    Aspergillosis infection of the ear is usually associated with diabetes mellitus, profound long lasting neutropenia or patient is otherwise immunocompromised. The exudate on your slide looks like Aspergillus Fumigatis which is more severe than the more usual Aspergillus Niger. If not treated, it can lead to bone/cartilage erosion and severe complications associated with that. The most effective treatment for this type of fungal infection would appear to be 1% Voriconazole drops, after extensive debridement has been carried out. It’s important to note that it’s not the easiest of fungal infections to treat, and it usually indicates another underlying health issue. It’s also important to check whether patient has been receiving long term steroid treatment. Good luck, and I hope the patient makes a swift recovery.

      @dreaminlayers 2 роки тому +27

      Good information! I was thinking it was cing back too easily to be just the basic Aspergillus, and we don't know if he has any other underlying conditions, but I'm willing to bet yes.

    Thank you for the update, aspergillus is carried by spores, we breath them in , they land on us, they love damp nooks and crannies like the ears, sinuses and also the lungs. I lost my Father to aspergillus which he breathed in, he was on a lot of medication for it, they even cut half his lung away but the teeny fungus branches had invaded most of the lung. I hope the patients Doctor treats this aggressively sooner rather than later. Was fascinating seeing the fungus under the microscope .

      And there can be loop holes too. Such as going private to get a diagnosis, then finding that you can’t get the drugs you need on an nhs prescription so have to pay whatever the pharmaceutical company want to change. And of course the medical insurance industry is very different here so there is generally not that back stop either. So you might know what is wrong and what you should be doing but not be able to do something about it.
