    Okay. So I practiced this in all 12 keys for minor, dominant and major chords according to the progression for 4 weeks. The next thing I know I had 36 chords under my hands. So I tested my facility and grabbed the chords for Bluesette. I was playing the chords without even thinking about it. Wow! Not bad! Thanks Amimee!

      Hi Aimee. Just follow-up. I want to thank you for all that you do. I started playing piano with your channel and fell in love with music all over again. So much so i created a little something with the help of some friends.. I wrote produced and played keyboards and did vocals on this. On soprano sax is my good friend Quamon Fowler who is a 3rd place runner up in the 2008 Thelonius Monk Jazz Competition.. Just a couple of chords.. You did this!! ua-cam.com/video/XOzNEz4EXqM/v-deo.html

      I certainly don't expect every one to understand what I mean by that, but yes. And being an entertainer all my life, I'm glad you laughed! Mission accomplished lol! But yes, when I hear a melody or a song, I can immediately envision it. And knowing theory for many many years now, she still makes me come at things in new ways. I also love watching Bernstein when he does his analysis of various "classical" compositions. Anything to push us in different ways of thinking about theory in musical terms. And yes, thankfully, I can easily envision what they are talking about usually from a keyboard perspective though I do play many other instruments.

    • @thebigarchive
      @thebigarchive 7 років тому

      BirdsAdventuresInWoodworking Well, I guess it's a good thing it just sounded a bit weird to me haha. I wish I had a good ear for melody/chords but I'm still at the very beginning of the learning curve. But I'm about 50 years younger then you are so I think it's not too bad :)

    • @birdsadventuresinwoodandmusic
      @birdsadventuresinwoodandmusic 7 років тому +4

      You've got lots of time! As a word of encouragement, not only practice your instrument, practice listening and if you haven't studied basic theory, that is the number system, do so as soon as possible and then start to listen to the intervals once you learn how they are named. You can probably do a youtube search and find some video on it. It won't be long before you start to actually know what you are hearing. An interval of a 2nd sounds nothing like a 3rd or a 4th and so on. Once you get to where you can readily recognize that, it gets much easier very quickly. I learned it in my early 20's and it has served me well, though one never stops learning. That's why I like hearing different artists perspective or way of looking at it and relating to it. Aimee is particularly interesting. She is just a natural musical entity and there just aren't a lot of them out there. So I find her very interesting. She always keeps me smiling because she just takes you places you don't expect. Keep studying and practicing though. It's a life long love affair I can assure you!

    • @thebigarchive
      @thebigarchive 7 років тому

      BirdsAdventuresInWoodworking Thanks for the encouragement. I know the names of the keys and I know the major and minor scales pretty well. My ear is still rather bad at recognizing notes/chords though. And I can play a major or minor scale without a problem but when I play chords within the scales I always have problems with the intervals between the notes if that makes sense. And I guess it can be a good thing for some people but for me it's a bit confusing that alot of people explain things differently. But I'm learning everyday so eventually I'll come there :)

This video really showed me however, that I should familiarize with the whole piano, not just specific keys that my favorite soul songs are set too. Overall, awesome video, you're a great teacher Aimee :)

    Aimee, I was young 45 years ago when I was an aspiring saxophone player. I started to take improvisation lessons with a very capable jazz saxophonist (former David Baker student) who asked me on my first lesson to tell him how I thought about improvisation when I saw chords. So, I said that I tried to play notes from the chord, emphasizing the 3rd and 7th. He then told me to use scales, and off we went to all the modes, and whole tone scales, diminished scales, bebop scales, etc. I had put music aside for maybe 30 years, and am coming back to this after all these years. Interesting to see this set of exercises and video, and a similar one on a different channel. As a non-pianist, I would look at a ii-V7-I and play all the notes (1, 3, 5, 7) in root position. I never understood how pianists and other harmony instruments made ii-V7-I progressions sound like they should. Now I (think I) know. Wish you had been my teacher long ago. Ironically, some time ago I was following Carol Kaye's FB site where she repeatedly made fun of people who played "note scales" when improvising. Pretty insightful, and pretty funny.

    What a great place to start getting one of the foundation stones of jazz! The 2-5-1's... ALL of them! Working my way through them, getting them right, naming the chords and the key each time. I want these rock solid, so I don't even have to think about them. Not only are the chords useful as 2-5-1's they are invaluable to have under your fingers for reading lead sheets. Aimee, this is a fantastic exercise in itself. Thank you so much.

    I love this aimee! I actually just picked up a keyboard for the first time in years just the other night so that i could start using the jazz theory i learned on guitar, on piano. I wasn't entirely sure where to start, other than using the 7th in my chords, and practicing different keys but that alone felt too vague and overwealming. go figure that you had already uploaded a video on just what i needed to practice! thanks for the great help, now i can laser focus on what will really help my playing and my understanding of the keyboard.

    I always thought there was a gap in standard music teaching, between the theory of something, and those hidden patterns that result from applying the theoretical understanding.
    You have just solved one of the mysteries around smooth chord changes in Jazz, that seem to be so easy when you watch a professional do them, but not all that intuitive for learners.

