Great stuff! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! You have helped me so much. I did the same thing when it came to what kind of hammer I was using no wonder my stamping isn't coming out right. Back to the craft store I go...! Thanks again. Isn't it so awesome that we are always learning?
Marcy Lundy I totally agree! I've learned so much more since filming these. I wish I had more time to make more videos to share all of the new tips!
Thank you so much! This helped so much
Thanks so much for this awesome advice!!! I'm choosing this as a hobby for myself and freaking out at the cost of certain font sets lol!!
Very helpful!
So grateful that I started watching you're videos FIRST, because you're so right, when you mentioned how expen$ive this hobby can get. Thank you!!! xo
Glitterbomb! You're so welcome!
I too love and prefer the screw down hole punch. The other type holds my metal hostage for far too long. So difficult to free the piece.
A tip to prevent marring is to punch the hole punch plier through a tiny piece of cardstock/business card or pro polish pad to cushion the impact essentially. To remove the bur, you can use a small file filing away from you (they don't file both directions).
You could also use a finger nail file (nothing fancy) which comes in a couple of grits and you can use that in multiple directions. Plus they are about a dollar for a package of two. Handy to have around.
Mara Simmons Thank you for the tips! I also recently learned that you can apply a small amount of chapstick to the face of the blank to help prevent marring when using the punch! Doesn't help with the bur, but it keeps the face nice.
Kate, I’m new to stamping, but have some experience working with sheet metal. My suggestion for nicely removing the burr left on the back by your pliers-style metal punch is to get a small set of countersinks for metal. You can choose the countersink bit that best suits you purpose, and twist firmly by hand to get rid of the burr. I’ve used this approach many times to remove bits after drilling holes in sheet metal.
Darwin Schierer thank you for the tip!
Very helpful! I started this hobby a few months ago for my online business and it has definitely been an epic journey. Although, I started with and still use a chasing hammer and I get great results. I'm working on an old kitchen island made of marble with a bench block that has four little rubber feet under it. I mean I'm no pro here but my impressions seem to be just fine with the chasing hammer! Maybe it's the surface I'm using?
The hammer! I bought TWO stamping sets with blanks chains letters blocks and both had those hammers I would have never figured this out lol thank you!
Hi Kate. A tip on removing burrs on holes is to use a drill bit that is larger than the hole you've made. Hold the bit in your hand and place the drill bit onto your hole (just like you were going to drill a bigger hole) and gently turn it in the direction you would to actually drill a hole. Takes a little practice but it works. You can also use a countersink drill bit. Both are cheap and should be available at any good hardware store.
Murray Rothbard Thanks for the tip! I now use a power punch and love it. I put some chapstick on my blank before punching the hole, to prevent any marring. It's great because it will punch through really thick metal with no problems at all.
Thank you so much ma’am❤️
tayvon paris you’re very welcome!
THANKS! 😊
A great video! This will definitely save me $ b4 I embark on making jewelry!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Hi Kate Thanks for the tip. I just tried to use a sandbag under my steel block, for me it's makes a world of difference.
Charles Friezo I would love to hear more about that! Was it a difference in your control, or the impression, or deadening the sound? I'm getting ready to try stamping on an anvil that my brother gave to me, and if that will make any difference in my stamping. It has a larger surface area than my bench block, and I'm hoping the taller height will help my back a little.
Hi Kate I have much more control, deadening the blow gives me much more control you will feel it. You also get a much better impression and a lower duller sound. Over all I have much more confidence in my stamping. Hope this helps.
Charles Friezo I'm going to give it a try! Thank you!! 🔨👍🏻
You are welcome.
