The traffic light buttons actually do something. I’ve noticed when riding my bike that when sometimes after I press the button, the red stop turns to the white walk sign right after pressed. It doesn’t affect the traffic lights, all it does is change the sign to walk, if it isn’t pressed even if it is safe to walk the sign will stay at the stop symbol.

In Connecticut we don't have those lights you have to press, we have a cross walk with a person that turns white if you can walk when the street lights turn red, and a orange hand if the street lights are green or yellow.
