Summer is, unfortunately, winding down and school is about to be back in session. But that doesn't mean the sun is taking a break. In fact, it's warmer than ever here in California. So Amy wanted to find out: what is the BEST and WORST sunscreen to protect her skin from the blistering sun? We're using different Vacation sunscreens, such as gel, spray on, stick, and even milk (ick). Who will WIN this sun screen test? Watch to find out!

The fact that Mat still has the checkerboard pattern kinda cracks me up
He has "scars" from his theory days.
Mat might have left the channels but the channels haven’t left Mat.
I predict that six years from now Matt will return and say that the checkerboard has finally gone away.

Tbh it is part of the advice from dermatologists and other doctors, that the best protection is being covered. Maybe not necessarily by becoming a tape mummy, but long sleeves and pants/skirt are your best bet.

@kimbrolyy true but unlike sunscreen, clothings barely wears off throughout the day meaning the protection is more consistent, which is another thing doctors will tell you is a crucial aspect of sun protection
Can you test different bug spray so I know what keeps away those nasty mosquitoes the best?
From my experience, deep woods is the best common one.
Yeah, deep woods. Take it from a person that lives in the middle of the woods on a farm.
From my experience, Mugga is the best, it lasts more than 2 hours and reppels everything expect woman
Try australian tea tree oil - yes its an oil, and it has a strong (but not totally unpleasant) smell - and mosquitoes hate that. Never been bitten when applied that in mosquito infested areas. And at home you can put it in a fragrance lamp helps at home.Or try a camping UV Lamp (insect lamp that zaps the bugs/flies and mosquitos)
I need this to happen because mosquitoes go all over me
The fact MatPat still has the checkerboard pattern is concerning. I hope he didn’t ACTUALLY get skin cancer just so we were properly informed…
Yeah, he should check it out with the dermatologist..

Can you maybe do a theory for deodorant? Which type is best (Stick, spray, gel, etc)? What kind lasts the longest? Which is the most cost effective? Would it be better to use ones just for armpits or full body deodorant? Are unscented ones better than scented? Which are best for your skin when it comes to ache and irritation?
I feel this would be a very useful episode 🩷🩷
Omged i agree and should we use antiperspirant or deodorant or crystal. Like do they even work as advertised. It would be a cool episode
would love this
Yes!!!!
Same!!! I would love this too
Just came from that episode. It was ranked by best to worst smell. Used green tea bags ranked at #5, both versions of Lumi ranked at #6 and #8, apple cider vinegar ranked last, and Speed Stick in particular ranked terribly.
7:33 "Release me from this suffering: Computer too dang hot" I like how the Abort option is pre-selected.
Wasnt expecting the "whole circle" ending, actually amazing, i love it 😂
Now 2 theorists will forever be intertwined by the unique checkered tan
My hubby is a redhead. The stick was one of the worst sunburns he has had! We continually added more, every 15-30 minutes, which is what he does with every other sunscreen. The rest of us used it too, and we all got a burn somewhere and too much sun all over. I will never buy it again!
Did you use it on your face, cause thats what youre supposed to do...
As someone who works as a snorkel guide, in open ocean, I would love to see comparisons between mineral baser and chemical based sunscreens. In maui County all chemical sunscreens are actually illegal to sell or use, and mineral is the only option, as it's safer for our waters.
The mineral based ones gaining popularity has been great for me because I'm allergic to most of the chemical based ones. I'd love to see that comparison, too!
@kkcliffy2952 you should try the raw love brand! It comes in a little tin that last forever! Out of all of the mineral sunscreens, that one has become my absolute favorite! Though. It does have a little bit of a learning curve in how you apply it
@@allieburgess3856 I'll definitely check that out! Thanks for the suggestion
Thanks for the reminder and PSA: Reef-safe sunscreen should always be the default if going into the ocean, folks!
Lab Muffin Beauty Science has already debunked "reef safe" sunscreens, chemical sunscreens aren't harming coral reefs, it's global warming and pollution from agriculture runoff
I've learned from the years, the spray is very inconsistent, the lotion always seems to work the best, but Is the most annoying to apply. Generally the rule i've followed is, if you are going to be in and out of sun, spray is fine. If you are going to sit in the sun, lotion.
This is actually so onteresting to watch. Maybe the sunscreen might be more effective for different skin types. But if theres gonna be a part 3 of this I would like to suggest which sunscreen is best for everyday makeup use.
or skin colors to depending how strong it is maybe we gotta make them do it all over again sunscreen part 3
I’d love a makeup one! I’ve gone through 3. I think I finally found one I like!

