I just got mine yesterday. One biggest upside to owning a Kindle is that, it motivates you to read more and more and more. That's why owning this is so important.
I got mine 2 days back. For me the biggest upside is the paper feel. So comfortable to the eye. I used to read on an ipad and phone before this. Comfort wise, it’s not even a competition. It’s day and night difference. If you like reading, a lot, e-ink. You need it. Thank me later.
Appreciate covering non-phone/tablet/laptop stuff every now and then. I've always loved the Paperwhite, though I must admit that for similar reasons I rarely use it anymore.
Same here. I only take my paperwhite to the pool or the beach but that is about it. I also don't see much reason to keep upgrading it. The only reason I upgraded a couple of years ago is that I lost my first gen device. This new version looks cool but it is basically the same as the first gen device I was using until 2019.
@@kbhasi More that my phone or tablet is "good enough" and does other stuff, too. I think the Paperwhite is BETTER for reading, but it's harder to justify carrying it when my phone or tablet is pretty okay for it.
As much as I love the Kindle I can't justify carrying a phone(wich are almost tablet sized now) an iPad, a laptop(or 2-in-1) AND a kindle. I look forward to the days of having a (hopefully pixel branded) foldable phone and a Surface Pro 8/9 as my only 2 devices.
I’m an avid reader, and I just made the switch to e-readers (I like the Kobo Libra 2 better than any Kindle model, but to each their own). I was very skeptical about them, as I love the feel of physical books, but it’s become difficult finding time to read over the last few years. After 2 weeks with an e-reader, I couldn’t be happier! The amount I read every day has skyrocketed. I didn’t miss the feel of a book in my hand as much as I thought I would, at all. In fact, I actively look forward to picking up my Kobo. Whichever e-reader you choose, just get one. You’ll love it.
So I felt the same way about physical books. I don't have an e-reader, but I do use Audible and it's helped me out so much. I'm going to try to get an e-reader soon though.
Agreed! I was all about physical books, after getting the new kindle I have no inclination to buy another physical book. Absolutely love the reading experience on kindle. Feels like reading 2.0 in the sense that it’s more dynamic for the modern world and how we live now.
@@ForeverBetterAcademy Yes, 100% agree. That’s a great way of putting it. I’m almost embarrassed by how quickly I stopped picking up physical books once I got a e-reader. Like I was betraying my old friends lol! But the e-reading experience is fantastic. Like you said, reading 2.0.
@@Dragon1276 You're misrepresenting his point in a boorish attempt to be smart. The point is that you can fit a staggering collection of books on a small device, which, if you're strapped for space or not wanting a lot of things in your home, it's a fantastic thing to have. I have a hybrid library, but I'm much more selective about which books I buy to display on my shelf than the books I download for my digital library. Also, having an e-reader is great if you want to preserve the condition of your books. I read my physical books at home, but when I travel or am on my lunch break, I break out my e-reader because it's smaller, lighter, and more durable to take with me than a book. If you think such a device is too expensive, that's fine, but there are plenty of of us like what this kind of technology has to offer, and there's enough of us who continue to support this kind of technology.
@@Vipercobra88 girl, you are PRESSED! Buying books to “to display”, and miss thing tells ME I’m boorish? Sister, there’s a reason why everyone gave up on eReaders: consumers didn’t find them cost-effective. eBooks aren’t cheaper than physical copies, they aren’t your property (Amazon famously deleted everyone’s copy of “1984”), they can’t be resold, and the lending scheme is restrictive. I think maybe you should really think about gaining some culture and visit a library. Books arent just decorative items, even if that’s why YOU buy them.
@@ikuturso7570 100%, the parent company went out of business, and the Chinese replicas like Hisense aren't keeping the concept up to date. I still stand by the fact that the rounded back of the Yotaphone is the most comfortable phone I've ever used.
Still using my Kindle Paperwhite from about five years ago. Where many other electronic devices have come and gone, it still serves its purpose perfectly. There is something incredibly satisfying about a device that only does one job, very well. For me e-ink is the only way of consuming digital books, any LCD or OLED-based device leaves me with battery anxiety, especially since I like to read for hours at a time.
I swear to God, I have literally watched 100s of channels come and go, subscribed and unsubscribed but you are just radically, and rationally, the best review channel Just be here always, please
The temptation of wanting to check something else is always at the back of my mind when I use my phone/ipad for reading even when DND is enabled and it always distracts my horrible attention span. I don't get such urges when I'm on the kindle and it makes me go to sleep with a peace of mind.
@@GloomGaiGar not really. the temptation is there when I'm reading on phone because I know that with just a swipe I can get to something else pretty quickly. when i'm on my kindle, i'd have to do some extra steps and those extra steps are enough reason to quell those urges for me.
1:57 I have kindle Paperwhite 7th Generation. And it also has same feature as 11th gen to show book cover as lockscreen. It's with the new software update only. Not device specific.
