I am not a rain rider. Until now. Anytime I have ridden in the rain it has been an unprepared, entertaining accident. Rain has prevented me from riding enough days. It's time I get to used to riding in the rain, and get good at it. I made myself ride every time it rained this summer (if I could get out at a moment's notice for it). Here is what I learned.

Six year Progressive customer here. Awesome experience so far.
“Omg it’s a snake!!!”
I absolutely agree with you. Riding is a great pick me up for the day. Also rain riding is a must.
What is so very cool about your channel... It's watching a young person... who is passionate about something...going for it! Building something from the ground up! I'm an old man in Colorado who is cheering for you.
Rain riding allows you bond with your bike. You haven't lived until you've been completely soaked on a bike. Great job Doodle, Keep up the great work. Love your channel.
From now on I will think of you as being "my little brown doodle"
Thanks for your rain thoughts, you are a fresh breath of air..
Being caught in the rain with no gear or the wrong gear is miserable to say the least. These days I have become a fair weather rider, but a light sprinkles does feel good when it is ninety plus degrees. I can’t believe that people give you grief about your arms. It’s how God made you. You are a beautiful person.
I use to worry about rain, then I did a few wet track days. Some of my most memorable rides. Dragging pucks in the wet. The tires have about 80% traction IMO. Street riding in the rain is nothing to be scared of. Just be smooth and you have nothing to worry about.
Nothing to worry about? How about fresh rain and oil slicks. I’m not talking about “it’s already been raining for a while” I mean literal fresh rain+oil slicks and corners.
@@elitericeeater most of your oil slicks would be on exit ramps, 100 feet leading up to, and at stop lights, at stop signs, etc.....
@@elitericeeater ok you got me. There is that and poor visibility.
I live in the U.K. it rains a lot! 🌧🌧🌧🌧Riding in the rain is the best excuse for deep cleaning your bike, oh, and for remembering to ensure your tyres are in good shape. I want to invent a windscreen wiper for helmets! 🤣
Spary your visor with nikwax visor spray makes the rain bead and run off
@@chris79877 : thank you, I’ll try that! But now I’ll never be a millionaire 🤣🤣
I was vacationing in South Carolina at Hunting Island camping when remnants of a hurricane hit land during the night, woke up the next morning and another camper advised me that the weather was gonna change in about 45 minutes, I packed up my camping gear on the bike and headed back to Georgia, I didn't make it 30 miles before my leather gloves were completely soaked, I stopped at Wally world and bought some dish washing gloves these are great because the will go over the sleeve of the rain jacket.
Here is the list of my rain gear. Jacket, pants, rain boots and dish washing gloves. I generally stay pretty dry with this setup.
When I first started riding I was commuting in Florida. Getting rained on felt great...right up until the moment my underwear got soaked. After that it sucked. Now I have rain pants and shaft drive 🌧 👍
Thanks for the genuine impressions of gear and rain riding. It took one 300-mile day in heavy rain to teach me the best wet weather gear lessons, I could’ve used your input!
I love riding in the rain, especially after dark. Must have confidence, good tires, gear, and an appreciation of the zen state of mind that life on two wheels offers. Another good lesson Doodle!
Hi Doodle, take it from a UK rider, riding in the rain is the most natural thing, and eventually, you'll get to love it! Once you've you've got the right gear! and your channel can help with that.
Doodle your the best! I really value your outlook and enjoy watching you explore the world of motorcycles. Stay cool Miss Doodle!
I love the challenges you give yourself. It helps me make challenges for myself too.
It happens. Years ago, before I had a brain, I got caught in a rain storm about 50 miles from home in a t-shirt and shorts. It felt like buckshot on bare skin. Only happened once, and I learned my lesson. You are very entertaining. Happy to call you my "little brown friend." Stay safe
Its wet weather season for me here in Melbourne Australia, I still smile even though its miserable weather cause Im still riding my bike, and thats important for me.
“Ur little brown friend Doodle” McNoodle. Ur funny D Mac.
Great vid Doodle as usual. I really enjoy riding in the rain but usually do when i’m commuting. Having really great gear is key, waterproof boots, gloves, love my macna aytee jacket, pinlock insert in helmet.
Also my Pirelli Angel GT 2 Sports Touring Tyres inspire so much confidence!
