Tons of songs from Presence could be on here!! Achilles Last Stand, For Your Life, Nobody's Fault but Mine, Candy Store Rock, & Tea for One! Great video as always!
Fantastic overview and analysis of some of the best riffs of 76. I really like your breakdowns of Led Boots and Stargazer...you showed some tricks that Beck & Blackmore did that eluded me til today! Another great riff to add to the list.....Tommy Bolin's Post Toastee!
The 70's in general was my favorite period for music... Everyone back then had their own identity.. I totally got into the Tom Scholz / Kerry Livgren portion of this video... Interestingly enough Tom Scholz unbeknownst to most is a native of Toledo , Ohio. I remember when I was starting out in 76 on guitar... I was 11 years old... I remember hearing Boston for the first time on my dads stereo.. I was just literally blown away by the guitar sound... I was like "Holy F~~~" What is making that hot ferocious sound! It was a Marshall.. An LP fitted with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the rear and a p90 in the neck.. And Toms bag of tricks... Then Kerry Livgren... That incredible Marshall Amp sound...Still probably my over all fave guitar sound.. The body, The tone... The incredible head room. It's what I've kind of strived for.. Carry on to me epitomizes what a Marshall should sound like. At least in my mind. Again... You nailed this!... Keep'em comin'! ♥
Presence, Wired, and Rocks all have mutiple songs you could add to your list. Hard to pick just one or two. Good choices. We play half these songs in our band. Great work.
Awesome list! So stoked about the inclusion of "Led Boots"! Wired and Blow by Blow are 2 of my favorite guitar albums. Here are a few more suggestions for a part 2: "Live for the Music" Bad Company; "Gimme Back My Bullets" Lynyrd Skynyrd; "Calling Dr. Love," "Detroit Rock City" & "God of Thunder" Kiss; "Jailbreak" Thin Lizzy; "T.N.T." AC/DC; "Go to Hell" and "Guilty" Alice Cooper; "American Girl" Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers; "It's Only Love" ZZ Top; "The Temples of Syrinx" Rush"' and "Back Street Kids" & "All Moving Parts (Stand Still)" Black Sabbath ... very underrated album, imo.
Playing the Beck material is the most daunting task! I loved that material when I was young. It seemed other-worldly as a player. That’s because it is!!!!! Btw…that’s a great list!! I think American Girl was a 1977 release. I’ll double check the others as well. Peace!
Thank you! This episode gave me a chance to show more technical range given the artists. It was a daunting challenge, but I was very proud of the result!! Thanks for appreciating my playing!
Hey Carl, Another awesome video. I'm learning so much from you. Keep it coming. Grand Boulevard is very cool. I picked up plenty of LZ influence, and ACDC 🙂. 1973 was another fabulous year. Here's a few of my favourites. Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh, Wishing Well - Free, Gimme Three Steps - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rat Bat Blue - Deep Purple, Caroline - Status Quo, Radar Love - Golden Earring, Money - Pink Floyd, take your pick off Billion Dollar Babies, We're an American Band - Grand Funk Railroad, Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer, Cradle Rock - Rory Gallagher.
That nuanced flamenco strum on Tie Your Mother Down was the penny dropped moment for me. Profound ! As soon as you showed that I was straight on it to nail it, thanks again Carl
Geez, what a trip down memory lane! I was a senior in High School in '76. Listened to Casey Kasem's top 40 rundown many Sundays. Heard so many of these on the radio and have a few in my collection. Thanks for this video.
Great list! Played a number of those songs myself back in '76. "Wired" was a FANTASTIC album and Buck Dharma is one of the most unjustifiably underrated players. Now a plug for my all-time favorite player; more Peter Frampton please Mr. Baldassarre! Cheers, MB
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic That he does! His playing was and is, at least in my opinion (for what that's worth) unlike any of his contemporaries. I purchased Humble Pie's "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore" album when it was released in '71. It was his playing on that album that made me want to play guitar. With all due respect to the other great live albums that are out there, including "Frampton Comes Alive", it's still my all-time favorite album. The only album for me that rivals it is "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore The Complete Recordings", which are the four shows they played at the Fillmore that the original album was culled from that Frampton and Jerry Shirley released back in 2013. 🤣 He is of course, a much better player now than he was back then, but that album has and always will have, a very special place in my heart. Cheers Mr. Baldassarre! MB
Omg wow, thanks for this one. I actually love and play all these but the Frampton tune. I was 14 in 1976 freshman in high school and all this music was so important to me. I forgot just how much good music came out of this year, Frampton Comes Alive, Presence, Rocks, Wired, Hotel California, Agents of Fortune, Day at The Races, all the music you played. I didn't play all of it on guitar just yet but I was very familiar with and loved it all ...,.. Great episode 👍☮️
Man. This is great Carl. Brings me back. I saw BOC and Kansas live for these albums on a Day on the Green in Oakland. What an amazing time to be alive for this great music and these incredible riffs.