I LOVED the touch of Jason getting mad at Amy’s staycation so cute
I'm allergic to the sun, and loved it when I could get 100 SPF sunscreen. Now, 60 is the best I can find. It sucks.
Have you tried ordering it online?
Thats only a 1% difference of UV radiation from 100 to 60, does it really cause that much of a noticeable difference?
Not this being uploaded when I have a terrible sunburn 😂
Can you do a video on how to best wash hair?
Love this idea
Ummm...👀
Maybe for different types of hairs? Like a mini series
AMY NO! HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING FROM MAT?!?!?! DON'T BECOME A CHESS BOARD!!!
She is Jsut becoming striped
she chose zebra
She chose a bad case of stripes
It give me "JOJO HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING?!" vibes
Im middle eastern, i never burned when i was younger, now only my shoulders will burn if im in the sun too long, i need to be better at using sunscreen
Amy should really try out foundation sunscreen. You put it on your face, it applies like foundation, and it looks like foundation. Perfect for beach pictures! I wonder if it really works to the same extent as normal sunscreens though.
I would love to try that myself
for any decent uv protection, u would need a significant amount of it, which i would assume would defeat the purpose of the foundation
6:48
Don't be scared of some grays Santi. They show character and confidence.
I do prefer Mat's more reckless yet also more controlled experiment approach but I understand the safety concerns
The outcome with the stick sunscreen is nuts! I'd assume they'd label it better to not be sued. Yikes.
amy and matt are now bonded via the checkerboard sunscreen ritual
I actually greatly appreciate these episodes, and your sacrifice. This is the most valuable information from a source i fully trust. I see you, Amy, and this is why you're my favorite.
"I'M WORKING LATE CAUSE I'M A THEORIST, MY LEGS ARE BURNT TO A CRISP "

I wanna say I just don’t need sunscreen I have healthy skin naturally🗿
You should see a doctor
you should get your hands on some Aussie sunscreen and then do "swimming tests" to see which is the most water resistant
You can use aloe vera to help with sunburns
17:13 Nowhere on the directions does it say swipes, let alone 4 swipes. "Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours. Use water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating." Those are the exact directions on the packaging shown both in this video and on the packaging I found searching it online.
That's actually pretty interesting, I'll have to look into that. It would be wrong if they actually lied to us.
LabMuffinBeauty did a sunscreen experiment that showed stick sunscreens need well over 20 swipes (I don't remember the exact number) to actually get to the recommended amount of sunscreen.
Edit: oh hey would you look at that it was mentioned in this video!
For those wondering, I found an image of the box as well to see if the directions there are different. While it has a few more disclaimers about sun exposure in general, the directions on the box do not give any indication for "amount of swipes", just the same "apply liberally" wording.
We just use anti-UV umbrellas :p
Wouldn't a normal umbrella do the same job
A lot of UV you get are from reflected light, so the umbrella is only blocking a portion of the UV rays
uv clothing seems the easiest.
Tbh umbrellas and clothing are your best bet at consistency and cost efficiency

