Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

The good news is that Combines only break down during harvest season, the rest of the year they work great!!
🤣🤣🤣
Good one! 😏
Unless you need to start them.
I've been on the farm my whole life and you are correct, sir!
@@MillennialFarmerWe own a restaurant in Hackensack, MN. Equipment only breaks on busy days!
"I'm not getting special treatment here, We'll probably just get invoices." I had a hearty laugh on that one! Thanks Zach!
I really liked CatDog. He/she was a special animal with a fun personality. I'm glad you featured him/her as much as you did as it always brought a smile to my face. And I can always watch reruns whenever I get nostalgic about CatDog.
I'm sad to see Catdog move on but glad to hear he/she's doing OK. You've still got the pups and they add their own dimension to the channel. Thanks.
Might be a good idea to change the bearing on the other side too. Insurance against delays !! It's the same age.
I understand the dealer thing. I grew up on the Iron Range, my old man owned a logging company. We always used Still chainsaws only because of the dealer, we could set them outside the shop door at 8:00 PM, make a phone call and usually could pick it up at 6:00 AM. Dealers and service mater.
That’s the same reason my grandpa ran stihl saws in Missouri.
Sadly these days if you left your chainsaw outside the door at night, it would disappear. Good news though you'll probably find it at the local pawn shop in a few days. Then you'll be able to buy your own item back from them.
Catdog was my favorite character this year on Millennial Farmer and I'm sad to see them go. All that money going into stunt doubles means there's not enough to provide the actor who plays Catdog with anything, I get it. Just wish it didn't have to be this way sometimes.
😉💔🤔😥
Catdog was a red shirt.
@@afacelessname1378
Noooo
Say it isn’t so
Boo
Hiss
Notice we haven't seen Catdog in some time and they/them 'going to the neighbors' just happens to coincide with the Screen Actors Guild strike.
Cat dog went to the “farm”
I have to say that the "Safety Sally" in me gets the heebie-jeebies when you guys are in and under those machines with the engine running. 😱
You farmers do a lot of your own work, but it is obvious you all need a great service and parts department for your equipment. Great videos.
Absolutely!
Service techs deserve a raise, cool to see the 9870 wasnt too busted you had me worried after last video love those cold starts from that machine!
I've always figured you don't by a brand of equipment for name you buy it because have a good dealer that takes care of you.
I'm supporting you in this hard time being separated from cat dog
Can't believe the writers wrote off Catdog. I hope there will a decent replacement in the upcoming seasons, however you never know what the team comes up with towards the end of each season.
Sure tough to see that the Actor takes it that seriously. Let's hope for a spin-off with both of them!
I'm seeing a rising star in that new litter of kitties in the garage. I think the grey tabby might make the next season
Well said on the writers.. Super good timing.
🤣🤣 these comments Crack me up. I needed this today!
Catdog apparently tired to pull a Suzanne Sommers (RIP)and demand John Ritter’smoney
@MillennialFarmer after all that happened I'm sure you needed a laugh today. Catdog! Catdog! Catdog! Ahhh forget it. He/she's gone. Next kitty
Sorry for your loss Zac.
The best advice I can give anyone for purchasing any kind of equipment;
It will only ever be as good as the dealer/parts network in your area.
I don't know. First Jim is out for the season and now Cat-Dog has left. It's becoming a rough harvest for us viewers out here.
glad to know the cat found a home. There were probably more mice over at the neighbors.
Had a cat run off and return about 3 days later looking all dirty and greasy. Poor old cat stayed around the house the rest of his dear life after that.
We need to start a collection to get Zach a real flashlight.
Stream light stylus pro USB!
I've had mine for 8+ year and just now have developed a problem. I just have to send it in to be replaced... I've just been lazy and haven't. Still works just have to give it a tap to get full strength light🤷
He would just leave it somewhere and still use his phone😂
I agree. I was thinking the same thing

I'd buy Catdog merch for sure...I love Catdog and miss him/her already. I'm glad him/her is still alive and curious!
Good evening from Ireland 🇮🇪Zach .
TRAIN! I was typing out that we need a catdog shirt and then the outro popped on, ha!
Quick lesson in understanding combines: the engine is running. The combine itself, thresher and other moving components where they are are NOT RUNNING. And yes, this needs to be done to diagnose the problem. You can’t diagnose a running problem without the equipment actually running. They are being safe. Well done, Zach and Zach’s Dad!!! You guys are awesome! ❤❤❤
Like a bunch of lost newborn calves in search of mama.