This is such a lovely message! One of my favorites. You tell dad I said he’s a great father. And you, by the way, are most certainly his “masterpiece”. I’d bet he’d agree with me. God bless you both!!
Astounded that you got away with The eagles and didn't get copywrought! haha amazing video as always, definite perfectionist while having your own style.
Greetings, Carl! I just discovered your channel. 1976 is the year I started buying rock albums by Frampton, Yes, Deep Purple, and Aerosmith. I started playing guitar the following year and got into all of the prog bands. Thanks for your videos!
You'll have to do another 10 from 1976. Tons of great songs and riffs from that year. Some bands had multiple tunes with great riffs, like Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle", Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand", "Tea for One", and "Nobody's Fault but Mine" and Boston's "Foreplay/Longtime", though all the songs on that album had great riffs. Other songs with great riffs are "Takin' It To the Streets" by the Doobie Brothers, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" by AC/DC, "Passage to Bangkok" by Rush (the "2112" album had some great riffs in general), "Detroit Rock City" by Kiss, "The Boys are Back in Town" and "Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy, and "Sara Smile" by Hall and Oates. Oh, and we can't forget the Theme from the TV show "S.W.A.T."! (BTW, did the guy who drove the van ever get out from behind the steering wheel?) You could throw in some ABBA if you wanted. Of course, 1976 also gave us Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight"... On a side note, I find the title of your album "Collinwood Yard" intriguing. I used to take freight trains to Collinwood Yard in Cleveland!
What a fantastic year for classic rock driven by songs with guitar laden riffs. Punk as a music genre was born in 1976 but I think these 10 riffs prove that Rock was far from a spent force. Everyone of them is a classic and so identifiable and there were so many more...Emerald by Thin Lizzy and Jailbreak by ACDC are a couple of my faves. As usual Carl you look like you are having so much fun playing these riffs and, you're so cool bro 🤘
I am having fun! It’s really awesome to learn new material. It’s satisfying to me personally to be able to play something new and/challenging. Do you know anything about punk music. If so, can you suggest 12 great punk guitar riffs?
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic I don't mind some punk music, I can really resonate with the energy and simplicity but I'm not really an officiando of that genre...I'm more of a Classic Rock fan. Being from Australia I can recommend a song for you to check out from an Aussie band that was one of the first ever punk songs. "Stranded" by The Saints. It has such a driving guitar riff that just hits you in the face!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic "Stranded" by Aussie band The Saints preceded the Sex Pistols and I've seen on YT comments that Malcolm McLaren got the Pistols to emulate their style. It is a great riff you might enjoy.
I never knew the name of it, but when I searched the album, it popped out as being one I remember liking as a kid. I was excited to learn it and include it!!!
That’s an interesting comparison. In fact, I found a rare audio recording on UA-cam of Van Halen before they made it playing Hots on for Nowhere live in a club when they were just starting out. So I think have something there!!
OMG, I almost cried at the end with the Flamenco rake. All my favorites from that era I bought my first guitar. Thank you so much for sharing that, it's all so inspiring. Great job, it's really fantastic and the tone is absolutely amazing. Please keep it coming, this is my new favorite channel. All the best!!!
Hi Carl, great lesson. Your explanations can be understood very well because they are presented in a professional didactical manner and with a lot of fun. Greetings from Germany, Gerald
ZZ Top came out with Tejas that year and they have tons of cool riffs on that one as usual ..'''It's Only Love'' is cool af .. Ly Skynyrd came out with ''Gimmie Back My Bullets '' also in 76..
Carl intesting story -- opening riff for Life in the Fast Lane. It was a lick Joe Walsh used to warmup. Glen Frey heard it came in the room and said Hey man what is that? Joe said -just a riff I use to warm up. Frey goes that's a Eagles song man! This is according to an interview with Joe on UA-cam with Paul shaffer.
