Finally a realistic Amtrak travel video for the majority of cool adventurous folks who love frequent travel on Amtrak! The sleepers are wonderful if you can afford paying 4-10 times the amount of coach. Roughing it in coach class is is the way to go!
Also what’s nice about taking the train is you don’t need to wait till takeoff to recline the seat, haha! FYI the Sunset Limited has been the only Amtrak long distance train out in the west to only operate 3 days a week. You had great views of the New Mexico desert!
I'm so happy that I found your channel. You do an excellent job of combining narrative that offers specific information, along with demonstration - sped up - as to what the "creature comforts" have to offer.
Gosh you had a nice empty train to enjoy. I wish you had known that you could bring food and drink, especially due to limited dining selections due to (19). I was blessed to be able to do the Zephyr (Chi -Sac) in Jan 20 with good food and a great crew. Please splurge on a roomette, you will enjoy!
@@almaazul1511 Did you take the trains yet and which way did you go- you have several options for getting there but required at least 3 trains if my memmory serves me correctly.
Doing Tucson to San Antonio (2 night stay) then on to New Orleans (3 night stay) in roomette, then back to Tucson in sleeper room in October 2021. If we check luggage in (Tucson and then New Orleans) is it retrieved at distination like an airport baggage claim? Thanks, enjoy your informative videos!!
Great videos...new sub here. ..I'm thinking about a Trin trip from Here in Ohio to Reno for my Slot play..food and travel channel...Trying to decide on a sleeper or coach...I think I want to try the roomette...Thanks for taking us along..
I’m going to Baltimore from California on December and I’m honestly lost because I’m going all alone and I’m 18 😞 Can you help guide me through what to do? I purchased my tickets already
Enjoyable and informative. Thank you. I want to stay overnight at a hotel walking distance to Chicago union station. Would appreciate your thoughts. Keep Amtrakking! The Emeryville, CA (EMY)has a Hyatt House directly across tracks from the boarding platform with a pedestrian footbridge with elevators connecting to station.
What do you mean you did not realize you could NOT bring food on the train. I thought you could always bring your own food on the train. What trains do not allow you to bring food onboard? 04:25
Trying to plan our first Amtrak trip from Dallas to LA. Notice that the Texas Eagle is about 180$ cheaper than taking the TX Eagle/Sunset. What is the difference between the two? Thank you.
Nice videos! I've got a question about the 4 hour layover in San Antonio. I understand the Texas Eagle, coming from Chicago, and the Sunset Limited, coming from New Orleans "meet up" in San Antonio in the middle of the night, but how does that work? I saw one video where they were adding/switching some cars during the San Antonio stop. If I get a roomette on the Texas Eagle, say in Fort Worth, will I keep the same roomette after it joins up with the Sunset Limited leaving San Antonio or will I have to pack up all my belongings and relocate to a new roomette on a new car during the four hour layover. Additionally, I'm not all that thrilled about having to spend fours hours in a semi-deserted train station in the middle of the night. Can you just stay in your coach seat or roomette during the layover if you choose, or are you required to de-train and re-board on a new/different train four hours later? Thanks in advance to anyone that can answer any of these!
Sorry so late response but you will stay in the same roommate and if one the train when they connect you will feel a bump when they connect and then one of the employes annoucce welcome Texas Eagle to our train and then you will be almost leaving the station.
Hi - Which hotel did you guys stay at on that trip? I'm about to go on the same route in Feb. and making plans. Are there many hotels within walking distance from the New Orleans train station? Thanks
No, there are not that many, well we did end up walking about a mile though, but I wouldn't call it walking distance with luggage! We stayed at the Troubadour I think. It is best to just plan on taking a cab.
There are microwaves for passenger use, the seats facing the window are in the observation car, it’s like a lounge. You can go in there anytime you want. Sometimes they assign you assign and sometimes you can pic. I think it depends on how full it is.
Can we get our seating tickets in advance or do we need to wait until the day of the trip to get the seating at the counter assigned. Also can we check a bag in for our next train if we have a lay over so as not to walk around the town with a rolling carry on, if so can we have access to the bag later in the train route? Or once it is checked we have no access until we debark? Thank you we are doing a 8 day trip from El Paso to New York then to NC to New Orleans then back to El Paso. All on coach and no hotels, just max 12 hrs lay over in New York and New Orleans. Are we going to die by the end of this odyssey? Me and my daughter bought the Rail Pass. Please help. Thanks love your videos, your an inspiration.
I have a bad spine and deal with a lot of pain by sitting . I could not take these long distance trains. 40 hours on a train when I could fly in 3.5 hours is the only way I could go. The train would kill me.
I've got to tell you, for some of us, that one-note, speeded-up part is not cool. Human beings, telling and showing the details of the trips, is much more valuable to a traveler-to-be, who needs that kind of information. I think you probably do the other to make your videos seem cooler, "snazzier", but to some of us, it's hard to endure. Not trying to be mean, but telling you how it affects some of us (not all, I'm sure). The informative video is much better. Also, giving a clue about the locations of video is really helpful. Editing it, with views, as you come to them, on the trip, is very helpful, too.

Thanks so much. I will be taking this wonderful train very soon from LA to New Orleans.
Even though y'all have a roomette, get a travel blanket and pillow for each of you! And travel with your snacks! 😉😉
Very important items!
Thank you .We are doing this same travel in November.

thank you for this vid!
Interesting video, have a good day, my friend! ❤️
I am embarrassed to say... I prefer Covid Amtrak. Sixteen years ago my family took the Zephyr to Denver and back to Chicago. Coach was filled!
Thanks, the video, travel lists all I plan to take. This year I am taking the Empire Builder, next year i will be taking the Sunset Limited.

how do you record the video in 2x speed?
We use a GoPro that has a time lapse mode or we just speed the video up in Adobe Premiere if it is regular video that needs to be faster.

We have some info on the Chicago hotels on our blog at: www.groundedlifetravel.com/amtrak-empire-builder-route-guide/
Just the Emervville elevators are gross for going to the hotel by foot.
Are the fees lower during Covid??
I don't think they have changed, but, there is a 2 for 1 sale on coach right now and they have other sales from time to time.
