It's real Strange too see the Snob reviewing The Exorcist after he reviewed Exorcist 2 many Years ago.
@@entertainmentpowerfuchs5744Too bad that unlike The Exorcist 1973 and The Exorcist III 1990 that Exorcist II The Heretic 1977 is a horrible Movie which is much more badly written comedy than being absolutely terrifying.
I'm sorry the what?
@@bleakautomaton4808 The Exorcist II sucks but The Exorcist and The Exorcist III are great and terrifying Movies and I liked both prequels and The TV show so I hope that The New Movie will be really good too. The Second Prequel came out in 2005 so it has been a very long time since The Exorcist has had any Movies I don't know why.
I'm willing to bet you have but I figured I'd say it anyway. Did you know/see the Rifftrax version of 'Rats' ??
I thought it was great and as far as I know. The first Bruno Matei film they've done.
I keep hoping for 'Hell of the living Dead, or Night of the Zombies, whichever is longer!
Take care and Cheers
from Canada. A lot of Snob fans up here!! :)
I've always said the reason this film works so well is because everyone treats it like its a real situation.
Nobody immediately jumps to the assumption that Regan is possesed. Her mom does everything that a real mother would do in this situation, doctors, hospitals, therapists, psychologists, etc. So when she begs Father Karras about an exorcism, it comes as a last resort.
But even then, Karras doesnt wanna do it because he doesnt think she's actually possessed and needs medical help instead. That's what makes this film so smart to me at least
And the Merrin shows up and is like, "Yup. You've got a goddamn demon on your hands."
@@gathenhielm9977😂
Standing ovation sir!
@@gathenhielm9977Merrin knew in Iraq he would confront Pazuzu again. As you said, "Yep..Showtime."
One thing I think that gets overlooked is that the movie isn't really about Regan's possession but rather Father Karass' struggle with faith.
Exactly
That is one of the biggest themes in Blatty's trilogy of books he wrote for this series. The Exorcist is about proving the existence of evil, The Ninth Configuration is about themes of redemption and proving that good still exists in the world to a degree, and Exorcist 3 Legion is about the battle between good and evil.
Indeed. It's way more deeper than people give it credit for. When I tell people I highly rank it and find it inspiring they look at me like i'm crazy but Father K's arc is one of the best I've ever seen told. He endures a living emotional hell the entire movie only to give everything up to save the life of that girl, and he looked a demon in the face and wasn't scared of it. One of the more heroic moments in a movie.
@@efan2012
A girl he never met at that! He only knew possessed Regan, he never knew her as a normal person. That makes his sacrfice even more impactful.
Right simply because so many people really don't know what the word "exorcist" means. That's not a shot at people it's just a fact. 🤷
When my uncle was courting my aunt, he took her to see this movie in theater. Halfway through, she stood up and demanded he take her home.
The movie obviously worked then!
@@jooei2810😂😂😂😂😂 I think "lick me!" sealed the deal.
@@kazzymoviefanthat was probably the moment 🤣
I did that to my date during Twilight.
I absolutely love the fact that you said "courting" and no one asked what that means! Finally a channel not saturated with Gen X'ers who have no clue what is going on or what there talking about in the first place most times!
Nothing says horror classic like starting with an upbeat 80s montage. Happy Halloween, Cinema Snob.
This is a 1970s movie though.
I've been dealing with a flu and a new Cinema Snob video is the cure I need
AND ITS THE ORIGINAL EXORCIST?!?! Hallelujah!!!
This is one of your best Snob!
The original 1973 is perfect in every aspect: editing, sound design, cinematography, acting, direction, etc…. Friedkin’s film is a masterpiece. I am not a fan of the later releases, which I think ruin the perfectly paced structure of ‘73, has an opening shot in G-Town that undermines the later fade from Iraq with the sound of fighting dogs to MacNeil house and the Casablanca-lite ending undermines the dread of the film’s atmosphere and even if it was Blatty’s preferred ending (and fits into his two directorial efforts) Friedkin’s ambiguity in 1973 allows the audience to contemplate what they just went through and dwell on the questions of faith, evil, and redemption for themselves. Original ‘Friedkin’ is the best. RIP Billy.