    For the longest time, I was doing Root in the left, then 3,5, 7, and 9 in the right. Then flat 7, then flat 3, and finally bring down 5 and 9 and whole step then repeat; basically this exercise with just two extra notes. Today, I decided to try it inversions and my brain felt like it was being bent out of shape, in a good way. Stripping it down to 3 and 7 makes a whole lot more sense to how the ii V I works.

      Thanks Aimee! I learned to play chords in left hand and melody in right from my teacher. He taught a varied list of music types. Jazz, standards, classical pop. I can sight read now at least and we worked through about 100 Beatles songs and a ton of 60's pop. Thats kind of where I live. We did lots of scales but never got really any improv done before my injury. I like jazz as much as Brian Wilson I think and would like to try my hand at it. So seeing you play a lot of chords in your right and some bass notes in your left makes me scratch me head a bit. Enjoy your lessons!

    Aimee, I have been playing piano since childhood by ear, in spite of the fact that I do read music, although for piano, not so quickly. In some ways, I seem to be in the same spot as Kem (sp?). I knew conceptually that 3 and 7 are fundamental, but on sax, flute, piano, and guitar, I can't do the "dice" ii V I thing, and first and second inversions, well, that is really hard for me to figure out without taking forever. You will never know how much I appreciate your total understanding of where so many thousands of us out here live with respect to theory and jazz. I can sometimes play really great colorful and extended/alternate chords, but only by visualizing/remembering the key patterns and muscle memory, which restricts me to one key per song. And it is a gamble as to which key in which I might end up playing different songs. And I can't figure out some songs, even after careful trial and error. It can be quite frustrating, so I end up noodling, playing the same songs over and over ad infinitum. My ear does not always hear the intervals and the extensions, and my ear is not good in the low bass frequencies, perhaps just due to lack of disciplined ear training. I have subscribed to your channel, and hope to dig in and start learning from them. I am not set up to have my keys in front of my screen, so Skype is not practical/possible for me. If I lived within thirty minutes or so from a teacher as good as you, I would be taking individual private lessons. I apologize for such a long comment, but I just wanted you to know that you are actually providing a really useful service on UA-cam. My first task will be to the exercise you are illustrating here, and I am sure even that alone, given my ear, will improve my playing a lot. Thanks for being such a delightful personality and for helping us guys.

The 3rd and 7th are the guide tones which as you show, guide us listeners in experiencing harmonic movement with "No static at all".... Love the "rub" of Maj 7 tones over the V7s. Great stuff Aimee.

    Hi Aimee, I love this exercise. My piano teacher taught me it. Then I watched a video where a guy showed how to apply the 3rds and 7ths to a tune with the root in the bottom like you showed. To build onto this video you made, I hope your next ones are showing us how sometimes you have to invert the third and seventh for the tune in order to easily access the melody note, adding the melody note to the top, chord voicings to use in the left hand, maybe using the tritone substitutions you taught us etc., until you have a full "Misty" song for us. Hint hint! : )

    Hey Aimee , I love the way how you play and when you play you sing pretty much the same notes. Also, how you go step by step. I've watched about a million of your AWSOME videos. My grandpa agrees.

    you are helping us unlock the mysteries of music theory. I just started learning the piano and one goal is to be able to play the same song in different keys, you know, just switch keys on the fly on the piano, and this brief lesson was the best example of how you can begin to do that.

    Thank you, Aimee! First time through was very slow, and I thought "This will take forever", but then I thought to follow the RH thumb and "see" (in relation to the root note) how it's playing the third then the seventh then the third scale degrees of the ii-V-I respectively. Suddenly I'm playing it twice as fast. Next I'm looking at the top note, and "seeing" the seventh then the third then the major seventh. That's really helping. Spelling the chords out loud is just as valuable as finding them with the fingers. It's like when I'm typing I can stop to spell a word quick enough whenever I need to, but when typing at speed my fingers do it from pattern memory. You learn it top down and bottom up until they meet in the middle.

    OMG! This video is eye opening! I love how you simplify the theory and how to get these in your hands, brain and ear! I went through all 12 keys in about 5 minutes and then went and did something else for a while. All the sudden I started hearing "Con stant Cra ving".... in my head and knew immediately it was ii 5 1!!!!! Went to the piano and played it!!! Never been able to that without hours of painful hit and miss. Thank you for putting your knowledge out for us to learn from you!

    Do y'all ever start one of her videos just because you want to hear the sound of her voice for a little while? It's like free therapy, so soothing.

    I think I first watched this in August 2017...about five months ago. It was painful to try this back then. I'm new to piano from guitar. I have practiced daily since then (lots of different you tube videos, 251, noodling, etc.) I did not do 251 only. First I did left hand root positions, then right, then both on some easy facebook tunes (all of me, polka dots and moonbeams, satin doll, willow weep for me). Right hand melody. I found it hard to do two hand chords at first because the root was so low and out of my field of vision for the other notes. anyway, I can now do this at about 80 bpm with both hands. Still feel like I know nothing relatively. Thanks Aimee.
