I have the exact same problem with a year end 2008 Edge. When you turn it off open a door then close it. This seems to totally shut down the system allowing you to do more of a "cold reboot". This almost always fixes the problems. We're livin' on the Edge.
OMG! Iwas having the same exact problem with my 07 Ford that I have had for 4 months only! I had my baby in the car and was so freaked out. I thanked God that I arrivednear my home and was able to park. I've since stayed away from the car like it was the plague.
These are electronic issues (any intermittent issue check grounds and replace sensors) Have the 2 transmission sensors replaced. 1 is a turbo sensor (speedo and other) 2nd sensor is a pressure sensor for gear change and shifting.
Replace the tss( turbine speed sensor) and oss ( output speed sensor)... 2007 edge...part number.. dy-1221 and dy-1241 In the transmission and problem will be gone.
That is TSS and OSS sensor failure easy to replace if you got any mechanical ability at all it's very easy you got to remove the airbox some bolts you get inside of the the transmission you got to drain the fluid out, I have a 2008 Edge 211000 MI it has skipped a couple times but nothing major I'm prepared to put the sensors in myself you can go online to MacTFordEdge
Exact same problem in my 2008 Ford Edge with 115K miles. For me, it seems to be triggered by hard acceleration (like passing a truck on the highway!). I have just been avoiding hard acceleration.This is a serious safety issue and ought to be reported to the NHTSB.

I have had identical issues with my 2007 Ford Edge. I have taken it into the dealership 6-7 times and have been told the problem was related to one problem or another, but the problem remained. I have spent a lot of money to try to ensure that I have a reliable vehicle, but after seeing this video and others posted here, I see this is a common problem that I am sure they are aware of. Each time I took it in the staff at the dealership act as though it is not a serious problem and do not understand why I keep bringing it in.
We have a 2007 Ford Edge.........same problem as the video. We were all set to take it to the Ford dealer to get it fixed. Our mechanic suggested we unhook the battery for a couple of minutes. He said it was like rebooting your computer and this might clear the problem up. I did it and it worked. We haven't had a problem for a week and a half so far.
I live in York PA we have a 2008 ford edge its in the shop today for a gasket issue leaking oil it was stuttering and wouldn't go over 40 mph and check engine light was flashing so with warranty car max is fixing it and it has 115,000 miles

It only takes a minute and hopefully we save others from the headache and dangers we have endured with this problem. Hi Ryan. I am having the same issues. It just started tonight. I was, thankfully, right around the corner from my house when all of the same problems in the video happened. I am going to contact the mechanic in the morning but will be happy to also contact the Highway Traffic Safety Admin as well. I have searched online and to date there are no recalls for this problem. Very scary.....
Same problem with my 2008 Edge!! Also having a battery issue where something is draining every battery I put in it. Have to have a jump to get it started every day. And now sometimes while driving down the road it just shuts off and goes dead for no reason . Really scary especially when on the highway and car just dies and everything goes black. Definitely A DEATH TRAP AND NOT SAFE!
Check the battery posts. I was having the same problem and the terminals were not making good contact because the post was a different shape. I got a shim kit and reconnected the terminals and problem resolved
My fiancés 2007 Edge is having this problem as well. It is the TSS and OSS sensor. Ford is saying that because she is just a few months outside of warranty and her VIN isn't in the original recall that she is basically SOL... I highly recommend doing as Ryan requested and filing a complaint.. I am. Ford and I are not finished with each other on this matter. It is a life threatening problem as you all know and it should not be ignored. It is an all too common problem for them to not make it right for customer service as well as customer safety... They better pray to God that she and her three year old little boy aren't injured before we can get it fixed...
Its your 2 trans sensors. I belive ford calls them, the turbine sensor and the trans speed sensor. Swapped these out in my awd edge a year ago and has never done it again since.
have they recalled this yet? my sister and brother and law are having this exact same problem with there car. EXACTLY the same problems as in the video. We also noticed smoke coming out from under the car. They just got a recall notice on their passenger airbag and egnition switch.

