It's weird, at the time it occurs basic sucks, but even now while I'm at AIT I miss parts of basic. If you ever want to quit remember this: 1) It's highly likely you'll be there longer than you're supposed to if you quit, you'll even have to watch your friends graduate. 2) whenever I lacked motivation, I pictured Hilton field at Fort Jackson, marching through the colored smoke to see my family waiting for me in the bleachers. 3) you did this for a reason, whether it be self improvement, college, a career, or simply to find purpose. This was helpful and hilarious...only because my son left for basic this morning to Benning. I couldn't sleep so I UA-cam "What to expect on your first day". Literally I had just passed up the part where you said that they will get 1 very brief call and then my son's number comes across my screen. Its 10:08pm and he tells me that he's fine. That he arrived safely and is not harmed. Then he said love you good bye. Thanks for the heads up brother!
If you go into it with the knowledge that they are trying to break you down to build you up, you’ll be fine. Pay attention, listen to everything and don’t overlook or ignore the details. Listen and learn.
I had a guy in my platoon one of the drill sergeants knew his name within the first 72 hours of basic training, and I remember my drill sergeant saying, if I know your name within the first 72 hours, bad news for the rest of the cycle.
Funny story, totally true. My senior drill sergeant literally asked me on our last week who I was when we were running around. When he found out I was one of his privates, he said sweet, you must kick ass. And moved on. Being mister 65% really worked! I was in the reserves and my buddies in my unit gave me the best advice, shoot to be from 65 to 75% and they will leave you alone. It worked!
Never had the Shark attack. Our drill sergeants talked to us like men though we were most of us between 17 and 20. They got us in formation and told us what they expected of us and then assigned us our barracks. This was fort Gordon Georgia.1961. Might have been different other post.
I had the same drill sergeants from recp to graduation. Day 1 I'm not gonna complain I had 1 hour of sleep before lineup in the dead of summer. But I had one drill sergeant on my ass straight to graduation then he meet me and my grandfather at family day and his attitude changed and congratulated on what a fine soldier I was to stick with the same mindset my grandfather drilled into my head since I was 9. I was honored to introduce my grandfather to my entire platoon 1 of a rare 70 guardsmen that were shipped off to Vietnam during the war

There a couple of questions that I forgot to ask in an earlier video, and I would be very grateful if you would answer them for me. 1) I cannot remember what the term getting smoked or getting your platoon smoked refers to. Would you give me quick rundown on what that is. I had a head injury in 2004 and there are gaps in my memory. 2) Medical discharge: I do not know if they still have them, but it is an A shaped wooden obstacle with just enough room between the slats for you to get a toe hold with your boots. When you get top, you swing your leg over to desend the other side. Now say you lose your footing, you lose your grip and you fall in such a way that when you land, you jam 4 vertebrae together and you are unable to move because it is like liquid fire running up and down your legs. Now, lets add to the equation neurosurgeons operate on your back 4 times and are unable to repair the damage enough to permit you to complete military training. what is the procedure is followed at this point and what type of medical discharge are you given and how does that affect your future, I.e. employment etc? Thank you much for your time and any information you are able to provide.
I think playing sports at anytime in your life(especially high school) gives you the upper hand, as far as physicality and discipline. If you ever had a coach yell at you lol
I went to basic over 20 years ago. I will say that after the 1st week basic training is not really too bad and actually fun. I loved going to the range learning about weapons. I was surprised that basic was so easy. But I went into basic in really good shape.
There is one huge obstacle nobody talks about much . Lack of sleep. Coming off the street you are used to getting a LOT more sleep. The alarm goes off and you hit the snooze. No more of that. You get woke up once and you get up now. Then from time to time you have some kind of security guard or fire guard in the night...2 hour shifts usually. As a civilian how often do you get woke up, stand there for two hours, then go back to bed ?? This lack of sleep affects how you feel while going through this totally new routine. There is nothing physically hard about basic really. Any healthy teenager or twenty something can get through the run and push ups. One of the best things to be aware of going in is that you will be tired. Plan for that and you will be one up on those who totally don't expect it...Good luck !