I knew there was no way Carl would make a Top Riffs for 76 without including something off of Presence. Hots on for Nowhere is criminally underrated and a great upbeat Zep tune! I personally would have chosen the riff monster that is For Your Life ;) Thanks for another great vid, Carl!
Carl, what a great collection of riffs from "76!Thanks for the inspiration to learn some songs I know and love, some I had not heard before. As I learn to play I appreciate, enjoy, and see music very differently.Especially loved seeing "Hots on for Nowhere"..Presence is in my top favorites Zep records.Love Jeff Beck too..Want to play Led Boots ,your .tutorial makes it possible!😊🎸
Getting caught up on the riff series. So clear and easy to pickup from here. Great to see some BOC- I've got an alternate fingering for ETI that's mildly interesting. Anyhow, THANKS and Happy Christmas...!
Thanks you buddy! Send be a phone video of your fingering for ETI I’d love to see it. I can imagine 1 obvious alternative but I’d be very curious as to what you came up with!!!
This is a great series!..Next up 1977 will perhaps become "leaner pickings" due to the ground swell of Disco and Punk Genres?.. If we can put a live album in the mix,.." The Man on the Silver Mountain" from 1977's Ritchie Blackmores ' Rainbow on Stage's is an absolute Killer Riff!
Ha! Did you check out my 1975 episodes? I dropped in Man on the Silver Mountain (and showed both the studio and live version of the riff). The live version is absolutely insane to play!!!
These greatest riffs by year are super entertaining! Keep them coming! Carl - when you use the JCM800, is the majority of gain coming from the amp or the La Grange pedal which I see you use in other videos? Sounds great!
Thank you! Yes, I bypass the preamp on the Marshall to get straight to the power tubes for that clean crank. Then I hit the input harder with a drive pedal to get the break up I want. For the videos it’s more pedal than amp since I’m running lower master volume. Live, it’s about 50:50.
Fantastic job Carl!..And yes, Rob Shaw, "sure did" step up to the plate. Who could argue with any of those selections. Love your sound/breakdown of Led boots and Aerosmith 'Last Child' with 4 great riffs in a song...I wonder if intro riff for Josie 'Steely Dan" might make the 1977 list?. Arguably the most Bizzare 'Hit song' riff in history?
Thanks for noticing! Btw…I forgot to mention that Beck almost never uses a pick! Like everything else, Led Boots has that unique snappy sound owing to his inside out thumb picking. …I’ll refresh on Josie!
Ha! Glad to not disappoint! Believe it or not…that riff is way more fun to play (and more challenging) than it is to listen to. It seems like almost a simple throw away kind of tune, but it’s a very formidable thing to get right. There are lots of components to it!!
You’re my kid brother! Haha! …my editor Billy pulls them together the thumbnails. They’re getting better as we go. I love the look of them. Thanks for mentioning! We put so much time into the details.
Subscribed ! Carl do you know about the Vidami pedal ? it's really cool sir. I'm learning lead & iti s very helpful leaving my hands free for UA-cam learning (69 th B-day gift).
Most of your videos remind me that I have poor attention to the little details in a song. I'm going to open up my ears a little and pay more attention. I also don't play much rhythm guitar and I don't know why, this is also going to change. Thanks for sharing these killer riffs with us.
Thank you for the bend up on the G in Life in the Fast Lane. I slowed down his Tonight Show performance in August and completely missed it. Just reviewed again and now it's obvious.
I haven't even finished watching this whole video but I feel a need to say, well I won't say exactly what came to my mind... yeah I will. Well fucking done!!! Love the BOC riffs!!! Some of the others so far are sort of obscure but great, which makes it even better. Ok I will finish watching now that I got that off my chest.
Love your stuff, I appreciate your work for sure. FYI: The first part of Rebel Rebel seems to be played at the second fret and not slid up like you demonstrated. I watched a bowie live concert and that's the way (Adrian Belew?) played it
This was great video. I think if you had played every riff on the album Presence that would have worked as a 10 greatest of 1975 too. Page's high water mark to my ears.
If discussed previously, please forgive me as I’m a new subscriber, can you please talk about your particular les paul, I love the color and sound. Love your channel, thank you!