My Oasis is the oldest device I own. I think I've had it since 2016, so I will definitely upgrade it when Amazon upgrades the hardware on that line. I won't get this Paperwhite because I do like the hardware buttons on the Oasis a lot for one handed use when commuting while standing. They're within easy reach of my thumb for flipping forward or back.
Definitely going to replace my oasis with a new one too. Only thing I hope for is better battery life. 6-7h with brightness on 6 is definitely bad and not enough. Having to charge it every other day... or twice a day during lock down last year just feels bad...
I just recently bought the previous version of paper white (at a steep discount) after not having an reader for a good 10 years and I absolutely adore it. I used to absolutely demolish books when I was younger but in recent years I have struggled to reignite that passion. Ive had smartphones and tablets/iPads pretty much that entire but the reading experience on those is just not on par. I did read one ebook on my iPad Pro 12.9 before buying the kindle and the mini LED screen was pleasant enough to look at while reading but the sheer enormity of it meant I had to do so while curled up on the couch and resting the iPad on my legs. Since buying the kindle I haven't been able to stop myself from reading and honestly I would recommend an reader to anyone in a similar situation to me.
I get what you say about visual health not being something you’ll save a lot on if you’re staring at screens all the time. But kindles aren’t only about visual health and long term vision. It’s about comfort and strain. I enjoy reading much more while staring at traditional paper books or… you guessed it. E-ink. It makes for a very enjoyable experience. Especially if you like to read for hours at a time. Weight and design of the device also makes a big difference for me. Kindles are books. And I love it.
The Kindle has a special place in my heart. I recently pulled my 8th gen base Kindle out of the “ignored” pile. I installed the VoiceOver package and now all of my books are audiobooks. VoiceOver is a little wonky (most screen readers are), but it gets the job done.
3:47 That's one of the reasons I love my Fossil HR watch; even with the heart rate sensor, step tracking, and sleep tracking I only have to charge it every 3 weeks, as opposed to charging my Gear S3 every night.
Great and fresh review! I just bought my 4th Kindle last week, and I can definitely relate to that "Oh, Thank God!" feeling at the end of the day! While I agree with you that tablets have higher resolution and better colors and that phones currently have focus modes to prevent interruptions, I found that when I am reading on my Kindle, I am not tempted to check social media or watch UA-cam videos because the device is good for only one thing: reading.
(2:40) It appears to be a cost-cutting measure. The mainboard takes up the bottom half behind the display, so putting the power button on the bottom keeps it on the mainboard without running a long ribbon cable up to the top. I prefer how Boox managed to put their (Poke series) power button at the top! _(EDIT 5 months after posting: Running a long ribbon cable to the top was what Amazon actually did with the power button on the Kindle Voyage!)_ (6:30) Michael, I can understand why you don't really want to get one! It reminds me of how, as someone with autism, I can't use regular Kindle/Kobo e-readers as my primary e-readers, and tend to prefer Boox e-readers instead for a feature ditched on Kindle e-readers back in 2013: active content, or applications.
Thanks for the explanation of the power button, makes sense. I just thought it was the design team were idiots 😄 it's the only thing that griped me on the last device and was annoyed it has carried over.
I would like to see more on the software- being able to put audible and books in same collections. Yes you can use audible on Kindle, but the are hard to get to and once there they did not do much. You can not even bring up the details about the book you are listening to. I love my Kindle oasis but as far as functions - my Kindle Keyboard is still my favorite. I wish Amazon would bring back some of the features that was on that keyboard. I can work my book as a new book so I would know which ones were new. There was more integration with the Audible and the books know it it’s like they don’t even like each other. I upgraded from the Borage just so I can get Audible and ebooks together - so I’m a little disappointing once I get there. So before you upgrade Watch allow reviews and make sure the Kindle does everything you think it will
I was worried about replacing my high-end older oasis with this one ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCgPI5O2AtmcHq9SJhgsCGbpAzJAJfrJp but it is surprisingly light and the screen resolution is just as good. I never had the warm light on my old kindle, but i do not use it on the ipad so I will probably not need it. I think the only thing I'll miss is the self-adjusting light, but this is so worth it!
i like my kindle, but the one thing i really wish they sorted out was proper library groupings, etc. i got loads of collections of books - i wish they would be presented in order of how they are as a group rather than everthing alphabetically. makes it hard to find the next book in the series.
I use Calibre to organize my library collections, and rename book series i.e _Border Trilogy 1: All The Pretty Horses, Border Trilogy 2: The Crossing, Border Trilogy 3: Cities of the Plain._
Agreed. I just want to organize my own view, not be limited to alpha or most recent. I also wish there was a decent icon for the collections. It just looks like a clear manilla folder.
I got a kindle oasis a few years ago. Super expensive but payed for itself really. The warm light at 100% is a game changer, and I’ve read way more books than I would have normally. I just love lying in bed in the dark reading for hours. :)
After finally getting one in decent condition at a bargain price, you know what my favourite kindle is? The Kindle DX. Yes, despite its old age and limitations. I just love that big screen - especially since I peruse lots of PDFs and manuals on a regular basis.
