    Sony used the cheapest and slowest HDMI 2.1 standard with DSC(there’s confusingly multiple 2.1 standards). So every time you alt tab and load up another program/source you get a black screen for a few seconds instead of your “top of the line” monitor instantly switching. It’s unfortunate they didn’t mention this issue or lack of full HDMI 2.1 like other reviewers have. 😢

    2:19 According to its product page, this monitor is VESA 100, so it's less that it can't go into portrait, and more like the included stand won't allow it. A minor but important detail if one is going to be dropping 1000 bucks on this.

    • @ornithobiography
      @ornithobiography Місяць тому +8

      @@hoofhearted4 Personally, I do. I have an old 2K monitor I daily drive before I got an ultrawide. Now it's on the left side of my main ultrawide and in portrait mode. But here's the thing: I use a monitor arm to hold it up, and the oem stand is in the closet never to be used again. Some would not buy another monitor arm (heck, my monitor OEM stand does support portrait mode) but to me it's not a huge deal breaker like the host of this video said.

    • @Sheaksa
      @Sheaksa Місяць тому +1

      Appreciate the due diligence. What gaming monitors can do portrait mode? None of my >$1400 asus (UGX & UDCP) monitors do

    • @MattverSSJ3
      @MattverSSJ3 Місяць тому +4

      @Sheaksa No prob, I just thought it was weird that of all the features, they'd leave off VESA mounting.
      Conceivably any monitor with a VESA mount can be rotated 90° and put into portrait mode. It's just going to depend on the model.
      There are even kits that support non-VESA monitors that'll allow you to do the same thing.

  • @truejim
    @truejim Місяць тому +58

    This is maybe a dumb question, but should we also talk about how text documents look in monitor reviews? Like, even a gamer will be reading a document once in a while, and some gaming monitors don’t do a great job displaying text.

    • @Fenlen
      @Fenlen Місяць тому +1

      You can check out old reviews from when the first wave of 34" OLED monitors hit - text doesn't look great due to windows not properly supporting the sub-pixel layout and nothing's been changed since then. I have an OLED for gaming and it's not completely horrible, you can occasionally read just fine, but I wouldn't use it as my work monitor.

    • @truejim
      @truejim Місяць тому +3

      @ Yes, exactly! If you’re going to review a gaming monitor, and if you’re going to add the step of showing HDR video, you might as well also add the step of showing a text document. Is the monitor “tolerable” at text.

      Not only that, they should also mention how the resolution+screen size combo matches different UI elements, with different zoom settings on Windows. For example I use 5 different monitors everyday, all at 1080p. One 24" 144Hz perfect for FPS gaming; one 15.6" laptop with external 24" for browsing and working on home documents; one 14" laptop with external 27" at work. The 14" inches is really really bad, especially with a 27" at 1080p. It would help people to know what size/resolution combo is better for them, especially if you spend a lot of money and if you do work on these products.

    Windows HDR is so shit, that I can't use it with my local dimming MiniLED (1100 zones). It dims everything that uses Dark mode UI (white text on black bg) so much that text becomes unreadably dim.. simultaneously, everything bright becomes eye-searingly blown out in comparison, and somehow leave brightening halos beyond edges - not local dimming halos, but some other effect, because it spreads through several "layers" of the surrounding local dimming looking like a gradient. This bright halo effect does not affect HDR video playback, and games that use white text on black BG also work perfectly fine.
    Sadly, many games don't recognize an HDR display when Win HDR is disabled.
    Microsoft should make a "fake HDR" or "game HDR" setting that shows desktop in SDR, but reports HDR to games that use it.

    The number of people that have told me they don't like HDR or that HDR is a gimmick or it makes things look bad, and it turns out it's because their first exposure to HDR was on a $400 75 inch TV or an edge lit monitor without true HDR capabiities.....well, that number is extremely high. I gave up on the battle to convince people though. Everyone thinks what they want these days and you can't change minds

      I don't really get the 24" mode. Does it somehow retain the same 1440p (I don't see how that would be possible)?
      I'm more than willing to be educated. But from where I'm standing it sounds like it's just using a smaller part of the screen (as well as a smaller subset of the pixels). Is it just better because it's easier to drive and actually hit the 480Hz? Or am I missing something crucial here?

      @@SangaPommike24 inches is the standard for esports. If you’re planning on using the monitor for more than just esports, the smaller display mode makes it easy to use as a multipurpose monitor. Usually you’d want to practice on the same size display as what you’d be using in a tournament or whatever and this makes that possible.

    • @SangaPommike
      @SangaPommike Місяць тому +2

      @@SeaIify Sure. But why would you have a smaller number of pixels closer to you compared to a larger number of pixels slightly further away within the same field of vision? What's the benefit? The only one I can think of would be that it's easier to drive the lower number of pixels. But surely there must be more to it than that.