Keep riding in all conditions , makes you a better rider. Stay safe and have fun!
Keep up the great work 🤠
I've got these high rubber galoshes from Oxford that go over any footwear and with rain gear keep me perfectly dry.
Keep riding! Keep smiling! Ride safe!
A few weeks ago, I was up in Suches, and noticed the clouds getting darker and angrier. Decided to head back to Atlanta, in hopes of avoiding the majority of the rain. About half way back, the skies opened up for 20 minutes or so - deluges of rain, small hail, lots of wind. didn't have my pseudo raingear with me, and I was out in the open when it started. Mesh jacket, vented boots, leather gloves. By the time I got to the first overpass, I was soaked, so figured "why stop now?" Thought it was funny driving my bike in the rain at highway speed past these cars parked under the overpass waiting out the storm. By the time I got home, the rain had been done for a while, so my shirt and jacket had mostly dried out, but my hands were black, my boots were soaked, and my pants were wet in the most uncomfortable, (protected from the wind while riding on a bike) areas. Good times.
😅 sounds like an awesome adventure
Doodle you are building so many riding skills, you are facing all your fears and just steam rolling over them! You are a great role model for other young people. Stay well and enjoy the ride! :)
In the U.K. , I honestly got wet weather riding gear (boots, gloves, jacket & trousers) before even starting license training - you just know it’s gonna be a wet one at some point in the week (and it could easily be a solid week of rain every day at the height of summer).
I just hate having to wash the bike and lube the chain afterwards.
My laziness is legendary
I hated getting caught in the rain when I first started riding…I had some sketchy times. Much more comfortable riding in it now.🏍💨🤙🏻 Stoked for this group of vids!
Having good motorcycle tires on baby motorcycle is important along with common sense about following distance allowing for more braking distance, keeping in mind watching traffic behind you giving yourself more cushion! I personally love riding in the rain! Yes once rain starts it raises the oil off the roads causing roads to be slicker at the beginning! I've ridden in hail storms that cars and other vehicles stopped and avoided! Snow, slush ETC! All of these are real part of really riding motorcycles across country! ALWAYS packing the correct riding gear for all situations
As a New Zealander who lives in a really rainy region (I want to commute) I appreciate this
My rain gear is a two piece - an outdoor jacket with a hood and yachtie pants. Boots are wp and I have wp over-mittens. I put my hoodie top on under my helmet and it stops water running down the back of my neck. Yay! The only thing that freaks me out in the rain is running over the painted road markings. That stuff is as slippery as ice when wet. Otherwise, traction is pretty good on my Michelin Road 5s. Never doing anything suddenly works both in the wet and dry. Love your work!
Doodle, you need 1 million subscribers!
Rain riding is what really sold me on riding... I really didn't know how much I missed being out in weather until I was out in it. I got a rainsuit (bmw branded) and just did it!
I ended up taking my CMSP in the rain and wet. Luckily it mostly rained on my ride there and back and not as much on the course, but boy that really set the basic.
I always love to ride in the rain 🌧 here in New York. It’s a challenge do too bumper to bumper traffic on the highway!
I had a phobia of riding in the rain when I first started! However I live in the uk so I have no choice but to ride in the rain. I took it slow with short trips and now I love riding in the rain 🤪
Omg 😆😆 Doodle!! You almost picked up a smooshed snake!! 🤣😁 I’m crying over here!!
welcome back my best rider
Good rain gear is rather costly but worth its weight in bullion. Been in some serious downpours on a old vintage Honda years ago and got soaked to the bone after just ten minutes. My hair was long then, and the only cure for hair was a hair net which pulled everything up under the helmet bet air circulate to dry my locks if they got wet. Yeah the Country Club Staff razed me about the hair net, but they messed with me for having long hair any ways. Glad I'm not the only Merfolk out there that just doesn't give a hang any longer. Happy Doodles.
Many of us have ridden to the Arctic, me included.
Rain sucks, but it is a fact of life in the far North.
Any money spent on the best waterproof gear for the far North is money well spent. Gore Tex, or the aftermarket equivalents, are the boss. If applied in multiply layers, and when multiple layers underneath are warm that can stay warm while wet, you have a chance. The top jacket must be long enough to cover the very high "farmer john" style riding pants, which are equally waterproof, breathable, and with armor. The riding pants must cover the riding boots as well to shed rain. Also under the riding pants, be sure to have a few layers of pants that will keep you warm while wet. All of this advice can be used in addition to heated gear.