Okay but I need to know where Amy got that Jack Skellington cup at about 4:43
the dermatologists I follow here on UA-cam do all recommend stick sunscreen. HOWEVER, only for reapplication.
We have to apply sunscreen every 2 hours for it to be effective, but most of us are too lazy and can't be bothered making a mess with a lotion every 2 hours. In the stick form, it's really easy to reapply. So while they recommend stick sunscreen, they do say to apply a base-layer of sunscreen in the morning in the form of a lotion.
Holup 6:23 did she just call vitiligo virtileego? How in the world did she get that? I have had vitiligo my whole life and have never heard that pronunciation
16:40 Especially with oil in the #2 slot, how do you reconcile the impact of the oil on the card? It seems like there was rejection of a control point without ever actually justifying the validity of the results despite a control failure.
Both the host, old and new, are going to look like a chessboard.
As i might have an alergy to the sun (i get small circular blisters on my arms and chest) i began using one with physical/mineral protector and its so much better
Thank you so much for these episodes. I've been learning so much about sunscreen this summer (at 29, maybe a bit late) and I really appreciate every bit of info I can get. This take is new, I haven't had a comparison on type yet. Thank you.
WE LOVE YOU STYLE THEORY
Phenomenal video. You provided crucial information in an entertaining way.
This is actually super convenient as I am going to the store right now to get some things for tomorrow’s beach trip 😅
If you do get sunburnt you are meant to apply aftersun as that can reduce a significant amount of damage quickly.
Actually sunburn should be treated like any other burn, which means you should have cold water run over the burn for 10-15 minutes, so hop in a cold shower as soon as you can. After the shower, aftersun can be used to hydrate the skin. Repeat every few hours as necessary.
YESS I have been curious about this for soo long thank you!!
The blue masking tape is way funnier than it should be 😭😂
Spray has ended up being my default, because I feel like it can start off getting a bit more coverage as a whole but then I also do massage it in a bit to make sure it really gets everywhere. If you just spray and leave it alone, I feel like sprays don't cover very well at all and it felt almost like common sense to rub it in after you spray. How could millions of tiny dots of sunscreen protect well enough vs making sure to spread them around a little after spraying. Lotions have always been the hardest to apply for me, and seem harder to get a consistent coverage with. And I burn stupidly easy, and feel heat sick really fast in direct sunlight generally.
Oh my god, I've been wanting a part 2 for this for SO long!!! 🥳
Quick sun tip: moving around is also a great way to reduce the chance of sunburn!
Even small motions such as changing your position every so often can help if you dont have proper protection (tho obviously you should use protection even when moving around)
0:41 is i just me or does she sound different? 🧐
Maybe she got a better mike?

Amy you have explained so much about my lack of tanning ability!! I used to tan when I was younger but in middle school I got a really bad sunburn and I’m pretty sure I haven’t tanned the same way since. I’m way more likely to burn now!! Thank you for answering a question I didn’t even know I had!!
As someone who burns easily this episode is for me. I once out 3 layers of sunscreen on my nose and it still got burnt 😭
I’m incredibly pale and got horribly sunburnt on a camping trip, it was so bad I couldn’t wear my shoes anymore, even though it’s been over a year my legs are still a bit red. I hate it.
Sun burned my nose when i was child. Skin was peeling off and showering was a literal pain to do. We spent a week learning how to surf at the beach and by day 3 my skin was not happy. I used lotion 50fps sunscreen but clearly did not reapply every 2 hours as recommended.
So next video, testing aloe vera and sunburn treatments? :D
That sunscreen video with MatPat was how I found style theory!!
One thing to remember about the stick is that it's ability to stick on depends on the temperature of the stick itself. The hotter it is, the easier the application becomes. I'm surprised you didn't bring this up.
If we're doing part 2's to theories, then how about "stain-proof" makeup for sleep to continue from waterproof makeup?
As a fan of legs, I always appreciate "Style Theory" videos like these. 🥰
literally screaming at my computer "YOU NEED TO RUB IT IN" the whole video and I felt so seen at the end. theres no way to avoid touching the sunscreen with any method
The checker board pattern on Matt's back will be a reminder of his experiments and how they failed.
Those eyes are amazing, definitely helped me focus on listening and science. Respectfully, best scientist on UA-cam
7:40 NOOO I THOUGHT THAT WAS MRBEAST FOR A SECOND OMGGGG-
Jesus Matt STILL has the checkered pattern on his stomach that’s actually insane that it’s almost unbelievable (but don’t worry Amy I DO believe you)
I know the spray is bad, but the other than the spritz (apparently not much better), the rest of them are sensory heck.
Style theory idea! Can you do a video on the science around bags under your eyes? Not just what causes them, but what happens in your body to have that effect and ways to counteract them?
My personal worst sunburn was at the local public pool as a kid. Did a lot of lying on the toasty warm concrete around the pool, back facing that mighty star of ours. Ended up with second-degree burns across my entire back. I spent Christmas (Aussie, so warm Xmas is our norm) in the back of the uncle's van watching everyone else run around and have fun. And proceeded to malt skin onto every single surface my back touched for almost a month afterwards. Sunscreen is no joke. If getting burnt tends to reduce our resistance, I'm very glad I don't do much sunbathing these days. Have a feeling I'd burn much worse if that's the case.
4:55 no, the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
My nine year old was nearby when I was watching this, and he literally yelled, "No! The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!" 😂😂 It made me smile.

