On occasion, Rick, Corey, Chumlee, and the Old Man have made some poor business decisions that lost them a lot of money, often because they didn’t properly check with an expert about an item’s authenticity. From the signature that Rick got too excited about to the items they lost money on at auctions, let’s take a look at some of the times that the Pawn Stars got seriously cheated.

This is actually a relief. Every time I watch this show I feel so bad for how much they lowball people after confirming their goods are worth usually twice as much. And I'm only ever happy when somebody leaves with their item.

Of course it's fake. What kind of real pawn shop takes the kind of collectors items and weird shit that needs to be researched and authenticated. Those are the kind of things people sell to other collectors. (I also live in Vegas there's a million pawn shops. My father in law always goes into them and looks for cheap tools when he's visiting us from California, but he's a handyman and owns his own business, so he knows when something is worth it or not.). Pawn shops buy things like tools, electronics, jewelry, etc. Or they "loan" you money and you leave the collateral until the loan is paid back. Unfortunately most people needing quick cash can't afford to keep up paying the interest, let alone repay the loan, so they lose their item anyway. Kind of sad, but also the pawn shop is the one that has to sit on the merchandise until there is a buyer, if you try to sell a piece of jewelry in Craigslist or What, you could wait months and have no interest, or find people low balling you. If you need quick cash, sometimes you take the crappy deal case it's better than nothing.
It's not fake per say. The items are curated as in the producers find people with interesting items but the deals are real. You can't get your item back if you sell it on the show

Say something is worth 10grand.
Sell it at auction and you do get 10grand. Spend 500$ on fees and 20% for the auction house. Make off with 7,500 maybe.
Sell it to pawn shop. They'll offer on average 2/3-3/4 what it's worth. On the low end you net 6,600 dollars guaranteed. Rather than risking an auction, that will occur in about 6 months.
Pawn shops however, must take time to sell the item. Use real estate space on displaying an item that can take MONTHS all the way to YEARS to sell. Time and money goes into the selling of these things.
Do you think that everyone who walks in a pawnshop is going to buy something for 10 grand. I wish i could, but i ain't that rich. Anyone who goes into a pawnshop looking for something will not pay full price for an item.
Stop acting like they're ripping people off, their buying stuff, selling it a profit to pay for their store and their employees and than to pay themselves. That's why pawn shops aren't lucrative businesses until you make a TV show about one.

This is exactly why (one of the reasons) they give the "lowball" offers they do, because virtually every item they buy is a risk (either that it's stolen, fake or won't sell for the expected price) and the way to offset that risk is by making higher profit on the other items. You need to remember that they don't need to make profit on that one particular item, but overall.

Well, it's mostly fake. Scripted, picking who is going to be on with what items, that sort of thing. Though it is a functioning pawn store and if you manage to get there when they aren't shooting or closed, apparently you CAN actually buy something or sell something. So it's a real business, just a scripted reality show.

Buying and selling used junk is a huge gamble. When I'm buying I seriously block out any offered information about the item, when I'm selling, I let the item sell itself.
Pawn Stars, like most reality tv, is heavily producer driven to find dramatic moments. I'd be willing to bet some of the "cheats" were arranged to create drama, because the show gets stale if it's just people coming in with neat stuff, getting low balled on it, and the shop making a big profit.

I used to watch this show around 7 years ago; quite surprised to know it still exists. I mean this was around the time of Jersey Shore and other crap like Gangland were still relevant on TV. Or TV itself, since I stopped watching TV in late 2010 as well, heh.