I've had the same transmission issues with my 2010 Edge over the last two yrs. I've had issues since the first week I had it. EVERYTHING seems to be ELECTRONIC issues! from the gauges not working (fuel, speedometer and odometer) radio turning on and off randomly a few times it wouldn't turn off even when the key was removed! volume going up and down on it's own. I'm on my THIRD BATTERY in 4 years! transmission issues with gears not engaging as they should. constantly blowing tail signal lights 4 already. just one thing after another and the ford dealership here doesn't seem to give two $h!ts about finding or fixing the problems. same excuse every time i bring it in. " we were unable to duplicate the problem in our testing". the only thing not electric is my alignment issue which was also since i first got the car. it pulls to the right within 2-4 seconds of letting the wheel go. All of these EDGES NEED TO BE RECALLED...FORD SUCKS!!!
My 2008 Edge had transmission intermittent issues. I convinced my dealer to change both as they were not expensive, "problem solved". Be insistent, it is your safety and others on the road.
That sounds like you're in limp mode it's a very annoying thing that Ford and Chevy have and some other car manufacturers do when something the computer says is not right it throws it into a safe mode until you get it fixed to me personally it's more dangerous than to drive it with the current problem you might be having with the motor
We've got the same issue with our 2007 Ford Edge. Is Ford going to wait until people die from this causing an accident before they recall it?????? Ford knows damn well about the issue (TSB 07-3-11). Just like others mentioned, it is issues with the OSS and TSS transmission sensors for the 07 and 08 models.
+sinus shephard: According to all that I've read, it fixed the issue for others. I had a blessing in disguise a few weeks back when my wife hit a deer with our Ford Edge and totalled it. I won't have to deal with the transmission issue anymore;)

how do we get the to recall it.so many people have the same complaint. I have been on the hwy driving 60 mph and this happens. I am terrified that my son who drives or I will get into a serious accident. If we all band together with complaints to ford maybe wee can get them to recall it
Replace OSS and TSS. Ford should have had a recall on those sensors. Same exact thing happened to my 2008 Mercury Sable. All Ford vehicles with the transmission 6f50 the output speed sensor and the turbine speed sensor malfunction. Just got my car back today cost me $623. They don't have to remove the transmission but there is a lot of parts that need to be taken off in order to get to the sensors.
Thanks for sharing. What every happened with your Edge? This is what mine has been doing for 5 years: I bought my 2007 Ford Edge SEL in 2010. After just a couple of months, my Edge started going crazy. While driving, all of my instrument panel lights came on (low tire pressure, air bag off, check engine, etc...). I could tell that the motor sounded different and when I slowed down at a stop light and tried to take off again, I had to put the gas pedal to the floor to get it to move. Once I made it up to about 35-40 mpg, I could let off the gas pedal some and it didn't seem like it was in a bind any more. But, if I lowered my speed, it would do it again. When I put it in park, it jerked really hard and made a loud boom sound. This is the funny part: I could shut it off and start it back up and it would be fine. It did this for about 3 to 4 years. About a year ago or so, just shutting it off wouldn't fix it. My husband had the idea to detach the battery cable and when we re-attached it, it was fine. So, we think it's a computer glitch but we aren't sure. It might do this once every couple of months or a couple of times a week. I want to get this fixed, but I just hate to take it in to a shop and spend $1,000 to $2,000 and it still not fix it. Does anyone have any ideas or the same situation with your Edge?
I have the EXACT SAME issue with my 2008 Ford Edge and it been happening about 5 years. I took it to Ford and they said they could not find the issue. We began disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. kBut this is dangerous. One of us can be killed due to this. I am trying to figure out how we can get Ford to recall this issue. do you haveany idea who to escalate the complaints to? I am desperate now because my son is driving the car and will be off to college soon and I do not want this happening
if no one has found the issue here it is! the drive shaft input and output sensors are defective and will geek out. a temp fix for it is to just drive the vehicle with the o/d off (button on the side of the shifter). also changing the tranny fluid and filter might also be a fix? in my 08 edge limited (135k mi at the time) the ptu (power transfer unit) when out. they are about $800 on ebay and it can be done yourself if you have the tools and mechanical ability to drop a transmission. it was making a bunch of small popping noise and eventually one of the gears in there blew up and locked the vehicle in place. another defect in these vehicles... i raised my car up on a highlift and began disassembling. dropped the exhaust, cats, ect. while i was unbolting the ptu i was thinking about how the hot exhaust runs right next to the ptu.. long story short the unit is suppose to be a non serviceable item with only a fill plug. the exhaust heats up the gear oil/ grease in the unit causing it to boil and become useless and heating the gears. i cracked the case on the old ptu and it looked like metallic chunked tar with the same consistency. smelled horribly burnt and the gear teeth were in a million pieces. i replaced the unit and fluid and have not have a problem with the car since hence the question above for the fluid and filter change as a fix. it now has 155k mi and running strong. in the new ptu i drilled and tapped a hole so that i could replace the fluid. there are youtube instructions i followed by another user.