I recognize something in common with your comments, verbally and in comment posts; the sound. It can’t be that fb loud Jesus Christ. Maybe it’s the pregnancy brain tho idk. Oh by the way I had to turn the sound down, you spoke too loudly. Hahahah JK!
thank you!
i saw on another video to use tape to make straightline and black dots on the tape for letter placement
Hi. You can always file down the metal edge left by the hand punch with some jeweler's files and polish it... Sometimes the other punch has limits on how far in you can punch a hole on a blank. :)
Edith Jimenez that's very true! I personally tried so many different files and buffers and polishers and sanding blocks, and they all left an unfinished look. I am currently using a power punch, which I am loving! You have much more control over hole size, gauge of metal you can punch, how far from the edge you can punch a hole... It will absolutely leave burs and nicks in the metal, *but* if you apply a little chap stick to both sides of your blank before punching the hole, the power punch won't leave a single mark in the metal. Magic!
use a dremel or super fine grit sand paper to get the burrs off/scar off! I used to be a dental technician, metal finisher. you could invest in a small sand blaster as well
You can use a file to remove the burr or sanding paper
Thanks for your video. I wish I could've seen your video before I ordered a kit which included a lot of unnecessary "so called tools"
Grace Emata I hope the video is helpful! Fortunately, most tools are useful for something eventually :) And most tools in the kits are fine for starting and practicing, and you can always upgrade one piece at a time. That's what I do too!
well, I am getting ready to order my first set of stamps and a few supplies. I know whst I want to do..just have to work up the guts to do it- not easy for a 62 year old lady..
Claire Wyndham You can do it! It's so much fun and a great stress relief! And stamping is a great way to be creative, because if you don't like the way something turns out, you can just throw it away and try again. 😉
Where did you order the supplies from?
Go for it! You’ll be great at it and hey you only live once right
Brilliant tips, thanks.
You’re welcome!
Just wanted to point out a mistake about the hole punch. The other screw, the one closest to the handle is used to prevent the tool from closing to far. Which leaves the ring around the hole. Also Riffler files are curved and allow you to file a specific spot with hitting the surrounding are.
Do you have any tutorials on how to get the lettering nice and straight?
dirtrock1 Thanks for the comment! Oh my gosh I was totally wrecked there wasn’t I? I’ll plead pregnancy brain. 😂 You’re absolutely right that the back screw adjusts how far the jaws will close. The front one adjusts how thick of a gauge of metal the tool can punch through. I still hate that thing though. Haha! I never have been able to get them balanced well enough to punch cleanly.
Here’s a video where I mention what I do for straight stamping, but I’ll be making one specifically addressing that at some point. (I talk about it starting at about 4:45.)

Omg this lady is hilarious 😂😂😂
What are some Facebook group that you can join for those learning to make jewelry/metal stamping?
If I am not mistaken the brass hammer you are using is also a "dead blow" hammer, meaning the head of the hammer is filled with sand or some similar material to absorb the shock - not all brass hammers are dead blow hammers, but "dead blow" hammers are commonly made of brass.
I think you’re right about that!
Great video, i now know not to buy the hand punch and go with the good one with the wrench down system to cut holes.
I now actually use a power punch like this one, and I love it. I think the screw down hole punch is great if you’re not doing a lot of pieces, because it’s just so much less expensive. But if you’re punching a lot of holes, the power punch is the way to go and worth the investment.

@@makeitkate3240 Thanks for the tip!! I will have to invest in one now.
what is the size of the tag i mean how much milimetre MM is that?
Hello Kate, thanks for all the great information. I'm excited to make a go of it. I'd like to know about the ball bead chain you show at the beginning of the video. What material is it made from, what is the size of the balls, where do you purchase it? Is that the style of chain you typically use? Also, if you don't mind saying, how much would you charge for the "grow" necklace that you made? Thank you
These are the chains I use:

and
tidd.ly/3s2JrEs
I don't like telling people what to charge, because there are so many variables.
@@makeitkate3240 Thank you for your quick reply!
How can I get a kit for myself when am in Uganda do u have any stores selling the kits in Uganda
What do you call the hole puncher with the screws so I can purchase? I make handmade wire jewelry and want to take it up a notch in Jewelry making.
Betzaida Cajigas Hi there! I believe it's just called a "screw down hole punch." 🙂
This is a hobby you can't do at night or midnight...You'll end up with angry housemates lol
Great video. How do you make the letters black please?
There are special markers they sell that you color over what you stamped with the marker and then wipe it!!!
@@maryangel1745 wow you truly are an Angel! Thank you so much Mary!