I'm ok with that, but climbing up in there with prybars and such is not advisable while the engine is running. As I said, years gone by that would be totally fine, but nothing is mechanical anymore.
I didn't see that in the video. I think you heard the service truck running. @@byron7165
Sounds like a f. D bush on feeder
It could be diagnosed from the frequency of the clunks matching the turning rate of the discharge shaft. It then becomes a matter of determining which end of the shaft has the bad bearing.
Catdog was my favorite side character the last seasons, I wish the writers had done more with him.
He was very uncooperative, to be honest. He was difficult to work with.
@@MillennialFarmerHe claims he was underpaid, overworked, and underfed.
Which, come to think of it, are the same complaints every cat has.
I'm glad the combine noise wasn't more expensive than it was!! We sure will miss Catdog though. Huge loss. 😢
2 Full Trucks, and a little in the Grain truck. Sounds like a Country Song
Somebody dig out the pool noodles the Safety Sallys are emerging. 😂
Just wanted to say Thank you Zack for putting these videos out. Love watching them. 70 yr old fan in Montana
I am ( only ) 66 and i think the same !
From Quebec
I was only a farmer til I was 18 then left home on my own adventure and went to work for Boeing in 1965. Never went back to farming but always appreciated the life... Watch a lot of farming videos and can relate and understand.
Keep up the Great work, Zack.
Russ
Love you praise and comments on the dealership service. I have given you a hard time on twitter for being all green, but I am 100% jealous, we dont get that level of service from anyone here. that shows how excellent your dealer service department is. nice work midwest machinery!
One thing I have learned is it’s always a bearing. Even if it’s not a bearing, it’s a bearing.
My friends dog ran away and moved in with the next door neighbors. Talk about demoralizing...
City slicker here... but i do know where our food comes from... turned on the radio this morning and heard the weather's gonna turn nasty soon in the midwest... hope you get the harvest in... take care, all the best.
Nice to see you give props to Midwest Machinery & their techs!
Big props come along with a big bills and callout charges lol
Really loved the way you rolled from sad catdog news into the merch plug. Maybe you need to pay the stunt double less to get catdog back. Alternative.... start mentoring the other young kittens into catdog 2.0.
Love the channel, writers, production crew, editors and actors! Keep the green rolling!
I was really starting to feel at home when the 9870 was making noises. Sounded just like my washing machine… then y’all fixed it. Oh well. Glad you’re back going!!!
I worked for a John deere dealer road service for 10 years, I remember those late nights chasing machines around, especially during harvest
I just wanted to let you know how much my family loves your channel.
I see your stuff on X/Twitter, and its encouraging to me that far away in MN there's another "Normal" family.
Great content. My kids were sad about CatDog.
We have plenty of cats 🤣 thanks for the support!
Great video! Thanks not leaving us hanging too long for part 2. Hopefully the breakdowns are about done for you guys this year.
Just want you to know after a whole day having problems with stuff during harvest makes me feel better in the evenings to watch your videos where another farmer spends all day having problems with stuff. Thanks Zack!!
You could tell it was either one of those bushings or the beater bearing with it coming from the back. We always replaced the bushings on the shaker arms and bearings every couple years. I'd replace the other side too. Bet it won't last long
There may be more to the catdog story than meets the eye. Poor little thing may have a different story than Zac.
I am amazed that you put your hand inside the combine mechanisms, do you not worry that somehow it might start and hurt you? You trust us engineers pretty hard!
found it hard to believe he climbed in while engine was running
Seems like breakdowns tend to happen on bright sunny days when harvest conditions are great. A really frustrating item is when the neighbors are going and you're dead in the water. Thankfully you had the other combine going and making progress. Good service techs are priceless when repairs are beyond your abilities.
The support you get for emergency repairs is amazing. 🇺🇸
Those bearings give ample indications that they're gonna fail if you do your pre-season service, take all the belts off the machine and rotate everything and put a prybar to the bearings to see how much play they got in them. We got four combines, including a 9870. I put 19 bearings in one of the S670's during pre-season service, that has 2000 separator hours on it. Easier to do them in the shop during pre-season than it is in the field when the machine has to run. I found that even the bearings in the vacuum fan for the rotary screen were nearing failure point. Plus chopper bearings, discharge beater bearings, feed accelerator bearings, front rotor bearing, all the jackshaft bearings in the screen and vacuum fan drives, elevator bearings, etc.. Them bearings aren't expensive (except for that front rotor bearing), but they're time consuming to put in. They get really expensive when you have to have the dealer come out to do it.