Thanks for all your videos. I leave for basic soon and I've been really nervous. Not because of getting yelled at and the physical aspects, more of just not knowing exactly what things will be like. I'm really structured and routine so walking into something not knowing what to expect really throws me off. Matt, I commented on one of ur other videos, I gave u a hard time, but your videos are pretty good. I am just amazed at the changes. Today's Army is nothing like it was in my day. We left MEPS and was on a bus for several hours before we EVER met our drills. When we finally did meet them, it was probably around 0230 when the driver stopped and popped his air brakes.... I don't know if ur still making these, but if I were to add one thing it is to tell people to START getting inshape 6 months befor you arrive. I know you talk about it, but It is in my opinion the MOST important.
As someone who almost made it through the crucible before getting medically discharged in the USMC, and is considering joining the Army now, Army basic sounds like heaven.

It has been a year since graduating Basic training and AIT. Basic was the best and worst time of my life. From the total lifestyle change, to just figuring how to navigate in this setting, eventually becomes second nature. Don't be a shitbag, help your battle buddies and yes and no drill SGT and you got it!
We only did 10 minutes of "hold the gear over our heads" and get our second duffle off a truck and they did the introduction then we went to our barracks for accountability and etc.
Reception is the worst part. It does get better during actual basic training. Basic itself, I’ve found, isn’t difficult itself. People make it hard. Also the quickest way out of basic is graduating
I love watching this stuff because I already went through it. Day 1 was terrible. That bag drill was awful. And then that wake up call in the morning was scary as hell. Haha
It really wasnt. As an AIT soldoer i still have a pretty good memory. It was about 50 lbs. And it was pretty much holdong it over my head, while running in place and doing push ups

GET OFF THE BUS GET OFF THE BUS GET OF THE BUS!!!!! GET UP GET UP GET OUTA BED!!! TOE THE LINE!!! Ahhh the memories...thanks for taking me down memory lane w your videos (however the regrets are forever seared in my memory)
That first day, drill sergeants latch onto anything that presents itself. Physical imperfections, being tall or short, crying (I can empathize, but for your own sake... DON'T LET IT HAPPEN), too slow, too eager, too loud, not loud enough, being the last one off the bus (do not look for logic. It is a mind game.), not working as a team etc. All of that, plus much more, not to mention when you screw up (it will happen no matter how hard you try. Embrace the Suck.). Get past the first day, stretch the soreness away before you go to bed, and try again tomorrow.
It's amazing what one military video search will do on UA-cam. Most of my suggested videos are now military related, before they were random Let's Plays 😂 also I'm seeing random military related ads on Google as well. Gonna lose my mind if a recruiter or someone else from the military shows up at my work for food, or just in public in general.😮
Nothing. If you pass MEPS you should be good to go to pass Reception. All you do there is basically more medical checks and getting issued clothes and stuff
Any Vets on here? I’d love to hear your opinion. Guy I know joined the army. Reported to training and got booted before day 10. Because he didn’t push himself. Didn’t know how. Pampered mommy’s boy. Constantly begging for pain meds lol. To this day, he presents himself as a Army Vet. I hate that he does this. What are your thoughts as somebody who saw it through
It's good that he at least tried to see if it was something he could handle so I wouldn't say anything bad about this person for dropping out because they at least gave it a shot. If I were in that person's situation though I would probably keep quiet about something I failed at unless someone specifically asked about it.
Ft. Knox 2004, the drills picked us up at reception and we had to run all the way to the barracks with all our gear. We had 1 guy piss himself and another one pass out while running. Then the shark attack started at the company building. In between being smoked, they'd make us dump our gear, very stressfully inventory it. Then more smoking. This portion was probably about an hour. Then we went inside. Inside, they lined us up in front of the bunks. And we had the holding our bags up thing for about 45 minutes. Then a proper smoking with front back go's. After it was finally over, we had to make our bunks. Everyone had their bunks tossed a few times and had to start over. Don't remember what else was on day 1 but it was really stressful while it was happening. Didn't seem so bad after it was over though. Low crawling at valley forge for 6 hours straight was definitely worse.
