Liverpool 1977-78 part 1

- 1977-78 was the season where Liverpool came runners up to Nottingham Forest in both the league and League Cup Final. They were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Chelsea and suffered patches of inconsistent league form They did however find glorious redemption in another European Cup triumph thereby becoming the first British club to retain the trophy.
This is the third unofficial season review covering the years of Bob Paisleys management career at Liverpool. it is split into two parts because of size. I have included all the goals and games I could find including pre season friendlies but any additional footage would be greatly welcomed. My aim is to compile as complete a visual record of Bob Paisleys management years as is possible.
As in previous videos I offer my apologies for the variable picture and audio quality throughout. Sadly, it is just the nature of football coverage nearly 40 years ago......sometimes poor quality and often missing or non existent game footage.

Liverpool fan through and through, the late 70's are a bit before my time. For me this (era) was probably their finest team and much of this campaign especially is poorly documented elsewhere. The vast majority of domestic games and goals shown here I'd never seen before, and must have been difficult to get hold of. Great stuff Matt, very well done for compiling this vintage stuff together! Cheers.
No problem ar all and thanks for taking the time to post this comment. I always appreciate positive feedback from fellow reds like myself or even non red supporters of 70s footy. I compile everything I find and then just throw it all together so its very very basic but tries to at least put together as complete a picture of the season as I am able to....glad you enjoyed it and look out for following seasons.....eventually lol
Really impressed with this, given there weren't any video season reviews released to the public till sometime in the 80s I had never seen this full season!
As a Man Utd fan I naturally hate Liverpool but growing up in the 70s when they became unstoppable as envious as I was they are part of my lifel aswell . Great club an history like Utd an arsenal Tbf. Respect

great videos even though I'm not a Liverpool fan - I'm looking forwards to your next effort hoping its 78/79 and includes the 1:1 draw with Leeds in Nov 78 which I think was on ITV.
+mdnadams Thank you very much. Always good to get positive feedback from footy fans of whichever team. The game you mentioned was at Anfield and sadly not shown. There was an industrial dispute at the time and Granada who may well have covered the game had no football coverage between late October of 78 to early December of 78. Neither was it on the BBC. If you are interested here are two websites which show which games were covered by ITV and the BBC from the 60s to early 80s. They have been invaluable to me in my research so far.

I am researching 78/79 currently and trying to find any new footage I can, not just game footage but interviews etc. At this point I have neither Liverpool Leeds games from that season but I am not giving up yet! Thanks for the feedback and I hope you will enjoy the next video. Best wishes, Matt

I remember very clearly the Villa home game from Match of the Day as I was a big Andy Gray fan even though Leeds were my team. I'm sure Starsky & Hutch was on before with Parkinson following after the footy. Schoolboy defending for the first two goals though!
+elland1979 Thanks for the feedback and hope you enjoyed the vid. Andy Gray was always a menace to Liverpool back in the day and that was a very good Villa team in the late seventies. We extracted revenge later in the season at least!

Didn't Villa do Liverpool by 5 goals the season before or maybe even the one before that? But with no cameras present!
yes exactly I was desperately looking for footage of that game for my 76-77 compilation but none exists....not even ap archive news footage.....it was 5 -1 at half time to Villa and Liverpools worst defeat till it was equaled away to Coventry in the early nineties and then beaten with a 6 -1 hammering away to Stoke at the end of the 14-15 season....we very rarely get thrashed in our history so that defeat in December 76 was shocking....followed a measure of revenge the following year at least. It's a really well put together piece, you've shown great dedication in sourcing the old footage. Shame there was no footage for either of the league cup games with Coventry. I was at the replay. (2-0 Liverpool)

There hasn't been another season like this one since with Forest newly promoted running away with the league and League cup Liverpool came good from about March on and retained the European cup by playing only seven games losing two
Regarding the LC final...it helps when the referee gets the 3 KEY decisions over the two games completely wrong and they all go against one of the two teams...