I know this is from 2013, but your engine it's giving all it's got, by that i mean that THERE IS power from your engine, just no torque from you transmission because as you said you're probably stuck in 4th or 5th gear. Does Low mode works when this happens? "L"

Hi there i am having the same problem when i shift it into reverse, i have not gotten to the point where you are and that is the speedometer not going up or the warning lights on.... all it does s the same loud clanking noise when i put it on reverse, a way i have found to get rid of it is to put it in reverse and accelerate a little as soon as i shift it and it engages smoothly, however, when i am parked in a tight spot i can't accelerate as the car might engage and accelerate causing me to crash ( this is another problem as i have seen other videos were people complain about putting the car on Drive and then accelerating with no results and out of the blue the car engages and it launches it self ), i am afraid the transition might be starting to go bad... i just purchased this 2010 ford edge... is there a fix for it before it goes worst?

I have the exact same problem. Took it to the dealer the first time and they said they did not know what it was unless the screen showed the message. Who do we take this complaint to and have this resolved? I just got off a highway and if this happened then, I could have been killed with people passing me at 80 mph. I just bought an 08 edge a year and a half ago and I had to have it towed today because of this issue it happened 2 months ago and they replaced a sensor what did you do?
These problems happened to a friend of mine, borrowed my scanner and run the scanner live, after a week problem showed up again, find out was a output shaft speed sensor. the vehicle has three speed sensors two outside easy to replace and one inside the engine the two outside cost around $65.00 hope it helps
I am having the same problem with my Edge. I replaced the whole electrical system and motor. It never resolved anything. I bought this car new and took such good care of it. Any suggestions, I am very nervous driving this car now.
I got rid of this vehicle 2 years ago, but when I placed this video on youtube, and sent it to my dealer, they chose to fix it that time. The vehicle gets stuck in 5th gear because of faulty speed sensors in the transmission. Sorry you replaced all that other stuff, but it has nothing to do with this problem. They used speed sensors from a newer model, at the time, and it fixed my problem completely. I never had an issue with it again. Fortunately for me, I had sued Ford and won under the Lemon Law, and the dealer had to fix mine for free.
I have 2008. Had a lot of transmission repairs and problem continued. Eventually had new computer put in. No problems since. Still concerned the problems will happen again and have someone plow into me after loosing power. Bought a gauge to give me codes and sometimes use it while driving in case it happens. VERY scary!
I have a 2007 Lincoln MKX. All books cross reference with the Ford Edge. I am also having the same problem. The scanner refers to the OSS. I have purchased the part and was hoping to change it myself. After reading this, it sounds like just a band-aid. What I am wondering is if their has been a recall??? Reasons being I cannot find exactly where the part is located on the vehicle. I bought the service manual $30.00 doesn't help much at all, Trying to get info is like pulling teeth. The dealership of-course offers no assistance. If anyone could help I certainly could use some guidance. I am a carpenter, I do wood, I can use my hands. I can do the work with a little guidance.
Wtf this just happened to me, while transporting a Ford Edge I think 2007, I was doing 65mph then kicked it down to pass and it went no where, then it just died. It started ok when I picked it up, drove ok to get gas, then parked it and left it running went into store came back out and was not running and barely turned over. After getting back on the road the above happened, only this time no start and jumping it did not help left it in a parking lot. But after reading about problems and watching videos like this one, I think I should have pushed it into a field, then I should have burned it. Now most likely I will have to go back and get it a second time.
