Whoa. I never seen this race in its entirety, only short clips of him celebrating to the finish. Great upload

It was foolish of Carl Lewis to intentionally slow down some 20 meters before the finish line - he was on the way to a super world record over the 200m!

Why oh why did Carl close it down before the finish line? Woukd definitely of broken the world record if he’d gone flat out to the tape

Cause he was an arrogant show off

He has since said he regretted not running flat out through the line but didn't realise how fast it was at the time.

with current track and shoes, he would run sub 19.6

Pietro Mennea's world record had a charmed life! Carl here and Mike Marsh in Barcelona would both have broken it had they not eased up and I think Lewis would have broken it at the '84 Olympics had he not been running into a slight headwind in the final and run 19.80.

Мировой рекорд для равнинных стадионов. Прежний - 19.96, принадлежал Меннеа и был установлен в 1980

20.50 in 1984 is the closest Larry Myricks ran after those 20.03.

Elszalasztott egy világcsúcsót mint Mike Marsh 9 évvel később a Barcelonai Olimpián.

So many athletes were on drugs back then smh. I'm just reading about it now. Apparently steroids were legal in athletics until 1975 and were openly talked about before then at the Olympics and other events. 35mg of Dianabol a day was the typical regimen of athletes like Valery Borzov in the late 60s and Ben Johnson had been using steroids since 1981 according to a couple sources including Charlie Francis (who was also a top sprinter in Canada in the 60's and 70's and his book "Speed Trap" details what was going on back then and how steroids enabled athletes to make it through the rounds at championships without soreness and fatigue).

The only drug test Lewis ever 'failed' was when he was found with 6ppm of stimulants before the Seoul Olympics, a level that only warranted 'further investigation' not a ban. The IAAF accepted that the stimulants were accidentally ingested and the level Lewis tested at wouldn't even count as a positive test under today's rules.
