- In the last episode of History Traveler, we were exploring the grounds where the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry was fought as depicted in the movie "Lincoln". In this episode, we're going back to the battlefield with @digginonfaith531 to do some metal detecting and see what we can unearth from this vicious fight that took place in 1864. What we pulled out of the ground must be seen. Be sure to watch to the end!

Note: for extended adhesive strength, always wrap the tape around and overlap it on itself. It sticks to itself well and wouldn't to fabric-like material.
A 3 rounds minimum if you're gonna get it wet, and use a plastic bag over your sock when putting boot on.
Worth the time, effort, and money, to have dry warm feet.
Happy Trails!

Hi I have been a fan and subcribed for some time now. I think your chanel is one of the best on UA-cam and a benchmark for other chanels to aspire to.
I give lectures on the American Civil War and early modern history as well as living History and reenactment. I would love to see some content on the Salem witch trials, or on how reeactmet and living History is a way of keeping History alive and understanding the past.
I am also a preacher for or the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and a chaplain friend keeps inviting me to NC. I would love to see Gettysburg some and think your partnership with the Gettsburg museum is fantastic, I would love to see it some day.
I wish you all the best in your work in Poland and I am also excited about the content that you are posting from there. Keep doing the great job that you are doing.
PS. do you have any merchandise for sale?
God bless, Oscar
Thank you again for visiting the Grant County Museum! We truly appreciate your support. Keep up the great work, as your channel is absolutely fascinating!
I’ll never forget that day. I’m grateful that we had the opportunity to save some Jenkins’ Ferry history together.
Absolutely! We need to go find some more 6 pounders. And a cannon.
Ive said it before, I'll say it again. This channel and the Gettysburg museum videos need to be required curriculum viewing for every classroom in this country. Well done Gents, OUTSTANDING CONTENT.
@@TheHistoryUnderground amen to that!
What are the chances that the Union soldier when he was crossing that river got his belt or something caught up on a log or something in the water and took that knife out to cut his belt or whatever to set himself free to get away. Which could explain why the bullets and belt and those other items were found right there? Maybe he dropped the knife to or maybe he got shot and passed away right there in that river
@@treyreece6187 it's hard tellin not knowin... But it's definitely interesting to ponder on
This is sooo COOL!! Metal detecting a battlefield has been on my bucket list ever since my Dad took me to Little Bighorn Battlefield when I was 8 years old. I'm now 40 and living vicariously through you, JD. Thanks for the excellent content, keep em comin!!
Thanks! So glad that you're enjoying it.
You are a blessing.
Thank you.
Fascinating and too much fun 😀
Thanks!
The Civil War as it says in the name was an American affair but also had an impact around the world. The end of the war led to a crash in the cost of cotton leading to peasant revolts in India and threatening the British rule. History never fails to amaze
Definitely interesting to see the ripple effect that it had throughout the world and throughout history.
Good to know
JD, your stuff is absolutely incredible. I'm not afraid to express the fact that I am an extremely jealous man. Your ability to find, examine, research and share history is extraordinary. Thank you for letting us participate.
Thanks. I feel pretty fortunate to be able to share these stories.
@@TheHistoryUnderground thanks again. Please let me know if my comment above about metal detecting is interesting to you. It’s a very significant thing historically
I know I’m late to the party. But I would like to say congrats on your first Civil War relic. Being the first person to hold a relic after it was lost by a soldier almost 160 years ago is a feeling that never gets old. Congrats again !!
Thanks! Appreciate that.
A big hi from Northern Ireland, another amazing episode. I really love everything that you do on UA-cam. Have you ever thought of coming to Ireland to look at some of our history. I live near to the historic walled city of Derry/Londonderry and I think that you would love it here. History is not just the only passion that we share, I am an accredited preacher of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and my faith is very important to me as well. I study Civil War History at Ulster University and my planed dissertation will be on how Robert E. Lee's faith and honour code and how it shaped his life and the way that he fought the war. Please keep doing what you do so well, I have a chaplain friend in NC who keeps asking me to come over to the US, but your show allows me to see places that I may not otherwise never see. Kind regards, Oscar
Wow! So wild to find that bullet and be the first person to touch it since the Civil War! This was fun!
Pretty crazy.
Ain't going to lie, the letter from the soldier to his family inexplicably shook me up w bit.
Yeah, pretty sobering.