Disconnect the NEGATIVE cable from battery terminal to reset the computer. DO NOT REPLACE SENSORS! Its a software bug caused by the sensors and can only be fixed by updating the software.
Thanks for posting this. I have a 2007 and I have had the same issue. This started at around 75,000 Miles And we have had the dealerships say the same thing, that they can't do anything without getting a code. My guess is its a sensor that has gone out or dirty , that is telling the engine its in a different gear that it is. (Its most likely telling the engine its in 5th gear instead of 1st). What did you do to fix this?
sensor AA52*7H103*B , SENSOR AA5Z*7M101*B, ARE BEING CHANGED OUT THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE 2008 EDGE. THEY HAD TO DRAIN THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND CHANGE THE FILTER. IT IS EXPENSIVE.
does anyone have issues with this only happening in stop & go traffic. that's the only time I've gotten my car to do it. ford keeps telling me it's my engine learning my driving habits, not buying that claim.
Happened to me yesterday in slow and go traffic on the interstate. Pulled over safely and turned it off and back on, was fine then. Drove it probably 20 miles in town, then in stop and go traffic it did it again. Drove 145 miles on interstate and had no problems. Dont know what the future holds.
Not firing on all 6 new plugs and or new coils each cylinder has its own coil. One of the lights is tire pressure so put some air in your tires. The other is traction control push your traction control button or it maybe a wheel bearing edge has them in the hubs.
Same problem on my edge 2008 what i do its turn off turn on step in the gas and when the car picks up speed we engage and the lights gone and like new till we do it again and again! Ford knows the problem but they been having so many recalls on truck and suv they pretend they don’t know...
+james hoskins It's a well known problem. Happened to me a couple of times after a re-start. Would shut off engine and wait a few seconds, and then it would go away. Last time, it happened while I was driving... not a good thing when negotiating traffic. I got code P0720. I ended up ordering my parts AA5Z7M101B and AA5Z7H103B in order to replace them myself (speed sensor & transmission tunnel sensor). Procedure is pretty straightforward (drain fluid / open side of transmission / replace sensors). Will probably post a video when done for MKX/Edge owners' benefit... There's no way in hell I'm taking my car to the stealership for this...!

The exclamation in the middle IS the tire pressure monitor system!! It’s not 2 different faults

How do we check if our VIN is on the original Recall? was there an original recall? which one?

The engine controller (computer) is in limp mode due to sensor or wire issue. That's why you have no power because transmission is in fourth gear.

I think it's just with ford because so far that is the only company I've seen with transmission issues.
check the output shaft speed sensor, the turbine speed sensor and the transmission range sensor
That sounds like you're in limp mode it's a very annoying thing that Ford and Chevy have and some other car manufacturers do when something the computer says is not right it throws it into a safe mode until you get it fixed to me personally it's more dangerous than to drive it with the current problem you might be having with the motor

We've got the same issue with our 2007 Ford Edge. Is Ford going to wait until people die from this causing an accident before they recall it?????? Ford knows damn well about the issue (TSB 07-3-11). Just like others mentioned, it is issues with the OSS and TSS transmission sensors for the 07 and 08 models.

how do we get the to recall it.so many people have the same complaint. I have been on the hwy driving 60 mph and this happens. I am terrified that my son who drives or I will get into a serious accident. If we all band together with complaints to ford maybe wee can get them to recall it

Replace OSS and TSS. Ford should have had a recall on those sensors. Same exact thing happened to my 2008 Mercury Sable. All Ford vehicles with the transmission 6f50 the output speed sensor and the turbine speed sensor malfunction. Just got my car back today cost me $623. They don't have to remove the transmission but there is a lot of parts that need to be taken off in order to get to the sensors.

