Many who visit the Battle of Gettysburg sites don't realize that when you are standing in the town, you are actually standing on the battlefield. The town of Gettysburg still bears the scars of the fighting that took place from July 1-3, 1863. In this episode, we're following Tim Smith of the Adams County Historical Society as he takes us through the town of Gettysburg to see what the people endured during those hot, July days in 1863. So much to see here!

Being a Civil War reenactor, I love learning new things. The fact that you would be turned away if you showed up at the wrong Corp field hospital was something I found extremely interesting. I never knew or even considered that. Fantastic video, as always!

I always loved all the witness trees that they've marked all over Gettysburg. Just getting to touch something that was there during the Battle and "saw" it happen is so cool.
History, where would we be without it.
Bound to repeat it.
How fun this experience was to actually visit the town and learn about that battle carrying over into the town. My favorite is seeing the “witness tree” and the actual photo of that tree . If only that tree could talk!
I agree with you. The witness trees are so cool. I love when they have old pictures of them.
There are actually a few witness trees still alive. There are a couple in town right next to each other plus several in and around the battlefield. If you do some research online about the trees,you might have to dig, but it's worth the time. If you're close enough to Gettysburg to visit and see these this trees. It's leaves you with a great deal of satisfaction. Good luck
"Calvito" is so knowledge, he never goes anywhere with out his "cap", his cap is so iconic, Everytime I see one, my thoughts dwell on "Calvito" and his knowledgeable tours of history.
Two Southern soldiers that were fighting at Culps Hill, at night on the first day, ducked into a house in south Gettysburg to get a few hours sleep. Another fellow soldier stood out front and after a few hours went in to wake them up and return to the fighting.
It's kind of weird to see this because I was just there in April if you do go to Gettysburg make sure you stop by Dobbin house for a meal
Those shells and cannon balls in the wall..... They put alot of effort in preserving those little pieces of history!! Thats amazing to see! 👍

Tim Smith, of course, is a genius in all things Civil War. I hope to meet him on a future trip to Gettysburg. Thank you for this series. I’ve enjoyed it so much!
I had the good fortune and privilege of getting Tim Smith for a personal tour that the visitor center offers(which I highly recommend),way back in November of 1992. I had been studying the battle pretty seriously and just had a tremendous time touring the field with Tim. After a three hour tour we did another three hours the next day lol. Hanging out at The Farnsworth House tavern and discussing the battle with historians and authors like William Frassanito, Greg Coco and Tim is something I'll never forget.Tim told me I should move to Gettysburg and become a tour guide...and I came close to doing so, even had the guide test scheduled, all those years ago. It's woken up in me again. I still dream of moving there.

It is staggering to imagine the amount of munitions from both sides of the conflict that were fired during the duration of the battle. Can't imagine the fear that family experienced when that unexploded live shell rolled into the room they were in! So many stories that have not been told... Thank you for another well done video and for preserving the history.
6:24 when I was in scouts we took a trip to Gettysburg and my troop decided to go through that haunted house and I could barely make it through the first room before I had a panic attack and ended up on that front porch loosing it. Good memories
It's interesting, war in general seems so matter of fact when you're only viewing the battles. This look into how the war affected the civilians makes it so much more real and tragic.
I could watch this Gettysburg series over and over.
The devastation that happened those 3 days in July was monumental. To have the battle also be fought in town must of been overwhelmingly terrifying for the residents. Have visited numerous Civil War battlefields this one was the most moving of all of them.

JD when you thought Gettysburg had been discussed at length. You give us a whole new view. I have never seen a briefing on the urban fighting that took place. Popular history covers the high points. But The History Underground covers so much more. Thank you for all that you do to bring us along.

I've been to all these sites. After 4 visits, I need to go back. So much more to see. G-burg is a great place to visit. A ghost tour is also recommended.

Such a great video about part of the battle that most do not think about. Wars extend from the battlefield and you did an excellent job showing us how it impacted the city!
Poor citizens must have been terrified! But so much courage was displayed by them. Never saw the actual town of Gettysburg. Fascinating so much remains of the battle. Bullet holes and cannon balls in the bricks. Wow! Great video. 👍👍👍

I went to Gettysburg twice in the past, it is an amazing place. The stories that the tour guides and the locals give are just unbelievable I saw one of the cannonballs, I heard about the snipers I heard about people hiding in the basements. It’s was just crazy stuff! Great video, I want to visit again.

I appreciate when he is telling the stories and suggests that it might not be true and it has been debated. He doesn't state it as fact, just that it is a story. Many historical battle stories have been embellish to make the central figure seem more heroic, or the event more exciting than it really was. Which is human nature to be important and respected. Some reflections and accounts of battles and engagements are a combination of several battles or events mixed into one story. It's great this speaker let's the viewers know this.

I have been to Gettysburg in the late 1900's,before the renovation. WOW. I enjoyed seeing the way it looks now 😊.
Gettysburg looks like a sleepy little town. I know I haven't seen it all, but it just looks so cozy. That would be so crazy to live during those times and having guns fire and cannonballs whizzing past you while trying to eat dinner.

@thehistoryunderground. Be sure to visit the Gettysburg Museum while in town... There is an INCREDIBLE collection of artifacts, including a collection of personally owned and combat carried Major Richard Winters items
We stayed a few years ago in one of the B&Bs in town of which one of it’s buildings was standing in 1863. Our room looked to the south and the exterior wall had several bullet holes in the brick. A great experience

"I'm just going to leave these artillery shells and bullet holes right here." I'm not sure that would have been my thoughts at the time, but I'm glad someone else decided to do just that.

@@TheHistoryUnderground Have you ever thought about coming to Fayetteville NC? Gen. Sherman came to town and made it known to the Confederates. By the way I love your blogs on the Civil War. The one on the conditions of Andersonville brought tears to my eyes. No one should ever have been treated that badly. Have you visited the gravesites where the 8 crew members of the Hunley are buried? I live alone and have no one to go with me to Gettysburg, ( I live in Fayetteville), Andersonville ( to pay my respects to the prisoners who survived and died) or Charleston. So your blogs are it for me. Thank you for doing them. I love seeing original items of that time period and the extra history.
I may just take the kiddos to Gettysburg this weekend or next sense I live 30 min away. It’s my husbands favorite place and mine sense I studied American history in college.

Seen most of those houses on my trip there. Just so much to see in and about Gettysburg. I spent four days there, and probably never saw guessing a fourth that was then there. Spent most time driving and walking the battlefield itself. Really enjoying this series.

There's some really great books about this. A little less known, but about the sharp shooters battles between the town and cemetery hill and their stay in the town, we're pretty intense.

JD, thanks for peeling away some of the layers of the battle. Your videos are demonstrating that Gettysburg is not a place for a one day visit.
One can spend a week in this area not only learning about Gettysburg but visiting the Civil War museum in Harrisburg but, also visiting Carlisle and learning that a battle took place there on July 1st.
How sad and scary for the people who were living there.
Yours vids are always great, I really enjoy watching them for their honest, straightforward approach and quality production and I am particularly enjoying this Gettysburg series. I am not from the U.S. but lived there for a few years a long time ago and have been to Gettysburg and other battlefields more recently. It is awesome you get the experts in - the NPS and battlefield trust in the US are second to none, an amazing group of passionate experts. I had such an great experience as a foreigner spending a couple weeks just going from one battleground to the next and immersing myself in the history and knowledge. Keep up the awesome work.

If you go again you have to stay at the herr inn. That’s where we always stay. It’s across from the main battle field there on chambersburg Rd it’s beautiful there. We have stayed in both of their buildings. Lots of cool things to see there and they have great food as well.