I said it before, ill say it again. Michael, you’re my favourite youtuber. Even if i have no interest in the product you’re reviewing (like this one) i still watch your videos. Good job bro!
@@VVashabi not necessarily for interactions but for a book like experience. And having 2 pages displayed at once will only improve its battery life further.
I just commented that and I agree. I love reading on the Kindle app on my Duo, more than on my actual Kindle, but I want an e-reader in that form factor for the lack of distractions and e-ink. Also, folding it slightly and cradling it in your hand is a more comfortable experience than clutching the side for long periods of time like you do with a regular Kindle. I think it could be quite popular.
You read 1 page at a time depending on the book. Sometimes when you compare a contract with a description of the words used in that contract, so u have 2 books open. Thats the moment when you follow a complicated text and the description of that text. But for reading easy literature, biographies etc, kindles (1 page read at 1 time) are great.^^ Reading 2 or more at the same time is also for technical manuals.
Been an ereader user (kobo) for almost 10 years and literlly hundreds of books and mangas latter. I still say it's the best piece of tech i carry around
I finally broke down this summer and got a Kindle Oasis after doing some research into all e-readers. I can't say enough good things about it. After using it for 4 months I can also say that I agree with everything in your review, even if I take exception with your preference to reading on phones and tablets. Sore eyes and piling up battery charging cycles on a $1000+ device just to read doesn't feel right to me. E-ink makes it so easy on the eyes and the lack of other internals makes it easier on the hands (weight savings). This is especially true given that the first book I bought was one I hadn't read since school, The Fountainhead...a tome that were it in its physical form, would have doubled as a nightly forearm workout. Since then, I've gone through 5 of the 7 Foundation books from Asimov in preparation to be underwhelmed by Apple TVs rendition (oiy). I have many physical books, but I don't think I'm ever going back to reading on those anymore than on ipad/phones. I am keeping them around though, for when the zombie apocalypse knocks out the power.
As someone who works in IT (and likes playing video games), reading is one of the time in a day that I consider as rest for my eyes. So after looking at screen almolst whole day - yea, I enjoy the hour or two without screens that hurts my eyes, with a book or e-reader. I can't see myself starring at those small letters on phone.
I really wish they would bring back physical page turn buttons on kindles other than the most expensive. Until then... I'll keep rocking my ~10 year old kindle :)
I hear ya, as I have a Kindle Touch 4th gen WiFi I found in he e-waste bin at my local recycle drop off, and after replacing the battery last year, grabbing a leatherette case off Aliexpress, stylus pen, and reading light for it, I see no need to upgrade, because when I want to travel lite while needing to get other stuff done besides reading, and despite the battery life my Android tablet has a bigger screen in full color, and does nearly as good.
My last kindle was the voyage because of what you said. I can read on my phone anywhere. Long line in the store or anywhere with lines or waiting? No problem. I am always tempted to get a new kindle every time they update it though. Alas, the phone fits in my pocket better, so… Great review.
I agree with you on the USB C thing. I straight up do not buy new devices with micro USB. I despise that port and was thrilled when I finally was able to switch fully to USB C. It being less prone to breaking is the main reason for that. I honestly don't care about the wireless charging thing though. You barely ever have to charge these so the benefits of wireless aren't nearly as evident as in something like a phone
This is a nice review. The Signature Edition is good for Audible fans. The extra storage is awesome for data-hungry Audible downloads, and the wireless charging comes in handy for those that listen to Audible through their Kindle because of the rather rapid battery depletion from audiobooks. Great stuff!!
Got my new Kindle today (base version) and it shipped with the older style software (no swipe down from above). Looks like amazon have reverted it back, as the freezing issue was wide spread. (Had to look up why my kindle wouldn't update) This is the only review that has mentioned it, I am pretty sure other channels can't have actually used the device to read 🙄 so thanks Micheal for being thorough 👍 Overall happy with the device , the size is good and the warm light is much better. My only gripe is power button, Agreed its bad design and I can't belive Amazon put it in the same place again. 😒
I get the points you make against getting one of these when you own an ipad or a tablet that can run kindle, but nothing beats reading e-ink on a sunny day or when your eyes are tired. And I mean, if you can have the luxury of having both a tablet and a kindle, problem solved.
Yeah. I have several reasons for why I’m getting one. I have an iPad Pro, and it’s just heavy (with a case) making it super difficult to read on. Plus, even at the lowest brightness it can be rough feeling on my eyes. The Kindle just looks much nicer. I get distracted with notifications on my iPad, and the games on it. Not to mention, it dies faster than the Kindle, so having the option to use the Kindle in place of my iPad for reading allows me to persevere the battery life on my iPad. I take public transit, I’ll have to take 1 hour there and 1 hour back. I’d rather have a cheaper Kindle out on the bus than an expensive iPad in case I drop it or robbery. All that being said, my iPad is still useful. I mostly draw, take class notes, game, and watch stuff on there. It’s so good for doing class work in bed when I can’t be bothered bc I’m lazy, lol. So yeah, weight, battery life, less-likely to get robbed for, and more distraction-free. The Kindle is great for that.