I bought my 2007 Ford Edge SEL in 2010. After just a couple of months, my Edge started going crazy. While driving, all of my instrument panel lights came on (low tire pressure, air bag off, check engine, etc...). I could tell that the motor sounded different and when I slowed down at a stop light and tried to take off again, I had to put the gas pedal to the floor to get it to move. Once I made it up to about 35-40 mpg, I could let off the gas pedal some and it didn't seem like it was in a bind any more. But, if I lowered my speed, it would do it again. When I put it in park, it jerked really hard and made a loud boom sound. This is the funny part: I could shut it off and start it back up and it would be fine. It did this for about 3 to 4 years. About a year ago or so, just shutting it off wouldn't fix it. My husband had the idea to detach the battery cable and when we re-attached it, it was fine. So, we think it's a computer glitch but we aren't sure. It might do this once every couple of months or a couple of times a week. I want to get this fixed, but I just hate to take it in to a shop and spend $1,000 to $2,000 and it still not fix it. Does anyone have any ideas or the same situation with your Edge?

I have the EXACT SAME issue with my 2008 Ford Edge and it been happening about 5 years. I took it to Ford and they said they could not find the issue. We began disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. kBut this is dangerous. One of us can be killed due to this. I am trying to figure out how we can get Ford to recall this issue. do you haveany idea who to escalate the complaints to? I am desperate now because my son is driving the car and will be off to college soon and I do not want this happening
if no one has found the issue here it is! the drive shaft input and output sensors are defective and will geek out. a temp fix for it is to just drive the vehicle with the o/d off (button on the side of the shifter). also changing the tranny fluid and filter might also be a fix? in my 08 edge limited (135k mi at the time) the ptu (power transfer unit) when out. they are about $800 on ebay and it can be done yourself if you have the tools and mechanical ability to drop a transmission. it was making a bunch of small popping noise and eventually one of the gears in there blew up and locked the vehicle in place. another defect in these vehicles... i raised my car up on a highlift and began disassembling. dropped the exhaust, cats, ect. while i was unbolting the ptu i was thinking about how the hot exhaust runs right next to the ptu.. long story short the unit is suppose to be a non serviceable item with only a fill plug. the exhaust heats up the gear oil/ grease in the unit causing it to boil and become useless and heating the gears. i cracked the case on the old ptu and it looked like metallic chunked tar with the same consistency. smelled horribly burnt and the gear teeth were in a million pieces. i replaced the unit and fluid and have not have a problem with the car since hence the question above for the fluid and filter change as a fix. it now has 155k mi and running strong. in the new ptu i drilled and tapped a hole so that i could replace the fluid. there are youtube instructions i followed by another user.

I know this is from 2013, but your engine it's giving all it's got, by that i mean that THERE IS power from your engine, just no torque from you transmission because as you said you're probably stuck in 4th or 5th gear. Does Low mode works when this happens? "L"

Hi there i am having the same problem when i shift it into reverse, i have not gotten to the point where you are and that is the speedometer not going up or the warning lights on.... all it does s the same loud clanking noise when i put it on reverse, a way i have found to get rid of it is to put it in reverse and accelerate a little as soon as i shift it and it engages smoothly, however, when i am parked in a tight spot i can't accelerate as the car might engage and accelerate causing me to crash ( this is another problem as i have seen other videos were people complain about putting the car on Drive and then accelerating with no results and out of the blue the car engages and it launches it self ), i am afraid the transition might be starting to go bad... i just purchased this 2010 ford edge... is there a fix for it before it goes worst?

I have the exact same problem. Took it to the dealer the first time and they said they did not know what it was unless the screen showed the message. Who do we take this complaint to and have this resolved? I just got off a highway and if this happened then, I could have been killed with people passing me at 80 mph. Please respond and let me know what you did to get resolved.

