My plea to indian students is : Please dont go through any consultancies. Most of these are super shady and connect you with blacklisted universities.
If you cant get into a top university, its just not worth it.

Even getting into a top university is not worth it, try getting a job in 2023 you have very little chance at the moment. Besides I would advice Indians who have no direct relatives to sponsor their GC to not even think of attempting US now or ever again in the future atleast for thenext 250 years.

It's frustrating to see people who are trying to coming to this country LEGALLY to pursue opportunities are being deterred like this, while thousands of low-skilled (and quite frankly really unwanted) people are ILLEGALLY are getting red-carpet treatment at our southern border to come into the US. Hoping both of you get your due justice at the end of all this.

Actually low skilled laborers are wanted and needed in the USA. Who picks the food? Why don't Indians and Chinese come to the USA to pick fruit and vegetable and cotton? Isn't it better to study in your own country and start companies there? There is too much red tape and high taxes in the USA. Stay home. You can even study in your own language. Much easier.

I am sorry to hear. My recommendation would be:
    1. Always come to state university. If you want to switch after one semester, you could do that.
    2. Always bring travelers check with you to show one semester's fee and living expenses. This will act as a proof for expenses at the port of entry.
    3. If you got a scholarship, good for you. Keep travelers check in the bank - just in case.
    4. Delete unnecessary apps, chats, emails from electronic devices. This is new, but lets be more careful.

To be honest “Indian students” have been breaking rules by doing this openly (I have done my masters in Midwest so I know the mentality of off-campus jobs) and things have been escalating. This is like unfortunate event happened to honest students. Sorry for you guys. But this is a real issue where our own students come here, take rules for granted using freedom in wrong way and then honest people suffer. Honestly I wouldn’t say so, because everyone does not have the same experience all the time. This is pretty clear they were targeted and I have heard some immigration officers just arbitrarily make up their mind to trap someone just to feel like they did their job. I usually don’t have issues but once I was asked to show my grade card on my phone once coming back from vacation in India. Just a friendly reminder, students do take help from consultants to make the process smooth but here they expect the students to independently apply for the colleges and prepare for interview by themselves without paying any external agencies to work on behalf of them. That is a drawback if they’re able to find some conversations between you and the consultant. With that simple reason they can deny entry into the USA. Just be careful with your chats and emails.

The officer who was dealing with me showed racism. He started asking me a about my university job how much I earn, and targeted to check my bag. They found a pickle in my bag and they charged me a hefty fee and in the meantime when I was in line to pay the fee - he started taunting me that in the future you need this document of evidence when you apply for green card - at that time I was a F1 student.

It really isn't "racism" but nationalism. Americans aren't studying math or computer science that much due to the classes having over 80% foreign students. American college students will study business or other majors instead. This has been going on for over 40 years. Back in the early 1980s if you went into a college class room and it was filled with Chinese or other Asians most Americans would turn around and walk out. American high schools don't push studying math as they do in Asia and therefore when Americans reach college they are about 2-3 years behind. Asian students bring the average up and Americans don't like competing with that. The US education can't change this for the next 30 years. There isn't a Russian satellite going up like with Sputnik in 1957. High school is mostly babysitting with a little studying and sports and other fun things. Also Asians have tiger moms who push their kids to study all the time.

How is it Asians fault if an American doesn't want to compete or work hard? Is it Asians fault that the education system isn't pushing math down high school kids? Having tiger parents is not amazing. The stress and trauma lives with you for a long time.
If you really want something you should work hard for it and not give excuses such as competition.
America is a country built by immigrants.

Why doesn't India have "An Indian dream"? Why is it only the USA? The dream was never meant for people born in the USA. It was originally a dream paid for by big shipping companies and later airlines. Also back when international phone calls were expensive the phone companies made bank when people phoned home. Today large real estate developers drool when large number of immigrants legal or not come here. Even during a water shortage large tract developments will be built for "the American dream" of home ownership. Many money launderers from East Asia take advantage of this. Ever hear of the book/movie Crazy Rich Asians? They spend money buying homes and even some shopping malls have completely caved in to their spending habits.