Hey Michael greetings from a long time subscriber! I really liked the review, concise and informational, of course the production and the shots are top-notch! I would like to point out something: could you please review a Kobo e-reader? I have the Kobo Aura HD and I couldn't he more happy with it! Basically, my point is that I think Kobo deserves some recognition and a review of one of their products from you would be really interesting to any potential buyer. Anyways, thank you so much! Pura vida! 🤘
I upgraded from an old Touch (with a case that has an integrated-swing-out reading light - got it long before built-in illumination was a thing on Kindles) to the Oasis a few years ago. While I'm not likely to switch I definitely see the attraction. The size of the old Touch was a bit better and I'm envious of the USB-C charging.
On August 18th my kindle keyboard will be obsolete. It's in a case with a pull out light and I like that. I have to but the kindle paperwhite 11th generation in order to be able to continue ordering and reading books but it doesn't appear that a case with a light is available. How do you read yours in bed in the dark? Thanks!
I actually avoid devices that do not use USB c. I've passed up many mouse and keyboards due this reason. Same with laptops that do not use it for charging or have it as a charging option
Been doing that since 2018 (or 2019?). Initially, the USB-C ports (not so much the cables) were a problem for me due to some of them being limited by excluding either data, charging, and/or video. Since 2020, USB-C ports have been pretty solid and super convenient, especially if you have a modern USB-C equipped laptop and a USB-C desktop monitor to connect it to. Bluetooth 5.x lightens the necessity of the port when it comes to some accessories. All that's left is USB Type-C 2.1 for 240W charging + Thunderbolt 5 for 80Gbps data transfer speeds to make eGPU viable. Hopefully USB4.1 (or whatever it'll be called) will be home to both.
Basically PS4 controllers are the only thing I ever still buy with the micro USB port. It's the only reason I never upgraded to a decent paper white and continue to use the very old Kindle when I really want one.
It’s amazing how many new devices are still on micro-USB. You just want to sit down with the product developers and make them explain what they were thinking.
welp I think you just sold me on the kindle. Ive been holding off for a while because I just love the feel of books. But I'm sold. Thanks again for such a fantastic review
I've had the paperwhite 3 for 3 years now and it's a device that I use for reading books and manga, especially manga these days. It's still a solid device.
I just got the PaperWhite4 a few months ago. Let’s see if Amazon does their usual thing of holiday sales on their Amazon Product lineup. Type-C,the smaller screen bezels, and the improved night-mode reading seems like a worthy upgrade since I mainly read my Kindle at night while in bed winding down from the whole day.
I am still waiting for the day that Kindle will give us the reading tracker (for everybody, not only for the kids account) with daily goals and that we can also see how many hours we have read weekly, monthly, and yearly, and plus, with some badges, as Kobo does.
Yep I agree with the cable part, it's so nice when I visit coffee shops and wanna play games and read just needing one cable and one power brick for my phone, tablet, switch and switch controller/Xbox controller
Kindles are so great! But to be honest, I would still prefer other brands or a tablet considering how versatile those are, like taking note and access to other application. Otherwise, this is enough.
I bought the new kindle but not the ultimate edition, so I think less space and no wireless charging I love the bigger size, the smoother screen and way better charging system. Best of all it's way more responsive than my old kindle Paperwhite. I do not love the very fingerprint proned glass cover
The most crucial feature for me with the kindle is it's easy text to speech feature which is really helpful for me to stay focused when reading books that aren't on audio. There are apps, like say in the iPad, that can do that too, but it's rarely as high quality without paying a subscription of some sort, and if I'm going to read with my eyes, I prefer the eink. If others have better ideas for ebook text to speech options, I'd love to hear them.
@@Scientist_Salarian For sure. Used to have a kindle oasis. The 2019 model. Returned it after a few weeks. Especially the disappointing battery life compared to my kobo Libra H2O was a big issue. Among others.
I made the switch to the Kobo Libra 2, and absolutely love it. The Libra 2 comes standard with all the options that you pay extra for with the Oasis, for $100 less. Unless someone reeeally needs an aluminum case, or already has a Kindle library built up, there’s no reason to get a Kindle.
MrMobile as soon as this video came up I was pulling out my Kindle Fire HD 7 tablet. Lol. I still from time to time read my books and mags on it. Battery life is still amazing to me because I only do the basics on this Kindle. Such as ebooks, emails, surfing and some streaming. I dont play games or video chat. I just wished those paperwhite ereaders were a littlen cheaper because I got this Kindle Fire HD for only $27 on prime day and I got the exclusive blue teal colored one too. lol Great review by the way.