These problems happened to a friend of mine, borrowed my scanner and run the scanner live, after a week problem showed up again, find out was a output shaft speed sensor.
the vehicle has three speed sensors two outside easy to replace and one inside the engine the two outside cost around $65.00

I am having the same problem with my Edge. I replaced the whole electrical system and motor. It never resolved anything. I bought this car new and took such good care of it. Any suggestions, I am very nervous driving this car now.
I got rid of this vehicle 2 years ago, but when I placed this video on youtube, and sent it to my dealer, they chose to fix it that time. The vehicle gets stuck in 5th gear because of faulty speed sensors in the transmission. Sorry you replaced all that other stuff, but it has nothing to do with this problem. They used speed sensors from a newer model, at the time, and it fixed my problem completely. I never had an issue with it again. Fortunately for me, I had sued Ford and won under the Lemon Law, and the dealer had to fix mine for free.

I have 2008. Had a lot of transmission repairs and problem continued. Eventually had new computer put in. No problems since. Still concerned the problems will happen again and have someone plow into me after loosing power. Bought a gauge to give me codes and sometimes use it while driving in case it happens. VERY scary!
I have a 2007 Lincoln MKX. All books cross reference with the Ford Edge. I am also having the same problem. The scanner refers to the OSS. I have purchased the part and was hoping to change it myself. After reading this, it sounds like just a band-aid. What I am wondering is if their has been a recall??? Reasons being I cannot find exactly where the part is located on the vehicle. I bought the service manual $30.00 doesn't help much at all, Trying to get info is like pulling teeth. The dealership of-course offers no assistance. If anyone could help I certainly could use some guidance. I am a carpenter, I do wood, I can use my hands. I can do the work with a little guidance.
Wtf this just happened to me, while transporting a Ford Edge I think 2007, I was doing 65mph then kicked it down to pass and it went no where, then it just died. It started ok when I picked it up, drove ok to get gas, then parked it and left it running went into store came back out and was not running and barely turned over. After getting back on the road the above happened, only this time no start and jumping it did not help left it in a parking lot. But after reading about problems and watching videos like this one, I think I should have pushed it into a field, then I should have burned it. Now most likely I will have to go back and get it a second time.
Disconnect the NEGATIVE cable from battery terminal to reset the computer. DO NOT REPLACE SENSORS! Its a software bug caused by the sensors and can only be fixed by updating the software.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 2007 and I have had the same issue. This started at around 75,000 Miles And we have had the dealerships say the same thing, that they can't do anything without getting a code. My guess is its a sensor that has gone out or dirty , that is telling the engine its in a different gear that it is. (Its most likely telling the engine its in 5th gear instead of 1st). What did you do to fix this?
sensor AA52*7H103*B , SENSOR AA5Z*7M101*B, ARE BEING CHANGED OUT THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE 2008 EDGE. THEY HAD TO DRAIN THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND CHANGE THE FILTER. IT IS EXPENSIVE.

Happened to me yesterday in slow and go traffic on the interstate. Pulled over safely and turned it off and back on, was fine then. Drove it probably 20 miles in town, then in stop and go traffic it did it again. Drove 145 miles on interstate and had no problems. Dont know what the future holds.

Not firing on all 6 new plugs and or new coils each cylinder has its own coil. One of the lights is tire pressure so put some air in your tires. The other is traction control push your traction control button or it maybe a wheel bearing edge has them in the hubs.

+james hoskins It's a well known problem. Happened to me a couple of times after a re-start. Would shut off engine and wait a few seconds, and then it would go away.
Last time, it happened while I was driving... not a good thing when negotiating traffic. I got code P0720.
I ended up ordering my parts AA5Z7M101B and AA5Z7H103B in order to replace them myself (speed sensor & transmission tunnel sensor).
Procedure is pretty straightforward (drain fluid / open side of transmission / replace sensors).
Will probably post a video when done for MKX/Edge owners' benefit...