One step more would be to listen to bearings with a mechanics stethoscope.
You will hear a problem long before it actually fails.
What an absolute XXL plot twist in the story here with catdog, this is better writing than most modern tv shows
Hey Zach, Isn't it weird how one little bearing can cause a BIG machine to go down? Your combine sounds great after the new bearing was put in! Hey, you have a new litter of kittens.... you just wait one of them will take to you and if you play your cards right that kitten will become your new mascot! We have a Tomcat that comes and goes... it's all good! Until your next video ~~~ Stay safe, healthy, warm and happy! 🚜🚜
I grew up on a feedlot. Using bailing wire to hold together a 60s John Deer combine with wood paddles. Trim steer Heston swather. No cabs.
I feel your frustration.
I love I can fast forward through it!
I watch a lot of farmers. Learned a lot, like what a shear bolt is & that farmers break a lot of them. How enormous the equipment is, how hard farming is on all the equipment & how unbelievably expensive parts are.
And trust me the prices would still shock you even knowing all of that. It’s crazy!
@@deangelojeremitriusvickers6319 oh I’ve heard. Ag equipment prices must be set by the govt, like $100 toilet seats for military budget.
if you think ag equipment/parts are expensive, best stay away from the aviation industry
@@keemez oh I’m SURE! Bc the aviation industry is ALSO part of the military complex. We all know how the military complex overcharges us to pad their dark money projects.
It does not matter what color your machinery is, it will all break eventually. So what is most important in our minds is how close and how good is the dealer. If you have a close dealer, but the service is total crap, we would go farther away.
And which one you'd rather work on
Combines no matter what color seems to be really bad for breakdowns no matter
Yup. Combines & other harvesters are very complex machines. They all have breakdowns and wear out parts often.
Great service is worth everything. Pleased you got going without too much drama.
You played the CatDog saga just right. Good entertainment to accompany very interesting coverage of the combine breakdown. Hope all continues to run smooth
The segway about Cat-Dog was hilarious! “In our time of need you could consider our merch store”. CLASSIC! 😂
If cat dog comes back you have to get some T-shirts made up!! I’d buy one for sure.. really enjoyed this video. Keep it up boss..
I love your content! Have for a couple years now.
Please keep up the hard work and BE SAFE!!
Thanks for showing a city guy what real work looks like 👍. Toronto, Ontario Canada!
The 9870 is one of the best combines JD ever produced and still a very dependable machine
I really thought adding another million subscribers and giving Anna a combine ride would lift your spirits after CatDog left you but to each their own.
You broke my heart with info of catdog......😂😂😂😂😂
Zach, I was thinking the same thing as far as sounded like something was stuck up inside of it. What threw me off was the periodic change of sound, glad you found it and no major damage.
We had a hell of a time getting our 2388 ready for harvest this year. Low hours but still managed to find problems that took weeks to fix. They all break, new or old, any color. You're absolutely right, every farmer spends money repairing things!
If it’s running it’s tearing up period! Like you said it doesn’t matter the color either as we’ve had red and green and both has their issues.
Combine puzzles, the bigger machines have bigger problems. Keeping farmers in our prayers especially during harvest.
And this, folks, is what harvest is really like. Grovelling inside a combine.
Please don’t ever forget that you and your family are a piece of sanity in our world. I did the same work on a cattle ranch when young. I can relate to it all. Please keep going!
i would buy cat dog merch., you need to get him or her back!
Now retired but worked over 45 years in industrial maintenance so watching you troubleshoot and then repair the bad bearing brought back memories. Been at the end of that pry bar myself more than I can count. Enjoy the channel, sorry about Catdog. 😆
When you hear the knocking fading in and out it makes sense that there is an imbalance! ie: bearing!😊
Zack, this is why I watch your content, you are a "genuine" person by the way you thanked Midwest. Keep up the good work. :)
Very hard to find services like that anymore that’s awesome ya you spend a ton of money but good deal having guys like them
I hope cat dog is happy in the new home. But I think a rescue mission is in order. Glad the combine is fixed. Thank God for tech's. Hope the rest of harvest is problem free. Thanks Zack.