The lack of e-ink is a dealbreaker for me. Black and white isn’t an issue when reading regular books, but I’d prefer being able to see colour when reading comics and manga
I need eReaders in my life. I'm currently using a Kobo Libra. I use their integration with my city's library system (saved me tons of money) and it has awesome ergonomics. I actually like it more than books in many cases because I can easily one hand them while eating/snacking.
Hey Michael! Could you do a review on the new Kobo models like the Sage or Libra 2? I think they are pretty good competitors to the Kindle Oasis and Paperwhite.
I still have an ancient kindle. The one with the buttons on the side. Now back lit. I love it. Got around 700 books in my library. I really really like my kindle
For me, an e-reader is still the best choice. i have a Paperwhite Signature Edition, and I love it. I find myself reading on my phone every once in a while. Sometimes even on my iPad (although I like that more for writing than for reading). But I don't think anything beats a Kindle e-reader for immersive reading. I can read two hours at a time on a Kindle. I just can't do that on a phone. And I wouldn't *want* to do that on an iPad.
Was looking forward to a review of the new kindle paperwhite with the bigger display. Looks good. If I had not gotten a Kindle oasis a few months ago I would have picked this up.
I loved my "white" paperwhite but had damaged the screen in one small area so was looking to renew. But wow I don't know how anyone would want to read a book with a "black" border! Obviously I'm the only one, but I returned the new paperwhite right away because I couldn't stand the huge dark border. Pages in books are white, I want a white border!
I love my paperwhite, and usb-c is borderline enough for me to want to upgrade. At this point, the paperwhite is the only thing I have that uses micro-usb and it is annoying. The only upside is that I don't have to charge it constantly.
Yesterday I went to an Amazon four-star store and looked at the two devices, and I must say that the new paper white signature edition felt very cheaply made. It's essentially all plastic! I know it's a matter of opinion but, I don't see what the excitement is about this device. When I held the oasis (metal back, with a glass front), it definitely had a premium build feeling, as it should. The oasis definitely allows for better hand positioning. Again after looking at both of them in the store, I would say for those who have an iPad, or any sort of other tablet they just use that! I have a secondary phone which is a Z-fold 2, and I will just use that as my E reader. The experience is great! It's in color, when the phone is fully open the screen size is 7.6 inches. granted the device is a little heavier, but, I felt as though I was getting a more authentic experience with the Z Fold 2 the the Kindle device? Until the devices are made very similar to the oasis I can't see spending 150 or $160 for a plastic device. Again thank you so much for your review, as it pushed me to go and see these devices firsthand.
The screen is glass but yes the rest is plastic but very nicely feeling plastic. For a plastic device it’s definitely top quality in my mind-or at least my 6-year-old PW is. And that one doesn’t have a glass screen!
I do personally think e ink is way superior for reading than a phone. What I do enjoy about the phone is being able to use the different apps to read instead of just using Kindle or kobo
I have the Kindle Oasis and the iPad Mini 2021, I really prefer the iPad. At night, with minimum brightness and nightshift it looks like the text is sharply etched into the darkness of the room, the Kindle you get this greyish/orangish cheap looking low contrast light that smears the text a bit. In direct sunlight on a long trip recently, the kindle is marginally better as you do need to crank the brightness on the iPad up to near max for it to look good, but it was still usable down to even 50% brightness. Other than battery life, which is less of an issue for me as I don't read for longer than 2-3 hours at a time, the iPad is a much nicer reading experience for me.
@@shinkaidono4641 I tried a few matte protectors and found the reduction in brightness is worse than the glare for visibility, not to mention reducing the battery life when not in sunlight by needing to crank the brightness much higher.
@@shinkaidono4641 I actually had a matte film, the reduction in brightness was more significant than the glare reduction benefit so I ended up taking it off.
Used to have and love my kindle paperwhite. But after discovering just how much i could sideload onto a kobo and also the overdrive function of kobo, kindle's value proposition fell considerably.
I agree with you about the eye thing. I’m on screens all day everyday. I’m typing this on a 2021 iPad Pro. I read on all devices including my iMac. I just can’t tell the difference. I love my Kindle though and I prefer to read on it. But I don’t think Kindles are portable. I don’t take it out of the house. I prefer my iPhone because I like to travel light. Notifications don’t bother me because I don’t allow every app to send them. Also ’s new Focus mode is really good for people who just can’t seem to not get distracted. I did preorder the Paperwhite SE and I absolutely love it. It’s the best Kindle IMO. I personally don’t like the Oasis. It’s just too awkward. I also don’t like buttons. BTW, Kindles aren’t back lit. They are front lit.
I can relate about a part of being forgetful to bring the cable for my kindle which made me have to buy a new one on the airport... And the main personal reason I still use an e-reader to read ebook over smartphone/tablet, is its battery life.
I think standard tablets and phones are the way forward. They are flexible and allow for any number of different readers. Like, I use Kavita for reading comics, mangas and my epub books. The readers built in and it keeps track of my progress across multiple devices, all I need is a browser. Kindles are too locked in and don't let you have solutions like that.
I would expect so. He used to be a big fan of them before the 2016 version made some questionable decisions. I would expect him to see if it meets his needs again.