What a fun episode. My grandfather went to an event in Gettysburg in the 1930s. He saw a field that had been recently plowed and went into the furrows and found about 8 minie balls (the pointy three ringed kind) which he kept in his roll top desk. He would get them out from time to time to show us. After hearing that I always thought how much fun it would be to go digging like this with a metal detector near a battlefield. And according to your episode today, it is indeed fun. Any kid or adult who likes history would really get into this. When you expose a child or teen to close-up history like this it changes them in a profound way. I grew up during the 1960s when America was going Civil War centennial crazy and our parents took us on summer trips to various Virginia battlefields We went to Gettysburg on a school field trip but my parents also took us there. Another summer we drove to Canada and stopped at Fort Ticonderoga for an even earlier stop with history. Kids who grow up in the New England or mid-Atlantic states have so many sites and historical places of interest to visit if only their parents will take the time to take them there. It's a great way to get your kids hooked on history and off social media (unless they are on google researching historic sites!) This was an excellent episode. Thanks so much. I hope you got a new pair of boots!
Thanks so much! Still nursing that busted up pair of boots :)
The size of those Minnie balls are just horrifying, no wonder the Civil War was so bloody and brutal.
Just to think, The Last Human to hold that canon ball was the Union or Confederate Soldier who loaded it into a canon over 150 years ago.. That is truly Awesome!!!
Crazy.
Here we go!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
👊🏻
Incredible finds of that in tough war. Brave soldiers💝👼😘👍
Thanks!
Discoveries like these bring a real sense of immediacy to history. A great-great grandfather of mine, Jacob Farnsworth, served with a regiment, the 36th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, that fought at Jenkins' Ferry. Thanks for sharing the video.
Fascinating! Finding that six pounder and especially your first Civil War bullet knowing that the soldier who carried it was the last to have it before it found it's way into your hand, special. Great work JD.
Thanks. That 6 pounder was cool as heck.
was it in the same area he found the ammo pouch and other things ? kinda makes you wonder if maybe the soldier was killed by that right there .
@@andreguillette6293 most likely it's his body that preserved the leather artifacts and the wooden ones too
The size of that round ball, and Minnie balls that are found are horrifying in their size. Terrible wounds!
By far the best channel for historical content there is. Surpasses cable by far. Can't say enough.
👊🏻
I Don't Know How I Missed This Episode I Always Love Learning From You J.D
I bet duck hunting with those guys is a blast. The history they have learned about their area.
Ha! I'll bet it is.
EXCITING !! William H. Colborne's letter is truly poignant. Congratulations again for your first discovery of this rifle bullet. Alan from France.
Thanks! And yes, that letter is something else.
Just discovered that he's a distant relative of mine!
Great to see you home safe!
Thank you!
Again Love it JD, Thanks for keeping me learning about the civil war.
Glad to hear it! Thanks!
I haven't had the opportunity to comment on your videos from your time volunteering to help the brave people of Ukraine but I want to commend you and thank you for your and your family's efforts to help deal with the darkness of totalitarianism that has once again fell over the Eastern part of Europe. A return to the "more distant past" is a welcome diversion but not something that takes away our continued support of free people in Eastern Europe and elsewhere still fighting those that would subdue them. God bless you.
Thank you. Appreciate that.
Goodness, it’s already been more than a year to the russo-ukranian war 😕
Very cool 👍 I'm glad you finally got to detect a bit. It's always amazing to pull something out of the ground that you know was dropped so long ago. Makes it more personal.
Very much so. Cool experience.
That knife could have been the very one used to carve JW in the cartridge box? Cool thought
I thought about that later. It's certainly plausible.
@@TheHistoryUnderground a feast for the imagination to be sure!
It was in the same hole as the cartridge box, so I’m 100% certain it would have been his pocket knife. No coincidence. 😬
@@digginonfaith531 very cool!
Really enjoyed this battlefield search.
Thanks! Glad that you enjoyed it.
That letter man WOW HIT ME IN THE FEELS!!
Pretty moving.
@@TheHistoryUnderground very. Love it have a good week sir!!!
Very cool episode JD! Congrats on your find. I can’t imagine how much civil war artefacts are still in the ground.
👍🏻
That’s so amazing!! Gosh, I love History! Thank you so very much for taking us along. Thank you,as well, for not taking sides in this, as I love all Americans!✌️
This is amazing to see these items just left there for over 150 years just to be discovered by you guys. That is true history. One of my favorite videos of yours!
Thanks 🙏🏼
Wow.