Disagree. The 2000 release was perfectly paced, and the theater exploded in terror, followed by relieved laughter and applause at the re-inserted special effects sequences. They loved it. It was excellent, and it's the version we watch every Halloween to this day.
I prefer the '73 theatrical release over the "extended cut".
I was at the Powell book store in Portland talking with Bill Blatty's oldest son, Micheal - and the 2000 version came up. He too preferred the original release over the extended cut. He even told Friedkin that. Lol
The stupid flashes of the guy in clown white make up - like in the kitchen - are supposed to be scary?
They look like an idiot's attempt to add jump scares to it.
@@jeremysmetana8583Original cut is far superior. The spider crawl is too soon in the film, the flashes of Pazuzu are absurd and the new ending us corny.
With Brad having a baby, I can't help but think this is another "children's" film in review.
I just want to take the time to thank Friedkin for his body of work. Its really hard to pick the best one from his library but i have always had a soft spot for the Sorcerer. The first three exorcist features makes for a weird compilation as they all are great in their own ways.
I've never heard anyone refer to Exorcist II: The Heretic as "great." Lol.
Let's see him slap Mia Goth before a scene....
Could he direct without abusing actors?
@@robotrix Shut up.
The second exorcist was bad to the point of being unwatchable.
I remember seeing this for the first time, it was when Warner Brothers had just released the 20th anniversary edition VHS the one where they put the backwards stair walking scene back into the movie. My 9 y.o. self was not ready.
Legit the scariest scene in the movie, that freaked me out when I first saw it too!
The GOAT. I'll never type that again ahem. They showed it so many times during late nights at the local cinema, me and some friends would go to watch the reactions. Fun times. This new one will be the comedy of the year, mark my words.
You sir, were correct.
I did read the book, and that was intense enough that I knew I likely shouldn't watch the movie. I appreciate the folks who do the analysis!
The book was scary as heck!
I saw the movie when I was 7. The other three boys at my sleepover were too scared to finish it. I thought it was dumb as hell. Fast forward to 2012, and 21yo me is unsettled by the book. Re-watched the movie to see if it was actually better than I remembered or if I missed something. Nope. Still sucks.
One of my all time favorite movies! I remember reading the novel, and my sister asked me if I was okay, because the color was completely drained from my face and my hands were shaking
"I've seen 'The Exorcist' about a hundred and sixty-seven times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I've seen it."
Whoopdee Laa!! so it doesn't scare you. I think that says more about a limited stunted imagination and maturity than anything else.
Not to mention the fact that you're talking to a dead girl!
No. Just stop.
Great review as always. I remember my parents watching this at the drive in and being in the back seat. Always good to grow up with this sort of thing rattling around in your head. Maybe that is what's wrong with me..
My kid and I have a theory that the new Exorcist movie is actual a sequel to Repossessed. The reason is that the devil kid in the new movie refers to Regan being in danger again, and the only movie she really got repossessed in was, well, Repossessed. We're hoping that in the movie's finale (shown in detail in the trailer because this is modern day, and you can't have a trailer without showing the whole movie) a CGI Leslie Neilsen will save both kids. It might wind up being like the ending to the new Ghostbusters.
I guarantee that would be better than what we actually get, haha
Linda Blair was Nancy in Repossessed not Regan
No shit, so 3 1/2 mins in. You showed the beginning music, and I said to myself, "I remember when I rented this and was so confused that I took the VHS out of the VCR to double check I had the right movie." ...then you called me on it. You're freaking me out, Brad!
It’s a testament to how well made it is that, even though I don’t find it scary personally…it is a captivating film
I was there for this poor woman trying to get help for her daughter.