Its easy to sit in your comfort zone and virtue signal how you made it here legally so everyone else should follow the same, when you're overlooking the fact that immigration rules weren't this rigged back in the day. Also, like OP mentioned, there clearly is a double standard here when it comes to targeting illegal activities. The folks who cross the border illegally, who barely have any technical skills, are hardly targeted for working, while Indian students who actually make it here legally are more often targeted even though they are more than deserving to be here for their technical skills. This doesn’t happen to everyone. I had my immigration at Atlanta airport on 25th August and touchwood everything went smoothly. I am also here on an F1 visa for my Master’s, but my university is a reputed one. I suspect they must’ve found visa preparation questions or proof that consultancies applied on behalf of these students in their phones. Also the fact that the dean and HOD were in communication with you is odd. The HODs of good colleges don’t have the time or bandwidth to make friends with students, let alone get on zoom calls and all. It feels like they were also Indian or specifically South Indian and were involved in nepotism due to that. Otherwise this “homely” atmosphere is not possible. I feel really bad for them and I wish their experience hadn’t been so rough

Sadly there are a number of dubious universities operating in the US (and Canada) that are supposed to be “online” universities. These often serve as vehicles for illegal immigration to the US. It is unfortunate that genuine students sometimes get penalized, as is the case here. Every country has a right to determine who crosses its borders and sometimes the process can be unpleasant. Sadly, Indians have been known to abuse the system in the past and I have personal experience with this. I came to the US in 1998 as a SAP consultant. I had several years of experience with SAP and also a certification from SAP. But That was a time when anyone who spell SAP could get an H1B and that lead to a lot of abuse. So immigrations agents became extra strict about such jobs. Sadly the actions of a few dishonest people affects everyone. Most telemarketing scams today are calls from India and that gives everyone a bad name.

The percentage of abuses as you speak made by the Indian students is miniscule compared to the mayhem and total society failure being created by the illegal drug mafia.
Some Indian students may be abusing their students/work visa but they never created mayhem or rattle a society. That is the irony here.

See, I was in Indian Immigration for few years. So, as per my experience I felt like I should share this with you.
( 48:20 ) As you said that once you get the deportation stamp/remark on your passport (specially from USA) or say record, that doesn't mean you can't go to any other (non USA) country (even for job or PR) or there will be trouble for you and all. Don't worry at all. You can go anywhere except USA. As you were worried about your future, let me tell you one thing, that remark will be in Indian and USA records only. Also, every time or many times you will be (may be) asked in Indian immigration about your US deportation story (be prepared for it all the time). I advice you to not get irritated with those interrogations. Coz that's a part of procedure. Coz we face so many cases per day that, we have to stop and ask about it.
If you are clear, if all your documents are clear, I tell you my brother, no one will stop you to go abroad. If anyone stops, file a case in the court, they will have to answer in the court in written and if they loose the case there will be trouble for every responsible officer of the Indian immigration. So, what my point is.. we won't STOP you, we will just ASK you the related qs.
So, don't think that your life will be spoiled, you won't be able to go abroad due to this and all.
You still can go to Europe (as you had transit flight from Paris so you or anyone might think otherwise). They have your zero deportation record.
I have seen so many Indian deportees going to other countries and have a comfortable life. This has happened with you for the first time, that's why you are having these thoughts.
Most important: Don't tear a single page of the passport. Not even a small portion of passport. That will be a cancelled passport and you won't be able to clear even Indian immigration with that.
If you have any issue with any remarks on passport, consult with the RPO and apply for new passport. Please follow the official guidelines of passport office here. (I am just giving one advice from my side.)
(It's too late in the night for me, but as you were worried, I had to write this. It is for all.)
PN: I don't work in Immigration anymore. So, can't guide you or anyone for other issues.
PN 2: This coment is just for your concern. I won't say that I am 100% right. So, please don't take it as a legal thing. Do your own research.
Take care. Don't worry. USA is not everything.

Probably, an internal issue with the CBP which will never be known. Nevertheless, Mr. Balaji wants to become a pilot after MS in AE*? Anyone investigating would find that strange. On similar lines, Manisha wanted management courses with MS in ME? It would have been easier to take the experience from Sweden and then plan future studies. While the CBP officer was probably wrong in his assessment and acted unprofessionally, students need to really fine tune their aspirations while going overseas for study.

