On religion: Although SA is a secular country that recognises all religions, it is majority Christian country with more than 70% of people self-identify as such (this includes people who believe in syncretism which is combining different religious aspects). What we do have going for us is that we are generally very tolerant of different religions and one should never assume that someone is Christian, Muslim or whatever, just because of their racial groups. You will find Indian Christians or white sangomas or whatever.
Sangomas, Herbalist (Gedla), Nyangas are not the same. Each has a separate God given gift according to their calling and are guided by the divine spirit.
Our judicial system is more suited to Scandinavia than South Africa. We need to make laws suited to our crime problems. This is why our crime levels are so high. Prison is a retirement plan now.
This is the comment I have been waiting for... You spoke nothing but facts🎯 It seems the correctional services is no more rehabilitating these criminals, they now see it as a retirement plan instead of a form of punishment😫
@Prizzygat 5 star retirement plan unfortunately. There is literally nothing deterring criminals. There is a reason why gulf countries are so safe. It's because of surveillance and harsh punishments.
Also they get shelter, food, entertainment and education for free inside unlike outside where they actually have to work for a living. It is more appealing than discouraging to these folks. Some people who live on the streets do crime on winter so they can get shelter in jail during the winter

SA prisons are more like rehabilitation centre, criminals are offered skills training programmes to assist them to make money when they get outside bcs no company will employ ex convict... Jah way back we come from police brutality bt now we know our rights
Just because people are criminals doesn't mean they are not human anymore, nor that their basic human right should be violated. South Africa may be tolerant and even accepting of non Christian religions, but it is still a predominantly Christian country. Those who tend to mix traditional African religions with Christianity form a very small part of the group that identify as Christian. Most Christians in South Africa are actual Bible believing practicing Christians. There is nothing like a state enforced religion in South Africa. Furthermore, Christians actually have a lot of power and influence in South Africa, whether political or otherwise.
There hundreds of criminal cases everyday. 99,9% don't get televised. Unless, it is believed to be of national interest to televise the case (even that doesn't guarantee a case will be televised). The idea is that we don't want to create a bias against the accused. Because even criminals have human rights.
A quick Google search will help you avoid spreading misinformation. South Africa is a mixture of first and third world country which makes it a second world country. A Second World country is one that falls in between the poverty of developing nations and the prosperity of developed nations. These countries (Turkey, Thailand, and South Africa for example) are growing economically but aren't quite to the level of developed countries in North America and Europe. @@Prizzygat In South Africa we believe in God. Then we choose how to communicate with God. We either communicate with God through the olden ways of our people (traditional spirituality) or allow influences of modern ages (new religions of Christianity and Islam which were imported to us by colonialism). God is not new to Africa. Now on mixing religions (syncretism) is no different than having a main job (God) and 2 side hustles (in this case Christianity and Tradition) to make money (Praise God). Blasphemy is defined as the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things so it's not at all blasphemy to be syncretic. Mind you, I am one of those that are 100% not Christian nor do I practice Syncretism with my family but we believe in the Creator (God) as much as any Christian/Muslim would, we just do it the old way of using Nature (Culture) and our Ancestors (whom we believe are our Angels) to send offerings and praise to the Creator (God). Sangoma is a traditional healer ..a herbalist is someone who can use natural hearbs to heal people but u can be a sangoma who is a heabalist and you can be a herbalist and not be a sangoma . Also u can see spiritual staff and not be a sangoma and also not be a herbalist u be a prophet in your usual terms but an african prophet is called iSANUSE in Xhosa and Zulu ..
I kinda agree with your second paragraph because when someone (a Nigerian) dies they do some tradition rites before burial. They don't care if u were 100% christain or not. Although SA is a secular country that recognises all religions, it is majority Christian country with more than 70% of people self-identify as such (this includes people who believe in syncretism which is combining different religious aspects). What we do have going for us is that we are generally very tolerant of different religions and one should never assume that someone is Christian, Muslim or whatever, just because of their racial groups. It seems the correctional services is no more rehabilitating these criminals, they now see it as a retirement plan instead of a form of punishment😫

Witchcraft (Umthakathi/a witch) is different to tradition (Inyanga/traditional doctor) and definitely different from African Religion (Sangoma/a spiritual advisor no different than a Pastor). Happy to openly answer any questions and won't feel offended. No disrespect to any religion out there by the way
Ppl in SA dont take Christianity that deep ..they can go to church for fun but still do what they were born in as africans ...
The thing is that we believe when u are dead for example you go to yr ancestors and ancestors will need african practice ...u can be 100% christian but when u are dead we know u will have traditional requests when u are dead and we will do those things for you ..
The family must perform some of those rites before they can give the person back to mother earth.