I’m gonna join as soon as I graduate high school, I’m in 8th grade currently and I am extremely patriotic and I am fit and can jog long distances and I used to do 50 push-ups a day a year ago.
They made us out our heads down on the bus while they drove us around post for a while. I kept calling asleep. Found out on family day that I had been half a mile from the main gate the whole time.
Don't think you can be a bad ass to your drill sargent, you will lose!! Your Drill Sargent will make you into a baby boy or girl within seconds. Some days will be very tough, that you don't think you will make it, hang tough. Basic Training is a great memory I will never forget

Ahh....the memories!! Did bootcamp at Fort Knox, Army Cav Scout Veteran. Getting my son ready for Army as well, he will be the 4th Generation! DAMN PROUD!!
I've got a long way to go fitness wise, but I've been making progress and im super excited to think I may be able to join the army in the next year or so. Ive been loving this channel and hope content keeps coming.
I would subscribe twice if I could. I have watched many more than a few of your videos since discovering your channel yesterday, and you have provided a prospective soldier with invaluable information. Thank You!
You're welcome! :)
Go to MEPS this Thursday and my recruiter said if everything checks out I should be shipping out mid January/Early February! Nervous but excited! Thank you for all your vids Matt they have helped ease my mind a bit haha!
Hey man thanks for the vid, leave for fort Jackson tomorrow
34 yrs ago we weren't given the option to quit at the reception station....got on the bus...DS got on the bus with us talked to us until we got to our barracks...told us we have 2 minutes to get off his bus and 1 minute and 50 seconds were gone....great times...ft Jackson 1985 alpha company 9th btn 2nd brigade 2nd platoon...how I remeber all of that is beyond me
1987 for me at Fort Jackson!! Definitely didn't get the option to quit!! Times have changed for sure!!
Ft Leonard Wood 2001. Remember it being so stressful that first day. At the end of Basic we watched our Day 1 video and it didn't look as near intense as it seemed. In hindsight, I'd, frankly, love to do Basic again. Heckuvan experience.
I just started watching your videos ,I love them because you get straight to the point and don’t get off topic !🤞🏽
Processed today and shipping out tomorrow, FT Benning 11x. Thanks Matt
Good luck!!
Kevin Forbes Me too brother. Good luck.
Kevin Forbes Infantry😉
Gnarley man
dab master I recently applied an I’m excited let me know how it goes brother good luck
Heading to Moore in 4 days wish me luck
Thanks for the memories, man. I love your content.
Leaving in exactly 1 week 12 Bravo!
UpscaleRiots Official former 12b here, keep your mind open, dont look them in the eye
benning? leaving same day
rass1288 12b b.c.t is ft leonard wood or ft jackson only

It's really not that bad. Getting yelled at is normal for me. I am ready.
How was it
Kyaun Harris he died
Post Malone he wasn’t ready
Kalani Maiava LOL
It has been a year since graduating Basic training and AIT. Basic was the best and worst time of my life. From the total lifestyle change, to just figuring how to navigate in this setting, eventually becomes second nature. Don't be a shitbag, help your battle buddies and yes and no drill SGT and you got it!
Really like these videos! Please keep them coming!
I just enlisted as a 25B as well, leave for basic March 1st
Less than a week from now... good luck
Let us know how it goes!
How was it?
How was it?
Why does Shark Attack sound like a weekend at my dads house 😂
Kailey Adams you would think the NAVY was involved😂lol
I love watching this stuff because I already went through it. Day 1 was terrible. That bag drill was awful. And then that wake up call in the morning was scary as hell. Haha
Leaving for Fort Jackson next Friday..
goodluck
let me know how it went!! i leave in september to Fort Jackson as well!
I would love to know your experience! My leave day is January 13
Now I know! .. thanks a lot Matt Ward
Just wanted to say ive really appreciated your army experience videos, I'm shipping out early this morning and just wanted to say thank you
It really wasnt. As an AIT soldoer i still have a pretty good memory. It was about 50 lbs. And it was pretty much holdong it over my head, while running in place and doing push ups
Well thats gonna be fun to look forward to
Bus? No more cattle cars? This new shit blows my mind, from what i've heard. *11B Benning 2005*
Hurley25 25 cattle cars?