I think it's pretty clear, follow the rules and checklist provided by the immigration and not the university. No matter the correspondence from the university the immigration officers aren't going to buy it unless your documents align with "their" rules. The correspondence from uni is usually from admissions team and not all of them on the team are aware of legal requirements to clear the immigration and enter the country.
Tbh I'd say it's better to track down these consultancies that misguide students rather than blame immigration officials all alone. It's just like a butterfly effect of consequences of actions from previous students.
Really feel bad for those who have genuine documents

It was a horrible and traumatic experience you two had to go through. Just a tip of the iceberg. Very sad.
Unfortunately, being Indian you are lumped with many other Indians who carry fake documents, lie, over prepared so as to be suspicious, and by hook or crook try to enter countries illegally. So consequently Indians always get a closer scrutiny at points of entry, not only in the US but also in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Russia, Europe, etc. In Canada, approximately 700 Indians (students and permanent residents) are awaiting possible deportation due to false documents.
Complain, I really don't know if you'll get anywhere. The system is much too strong than the two aggrieved folks unless these two hire a renowned US lawyer with a history of success with the federal government. You are spot on about two different issues. Immigration officers will not allow anyone to enter if the paperwork is not up to date. Student admissions are not enough proof and also the lack of funds. Have a British passsport and travelled extensively but with a visa! 14000 NZ Dollars but no return ticket was detained with my son and his young family. Was eventually allowed in. Rules are Rules and Indians must try and get paperwork authenticated

It’s sad that consultants prepare for interview , but not how to be legally correct . Think from an American perspective , it takes a lot of tax payers money to track down illegal immigrants . You might not be illegal , but abundance of caution by govt is important . Your situation seems to be a victim of extra scrutiny .. it’s unfortunate, but thats how it is . Yes not all of them speak well.. but it is what it is .. wishing both of you to shine beyond this incident and be very successful in life !

I feel bad for both of you I came on a F1 visa back in 1983 without any assistant ship for the first year for a MBA I was more afraid at the US embassy interview as I was coming for. A non engineering or science study. I never found any difficulty at the port of entry in Boston
Your experience was an outlier and maybe you can get a chance to come back to the US from a different university

1983 is a different era. As you say, the visa interview in India was the tough one at that time and easy at the port of entry., if you have all the documents Things changed after 9/11. This story is bizarre and proper due process was not done and the taunting is racism. Hope they can get a good lawyer to represent them but all this is money and time. So, unfortunate.

I can relate to every word of them. I can feel it because I had faced the same situation at Boston Airport in fall 22. CBP had cancelled my visa too with reason found to be inadmissible. What I've seen is CBP were sending back students who didn't paid the fees and came on the first week of start date of college. I was fortunate enough that I came back to US with new visa in spring 23 with the help of my university Northeastern. And I was not the one over there. There were approx 27 students, who were send back with cancelled visa and some were banned too. I feel sorry for manisha and balaji and good luck for your future. This is not the end, have faith and hope. You guys will figure it out and things will start falling at their place.

"came on the first week of start date of college" can you elaborate ???
And second thing, the next time you went, did you pay the fees in advance to your university ?? I am asking this cause, some banks will disburse the amount directly to university so how can we prove that the amount is already paid by my loan provider or they will soon disburse the amount ??

@@prosalmanplays7985 okay. Let's say my start date of University is 6th September and I landed in the US on 6th or after that. Then there might be problems. Answering your second question, I paid the fees then I came. The second time when I came they took me to that room once again but this time they let me go as I had paid the fees.
I guess, They get to know about our fees from our SEVIS number. So, they know if you have paid the fees or know. Still they ask

Hi bro, how did your university help you in your second attempt?
Please if you can help, as the same thing has happened with my friend this intake. A CBP officer at Chicago airport cancelled his visa and now we are planning to reapply for the spring 2024 session.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
      Thanks in advance.

@@harikrishan2641 I contacted university regarding this after coming back to India and explained the whole situation. As it happened with other students too, they scheduled a meeting with everyone and heard everyone's individual case. For some, they said they will co-ordinate with CBP and try to bring us back. So, the university helped us to get the papers which CBP should give to us, which they didn't give us while sending us back . They suggested several things such as paying the fees and sending all the financial documents. After that, through their advocacy with DHS they helped us to get a call for a visa appointment from the embassy.
