Fascinating. That pre-computers signal board gives me nightmares! But quite sobering to see how much more advanced they were than us - not just with signalling and train control, but with so much electrification (electric shunters - not sure we have them even now!).

Victoria Signal Centre Clapham junction was a Disaster! Failures all the time. ASE was 'Wrong man for the job', corrupt, embezzling money to run department, had to be paid off. Replacement narcissistic told by Chairman BR Board that he was to be sacked in 6 months time unless failures dropped. Bought in man from Swanley led a task force team found lots of equipment faults.