Do not make the mistake of trusting in riding gloves that have a Gore Tex inner liner that is not firmly attached. Just try to take your glove off, pulling the liner with your hand inside out, and then try to put the glove back on! I carried a backup pair of heavy duty dish washing gloves when I couldn't get my riding gloves back on. Don't ask!
For sure that riding in rain is a good learn experience which every rider should do or have done and keep doing it every once in a while to maintain the experience on wet roads.
I've been full time on my GS for a couple months now. North FLA gets soaked on the reg. Got some over gear rain gear from Nelson Rigg and am extremely impressed.
Great topic and interesting perspectives. I live and ride year round in Northwest Washington state. Rain riding is about half of riding. Good hi-viz gear, good tires, quality helmet with pinlock, good to go. 🙂👍🏻
My first rain ride was a pop-up tropical shower while about 20 miles from home. I had some rain gear but it was not riding gear and I was soaked when I got home. Better gear and a year of commuting later and now it’s just another ride.
Rain riding is okay if you have the right gear i like it here on Vancouver Island we get alot of rain in the winter as long its above plus 5 . You look like u had a blast in the rain good on u !
Doodle, Happy Friday. Rain Riding poses a different set of issues. Damn good video. Have a great weekend
Next week: Why I Practiced wheelies for 7 days straight and still can’t wheelie because it makes me uncomfortable.
Next year: why I rode my bike up to the top of Everest
2025 doodle: why I’m touring active volcanoes on dirt bikes
I love it
Haha
@@LenAnderson856 Yea if I want a tattoo on my forearm I've got to shave em both so they match 😜
Here in Bali Indonesia I, like most people wear a rain poncho (with arms). The advantage with this is it's easy to put on mid-trip and you get air circulation. When you arrive at the destination just drape it over the bike to dry off. When I ride here in heavy downpours with my visor down I feel like I'm a submarine captain.
Smart!
Doodle, I have heard about this "rain" phenomenon to which you allude! Here in Coolifornia, we practically beg for rain in Winter, so Summer is completely a lost cause as far as rain is concerned. I sure did like how you seemingly did this video ala stream-of-consciousness, allowing the thoughts to come as they did. Other motovloggers could learn a great deal from watching you.
Yes, I’m in the uk and it rains a lot lol. As long as it’s not too heavy it’s fine and a great confidence builder.
Its good to get the experience of riding in the rain, if anything just in case you do happen to get caught out. I was sick of rain for a while. I had to ride 300 miles home in the rain about a month ago. It stopped being fun after a while lol
Riding in the rain is so much fun sometimes I'll go out of my way just to experience it again. Just make sure you create a waterproof system for your body and enjoy the ride!
I was riding back from Savannah a few weeks ago in the rain. The rain wasnt the bad part. I hit 30+ mph gusts and had one blow me all the way from 1 side of the lane to the other in half a second. Then I had a 60+ gust hit me from behind. It felt like I was sitting at a stop light. That was the scariest ride i've had in 30+ years of riding. I pulled off the next exit and rode back roads the rest of the way home. it added about 2 hours to the trip.
Been there. I was in the moun-tans :) years back. I came out into the gap on a ridge and dam near got blown off the road into an overlook.
Dayum!!
"Riding withdrawal" my new favorite saying. I just got back from Sturgis. Rained every day and 8 of the 12 hr. first days ride. Way too many people to enjoy the area so I left Sat. morning, at least I spent 7 days there. Good rain gear and rain x or bugslide on the visor and lights. I wear 8" Timberland Pro waterproof work boots when riding anyways. Question- is there a neck garter that's waterproof and comfortable? That is the only place I get wet.
Such a good video, recently had my first heavy rain ride n like you I love it but then the cold rain hit after I was soaked, my summer mesh jacket didn’t work great. New wet gear incoming 🏍✊🏻 Keep The videos coming 🎥😃
On the west coast of Tasmania we get 2.5mts (approximately 8ft) so rain riding is a must. The main problem is moss on the road due to lack of vehicles makes for pretty slippery conditions some of the time cheers
You are awesome doodle! Love these videos of you challenging yourself. Have you considered doing long distance trips as a challenge series? I'd like to take a few long distance trips myself
Spent 6 months at Ft. Benning, I remember those downpours. Was scared driving my car. I never liked riding in the rain mostly because of the cleanup afterwards.