Colberns letter touched me immensely
Pretty moving.
That box of stuff that guy had is unbelievable
Duct tape boots! That’s brilliant! Nothing like a good mandaid 😂😂😂
Ha! Didn't work too well.
@@TheHistoryUnderground true, still that’s hilarious and it made my day! Girls use hair pins~men use duct tape!
Another job well done, JD! Awesome video! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your many more videos to come!
Enjoy you videos so very much!!! It’s like you are present history right before my eyes🥰🥰🥰
Glad you like them!
Awesome video! I grew up in Wetumpka Alabama and we dug up artifacts constantly in our back yard. Arrow heads, pottery, round balls, buttons, pieces of a peace pipe… we even dug up a stone doll that was hand carved. it was always a good time when we got to play outside!
Wow!
Great job. Love seeing the actual artifacts where they laid during the battle. So interesting. I got injured at work, so I’ll be home a lot…. Keep the videos coming……
Appreciate that. Hope that you recover soon and enjoy the videos while you're off.
Very much appreciated
Man, metal detecting makes me wish I wasn't in a wheelchair so bad! So many cool things just beneath our feet! My metallic butt would wind up digging a six foot hole before I realized the detector was picking up my wheelchair 😖
😅
Wow amazing ! Great finds in American history
Glad you enjoyed it
Mind blown!
👍🏻🤯
Nice finds. Great episode
👊🏻
It’s so amazing the history that still in the ground. It just takes some research knowledge a little luck and permission to go on these battlefields. Most of them are closed to the public especially for digging relics. You’re very lucky to be able to have someone let you guys go on their property.
Wow! What a great adventure! I love your thinking, "just think, the last person..." I catch myself saying that a lot. Thanks for the continued adventures!
👍🏻
Love your channel! I find history SO interesting!!!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching.
Artifacts that are that well preserved after 150 years is amazing, hope the original owners survived 👏 the War. And led good productive lives afterwards 👏
This was totally fascinating and I didn’t know about this battle. Thank you for enlightening me! Cheers from California
Glad you enjoyed it! Feel free to share it out with others so that they can learn about it too :)
Loved this video, makes you wonder what the men thought while fighting for their lives.
That was a great video. Seeing those relics hit the light of day for the first time after close to 160 years was awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Gr8 content MrJD👍🏻👍🏻
🙏🏼
I am a huge civil war buff I went to Gettysburg on my honeymoon. I also have been to Appomattox. Unfortunately due to multiple back surgeries & a foot & ankle that needs reconstruction those days are over for me. I would love to metal detect a battlefield but since that can't be I'm so happy to go along with you. Thanks for an excellent video
My pleasure!
great job loved the video.
Thanks!
I recently discovered I had an ancestor in the 33rd Iowa Infantry, wounded at Jenkin's Ferry. I've watched this before but had to come watch again now with that personal tie. Keep up the great work, J.D.!
A knife and a 6 pounder!? Amazing!
Pretty crazy day.
JD, I am so glad I found you!! You are definitely one of my favorite explorers because you bring us along on so many exciting adventures. I really love history!!! Thank You
Awesome JD!
Thanks!
I'm really jealous now JD. I've always wanted to take the time and do this. Maybe I can before I get tied to a walker 😆 😆 😆
Have to admit, I was pretty pumped to have the opportunity to do this. Hope to do some more collaborations with Diggin on Faith in the future.
Love this vid. Amazing how Brandon found all that stuff in the water and mud. Even the leather looks new. Wow! Also love the contents of the Grant Co. Museum.
Pretty amazing.
The accompanying music is so haunting
It is so interesting that the roads carved so deep in the ground. The same with Oregon trail & trail of tears etc. You can see paths that were made a hundred + yrs ago.
I can't imagine the amount of mud and dust that was stirred up to create those type of deep earth scars.
Agreed.
Amazing!
Thanks!
This channel is so incredible. Thank you for all of the adventure and amazing historical content. The music for all videos fits perfectly with the subject matter. Kudos, well done.
Thank you very much!
Wow
Awesomeness
Thanks so much for bringing us along
Thank you for you’re time
His finds amazing
Like you said the last time it was touched
History !!!
The historical relics are amazing! A tangible piece with a story all its own. Glad folks were respectful of the burial mounds.
Pretty cool to be able to unearth some of those objects.
That letter was amazing
Awesome ep JD and nice shot find
Thanks!