Where can you get the rubber block I checked micheals and Amazon no luck what is the name of it thanks I was having problems getting the letter on the metal pieces
It's a rubber bench block. I got mine on eBay for $8.
Like your video, except about the Beadsmith hole punch. You didn't mention the "Gauge Guard", (the one closer to the handle). Otherwise the rest was very helpful. :)
hello kate, where can i buy the actual necklace & bracket chains from besides ball chains ? for adults n children
villababeex3 EBay is a great place to find those. AliExpress too. Cable chain is a really popular style. You can also search there using terms like “bulk necklace chain” or “empty charm bracelet” etc. :)
The metal puncher..is there available bigger hole?
kae Mu Look on my other videos and you’ll see that I now use a “Power Punch.” It comes with lots of different sized pieces for different sized holes.
Do you put the colored stamps on silver bead chains>?
Hi Lana! At the beginning of this video you can see a stamped pendant on a chain. Is that the beaded chain you mean? It is one of the kinds of chain I use, and it's called a ball chain. I buy it in a big roll and cut the lengths that I want. I also use stainless steel chains that I order from a shop in China. It's called flat cable chain. Also, when you say colored stamps, do you mean the pendants and charms that I have stamped and then colored in?
uggggggh i didnt buy the hammer.... and i just ruined my blank. thanks for the video! very informative!!!
bourdie1979 Oh no! Well don't worry, we all ruin lots of blanks! It's just how we learn. 😉
Can you just use a glue gun and add glue (from glue gun) to the hammer so it doesn't bounce back?
I don’t think my ImpressArt hammer is brass. It looks more silver in color. Hmmm.
I have been using plyers to "hammer" the stamps in, it takes a lot of times and I am just starting, should I buy a brass hammer?? How much are they??
Lilly Etheridge Hi there - I would definitely grab yourself a good hammer. ;) I personally really like the brass hammers, but a lot of stampedes like one called a "stubby" ball peen hammer. The one I use is I think $17-18 at the craft store, and a 40% off coupon makes it about $10. You can get the stubby hammer (which is not brass) for about $9 on Amazon.com.
*Stampers, not stampedes 😂
Have you ever tried out using a stamping press?
OneSmallBead no, I only stamp by hand.
Where is the best place to buy supplies? Thanks!
Stacey Grimes It really depends on what you're looking for. :) If you're hoping to get some starter supplies to try it out, you can get the basics at a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Joann's. Those places are nice because you can use a coupon! When I started looking for more tools and supplies and stamps, Etsy was my go-to place. I still get most things there. TheSupplyGuy, and MetalSupplyChick are a few favorite shops for design stamps and blanks in small amounts. Beaducation.com has really nice design stamps too. You can search Etsy for metal stamping fonts for a huge variety of styles, sizes, and prices. And you can also join metal stamping destash groups on Facebook if you want to pay a little less and are okay with used. Hope that helps you get started!
Hi Stacey. You can get the plastic girde sheet at wal mart or any place in the embroidery or cross stitching that has the holes in it and cut you a square just enough to cover you punch leave a line on each side. That's what I use to keep from maring my metal blanks.
You can get rid of that bird by using a small metal flat file you can find them in most hardware stores extremely small
Bruce Barnes Yes! They’re really inexpensive at harbor freight. You just have to be careful with the file so you’re not adding scratches when you remove the bur. Someone also mentioned dental files and that’s a great idea too. I just prefer to skip the extra step by using a different punch in the first place. I’m a big believer that less work = more fun 😉
does it matter the size hammer you use for better indentation? New at this!
Joyce Hairston Yes, it can make a difference. The teal colored hammer in this video is from Impressart, and it's perfect for most letters and design stamps that I've used. But I do have some stamps that are larger (like 10-12mm) or have lots of detail. For those, you can still use the 1 lb hammer and hit really hard, or if you have a steady hand you can strike repeatedly while tilting the stamp just slightly in all directions - hitting it 4-6 times. That's called the "tilt and tap" method. But I use a 2 lb brass hammer because there's so much more force behind it. With my big hammer, I can get a good impression in just 1-2 strikes.