My first experience riding in rain was memorable; I was unprepared for it; Just had flannel jacket, jeans, helmet and work boots and rode maybe 45 mins so time I got home, drenched needlessly to say and literally poured water out of my boots.
YAY now we both look like Neon astronauts =P Glad you found the color you wanted. Kinda cool it matches that bike a bit. Stay safe out there =)
Hate riding in the rain. Even your underware get soaked. lol Nice new bike. Those arms at 4:27
I ride year round in Britain in all conditions . Visibility is my biggest problem in the rain and dark when it’s cold but I get through somehow . And flooding and black ice lol. It’s not always so much fun but I like challenge .
I am not particularly fond of riding in the rain but having done it I have to say proper rain gear make a huge difference.
Hey 👋🏻 I’m in the U.K. (Scotland) it rains…but not to the extent people think it does. I’ve been riding nearly 40 years and I still try and avoid rain! I absolutely hate it. But being British I do have to accept it’s going to happen and probably while I’m riding 😃
Howdy doodle rain is a constant thing in the UK a good set of sport touring tyres and watch the wet leaves and manhole covers and it's totally fine 👍
I'm ok with a moderate rain. My MSF class was held in the rain and I felt comfortable having started in dirt/mud and riding off road in different conditions. But I would imagine once it became torrential and visibility was drastically reduced, I would pull over and wait it out. Still have never commuted rain or shine so always had the luxury of waiting it out/calling it quits and drying off at home rather than the office. Dedicated rain gear would be mandatory then. Being in the Northeast, I would try to fit in all the riding I could before it got too cold or snowed. Sweating doesn't faze me much as long as I can stay relatively cool and certainly hydrated.
It rained the entire weekend I did my MSF class (in Northern Va.). None of us had proper rain gear. One person quit on the first day because they couldn't deal with it.
😅
In my personal experience. I use water proof set from frogg toggs. They have high vis and reflective gear with a muffler shield.
This is awesome
What I hate more is tar snakes in the 100* plus days on bends in the road, especially on the interstate at 85mph loaded down with camping gear. First the front washes out then the rear. And it takes a few seconds for it to scrub off the tires.
I think I only road in the rain once before the other night, I avoided riding in the rain. The other night had no choice I wanted to go home from work so I had to ride in the rain and a windshield that you have to look through and face shields on helmet make it rough, specially when on coming traffic lights glare through the rain covered windshield.
Greetings from the UK…learnt to ride in November and in the rain…and although was scary it gave confidence in rain later on…and strong winds…just taking it easy and watching out for drain covers and leaves etc…snow and ice though?.. nah… nice vid. Thanks.
Used to ride in Bali at night during rain season on Yamaha XMAX. No accident even I had.
Love the new helmet, people should be able to see you more. Here in Houston, TX you still have accidents because people aren't looking out for cyclist.
New subscriber here. Your reaction when you almost picked up the crushed snake ! I freaked out a bit too but then I laughed ! It's like in one you previous videos when you tried to crush a cokroach ! xD
🤣🤣
I hated rain when I had a chrome harley thats why bmw gs 850 is in the cards , nice banana suit awesome video as always
Have done this! (Panama's rainy season!)
Can confirm: at least 50% of UK riding is in the rain. RST textiles are very affordable and have kept me entirely dry so far.
The snake.....! LOL i cant stop laughing... i would have the same effect lol
HORRIBLE!!!!!!!
First and last time I was rain riding, I was freezing cold from being soaked. Yes, I wasn’t wearing protective gear, other than helmet and gloves. When I got interested in motorcycles, late 80s and 90s, I saw a lot of brits ride in the winter in England. I was like “WHAT!”!
Yup!
Looks challenging but very interesting. I thought riding a motercycle in the rain would damage any bike but idk if I’ do that when I finally get to ride on a motorcycle myself but maybe when I’m very experienced loved the vid 😃
It’s always a challenge. I get rained on here in Florida all the time.
Did an unexpected 2 hours in the rain got completely soaked but it was a learning experience
Well done riding in the pouring rain as can be scary when the tyres slip around especially riding heavy cruisers / tourers. I hate it when it's so heavy rain you have to use your left hand on your visor as a wiper blade. Ps Maybe an Astronaut 👩🚀 helmet is the way to go to keep all your hair dry.