Dam UA-cam. Just been recommended ya channel and I’m obsessed

Well now you’ve gotten to the fun part. Search coils on the ground and did you all find some cool stuff. Man I am jeal…. ous! What an awesome day. Congratulations.
Great show!
👊🏻
Fantastic video JD thanks for all the hard work. Stay safe.
Thanks 👍
That is some farewell letter...wow...
Yeah. Pretty sobering.
JD you hit this one out of the park! Nicely done! Loved the finds from Diggin on Faith! Then to find that 6 pounder! whoa! Loved you were able to search and find a 3 ring shot, how cool! Now I have the itch to go metal detecting !!! Legally of course! Thank you for the video!
Had a lot of fun putting this one together. Glad that you enjoyed it.
DUDE DO MORE METAL DETECTING PLEASE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
Would definitely like to do more.
Love this! I just bought 5 acres right behind the battle of trevillian station. I’ve looked at old maps and us cavalry fought on my property! Keep the great work up.
Wow!
Loved your Normandy series. Loved that you helped out in the Ukraine. But my best episodes are the ones stateside. Great to see you back JD. Awesome job!
Appreciate that. Thank you.
I love civil war history it's just so intriguing!!
Very cool. As always thanks for your dedication to history education
This was a really awesome video, I have always wanted to go on a dig like that. Congrats on your first relic. I can only imagine how incredible of a feeling that is, to dig that up! 🇺🇲
Pretty dang cool.
That was so cool. I enjoyed this very much thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am a member of the metal detecting community. I was fortunate to get to see the things that Brandon pulled out of that water last February when we were in Florida.
I also remember the first 3 ringer that I found.
I just stood there staring at it, wondering about the man that dropped it. How horrible it must have been to be hit by one and to shoot it at another person. I was very surprised how heavy it was. Very surreal moment for me.
Wonderful video guys‼️
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This is one of your best vids. I like the searching for items and finding history still exists. Awesome. Thanks for taking your time to educate us.
Very cool video!!
As for the boots...duct tape inside, Flex Seal on the outside...BOOM...waterproof boots.
👍🏻
Has to be actual Duct tape. He had Gorilla tape, which is inferior
I am just floored! Finding relics is absolutely what I love about history! What I wouldn’t give to have been out there with you. Out here in Hawaii, there are a lot of archaeological finds but it’s so difficult since Hawaiians never used metal ammunition or weapons. This was your best video to date in my opinion. Keep up your amazing content brother!
Imagine the history that is still just laying on and just below the ground. Unmarked graves. Money. Weapons. Still just out there. It’s crazy. That’s why I love walking the battlefields. The feeling you get being there. Seeing how it happened. I’m here right now. My 1st time here. Small, but cool. The good stuff is on private land. But still cool. 10/1/23 rip

So cool. That's amazing there are still Civil War relics in the ground. Thank you for sharing 😊
Great video JD. Your next channel. Should be a metal detections channel. Love this kind of stuff. Thank you Frank from montana. ......
Thanks! I'll leave the metal detecting to the professionals and just bounce in every once in awhile.
Totally awesome . Congrats on your first find This video was great
Thanks a bunch! Appreciate that.
Possibly the best channel on UA-cam. Love the history and your ability to tell the stories and help us visualize how everything went down from the Civil War to ww2 and even your trip to Ukraine to help the refugees. You're a great man.
Thank you. That really does mean a lot.
@@TheHistoryUnderground of course and thanks for the great content. Always looking forward to your next video JD 💯
I follow Digging on faith so this video was extremely awesome... you're knowledge & video isms r my top favorite now 😊
👍🏻
I have never been into metal detecting videos.... you're sending me down another rabbit hole! I thought the metal detecting in Normandy video was cool- but this took the cake! Holy cow!! I vote for more of these types of videos every now and again!
It’s exciting to know that areas like this are preserved and still teaching us.
Agreed. Hope that it stays in a state of preservation.
Even near death the letter from the dying soldier was really touching. Was it his writing and if it was it was beautifully written. I will hold my hands up my writing changes from minute to minute J.D.
Such a fabulous museum.
Agreed.
My Man has some Great Finds belts Buckles 😳😳
AWESOME!!!!!
That battle hook is freakn cool dark bur cool piece!!!
I am from Arkansas and I really enjoyed this.
Thank you for sharing ... wow ... images of what that day must of been like when the relics were shot, dropped, etc. Too cool ...
👍🏻
Great digging & finds gentlemen.