I didn't realize kindles were still around. I still have my 2011 Kindle with built in 3G and it served me well, even when living abroad, but I don't use it anymore. I have a Fire Tablet which is very useful for school and I mostly read books on my phone (using the blue light filter) through my library's libby app.
I have a last generation Paperwhite, and most recent Oasis. I wish they both had type c, and wireless charging would be cool, but otherwise they are amazing. Great video Mr. Mobile!
I own the Oasis, so it’s not likely I’ll get this one, but USB C and Qi are huge to me, especially Qi. I have a Qi charger on my nightstand and laying the tablet down on the charger is the most natural way to charge. It’s something you can do in the dark without fumbling for a cord, especially in the dark.
I don't understand your conclusion. The appeal of an ereader is the e-ink display. Just like you I stare at screens all day and the last thing I want when reading before going to bed is to do it on an active tablet or phone display. It just hurts my eyes. E-ink is just so much better to read on it's not even close. It's not going to replace your phone because it's not meant to. It's for a comfortable reading experience and active displays are worse in every single way.
The Kindle is definitely preferable to me than a phone for reading. Most of my reading is done in bed and I don't have to worry about falling asleep with my phone attached to a cable, or on holiday in the sun where the Kindle is massively superior. In most other circumstances I would agree a phone / tablet is just as good
Your comment about the lock screen showing the book cover is interesting. Here in Canada we have a E-reader called Kobo and they have always had the feature
Type c wouldn't normally be a big deal to me bit at this point, my kindle oasis is the only thing still needing a micro chord. But I just got this thing last year, so 🤷. Glad to know they are *finally* moving up. When this thing dies or I have it a few years, I'll upgrade
I love the Kindle screen (vs my phone) and love the ability to easily download library books. And if I put it into airplane mode, I can keep the library books indefinitely.
I just got mine yesterday. One biggest upside to owning a Kindle is that, it motivates you to read more and more and more. That's why owning this is so important.
Is it worth it? I'm thinking about getting one
I still have my seventh gen from around 2015 and it literally makes me read more **because** I find it such a cool nifty gadget
I agree. Reading is something that I can't let go and this is why these mediatek-powered Echo devices are always so helpful to me. Love them.
Can you connect a USB stick? Can it read any pdf, even the ones with scanned images?
Appreciate covering non-phone/tablet/laptop stuff every now and then. I've always loved the Paperwhite, though I must admit that for similar reasons I rarely use it anymore.
"similar reasons"
As in, it can't do much, right?
@@joshread3740
Oh, my thoughts while reading your comment were wrong. I now see what you mean. Thanks for your reply.
I also have a Kobo Libra! I love the library integration, and the ergonomics are just perfect
Can these devices read any pdf? Even the ones with scanned images? Can I also connect a USB driver?
Dedicated reading hardware is nice. No distractions, just you and your book
Like a library…but expensive.
@@Dragon1276 It can fit hundreds of books in the palm of your hand. I'd say it's worth the premium.
@@fifteentwelve are you reading hundreds of books at one time??? You should film a tutorial on that!
The e-ink display is one of those features that you don't see very often but can't help but want to see for yourself. It's a nifty little feature! 👌🏻
I used to use a Yotaphone 2, which had both eink and AMOLED, and loved it. I'd still be using Yotaphone today if they had Modern SOCs
And they’ve been around for years, they’re not exactly new
Yeah, once you read on an e-ink screen, you wonder why it took you so long to get an e-reader.
@@NigelMelanisticSmith Yotaphone was a cool concept - "when phones were fun".
@@ikuturso7570 100%, the parent company went out of business, and the Chinese replicas like Hisense aren't keeping the concept up to date. I still stand by the fact that the rounded back of the Yotaphone is the most comfortable phone I've ever used.
Even though I'm a Kobo user, reviews about e-readers always get me excited. e-readers need more love and exposure too 😁
I just got my first kindle last year and I've watched a bunch of videos about e-readers. It's cool to see what everyone offers
@@thefury4815 yup. Exactly 👌
Kobo definitely needs to get wireless charging. They made significant gains in colour ereaders. Now, it's time to take a page out of Amazon's book.
I got a Paperwhite for my birthday in February, my first Kindle and I LOVE how it is JUST an e-reader. It works great.
Got a 10th gen Kindle Paperwhite and holy shit it's awesome! Reading "Racing in the rain" and a few fanfiction is a lot better now!
I swear to God, I have literally watched 100s of channels come and go, subscribed and unsubscribed but you are just radically, and rationally, the best review channel
Just be here always, please
The temptation of wanting to check something else is always at the back of my mind when I use my phone/ipad for reading even when DND is enabled and it always distracts my horrible attention span. I don't get such urges when I'm on the kindle and it makes me go to sleep with a peace of mind.
isn't the temptation still there if your phone is near you?