One could say it never gets old…..testament ;)
You a big boy not getting scared you deserve a medal
@@briandenapoli3250I didn’t see it until I was a high schooler and the combination of having seen a lot of parodies beforehand and my own skepticism about demonic possession had me not really getting startled by it.
I enjoy it more as a drama about self doubt and redemption with Karras.
@@robotrixkarras has a powerful arc in it too
Weird! I just searched yesterday to see if you ever reviewed this one, after watching your Exorcist 2 review. I'm excited for this
Wow! I remember back when he reviewed The Heretic. Cool to see him cover the original
I've seen many parodies and references to The Exorcist, but I've never actually seen the movie. All I know about the movie is that iconic shot and the theme music that goes along with it.
I remember the first time I saw this as a kid, I was so entranced with it and couldn't stop watching it, while it terrified my mother.
I remember when "The Version You've Never Seen" came out in '99 and there was banter about that modern audiences laughed at the scary parts. I know films like Exorcist and Halloween can become so ingrained in the pop culture zietgeist that people are too familiar with them and it lessens the impact of the movie. STILL, man this is one helluva film. It's like JAWS. Even if the shark just swam out to see I'm fully invested in following our three main guys on the boat. In Alien, even if the xenomorph never shows up I want to see what's up with this crew for 90 minutes. And Exorcist. Even if Regan is faking, I want to see what happens with Father Karris and his crisis of faith and cut over to see what Father Marin is up to for two hours. The shark, the alien and the demon are just icing on the cake.
I felt like the whole "walk down the stairs" bit that was added back in just didn't cut it and kind of detracted from the atmosphere.
In terms of timing it also felt a bit out of place, as if I recall correctly, there hadn't been much major possessed action before that.
(it's been years since I watched it so my memory may be fuzzy)
@@HeadacheCentral In the context as a whole, the spider walk is way out of place. I didn't have any issues with the pacing, but yeah that spider walk doesn't hold up under scrutiny.
I saw “repossessed” when I was 11 years old, I’m 34 now, damn!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The "bust you up", "go for it" dubbing slayed me. Great job.
Beyond horror, it's one of the best movies ever made.
Absolutely. Top 10..15 at the least.
This is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time! The book is fantastic as well!
Exorcist 2 is one of the worst sequels ever made. Part 3 is very good though.
@@makaveli4205 I agree with you on that. Three was fantastic!
What I found fascinating in the novel (and was not touched in the movie) was the demon's attack on Father Karras's sexuality. It was relentless, and I thought the demon's assessment was spot-on. The demon was also relentless on Karl, the butler, because he was a survivor of the Holocaust. The movie is a classic and deserved more awards than it got.
Yea!!! I'm actually surprised it's taken this long for you to cover this movie. This is gonna be good!
My thoughts exactly!
That was before he was "The Cinema Cheerleader"
Seeing an intro sequence to this actually caused me to wonder if this was an old episode that Brad uploaded again.
It's a fantastic film it really is. As far as sequels go, Exorcist 3. And that's it. 🤣
Can't remember if I ever saw this when I was a kid. But I do remember my first time properly watching The Exorcist was when my big sis bought the extended version and we sat down to watch it in the mid 2000s. It was creepy and I enjoyed the way it was shot.
The Powers of the Snob compels you!
Those bastards want to take down your "Little Red Riding Hood and the Monsters" review!? Don't you let them, Brad! That review is hilarious! And I wish you did more foreign children's fantasy cinema. That stuff is made for Snob reviews.
I am Loving This New Opening You have Snob, You Bring the Classic Era of VHS to Nostalgia Glory!!😃👍📼
Do you know the name of the song or what the video is from, I can't find it anywhere
Love the show brad keep it goin love to watch your snarky reactions to movies.
This movie is absolutely scary. And the book is also scary.
I find the book scarier as we get more time with the demon.
