I hope you are all enjoying those puppies, they are so much fun compared to how big a pain in the butt they can be :) I did the same thing before getting my dog, I watched a lot of dog training videos like this and "It's me or the dog"/"Dog whisperer". it's one thing to see it in video, it's another to deal with that furry love ball. My puppy is crazy about sticks and balls, and I'm struggling to show people how well behaved she is, because at home alone she's a little angel, but once people start looking she acts all smug and doesn't want to listen to me (yet only tries to play with me and ignores people ) still drop it or let go can be hit or miss. I think I would have gone crazy if I didn't watch/read all this info before hand, coming from owning 3 cats for 16 years, that little thing is another world. Yet she's been able to learn something from my cat(the one that is acting more like a dog), introduction went so much better then expected, instead of stressing about the cats and how they would react, I focused all my energy on her and teaching her that cats are not toys. and I used food to lure my one calm cat so she could sniff and watch him beg nicely for treats on to legs :) eventually she mimmiked him and stood up on tool legs begging for treats
It takes years to have a well trained dog, keep watching videos or take an in person class. Training inside vs outside in a whole new environment is key. I love this guy! Also Zak George’s channel too both guys are so knowledgeable, respectful & realistic.
This channel really deserves to be in the million subscribers. Ian teachers clearly and without going around the bushes or click baiting unlike even respected dog TV Shows. Tbh I hadn't subscribed just because of the channel avatar, silly I know. But the logo you use in your videos looks awesome!!
I like the way this fellow explains. Concise, friendly voice; simple explanation. The dog in the example seems more realistically in training than some dogs I’ve seen in other training videos. I’ll be using these tips on a bored Australian Shepherd at a house/pet sit I’m doing, who is currently spoiled by encouragement of bad behavior, so his teeth are bruising my hands daily!
I needed a refresher on teaching "drop it" after two years without a dog... now we have a new puppers, very smart. Your video encourages me to stay a step ahead and train up a happy, well-behaved family member. Thank you.
I've learned so much in an hour watching your videos than any other training research I've done! your videos are golden and I'm going to share them with all of my friends!
I’ve been searching up training videos and some are like 80 percent advertising and the rest useful info. You have broken stuff down for me. I feel more confident. I will be using your tactics! Thank you !:)
Just adopted a two and a half year old female Border Collie / Australian Shepherd mix who's super loving and I'm getting pretty excited about getting training off on the right foot and honing her intelligence skills. And now I find a good channel where I can learn a lot of great tips and methods from someone who looks like they could bellow the hell out of Pursuit of Vikings. Nice.
We love your teaching style. Although we've had dogs before, your teaching methods are proving invaluable with our new puppy. He is responding really quickly to this style and will be all the better for it. Your Bite Inhibition lesson has been, and will continue to be a game changer. Thanks and keep doing what you're doing,
Loved the latency explanation. Great, informative videos. Having a real problem here with tugging and not dropping it- so I’m going to try your tips- thank you!
My pomeranian puppy is almost ten weeks old and your videos are really helping us. We started clicker training last week with lots of positive reinforcement and it's going really well!
Your videos are the best on You Tube. Explanations are very clear , and you present them in a way that encourage us to train our dogs. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
where was this channel when i got a new dog two months ago omygosh. I've literally watched so many videos on how to improve my dog's behavior but this channel is literally a gold mine of information that I never got from two months of looking at other channel's random videos.
We are adopting a new puppy thins weekend. We foubd him a few weeks ago but he would be 8 weeks old until this Friday. We are so excited but I have really been watching anything I can about puppy training (that's how I found you). I really appreciate your week thought out videos. Thank you so much
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I was doing everything but hiding the toy, it immediately helped when I did. It makes sense since he was getting frustrated and wanted both treat and toy, just very conflicted (same for tugging the toy!). Tried with a different toy as well and it worked great. Even removed the lure and edible treat towards the end of the session and he dropped the toy and showered him with verbal praise and pets instead. TY!! ToT
Ooooooohhhhh!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!! Ima start his training today! I've been trying to teach him during rug of war.. But I've been doing it wrong. lol He's older, but he has tons of energy. Get ready Max!!🐶 🙌🙌
I'm so glad I found your channel, you explain things so much better than other big channels... I wish you all the success in the world.! all the best from Iceland
This seems so simple but seriously started to work immediately. My puppy loves to fetch so i didn't even need to use a high value reward. Thank you for sharing!
of all the thousands of videos on same topics, I rate yours most efficient and enjoyable ways of training! i found you very late still pleased as my puppy is only 4months old. I especially loved your video about 4 types of dog toys, there is hardly any info on similar topic anywhere in the Internet. Thanks alot!!!
I'm getting a boxer puppy in a few weeks. My husband and I have been thinking about it since November and decided to go for it. I have been doing a lot of research because I want to make a good decision whether getting a dog it's right for us and our kids. I have to say I have watched plenty of videos online and have read many articles and websites. I find that YOUR videos are one of my top favorites because you explain everything with such detail. Keep up with the good work!
I now feel like a pro. I just started fostering (with intent to adopt), and every now and then, she won't let go of the tennis ball, even with the treat. I literally got her over the living room to grab a tennis ball, dental bone and have the treat all for her. It took a minute or two of waiting it out, but she let go and received praise.
Drop it has been moving along nicely, I've been practicing with my 3-month-old pup for about 3 days now and his latency is getting smaller. Leave it, on the other hand, is making zero progress lol. But we will keep trying. Thanks for the video! Even in 2017, it's still useful in 2020.
Love your videos. I have been sending them to my daughter that is getting a puppy soon.. Since i dont live close to her so i can train her new puppy. I have always trained all my dogs as well as other peoples. Many of the things you do is how i do it. Thank you for being a good instructor.

