- The video of this show was sent to me by someone who wished to be identified as "EAB." They sent it to me on the condition that I would only post the Nightmare Cinema portion of the video on UA-cam, which I felt was completely fair. I must be a Dream Theater n00b, because all of these years, I did not know there was a video of this show. I thought there was only an audio recording.
I think Portnoy enjoyed this the most just because he got to move and walk around stage for once.
Oddly enough, I was just thinking about Portnoy's demeanor in 2010. He looked super bored and "over it" at those shows, always standing up behind the drum kit and pushing the tempo.
“For once” like he didn’t run this band like a dictator. Omfg 😭
@@v2300 The OP is clearly talking about concerts, where Portnoy is cooped up behind the drum kit. They're not talking about his outside-of-concert life.
@@DTArchive I believe that was the year they supported Iron Maiden during a summer US tour, which is unfortunately the only time I've gotten to see DT so far. I caught them at their Denver stop on that tour at what was then the "Comfort Dental Amphitheatre", lol.
I was sitting to the left of house next to where the sound guys were and managed to snag Mike's autograph during Maiden's set since he was standing there watching it. I also happened to be sitting right in front of Frank Solomon and ended up having a bit of a discussion with him in between the DT and Maiden sets. One of the people he was in attendance with I think was some music industry figure and he ended up giving me his backstage pass, though by the time that happened the time frame to meet in the specified area had already come and gone, so I missed out on actually getting to use it 😭
@@canman87 DT played in Denver on August 26th, 1998 at that venue, but I'm pretty sure they were opening for Deep Purple and ELP, not Iron Maiden. I've contemplated posting that show because the audio quality of the recording is not bad.
Derek channeling his inner Navarro
Drove up from Indianapolis to Chicago and got to experience this. Big Wreck opened.
Also, December 9 is my birth day. Thanks for all the archival work you do!
If you are not aware, I have a recording from the Chicago show on my channel: ua-cam.com/video/KjQE-BU2UMQ/v-deo.html
Imagine this nowadays. Jordan on Guitars!! (You know he plays really good these days)
so ttrue!!
I'm really hoping they write some new music to allow Jordan to show his new guitar chops. I still want him on keyboards ultimately, but let him have some fun.
@@Yellow_Leader I could see it. They could have James play some simple ambient stuff on the keys while Jordan and John play some two-part guitar sections. He already did it during Octavarium on the Score DVD (there are a couple shots where you can see him in the background playing another keyboard out of sight of the crowd), when Jordan was playing around with the continuum and lap steel guitar in the intro.
_DT for lifevarium! 🍾⚓🚀🌒🪐_
Saw them do this in ‘97 Irving Plaza. So awesome.
Awwww myung play keybords .333
Wow, this takes me back! I was there! Definitely as much fun as I remember.
Great job, as always!
Success, bro!
They’re just Perfect Strangers!
Too cool. I'd love to request they do this at their next tour, but I kinda don't think they will. Hope I'm wrong
Wish I had enjoyed Derek more during this period. Seems like such a fun dude! Was too stuck on "he's not like Kevin" and FII not being proggy enough.
Hermoso!
Awesome
Myung: No way 😂 6:01
Derek wearing platforms is fantastic 🤣🤣🤣
They did this in Philly a few weeks after this. Pretty fun!
You're referring to the show at the Theatre Of Living Arts, right? At that one, they did Nicky Lemons and the Migraines, which was subtly different than Nightmare Cinema, but yes - I see what you mean.

My bad. It was actually in '98. They played this and a bunch of other covers. They also played Hell's Kitchen for the first time live and messed it up which was very endearing. They played O Holy Night and Labrie just blew the freaking roof of the place. Awesome show.
@@grandchester Oh - you're talking about the one on December 27th, 1998. There's an audio bootleg of that show called Acoustic At The Electric Factory, and it looks like you're correct that it was a Nightmare Cinema performance because the .txt file for the bootleg says:
"There's also a rare rendition of "Hell's Kitchen", a short, impromptu jam of Led Zep's "Rock and Roll" and Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" at the end of "Hollow Years", and a surprise return of NIGHTMARE CINEMA on "Perfect Strangers"!
I saw this played live in San Antonio, Texas around the same time. What was even more hilarious is that their booking managers had them play at a small, majorly country dance hall named "The Bluebonnet Palace". That was so ridiculously weird to see them play there.
🥁🎸🎹🧑🎤 😆😆🤣🤣 😭😭
There's an audio recording of that. See this video:

Everything up through Walk This Way is sourced from a different show (Lubbock, Texas 1998).
@@DTArchive Thanks
🤘😎🤘
Perfect Strangers (Deep Purple)
Great. They did it with SOA recently, if I remember well
Petrucci is playing exactly the same as Aquiles Priester
i hope they will do it again since portnoy is back HAHAHAHA
Jordan on Guitar is gonna smash it
well he did play live on guitars intheir LTE tour "when the keyboard breaks" he did very well tbh@@Cestariarts
Hopefully Labrie on drums 😂
@@pippodreamlabrie plays drums
@@zummazummabaccala yes he does, nowadays probably better than how he sings, hence the suggestion 🙂
Mike Portnoy: I’m gonna hit he strings of this strange guitar because nobody can hear it. 😏🤣
Parece que los que están encerrados con sus instrumentos son los que más se mueven en el escenario
petrucci is good drummer yeahh
All I hear is the hi hat on the drums. I can’t hear the kick, snare, etc.
yup. probably the low quality recording. im sure u could hear it there better lol
@@greenbackz I'm sure it was fine in person. Just wondering why it wasn't picked up by the camera microphone or if you knew why. Thanks for the response.
Hi hat is definitely dominant, but I can hear the kick and snare in my headphones
If you compare with other Nightmare Cinema recordings, it seems to be a feature of John P's drumming that he doesn't hit the snare very hard.
@@caelmcleish1212 With regular speakers, the kick and snare come and go, but are hardly noticeable. Toward the end, they become a bit more audible.
James could have played drums too
wasn't the story behind this that the band was more or less over in their minds at this point and they were screwing off a bit?
Damn Portnoy had no chill
He had The Chill Of Winter, my dude.
dude myung is great on keyboards...petrucci needs to stick with the guitar tho' haha
Since LaBrie has drum abilities, I think they should have done Petrucci on vocals and LaBrie on drums.
@@DTArchive Since the recent performances of James they should definitely do it! 😂
@@DTArchive Screw that, get Myung on the mic 🤣
lmao yeah, petrucci doesn't know how to play but myung is trained
@@canman87someone hasn't heard dance of eternity