@@GloomGaiGar not really. the temptation is there when I'm reading on phone because I know that with just a swipe I can get to something else pretty quickly. when i'm on my kindle, i'd have to do some extra steps and those extra steps are enough reason to quell those urges for me.
Preach! Yeah, that’s the problem with 99% of smartphone users.
1:57 I have kindle Paperwhite 7th Generation. And it also has same feature as 11th gen to show book cover as lockscreen. It's with the new software update only. Not device specific.
I was thinking the same thing
Even my basic kindle 10th gen kindle have this feature.
Wish we can set our own lockscreen tho
That's a Good beard, Sir.
ITS BEEN ON KOBO FOR A DEACADE
My Oasis is the oldest device I own. I think I've had it since 2016, so I will definitely upgrade it when Amazon upgrades the hardware on that line. I won't get this Paperwhite because I do like the hardware buttons on the Oasis a lot for one handed use when commuting while standing. They're within easy reach of my thumb for flipping forward or back.
Yeah I wonder how long they'll make us wait for it USBC Oasis...
I still own a Paperwhite from 2014. Works like a charm. I will only upgrade it when it dies.
Yeah, hardware buttons is the only thing that makes the oasis worth it for me.
A book with a dictionary lol... book 2.0 kindle is perfection
Can it read any pdf? Including the ones with scanned images only? Also, can I connect a USB driver?
(2:40) It appears to be a cost-cutting measure. The mainboard takes up the bottom half behind the display, so putting the power button on the bottom keeps it on the mainboard without running a long ribbon cable up to the top. I prefer how Boox managed to put their (Poke series) power button at the top!
_(EDIT 5 months after posting: Running a long ribbon cable to the top was what Amazon actually did with the power button on the Kindle Voyage!)_
(6:30) Michael, I can understand why you don't really want to get one!
I'm guessing you have invested heavily in an Amazon library, but Kobo does have "collections" that let you organize books in that way
They should really come out with a new version of that big thing. The common PDF is a pain on the smaller screen
Absolutely. That is why I purchased the 13.3 inch Max Lumi2. Really wish Amazon would get back into a bigger form.
I said it before, ill say it again. Michael, you’re my favourite youtuber. Even if i have no interest in the product you’re reviewing (like this one) i still watch your videos. Good job bro!
It would be cool if flagship e reader like Kindle Oasis would be in a dual screen format like surface duo.
Why? You read one page at the time anyway. And e-ink for interactions like taking notes, multitasking is so bad with its refresh rate.
@@VVashabi not necessarily for interactions but for a book like experience. And having 2 pages displayed at once will only improve its battery life further.
@@farissalim7208 or the front of duo to have e-reader display
I just commented that and I agree. I love reading on the Kindle app on my Duo, more than on my actual Kindle, but I want an e-reader in that form factor for the lack of distractions and e-ink. Also, folding it slightly and cradling it in your hand is a more comfortable experience than clutching the side for long periods of time like you do with a regular Kindle. I think it could be quite popular.
You read 1 page at a time depending on the book. Sometimes when you compare a contract with a description of the words used in that contract, so u have 2 books open. Thats the moment when you follow a complicated text and the description of that text. But for reading easy literature, biographies etc, kindles (1 page read at 1 time) are great.^^
Reading 2 or more at the same time is also for technical manuals.
Been an ereader user (kobo) for almost 10 years and literlly hundreds of books and mangas latter. I still say it's the best piece of tech i carry around
I bought a kindle paperwhite 2018 version second hand, and it's been wonderful. I've used it everyday while in hospital.
7:07 beneath a surface! A great read. Recommended!
Another fantastic video sir. I am a big e-reader enthusiast and have had many different Kindles and also two Kobos. love them all
My last kindle was the voyage because of what you said. I can read on my phone anywhere. Long line in the store or anywhere with lines or waiting? No problem. I am always tempted to get a new kindle every time they update it though. Alas, the phone fits in my pocket better, so…
Great review.
(Had to look up why my kindle wouldn't update)
This is the only review that has mentioned it, I am pretty sure other channels can't have actually used the device to read 🙄 so thanks Micheal for being thorough 👍
Overall happy with the device , the size is good and the warm light is much better.
My only gripe is power button, Agreed its bad design and I can't belive Amazon put it in the same place again. 😒
Keep the Kindle content coming please ❤️ even though it’s not a device with news all the time.
I appreciate it.
THANK YOU for reviewing e-readers.
I know they don't get the same views as iphones etc.
@Tony oh cool no one cares
The kinds of lines at the end about spending the paper for e-paper was one of the reasons I subbed to the channel.
Pura vida! 🤘
Oh neat, they made a new one.
I got a Kobo Clara HD for myself.
Great thing, I need to read more though.
I just pulled up my old Kindle and thought about upgrading it. Then your video popped up. Definitely thinking of an update now.
Thanks!
I still got my old Kindle paperwhite, glad they are still updating it. I feel it's hard to improve since it's a pretty good device
Yeah I'm much the same way. Something has to be extremely valuable in compelling for me to even consider micro USB these days.