Hey Snob, I live in DC. The house is like a dozen yards away from the stairs. There's a whole yard there. There's no way in hell you can jump from the window to the stairs.
When I was a boy in the 80s I still remember the commercial when it would be shown on tv. I was alone and was so freaked out to go down the hallway. Scared what was behind the doors! Even just the commercial scared me!
You could have waited until the day after Christmas for a 50th anniversary celebration. 12-26-73 🎉😅😮 RIP William Friedkin 🙏😢 Max Von Sydow and Jason Miller too. 😢🙏🙏
Aw man, now you gotta do repossessed! (I don’t care what anyone says, I still love it)
I'm so glad you remembered Repossessed exists. I know it's a silly movie, but it somehow became a comfort for me. It also has a lot of some of my first exposure to gay humor, and nicely didn't resort to nasty epithets, which was different from a LOT of its contemporaries. Linda Blair did comedy well in it. The elevator bit near the beginning always makes me laugh. She's an underappreciated actor, I think.
It's kind of funny, I can take or leave The Exorcist, but I am very fond of Repossessed. It also introduced me to the truly magnificent work of musical art, "Pump Up The Jam", which has seen greater appreciation in recent years. Good.
A month shy of my 40th birthday and I still have yet to see any but bits and pieces from "the exorcist". Not being raised a catholic or evangelical Christian I've just never found anything to do with demons or ghosts interesting enough to catch my attention. I still vividly remember how incredibly let down I was a teen when it turned out the creatures from event horizon were just hellspawn. I think it has to do with the fact I'm not worried in the slightest about my eternal soul since I wasn't raised to believe I had one. I do appreciate seeing how catholic iconography was seen in the popular zeitgeist of the time and what has changed since then and what has stayed the same and hearing about it from a lapsed catholic is very informative.
You HAVE to review the original Toxic Avenger, being that the reboot's gonna come out soon!
Hope you go ahead and do Excorcist 3. I find that to be a better movie, and has the best earned jump scare in cinematic history
It's a cartoon compared to the original.
@@ThouSwell-zx3fd i think you have your sequels confused
@@garyhall7867 Don't get me wrong. Exorcist 2 made Exorcist 3 look like Citizen Kane lol. And I did enjoy the 3rd installment, but I found it more of a formulaic, mainstream horror movie.. which explains it's popularity with the masses.
You're right about the jump scare. It got my heart racing. But the movie drags a bit. And the original is so much more shocking and scary.
My mother took us kids. She had survived Theresienstadt, Majdanek, and Auschwitz, and was the only person in the cinema not horrified. She kept making loud comments "Feh, she v*mits! To v*mit you need full stomach, STARVING is de worst hell. Feh, she v*mits. Gotteynu, how much she had to eat! Look how much comes out! Dis iz shtupit" She also told us "Dis is not scary. SS men are scary. Dis is silly buvveh maiseh (fairy tale)" Needless to say, the time I've seen this since I giggled all the way through it. THIS IS NOT A DISS OF THE MOVIE... my mum was NOT a person you wanted to watch horror films with - she'd LIVED one and could outdo anything shown onscreen LOL
How not seen the review yet but I wanna say I love the new opening for the show.
I really did miss the “believe it or not” opening from the old days but this new one “I’m watching my video” I think it’s a solid replacement.
Truth
Still a stone-cold classic, fifty years later. Great job, Brad!
Damnit, now I want Exorcist: The Clubber Lang cut!
It's not just a great horror film. It's among the best films, period. What did Friedkin say about the success of the film? To paraphrase, that at its heart it isn't really a horror film, it's a film about love. People understand that on a basic level, and the authenticity of its approach to this, is what's missing in any of these schlock exorcism movies of the past twenty years. It's why none of them work.
Falling in love with your channel. This review was hilarious. The rocky parts really got me 😂
thank you for finally reviewing The Exorcist
The third Exorcist movie, with Brad Dourif and Jason Miller was the best and creepiest!