Make It Kate thank you so much. I'm using the wooden one you have pictured on the small blanks now. Trial and error I guess... for a newby! lol. I'll be following you and taken notes! thanks again.
Sorry.... one more question. Should I use a sharpie to fill in letters? I had a hard time removing excessive ink.
A sharpie works great for darkening the impressions. If you're having trouble removing it, try using propolish pads to buff it away. Another option is to dampen a piece of old, soft t-shirt in some rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer and lightly wipe away the excess ink. You don't want to use too much or get all crazy with scrubbing it with the t-shirt or you'll take the ink out of the impressions too. If that happens, just use your sharpie again. :) I talk about the sharpie and propolish some in the next few videos if that helps.
Right now, I am really liking Sharpie or Elmer's oil-based ink pens instead of regular sharpie. The ink is really crisp and glossy. You remove the excess ink in the same way you do with regular sharpie.
Make It Kate THANK YOU!
I'm wondering of where did you buy the metal cause I'm interested on making one
Kathia Landaverde Hi there!

You can find shapes here:

Make It Kate thank you 😊
Make It Kate will the metal coins will be on this website?
Do you mean the round discs?
Make It Kate yeah
Hello..!! Which company is good for buying those tools?
shizuko hadland Hi! I have links to my favorite tools in the description below the video, and more tool links below the videos they correspond with. 🙂
Thank you so much.
hi aside from impress ard where do you get other metal stamps and Supplies?
Oh my goodness, so many places! :) I really shy away from Impressart any more. I find that I can get a better quality from other manufacturers, for comparable prices. For stamps, I get a majority of my design stamps from beaducation.com. For fonts, I generally buy them used in Facebook groups that are dedicated to reselling. (They're called destash groups, and they're like a yard sale group for stamping tools and supplies.) For findings like jump rings, I purchase from etsy.com/shop/jewelrytoolbox . Tools and things I'll buy from Amazon.com (I've left links in the description for a lot of those). For round blanks, I prefer 1100 grade, in 16 gauge now. I get those from Jeff's Heavy Metals on Facebook. You just have to do a search to find Jeff's page. If you like even thicker aluminum blanks, etsy.com/shop/blankthat is my favorite. I got pretty tired of just using circles though, and I've ended up opening my own shop for blanks in more fun shapes. etsy.com/shop/makeitstamped . For necklaces, I prefer stainless steel because it's strong and matches the look of the aluminum well. You can find stainless necklaces on ebay and etsy, if you search for "stainless steel necklace chain." Some popular styles are cable chain, bamboo, ball chain, snake chain, and satellite chain. And for power tools like my tumblers, I just go to Harbor Freight.
Whew! Exhaustive list. Haha!
Can you write down your tools names?
In this video, my favorite tools are:
*Impressart ergonomic hammer
*Steel bench block
*Rubber bench block
*Screw-down hole punch
*Ball peen hammer (accidentally called it a chasing hammer. Used for texture, not for stamping.)
Hope that helps!
If it bounces you hitting to hard. Brass hammer are only good fr dead soft metal. Learn the proper use of a chaffing hammer. Go a little bit more on the money and get a 9 lb anvil it is a great investment and you can do so much more with it. 1000 grit sand paper gets off the burr and polishes the metal. Okay she is nee to metal work as she said.
Just learn proper techniques she had no clue and figured out what worked for her. When I put a hole in any metal I use a center punch (2.00) and a drill bit and a drimmel.
You probably already have a drimmel and drimmel bits.
Agreed! Another reason for the bounce was that I was using a plastic table instead of something solid. 🤦🏼♀️ It also took me a long time to learn that was the reason I was getting double images. I only stamp on very soft metals like aluminum and dead soft copper, so the brass hammer is still my favorite choice. Thanks for the comment!
thats actually ballpeen hammer.
I just don't believe her who would hammer on concrete and forward that as good information! 👎 👎 👎
Bert Alicea 😂 Well, I think that it was more one of those things where someone is just trying to help you do a fast, nearly free craft. And that’s great! Just not the best for long-term if you’re really wanting to peruse stamping. Hope you enjoyed the video!