Howdy! Just finding you for the first time today. You know your music! I have some great music history. Leave it at that. Ps. Have you ever done a special on The James Gang? Very underated! See if you can figure out where the band Boston got riff for their biggest hit. " More then a Feeling " Yes! James Gang. I know you can figure out the song. Remember Tom Scholtz was a huge fan of Joe Walsh!
I'm hoping I can really piss you off about the track choice. 1st one to mind 10CC I'm Mandy, Fly Me (brilliant album) 2 AC/DC TNT (the only time I saw them live with Bon Scott but it was Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap album when I was 15) 3 Thin Lizzy Boys Are Back In Town 4 Steve Miller Band Rock'n' Me - huge Steve Miller fan 5 Manfred Mann's Earth Band Blinded By The Light You made a bit of an obscure list but you also left out Steely Dan but it could be a very long list.
1970 Free - all right now Guess who - american woman Jimi Hendricks - (Band of Gypsys) - Machine Gun Clapton - After midnight Santana - Black Magic Woman Neil Young - Southern Man Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 Dereck and the Dominos (Clapton) - Layla Kinks - Lola The Door - Roadhouse Blues Deep Purple - Flight of the Rat Grand Funk - Sin's a good man's brother Steven Stills - Love the one your with Black Sabbath - Fairies wear boots (They released two albums in 1970)

You're very welcome! Love Germany! What city are you in?
Picking up the Queen Riff was awesome. Nice job, thank you
No problem! My pleasure!!
ZZ Top came out with Tejas that year and they have tons of cool riffs on that one as usual ..'''It's Only Love'' is cool af .. Ly Skynyrd came out with ''Gimmie Back My Bullets '' also in 76..
Was watching the year old video &: wasn't aware Page used the Herco Flex 75, been using those forever myself. 😎👍
Thanks for giving some love to the great Buck Dharma with ETI. That’s my favorite BOC tune!
Yay! It’s awesome.
Thin Lizzy had some great riffs off the two albums they released in 76'
Just discovered your channel, love what you're doing 🤘
Carl intesting story -- opening riff for Life in the Fast Lane. It was a lick Joe Walsh used to warmup. Glen Frey heard it came in the room and said Hey man what is that? Joe said -just a riff I use to warm up. Frey goes that's a Eagles song man! This is according to an interview with Joe on UA-cam with Paul shaffer.
Killer video and fantastic riffage, my man!
Thank you!!!!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic Yes sir! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Carl!
Hey, don't forget about the secret treaties album...love to here you do something from that one.
Oh, my God, yes! "Stargazer" is epic!!!
That was my favorite!!
i think a video of your favorite guitarist would be awesome
I knew there was no way Carl would make a Top Riffs for 76 without including something off of Presence. Hots on for Nowhere is criminally underrated and a great upbeat Zep tune! I personally would have chosen the riff monster that is For Your Life ;) Thanks for another great vid, Carl!
Glad you liked!
Queen wins that list IMO. Just a badass riff.
That makes me happy. So glad to help!!
Thanks Carl,that was cool
Love these years riffrospectives! Now, how about a rig rundown?
We’ll need to get that going!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic wanted to ask you about Aqualung chain and application of pedals, please?
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic I sent you a mail..Not sure if you got it.
I was hoping you'd include something from Presence, and of course you didn't disappoint! 😁
Ha! Glad to not disappoint! Believe it or not…that riff is way more fun to play (and more challenging) than it is to listen to. It seems like almost a simple throw away kind of tune, but it’s a very formidable thing to get right. There are lots of components to it!!
Man you are Boogie with Stu ! Holding up my lighter 💥
Love love love this comment!
I was 13. Carl your thumbnail pics are fantastic!
You’re my kid brother! Haha! …my editor Billy pulls them together the thumbnails. They’re getting better as we go. I love the look of them. Thanks for mentioning! We put so much time into the details.
One of my favorite Stones riff is from 71, Can't You Hear Me Knockin
YES!!! Me too. I have to do that!!!
I taught myself "Life in the Fast Lane" with my Lady's encouragement, but I have yet to nail the nuances.
I hope this video helped. The notes are important, but It’s even more about the expression and articulation.
1 st time here, this is great ! from Les Paul's hometown. 70 in Feb. & my hair is as long as Carl's. Go boomers !