I can see a Beyond the Door review in your near future 😊
I remember the first time I saw The Exorcist back in 2010. It was just after midnight, I had noise cancelling headphones and I was watching on my laptop in bed. I couldn't get away from any of it. It was one of the most enjoyable and bumpy viewings of any movie I have ever had.
Ah yes, we are now into a brand new cinema snob with intro sequence era.
Sound mix of the film is just amazing!
And if you’ve never seen the Fear Of God Exorcist documentary, it’s really cool
ABSOLUTELY!!
The sound effect won an OSCAR (as did the screenplay) and "FEAR OF GOD" is a fantastic documentary!!
And it keeps getting funnier every time I see it
A laugh riot for the ages
Lol..not to mention we're talking to a dead guy
Nice f******* tree
No lie, some time back my local theatre ran The Exorcist during Halloween. It was actually pretty good on a big screen. But there was one scene that had us all rolling in the aisles, mostly because it dated the movie SO MUCH. When Chris is in the hospital talking to the doctor, and the doctor oh so nonchalantly lights up a cigarette and smokes it right freaking there! I mean, I was born in 1970, and remember when there was no such thing as a non smoking section, but damn. XD
@@Kmskinner83you mean nice fucking model dont be afraid to swear religous american woman who just say retarded words like my goossh heck holy cow those words sound so bad.
The Classic Horror film that I'm still too scared to watch it. I will check it out soon.
I never saw this until the theatrical re-release in 2000. Maybe it's the ego of thinking I'm still cool, but this one holds up.
Repossessed is an awesome movie. I'd love to see it covered
I love I can come back to this channel after 2 years and still the same snob I know and love
Has to be in the running for the best channel intro. I find myself singing it at random times throughout my day
Hey Brad first time watching you in like 10 years glad to see you finally bought a new camera.
I think youtube unsubscribed me from your channel and I just forgot to watch you one day but hey at least I have a massive backlog to watch.
Pazuzu was actually a kind of guardian spirit in the ancient Near-East. He wasn't evil, just scary-looking.
* Regarding Karras. Warner Brothers may have considered Nicholson but Friedkin didn't. He wanted more of an unknown for the part. They originally signed Stacy Keach until Miller proved to Friedkin that he'd be a better choice.
"Sh*tting tomato bisque" is the biggest laugh Cinema Snob ever got out of me.
You know, I've seen this movie about 167 times and it keeps gettin' funnier EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT! (did... did I do it right?)
RIP William Freidkin
Honestly, I paid extra to see this on the big screen... WORTH IT! Even though I saw it a lot as a kid, I wasn't born when the movie was out so I never saw it on the big screen. I'm so happy that I did, also I realized what I super fan I am of this movie every time I smacked my girl's leg when I wanted to squee but couldn't. lol This is by far my favorite horror movie.
Enjoyed the Nebraska reference! Excellent review as always!
The Dee Snider-Capt Howdy reference is *magnifico*!
If I recall correctly, the Captain Howdy faces were originally makeup tests with Eileen Dietz (Blair's stunt double). That makeup was the original design for the last scenes of possessed Reagan.
Like that font. It fits the intro perfect. Glad you went back to it
"...The better Exorcist II" is indeed the SNL parody with Richard Pryor. LOL 😆
You're right! Excellent make up work on Max Von Sydow. I was amazed to have seen him in Shutter Island, wondering how a man who was in his 70's, in The Exorcist could still be alive, let alone, making movies.
I just screamed when I saw that spider walk! OY!
Appreciate the throwback to classic cinema snob openings
The "SPIDER WALK" down the stairs in the Director's Cut is CREEPY!!
One of the only times that the movie and the book match up almost perfectly. Enjoyed both immensely.
That old ass copyright strike for Red Riding Hood is loke me getting a post removed from facebook for a five year old post
Still my favourite film of all-time which kick started my love of horror movies. I watch it every year.
