myself using again. If something hasn’t been used for a number of years then it really should go.
      Since stopping collecting… have you missed it in anyway or felt you’re missing out ?

    • @MrVidification
      @MrVidification 6 місяців тому +1

      I'd give it a go. Those spidey 1985 comics are on the bay for around 20 and up individually. Most people seem to split their comic collections. I have a few of the larger graphic novels I'd likely keep, as they are worthy of the occasional re-read. I'd like to say that side of things never got out of hand, but that's only if you ignore any gifted comic annuals and magazines stashed away..
      It's been a while since I had any forever expanding collections at the rate they once were, so I don't miss collecting. Looking back, I guess it wasn't helped with the ease of obtaining online. At the time, I might have thought something was worthy of collecting, and looking back I'll sometimes now question why. Having said that, I'll likely end up keeping much of my music collection as backups for digital. As long as I don't start accumulating a ridiculously large number of pc storage drives in any back up attempt..
      I do have a lot of unwatched movies, but nothing is still sealed. So my aim there is to watch everything at least once, and then decide what to get rid of. The problem in trying to get rid of dvds is that you can find so many popular movies for pennies used or in charity stores, and the quality on televisions today for dvd isn't exactly great, so may be worth only getting rid of as a batch. Some harder to find import korean japanese action and horror flicks I may be more successful in getting rid of individually, or in just keeping.
      I'm not keen on obtaining any media to keep through digital only platforms in which I have no control over the content, despite the space saving potential, so having a reasonably sized organised physical collection is not such a bad thing.
      With games, I have everything from a sinclair to the wii. I'd be surprised if any cassettes from the former still work. Most of all that is stored away in a few of those reallyuseful boxes you show, and a few wham boxes, which keeps all that out of the road for now. Some console titles are still sealed, which should be the easiest to get rid of. With the latter system, I gave up collecting around that time, and playing anything for the most part too, unless for brief periods of boredom on the pc.@@PhillwithadoubleL

      @@MrVidification I think the comics will be heading for the bay, been concentrating on these DVDs for the first part. You’re right though, when checking through. Most are worth pennies to trade. When checking through I’ve also seen how easily obtainable they are should I suddenly change my mind on a title and want it back in the collection (which I doubt will happen).
      It sounds like you have a solid retro game collection going on. Do you display any of them or is it mostly stored away ?
      I’m getting my things curated down and back down to a reasonable level. If I don’t feel a personal connection and it hasn’t been used in a couple of years then, right now. I’m not feeling the need to keep hold of it.
      Yes the digital copies / streaming aren’t safe from tinkering or removal but sometimes for some titles, it doesn’t really matter ‘that much. If it’s something I care about then I’ll get the physical to avoid that issue but a majority. It doesn’t really matter to me anymore.

    • @MrVidification
      @MrVidification 6 місяців тому +1

      The worst part with digital is surely not being able to re-sell. No doubt seen as a good thing from a company perspective. Paying more than what you would for dvd for convenience and nothing to show, didn't help when digital movies to own first appeared either. Netflix and similar I do have, but I just treat them as the throwaway rental services they are, although I tend to use them less often than I used to.
      Aside from rare comics, the laser disks and vinyl may be the most collectable items you have, given larger physical artwork is often sought after. Framing the laser discs is surely a good idea given you've found a practical use and saved yourself from having to find anything else to take up that wall space. It usually looks great in the right place.
      The only items on shelves I have are dvds and cds for the most part, with some less organised pc software. I may add a few shelves, given too many stackable boxes for the rest don't look that good, but most of that is hidden away anyway. The later items with games and movies became a habit of collecting, the rest just naturally built up with the reluctance or not getting around to throwing things out.
      I suppose anyone wanting a physical collection of discs of any kind for both display and use, may need to also consider a spare backup player for the future too.

      @@MrVidification the convenience for digital works well for me. I’m a little more fussy about prices with digital and will often wait for their prices to drop (which the regularly do on iTunes) or just drop to renting on the digital service.
      The resell aspect at the moment doesn’t worry me too much. I’m pulling back to only buying what I actually care about and want on the collection. Most of what I have is worthless for resale to be honest so I don’t think too much about potential resale.
      The comics I’ll be looking at listing and attempting to sell. Retro consoles likely traded in. The laserdiscs however. They will be framed and used as artwork. I love the look of them.
      The way things are going I think back up players may need to be considered. Things seem to be moving further and further from physical. Even gaming, they’ll sell the physical copies but they’re so reliant now on several big downloads to actually play the game. Makes the digital purchase just seem more straight forward. Steering consumers away from the physical disc step by step.

    Yeah, you start nearing (or getting past 40) and you don’t really need to have all this stuff around anymore. I am into my retro gaming and do have a collection (though it’s curated) DVDs I make a point of only keeping if they never got a blu ray release / cost a fortune on blu ray - I was just watching Angels with Dirty faces on DVD the other day because the Blu Ray is like £30 from Amazon US - it’ll get a 4K at some stage I’m sure. I’ve never been big into comics and so don’t have any of that stuff, but what I do have which needs to get scaled down are a bunch of the old Prima gaming strategy guides - why I hang on to them I don’t know - in a lot of cases I don’t currently have the game / beat it years ago and never went back. Some of them are worth a good £100 on eBay too - true I’d only buy 4Ks with the spare cash but I’d get more use out of it.

      And I agree, 40+ and you start to see things a little differently. I wondering if it was some sort of mid life crisis 😂
      I think it dawned on me when I worked away for around 4 months. I continued ordering things as I normally would… when I got home I was faced with a silly amount of packages. I’d loved so long without the collection. Now I faced a pile of stuff… it started me considering if I really did NEED any of it.

      Absolutely.
      A bunch more heading off to CEX on Thursday. A bunch more being listed for eBay. Starting to make sense of the space now.

      @@PhillwithadoubleL I did the same, and only kept a few that I'm upgrading to 4K worthy of a rewatch, but happy keeping a couple series like Columbo cigar box set on DVD. Gave most to family & friends as charity don't want them, and CEX, well, good bargains to be bought, but err, highway robbery selling... 😅

    If the items are not on ebay, it actually means they are rare.....and can make a bit

      I might chance listing them. Put them on at a low auction price and see what happens.
      It feels good to be clearing a bunch already.