Rain? That aint rain. That, is liquid sunshine! ☺
🌧 ☀️
The rain part is actually not bad and minor. My biggest issue is cars kicking up the road grim and cloud your helmet visor to the point that you cannot see. I think that is the most dangerous part. Therefore, I avoid rains at all cost and find place to hide immediately if I ever get caught.
Hi Doodle!😊
Rode up to Montana from Dallas to go see my sister. Job done, time to spare, what else is there t do around here? Mt Rushmore!
Set out to Mt Rushmore. Ran into the fiercest rain i've ever been in. Was cold in just a few minutes with puddles/ pools developing in my boots.
Stopped at Walmart and had to buy some cheap waterproof boots and socks. Wet feet suck!!!
I have socks made of bamboo and wool. Have a pair more that are hunting socks, also with wool. Then you will not get cold even if the socks are wet.
With a 2 piece, you NEED a anorak/pullover so the belly pool doesnt seep through the zipper as it only has quarter/half zip 🤓
Awesome!..
Rain riding is awesome. I used to love getting caught in rain while commuting.
The only bad part is when the rain turns to hail. That's not awesome or fun. :(
Just need good all weather tires and then light to moderate rain is no problem.
We have taken many motorcycle trips in the rain. Proper gear is essential ! Most of the older bikes we had did not have a "rain mode" like a lot of newer bikes now have. Part of the adventure, right?
Ok, anyone besides me watch the snake scene at least three times?? :) That was so funny!
I avoid riding in rain because here in Florida, rain means thunderstorms and several riders every year are killed by lightning strikes.
Not sure I'd describe riding in the rain even in British summer time as like someone has turned the air con on,I'm always waiting for my 100% waterproofs to let me down and depending on the level of rain they sometimes do,in my youth I never bothered wearing gear so if I got wet i got drenched,I'll leave that to your imagination, but I had a few journeys where I'd be totally dry or at least almost on arrival which was nice.Give me sunshine anyway day of the week and with your headline it sounds like it's time to build an ark, nevermind jumping on a bike, but good your over that fear....snow next?
Hi Doodle, great to watch and see you are doing so well, sorry if I should know, is that a engagement ring, looks nice :-)
It’s a wedding band 👰🏽 🤵🏻♂️
Waterproof your everyday gear then it's not an issue if you get caught in unexpected rain. You can use spray on water proofer. Also, consider waxing your visor. It makes it easier to clean, and if you use a good quality hydrophobic product wind is enough to keep it clear of water while your riding.
I guess it's good to know how to ride in the rain just in case, but I'm not going out of my way to ride in it. I'll still be trying to avoid it whenever possible.
I remember riding in the rain years ago and approaching an intersection, had to brake as traffic lights were changing. While being gentle with my front brakes (I have a phobia with it locking, this was during non-ABS days), my rear brake started locking which then caused me to sway. Managed to stay straight and upright but had to overshoot the intersection. Thankfully, car crossing in front of me saw me and let me through. Scared the %$^# out of me. Need to practice more though. With ABS now, it must be a lot more stable and safer.
Doodle Drip 🌧️ on a motorcycle 🏍️🤣 nothing wrong being a Drip🌧️ Doodle 👍
🤪
Your dead snake b-roll cracked me up. hahahaha
I think probably the most important thing in rain riding is TIRES. TIRES TIRES TIRES. Maybe the best tire for all-around and wet riding has been Michelin Road 5.
+1 for the Michelin Road 5s
It's not the tires that are bad, its always you the rider, in 99,99%. You are probably using about 40% of the tires/bikes potential. Even on a track, you cant out perform your bike.
@@Gismo3333 There's no riding actually possible unless the rubber contacts the road. That happens more often with great tires.
In Phoenix, it obviously doesn't rain much. If it did, I think I would probably enjoy it. But when it's just heat and humidity - it's just oppressive, and nasty.
good talk! i use progressive 😎👊🏼
Excellent Carolyn👏👏👏 great info, have you got a preferred tyre you use for the bike? Your camera skills are getting better and better well done 👏👏👏👏👏🥰🥰😎😎😎😎😎
I just use whatever my shop or manual recommends 😋