Cattle cars wth
Cattle cars packed like sardines. E. 3rd 32nd Inf. 3/93
Any advice to a guy joining 11b
@@nathanerickson5166 Change into dry socks on your breaks and keep it dry with foot powder. A lot of soldiers get blisters unnecessarily. Keep your canteens filled.
3:55 i didn’t understand that part if you quit you still have to stay there for two weeks?
Cause they have to bring you back to your home and u dont bring a car so they have to ship u back
Day 1of basic is almost just like day 1 of school
I dont want to sound stupid but that rlly does help to think about it
My son leaves to Fort Sill Oklahoma soon. Nice to know what to expect
This was really helpful, I love it!
Thanks. I was worried that I wouldn't know what to expect
good luck to everyone going to BCT!
Shipping out for BCT January 2nd, 2019! Thanks for all the info, Matt
How was it? If you're out before I go in lol
Leaving Tomorrow morning thanks for all the videos.
I leave in 2 months for 11x 💪🏼 trying to get ready for the suck lol.
How was it?
Perfect thank you that is very helpful wow!!!!!! Sounds fun!!! Yaaay I can't wait!
GET OFF THE BUS GET OFF THE BUS GET OF THE BUS!!!!! GET UP GET UP GET OUTA BED!!! TOE THE LINE!!! Ahhh the memories...thanks for taking me down memory lane w your videos (however the regrets are forever seared in my memory)
i am considering joining the army, may I ask what your regrets were?
Keep em coming!! 🇺🇸
If you quit before basic training can you go a different time
Yes
@@MattWard89 yes. You just have to go through hell to get back in. I am at the moment
Will short people stand out more than tall people? I dont want the DS to give me a hard time for being short.....
I leave in January but this video and all of these comments are taking the slight nervousness I had away
wow ph charger and ph to call home. amazing. time sure changes.
MATT, DO A VID OF WHAT CAN HOLD YOU BACK DURING RECEPTION
Nothing. If you pass MEPS you should be good to go to pass Reception. All you do there is basically more medical checks and getting issued clothes and stuff
Matt Ward thank you 🙏
@@MattWard89 what kind of medical checks like more squatting and stuff?
Thanks man loved the video
When do they take away our phones from us? Also will we be sending our civlian gear back home?
Heading to Ft. Leonard Wood Tuesday.
Jason Hogenkamp see ya there I leave the 6th of Feb
A bro ill leave feb 6th too last name miller short black guy look for me haha
It’s cold asf here man enjoy your time here
I was hoping it would be somewhat warmer than Wisconsin haha.
Jason Hogenkamp i did basic there 18 March 1993 B Co 6th Bat 10th Infantry....good times lol
My son is there now! I'm prior Navy he joined Army...one team one fight
Thanks for the info. I'm leaving this Sunday for Basic training, Ft. LWood.
Leaving tomorrow to reception fort sill thanks for all your videos men
I’m gonna join as soon as I graduate high school, I’m in 8th grade currently and I am extremely patriotic and I am fit and can jog long distances and I used to do 50 push-ups a day a year ago.
It went to hell quickly. The bus ride over scared the hell out of me.
Dont look at your drill sergeants in the eye
My brother just left for fort Benning about a month ago love watching these videos !
Going to infantry OSUT next week!
Good luck!!!
Are you alive ?
1 thing to NOT get is getting called into the company officers office by the drill sergeants. It will look like favoritism to the rest of the platoon or the company
Thank you for telling me what to expect me and my little brother are going to join the military
How come it takes so long to leave when you quit at basic training
Angel Haughton why would you quit
Jawnstaz some people just can’t take the mental abuse
I was at benning as 11b. The whole red phase they'd mess with our heads. The senior ds will tell us one thing, then he'll leave. And the other two will tell us something different. Just to have the senior ds come back out and smoke us for 3 hours after chow.