USB C-lub
Still got my Kindle 4, about a decade old and still going. That's the problem with e-readers, once you've got one, you don't really need another.
Amazon could get everyone to upgrade if they would just make them in color.
welp I think you just sold me on the kindle. Ive been holding off for a while because I just love the feel of books. But I'm sold. Thanks again for such a fantastic review
I think you will be pleasantly surprised, while physical books are great the kindle is actually easier to hold and read from.
I've had the paperwhite 3 for 3 years now and it's a device that I use for reading books and manga, especially manga these days. It's still a solid device.
This would be great if I had an extra budget but for now my LG Stylo II in B&W reading mode gets the job done.
Simply some of the best tech reviews on UA-cam. I really appreciated this as I am trying to read on my Kindle more.
Pretty sure there is one.
Only problem is that it is only viewable via the Kindle app.
Yep I agree with the cable part, it's so nice when I visit coffee shops and wanna play games and read just needing one cable and one power brick for my phone, tablet, switch and switch controller/Xbox controller
Appreciate the honest review esp the last part
That’s why a big fan
Kindles are so great! But to be honest, I would still prefer other brands or a tablet considering how versatile those are, like taking note and access to other application. Otherwise, this is enough.
Agreed!
I have a Kindle. And I'm happy with Not putting it for charging everyday. Charge it once and it runs for a month with no issues. 😂
I bought the new kindle but not the ultimate edition, so I think less space and no wireless charging
I love the bigger size, the smoother screen and way better charging system.
Thanks for the review. I absolutely love my Kindle Paperwhite, I only regret not getting it sooner.
Choosing Kobo Libra 2. USB-c, better battery life, plays nice with more formats and stores and has physical buttons.
That’s the one I switched to, and I love mine. Better than the most expensive model of Oasis in every way, for $100 less.
@@Scientist_Salarian For sure. Used to have a kindle oasis. The 2019 model. Returned it after a few weeks. Especially the disappointing battery life compared to my kobo Libra H2O was a big issue. Among others.
I'd like to see your review of the Kobo Sage/Libra. I see you haven't done reviews on them and am curious why you like the Kindle so much.
I'm also a Kobo Libra user. It was the integration with my local library which has saved me tons of money, and the grip is really ergonomic
My mum still uses the kindle paperwhite 2 to this day and it still works well in 2021
For me, an e-reader is still the best choice. i have a Paperwhite Signature Edition, and I love it.
Can I ask you how many books will it hold please? 😊
@@heathercollis4510 Sorry for the late reply! Google says that 32GB on a Kindle will hold about 15,000 books. :)
White gets dirty very fast... My OCD doesn't allow it
Thanks for bringing back 60fps videos
Until they can come out with a new voyage I will pass. The new paperwhites still can’t hold a candle to the feel and quality of the voyage.
Just picked one up, and I absolutely love the warm light feature
I do personally think e ink is way superior for reading than a phone. What I do enjoy about the phone is being able to use the different apps to read instead of just using Kindle or kobo
You forgot to mention that the signature edition also comes with no intrusive ads
I'll always love the honest Michael Fisher Mr. Mobile.
I’m super excited for mine to come next month! 😁
Other than battery life, which is less of an issue for me as I don't read for longer than 2-3 hours at a time, the iPad is a much nicer reading experience for me.
matte film will help in the bright sun
@@shinkaidono4641 I tried a few matte protectors and found the reduction in brightness is worse than the glare for visibility, not to mention reducing the battery life when not in sunlight by needing to crank the brightness much higher.
@@DigiDriftZone agree, but anyway for e-ink fans this is an option
@@shinkaidono4641 I actually had a matte film, the reduction in brightness was more significant than the glare reduction benefit so I ended up taking it off.
man, you made think twice during this video about what a would want for reading, nice points, great video as always, liked as usual.
Used to have and love my kindle paperwhite. But after discovering just how much i could sideload onto a kobo and also the overdrive function of kobo, kindle's value proposition fell considerably.
The sheer pleasure I get watching ur content! That's another part of the story that I might not be buying the product anytime in the near future.
I still have my 2018 Oasis. Always had terrible battery life, but I still love it.
MORE PAPER REVIEWS. I would love to see a good reader that is also white paper, and writable like an spen.
Mr. Mobile to the rescue every time. I hear you with the phone options. E-readers are a nice mental separation for me.
Michael, are you planning to review the new MacBook Pro?
By the way, excellent review as always!
Kindle 3G service is ending.
I have a last generation Paperwhite, and most recent Oasis. I wish they both had type c, and wireless charging would be cool, but otherwise they are amazing. Great video Mr. Mobile!
Good one for the readers and contains a powerful display as well. Amazon and Mediatek doing so well together.
I can't wait for your preview on the Samsung fold 3 . I am so tempted to buy it during Christmas
In most other circumstances I would agree a phone / tablet is just as good
Your reviews continue to impress. All the best!
Awesome! I'll buy it next month here in Brazil.