Personally, my skin is very sensitive and doesn't react well to most Sun Cream, Make Up, any of that stuff. So, I found Nivea (I think) to be the most effective for the rare sun that we get here in the UK.
This is crazy! I've been feeling so influenced to buy stick sunscreens due to marketing, creator recommendations, and what seems like the boom of them on the market. Glad you guys did an actual experiment and have science to back it up!
VIDEO IDEA: If it wouldnt get you demonitised, i would love to see a video comparing different mentrual products based on effectiveness, comfort and safety.
5:32 same dude, that’s been me my whole life 😢

I think this woman was born to host this channel
Attending meetings. Answering emails. Enduring burning heat, loud noise, and bugs. Your version of a "staycation" is completely different than mine! 😆
Cells at Work was used in the animation. Amazing!
As a control I think the same active ingredients and SPF ratings would have been better than the same brand. Formulation with these ingredients seems to be the variable under test, so it would be interesting to see how each formulation (gel, spray, etc) improve or worsen each ingredient (titanium oxide, zinc oxide, etc).
Amy is so adorable! Could watch her all day. 🥰🫰
I love the style theory riff it reminds me of how much I miss the theory theme songs
You and Currently Hannah are my guides for sunscreen now ^^
I have the same pop socket 11:20
as a lotion sunscreen truther, I am SO HAPPY it got first!!
I don't look at the instructions for sunscreens, and I had no idea it was advised to rub in all kinds of sunscreens. But even then the lotion always made me feel more protected and sure that I had applied enough. I'm so happy that in the end I was technically "right"
I use spray, but I apply so much of it. Like a puddle of that is going into my skin and I always rub it on more.
ima bouta get a sunburn that says style theory on my back
I simply am lucky, I don’t burn in the sunlight at least were I live, when I go to somewhere that has higher UV only my toes burn
I also have experienced a very bad burn when I was very young
The package is the problem for stick! It is the same as deodorant.
You can't apply exactly the same amount twice. Because the roller doesn't guarantee 😢
So it could be dryer in one spot and extra moisture in another.
Now we need a brand comparison on the lotions
I was the opposite of you tho! I burned CONSTANTLY as a kid but now i tan more than burn. I definitely still burn but it's not as bad as it was when I was a kid. I burned on a cloudy day sitting by a windows as a kid but now I really never burn
OMG I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY BURN GIRL!! The exact same thing happened to me as a kid, I used to get tan as a kid and around 11/12 I got super pale and now I only burn :(
And yet I'm allergic to all of them...
I wonder if the effectiveness is dependent on where it's supposed to be used on the skin. Some skin is thinner or built different on different areas of the body. Most sticks like that are marketed specifically for the face and neck.
I use stick on my face. 3 to 5 layers, 20 minutes before going out. And if I stay outside, I reaply, in multiple layers, every 1-2 hours
You won’t sue me if I use this as a science experiment right 😅
6:40 I can relate to this. I found my first grey hair today. I'm 16😀
Amy and MatPat are gonna match lol