Ha! Welcome boomer! So glad to have you. I hoped you subscribed!!
Subscribed ! Carl do you know about the Vidami pedal ? it's really cool sir. I'm learning lead & iti s very helpful leaving my hands free for UA-cam learning (69 th B-day gift).
Ahhh, I wish you hadn’t mentioned the Hercos, they’re what I use!
✌️😎🎸🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
Most of your videos remind me that I have poor attention to the little details in a song. I'm going to open up my ears a little and pay more attention. I also don't play much rhythm guitar and I don't know why, this is also going to change. Thanks for sharing these killer riffs with us.
Your so welcome
Just come across your channel - Great vids - I'm like a kid in a candy store checking them out.
Glad you like them! I hope you subscribed!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic Already done & dusted.👍
Thank you for the bend up on the G in Life in the Fast Lane. I slowed down his Tonight Show performance in August and completely missed it. Just reviewed again and now it's obvious.
I know. It’s a great piece of magic. Happy to share the knowledge!!
Carl you are fantastic in these videos. I would like you to do a video showing some of Billy Gibbon's best riffs. Thanks,
Bob Richardson
Thank you for the suggestion. Do you have 12 favorite riffs from Billy I should consider?!
I love how you didn't just go for all the obvious hits... got some deep cuts in there.. respect!
Thank you!
Haha! I hope you feel better getting that off your chest. I’m here for you!!
Hots on for nowhere. Is one of my favorites
I loved learning it!!
You're too good to us with the Kansas 😁
It was purely my pleasure!
Love your stuff, I appreciate your work for sure.
FYI: The first part of Rebel Rebel seems to be played at the second fret and not slid up like you demonstrated. I watched a bowie live concert and that's the way (Adrian Belew?) played it
I debated that!
This was great video. I think if you had played every riff on the album Presence that would have worked as a 10 greatest of 1975 too. Page's high water mark to my ears.
Yes, Presence was a Page centric album!!
If discussed previously, please forgive me as I’m a new subscriber, can you please talk about your particular les paul, I love the color and sound. Love your channel, thank you!
I’m actually preparing an episode on the topic!
Wow! So you where talking about Boston! Just reading what someone said about Tom and Boston. Maybe you already know the song I was talking about!
Yes! I have a cool episode on the James Gang/Joe Walsh. Check out my past episodes. You’ll LOVE that one!!!!
carls the man
Hi Carl, love your work, check out Just got Paid riff from ZZ Top and Double Trouble from Skynyrd. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
Better have some Boston in 76..... lol....edit: and you didn't disappoint 👏
I would have picked Lines on my Face from Frampton. What a song
I'm hoping I can really piss you off about the track choice.
1st one to mind 10CC I'm Mandy, Fly Me (brilliant album)

5 Manfred Mann's Earth Band Blinded By The Light
You made a bit of an obscure list but you also left out Steely Dan but it could be a very long list.
I really like your list! I’ll check out the 10 CC

Was hoping you would do Achilles last and nobodies fault but mine from Zeppelin's Presence album! I like those power riffs better than hots off for nowhere!
I hear ya!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Carl, love your videos, I put you on .50 speed so I can follow better. You really sound like your stoned LOL. Hope that doesn't offend you. Thanks for the lesson. Watch all your videos.
Well, it was the 70’s! Haha! I’m glad you like and I hope you subscribed!!
Would you agree that there's a Page influence in the BOC guitar interlude of "E.T.I."?
When you first mentioned it, I wasn’t sure. But now that I think about it, I could see it with considerable tonal modification and additional parts on Presence or even on one of the Firm albums.
Rock on bro led boots I've done this so dang cool 😎 yer amazing 👏dig yer videos
Thank you!
I would have loved to see Stay from Bowie's Station to Station courtesy of Earl Slick.
I’ll check it out immediately!
Stargazer from blackmore rainbow is uber spectacular😊
One of the greatest rock songs of all time. Perfect in every way!
Hi carl! A good way to also give your subscribers count a boost is setting up a give away!
How would that work? Give me an idea as to what I could do! Thank you so much for the idea!
You gotta get to 100G's soon!
Thank you! It would be a miracle. I just want to breakeven!
What effect are you using for led boots? Spot on!
Thank you. Just a short verb and maybe a spit of chorus. I can’t exactly recall.