This is awesome. I really like your teaching style, clear, visual with written text to consolidate plus real life videos. Thank you. Now I’m off to your other videos....
We have trained some drop it, and it's a bit reluctant with toys. Recently we were out on a walk and my dog was of the leash walking maybe 10m ahead of me. I see her going down in to the ditch and picking something up and going back up on the road, it turns out to be part of a animal ribcage. I ask her to release it, and she does it at once. Was a very proud dog-mom.
You're videos are excellent, extremely informative and helpful with our 12 week old Boston/Pitbull puppy! I knew I could trust a guy wearing and Amon Amarth t-shirt!
I so agree with tug. It is a staple for my Rottwielers. It’s fun to let them tug with each other. I just got a new puppy, Millie, and Gage is already playing tug with her. I have the same rules as you. They get to “Win”, sometimes, but he must be gentle and release when I say so. I never did use treats. I think I will start saying drop it instead of let go.
I found a reference to the book 'Mine!' on one of your videos. Just wanted to say thankyou, I used it to design training activities to work on my older dog being less reactive to our new dog around food, and so far so good. The new dog ate some cheese off the floor next to my older dog whilst he was eating this morning, and we didn't get more than a glance in his direction. I'm always amazed at the behaviours people live with when they could tackle them with the right info. Great channel as ever, thanks!
That's really great! I'm glad that book was helpful for you! I think you're right: the info and help is out there, it's just a matter of getting to it and then (here's the hard part) executing the plan! Good job for doing it and I'm happy to help!
You're amazing!I wish I could go in the past and watch every single video of yours before I got my dog.He is 6 months old now,idk if he would be easy to teach, but I'm definitely following your methods for everything.
I taught my dog 'leave it' for both 'drop it and leave it' as I found it very similar. I followed these steps and it worked, he knows the command well, however, he learnt very quickly that he gets rewarded with a treat so he started doing naughty things so I can say 'leave it' and he can get his treat and we are now in a vicious circle. How do you advise me to act in this situation ?
The minute my dog sees a treat, he will completely lose all interest in the tug toy. He will not "take it", will concentrate his eyes on my hands waiting for a treat. He will do "take it" or "leave it" if I refer to the treat but not to the toy. In fact, he will try all other commands like "down" or "high five" but will absolutely pay no mind to the toy. It's frustrating.
Great advice and my dog does great with drop it when playing tug and fetch. But this control is not translating to dropping items she finds on walks that she likely considers really high value, such as mulch or the occasional bits of a dead animal (yuck). I have been training her on leave it/drop it/take it to try and combat some mild resource guarding. I was wondering if you have any more advice for this particular problem, I would be so thankful!
Thanks so much for ALL your videos. You make things very clear and all information if fantastic. Was wondering, with a new puppy, do you work on one lesson per day or can you teach other lessons throughout the day? Or is that too much?
Excellent advice! My question is... what do you do in the meantime before your dog completes his learning on a topic WHEN you need the response. Do you use the command, knowing that it may not be followed, and then force them to release something (like the leash)? That becomes a game for them, too...
Before it's ready it's a management issue. Try to restrict access to things they shouldn't have, don't make a big deal about everything they grab unless it's urgent or dangerous, and don't be afraid to bribe them if necessary in those cases. We'd never WANT to have to do that, but if your training isn't in place yet, throw a handful of food on the floor and just get it. That said-always keep practicing and building it up so you don't need that stuff anymore!
Very interesting! I was one of those people told by a dog trainer not to play tug of war as sogs are competitive and want to win and it can get aggressive. Keep in mind I have a 17lb maltipoo haha but he's stronger than you'd think and walks 5-6 miles a day. Muscle arms and legs haha. Glad to know I can actually incorporate tug of war into training. Thanks for tips! 🙌👌

When training a puppy tricks like sit, leave, drop it, etc. Is it better to do only one at a time and wait until they master it before moving on to the next trick or is it better to teach them multiple at once?

Before it's ready it's a management issue. Try to restrict access to things they shouldn't have, don't make a big deal about everything they grab unless it's urgent or dangerous, and don't be afraid to bribe them if necessary in those cases. We'd never WANT to have to do that, but if your training isn't in place yet, throw a handful of food on the floor and just get it. That said-always keep practicing and building it up so you don't need that stuff anymore!
I thought you were good but the Amon Amarth shirt taught me you are great
Amon Amarth shirt.. "Honey! There is this guy with a video on teaching puppys, he seems like a good fella. Wanna get some tips for our pup?"
🤘
You had me convinced just with the intro
Is this a good/safe game to teach puppies?
Come to watch to train my dog and surprised to see you wearing an Amon amarth top! Definitely subscribing! 😅
Thanks for subbing!
Great video. Love your teaching.

Several channels down in my search and I'm wondering why this video and channel doesn't have more views
I love this channel a little bit more since noticing the Amon Amarth shirt.⚔
Valhall awaits!
What do you do on the first time for the first drop if they don't drop the rope. Thank you
Very interesting! 🙌👌
Hi Monica! As long as you teach the rules of engagement, tug makes a better behaved dog, not a worse one!
@@SimpawticoDogTraining alright, awesome! We adopted him last year day after Father's Day and he's a sweet and great dog but can be mouthy especially play time he gets a little overstimulated, so I will try this. Thanks! So happy I found your channel!
Omg I love your shirt. Great band!