Another gem. 💎

One of the funniest comedies ever made as it was so silly. Just couldn't stop laughing at the hilarity.
Lloyd's song at the end of The Shining episode had me rolling on floor...i've seen it 5 times already...really wish there was a full 5 minute version...
Exorcist 3 is amazing and I will die to defend it. Can't wait for the review!!!
It's kind of a cartoon compared to the original.
Every time I watch a movie from around this time, it takes a while to get the "Everyone looks like they haven't showered in a week" thought out of my head.
This movie ranked at #3:in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo, cool review as always Snob, take care
This and the original Japanese Ringu are tied for the two scariest movies I've ever seen. Hereditary is a close second.
I usually just watch horror movies for fun, but those three really make it feel like there's an evil presence in the room with me.
Considering how Max von Sydow ended up aging over the years, Dick Smith got it pretty close.
By far one of the best horror/scariest movies ever made I recently rewatched this movie after years of not seeing this since I was a kid. It is a truly an amazing movie I also watch part 3 as well it is good too the 2nd one is a ok but NOPE LOL AWESOME VID Sir
How have we not gotten a modern satirical version of Werewolf of Washington
Saw this in the drive-in when I was 12 in 1974. Kept looking around outside.
This is definitely a great movie, but I hate the scene of Regan getting operated on. Needle scenes in movies always make me physically uncomfortable. Hopefully nothing like that is in the new ones.
Found you today November 4 2023, and ive already watched 3 of them.
Started reading this recently and can definitely attest to how well this was adapted for film.
The 1970s was such an interesting time for horror. And a lot of that has to do with the sense of innocence there still was in society in the 70s and how horror as we would recognize it today was in its infancy. Films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Exorcist tame compared to todays standards but one film being perceived as the goriest film ever and the other being such an intense experience for moviegoers back then people genuinely thought that Linda Blair was possessed by the devil.
Last house on the left, Texas chainsaw massacre and Halloween came out in the 70s
@@makaveli4205 I’m aware and did mention Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But I wanted to spotlight certain 70s horror films that really messed moviegoers up because of how gritty or how real it felt to them back then. That sort of feeling is gone today because of how used to it people are compared to how they were when these films came out in the 70s.
I'd disagree with the assertion that the 70s were a more innocent time for film. 70s movies often have a lot of excesses that are relatively uncommon today. In terms of violence, sexuality, etc... I'm 25 and a lot of 70s thrillers have made me uncomfortable due to sudden, straight shot violent scenes that include elements of degradation and deliberate cruelty (as in how the characters were acting). And I like 70s movies!
A lot of protagonists in 70s action and thrillers come across as very cold, even a little unhinged. Not necessarily a bad thing but "innocent" isn't a word I'd use to describe those films.
70s horror also had extreme films like Last House on the Left and Cannibal Holocaust. A byproduct of a generation watching real war footage from Vietnam, to some extent.
So...is it wrong to say the Exorcist has been kinda ruined for me because it's been referenced and parodied so many times?
Exorcist 3 on the other hand is an underrated gem.
I really like exorcist 3, but it's one of those movies that got interfered with by the studio. It's still great. Brad Dourif is amazing, so is George c Scott. That movie got sampled so much in the 90s that watching it is almost like listening to an Industrial mix tape.
@@AliceBowieI seen exorcist 3 in the movie theater. It scared the crap out of me still does.
The commentary was absolutely hilarious in this 😂
BEYOND THE DOOR ! :D Love that movie
But of course The Exoricst is good to, beyond the door has that cool scene where the demon in the mom makes three versions of her ! That was so woah when i saw it
31:21 Burt and Pearl have gone full Monty Python... Oh, the horror!
Dick Smith was such a fantastic makeup artist - Max Von Sydow does look like an old man. He also did the Mohawk for "Taxi Driver" and the aging of David Bowie's character in "The Hunger".
