The thing about "Invincible" is that it's not so much a deconstruction of the superhero genre like "The Boys" or "Watchmen" as it is simply an actual superhero show, only R rated. The fact that many characters are obvious "copies" of existing DC characters is deliberate, often to make you subconsciously expect them to be the roughly the same and then give you a plot twist, like with Omni-Man, the Superman analogue. Seeing him slaughter the Guardians of the Globe and get his ass kicked in the process is so shocking beyond all the graphic violence because you'd simply never expect that from Superman and the Justice League.
I think we've seen so many timelines of superman going bad that we expect it from these superman esq characters

@@izrael820 this story actually is one of the earliest versions of that trope. (I won't say its the first, but it predates Injustice and the boys)
There's a couple deconstructive elements, it's just not the main focus. Little moments like "I guess glasses and a haircut aren't enough to hide you identity like in comics".
Robert Kirkman (who also made The Walking Dead) wrote the comic book of Invincible and this was before The Boys (i mean the comics)
RK wrote it when he was just frickin 23 years old.
I get that the Boys came out first as a show, but the use of violence and gore between the shows are used for very different reasons. In The Boys it's wanton destruction, they don't answer to anyone and they're not held accountable for it, hence the "villains" trying to kill the heroes. Invincible uses gore and violence to reflect weight and impact, that when a super-powered being does go all out there are consequences to throwing a punch. When they fought the Maulers, they all pulled their punches, compared to Omni-man where hit and blow they were drawing blood.
Im glad the invincible comic came out 3 years before the comic for the boys
Also The Boys plays violence off as dark humor, like the bomb in Translucent, Homelander being lazy, the whale scene, ect… Whereas Invincible violence is portrayed more brutal and serious.

Underrated aspects of red rush's death was his limp broken wrists and how he experiences time more slowly

This show was SO MASTERFULLY done! Literally every reaction I’ve seen so far was the exact same genuine horrified surprise even when they were suspicious!
Bout time you realized this was a good show based on one of the best comic runs ever. Yall not ready for how epic this story is and how youll be pressed to name a better comic book story once its all over.

I'm going back and rewatching these, and I have to say this show does some things so well. Can't wait for S2.
I think the animation style is very deliberate. It's supposed to evoke older 90s Saturday morning superhero cartoons. It's a little janky in the same way the original Spider-Man or X-Men shows were.
Comic Book companies create pastiche characters all the time. Marvel has around 6-9 pastiche characters based on Superman alone. Characters which are still being written in comics today. What separates them is how their characters develop and change over time, alongside obvious personality differences. The same goes for Omni-Man, as there's obvious references/influences from Superman, but it really ends at having three similar powers (Kryptonians on Krypton don't have powers because they require energy from a yellow sun), having a cape and being born on an alien planet & coming to Earth. Other than that, Omni-Man is nothing like Superman, as you'll find out. But of course, the Guardians of the Globe are intentionally based on the Justice League, for humorous purposes.
Oh to comment on the Superman storyline, in the comics, Superman was sent away from Krypton because his parents wanted to save him from the planet explosion. As of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Goku's parents also sent him away because his father Bardock believed Frieza was planning to kill off the Saiyans. Superman and Flash also have shown under certain writers to be able to travel faster than light and reach what's called "Immeasurable Speed", a term to describe fictional characters moving so fast they can appear any time and any place, greater than "Infinite Speed". So, they're pretty fast depending on the writer.

I'm going to have to watch The Boys sooner or later because everyone keeps bringing it up in relation to Invincible for being about superheroes and being on the same streaming platform. I only ever talked to my brother about Invincible when I read a bunch of it a decade ago, so all my reference points are different, lol.
Edit: "How did they get away with this?" Well, as you now know the fate of the Guardians, I guess it's fine to tell you that DC, Marvel, and other publishers that put out cape comics do this all the time. When Grant Morrison wrote Multiversity for DC Comics two of the universes featured were basically Marvel and Ultimate Marvel. When the multiverse was dying in Jonathan Hickman's run on the Avengers for Marvel one of those universes had a Justice League pastiche in it. Even with no death involved there are countless characters that are basically "Batman and Superman, but not DC" like Apollo and Midnighter (The Authority (I guess Wildstorm got absorbed by DC, huh)), Hyperion and Nighthawk (Squadron Supreme/Supreme Power), etc. I mean Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel by Fawcett) was basically a magic-based Superman that got bought up by DC. Similarly to Shazam, Viltrumites in Invincible have flight, strength, speed, and nigh-invulnerability, but no eye beams, x-ray vision, or ice breath as far as I can remember.

DC and Marvel actually ripped off a lot of heroes and villains. Image comics was created by a bunch of artists and creators who were tired of it. There may be similarities between some characters. But they are rip offs. Just because marvel and dc have made bigger name brands doesn't mean they did necessarily in a legit way.
Don't write off these characters or their stories based on biases for heroes you know well. The truth is much more grey

Those really aren't copy/paste characters. It's not like every single comic character with super speed is just a Flash ripoff. There are dozens of characters like that. They all just had very basic super powers that a lot of other characters have.
I mean they are ctrl C ctrl V characters... but that's the point. It's done so that ours brains immediately think "oh, this is just like DC," but then you're hit with flying intestines.
I feel like the title to this episode should have been "Wait For It..."

I love your channel, but c’mon guys. “That horrible Superman movie where he flew around the world to turn back time & bring back Lois Lane?” That was THE Superman movie- “Superman: The Movie.” The first one. Admittedly, the “turning back time” stuff was extremely hand-wavy, but outside of that, it is an EXCELLENT film.