Glad you got it figured out and fixed great to have a great service guy whether it’s a big dealer or a small one guy operation you can’t beat good service when it’s needed most thanks for sharing
Love the farm setup . Makes want to play on Midwest horizons again it’s always been one of my favorite maps
Zach: You need to add a modern small flashlight to your pocket load out. Get a good one and you’ll wonder how you got along without one.
I use my Smartphone light occasionally and always think “Where’s my good light when I need it?” Sitting on my dresser. ☹️
A local farmer lost both legs a few months ago and everybody wondered how it could happen. By crawling in these tight spaces with the machinery still switched on, I can somehow comprehend how it _might_ happen when you are not *extremely careful* at all times!
Augers are way worse than combines. Combines are made to be worked on. It's actually amazing how they build them to have access to everything so they can be fixed on the fly. Cept for the electronics, of course. Augers are just made to eat everything, including you.
I always wondered about your brand loyalty, it’s so perfectly illustrated in the last two videos. That’s a good business partner you have up there!!
With farmers it's less about brand loyalty and more dealership loyalty. If the dealership is awesome then they'll take care of your stuff so it works.
8:00 The Farmer & The Train Engineer with a nice little exchange. Very subtle but highly respectable moment.
CatDog needs his own merch!
Dad had a '68 Deere 45 combine. Remember well bearings going out on it during harvest. Dad had a sort of "golden ear" to detect them and he'd stop frequently and put oil on them to try make it through harvest. I always wondered if these bearings were just undersized or what. Seems like same problems continue with newer stuff.
From the sound of this one, I was pretty sure it was a bearing someplace.
Glad y'all got fixed up. Have a safe harvest. We're going to start up again Tuesday running beans in Ohio
Glad you got your combine working again and sorry about catdog keep up the content loving channel
Those field techs deserve a raise
God Bless the American Farmers.
Why does your profile icon look very similar to network chuck
@@jamesmcintosh4664 Have no idea who that is James. Ironically that Profile pic looks just like me. I put it together myself using a couple different black and white images I ran across online.
Zach I'm sorry about the situation with Cat/Dog. Remembering the good times we all had with you and Cat/Dog. Onwards and upwards for all involved.
Good video good to see y'all
It’s A+ customer service is what I call it.
Hey Millennial Farmer, I always enjoyed watching Farmers Harvest their crops, and I hope to buy some land one day and become a farmer myself after I finish High school this year, because I'm only 19, My question is, Is it Hard to be a farmer, what are some positive and negative things about your job as a Farmer ? I hope you figure what's wrong with the Combine
Sorry to spoil your dream but it's damn near impossible for a young person to become a first generation farmer. My advice to you is go find employment at a well established farm if that's the kind of work you would like to do. Good luck
Awesome Service
Wow I was right, I guessed it was a bearing, no kidding.
All these comments about shutting the machine off. I understand but how can you tell what's going on with the machine off? Anyway, I have no dog in this fight.
Catdog maybe wasn’t happy that Jim hasn’t been around and thought he/she would find a new home before he/she got the boot
Some of the problems today are caused by time. The combines are unloaded on the run where as in years gone past the machine stopped to unload and as we would do we would walk around the machine from time to time and feel for any abnormally hot bearings. Anote was made if anything was found to be suspect and then was replaced when time allowed. We had very few stoppages using this practice.
Yay! Part two!
People who wave at trains are the salt of the earth. God bless you.
What was the blue-ish purple-ish light as he was pulling into RDO? I have the utmost respect for mechanics, more specifically field mechanics. It’s a shit job you’re always fighting stuff and it’s either 100° or -10° and the wind is blowing all while standing in your head holding heavy parts trying to get it fixed
Wow awesome response from your dealer..up here our dealer will show up a week after we call😂 and won't have the basic parts needed for any piece of equipment..but they really good at charging for overnight freight 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for your time making the video watching from Reno NV
You know Zach, I think Catdog left due to not getting to ride in the Combine. I hope Digi and Anna didn't see this video and leave as well!!
Safety police made of non farmers. Awesome. Hope you all feel better now.
Thank you for the video.
Thank you for including a train. Oh, can you tell I love trains?
