Initially via steam rail cab ride or head out of carriage windows, clockwork camera shots were rare, brief & silent. Many lines have since closed.
Ex BR & son of a ferryman, Alan was keen on all transport operations. He filmed & scripted, his widow Heather often voices naration, whilst son Robin researches, digitizes, edits & intends to complete the archive. Do subscribe, as there are many more films to publish here.

Swiss Schynige Platte Railway & Grindelwald's Firstbahn SPB BOB 1968
This electric hauled Berner Oberland-Bahnen route connects Wilderswil, near Interlaken, with the famous wildflower gardens of the Schynige Platte along 7km of 80cm narrow-gauge track, climbing 25% gradient Riggenbach rack.
The upper station has hiking paths to access nearby valleys. Adjacent Grindelwald is accessed by First Bahn, which was Europe's longest chairlift. This film captures it's Ludwig von Roll’schen Eisenwerke pioneer designed, unique 1947 vintage switching sideways chairlift, which in 1991 was replaced by a modern gondola.
This original 8mm cine film captures the Swiss summer tourism scene in 1968. It is accompanied by Paul Russenberger's voiced narration from 1999.

Steam train ride on BRIENZ Rothorn Swiss railway BRB 1968
Переглядів 2796 місяців тому
A rare working steam route, built for tourism but off season, it still serves the midpoint Planalp's remote village commute. From lakeside to forest, to alpine pasture, ending 100m shy of the summit, a string of either oil or coal fired steam hauled single carriage sets, photogenically climb Abt rack in sequence. This original 8mm cine film, shot summer 1968, captures the route, locos and rolli...

In 1871 the VRB conquered 25% alpine slopes to pioneer public transport using Niklaus Riggenbach's rack rail, extending two years later up to Rigi Kulm 7km above Vitznau on the shore of Lake Lucerne. Also featured is the 1874 addition of a dual track passing section with traverser junctions which were replaced with points in 1959/61 shortly after this cine film was shot in 1958. The Rhône Glacier slides downhill 35m a year, though could be seen at speed along this original Glacier Express Furka Oberalp rail route. Climate change caused 10m uphill retreat per year for many decades, today slowed by UV-proof blankets. The 15km Furka Base Tunnel now accelerates express trains by eliminating the climb over the Furka Pass, which incidentally this film captures but is also fe...

Alan Snowdon began filming his travels in 1958, uniquely capturing steam’s eleventh hour, long gone lines and glimpses of life in the UK & overseas. As a signalling engineer and preservation enthusiast, he was especially informed & passionate about railway operations, but championed all public transport. As Alan aged, his film legacy became a family endeavour; son Robin continues the work of sh...

LUCERNE's Swiss Steam, Tram & Rack Railways 1958
Cine films taken by Alan Snowden are admirable! What puzzles me is that when he started filming from 1958, must have had both lots of time & money, something that young men at the time could only dream off.
If I had a shilling for every time I went on the ferries I'd be very wealthy now!
Very late to this, but I loved this vid. So many of today's canal videos are about "luxury" boats or made by UA-camrs trying to make "exciting" vids by opening paddles too fast etc. It's marvellous to see a video that shows the canals before they became gentrified and just showed boats being handled with quiet competence. Thanks for posting.
Thanks

This is short but brilliant. I used to watch this and the Merchant Navies from Nine Elms as a 10 year old. It’s amazing to see the Kenny Belle morph into todays Overground.
Superb film: thanks for making such a priceless record!
Thanks
Sincere thanks for your generous support of the Alan Snowdon Archive. More UK content currently under production.
I remember those old ferries, such a good memory
I once did a few night shifts for a contractor at where I think was Seaham old pit kids would come on site start shouting at the security man as he chased them other kids would come across from a estate with wheelbarrows shovels fill up and run like he'll across the road I thought it brill but never said a word wanted to go home with my windscreen intact
A priceless record.

Amazing
County of Essex.
Cardington was a reception centre for RAF national servicemen. Troop specials then took them to their designated camp. Troop specials also ran from Henlow Camp.
That signal before Langstone harbour viaduct is still there complete with arm
She sounds like a jolly cheerful cnt!
Happy memories. I was born in Plumstead and often ,with some friends, spend hours on the ferry. We were regurlary thrown off the ferry ,for no doubt, being troublesome. On some occasions we had to return home walking through the foot tunnel.
Brilliant. My grandfather was station master at Barnard Castle in the early 60s and I spend many holidays there. I road the train (free!) to Middleton and back quite a few times, sometimes in the cab or on the footplate. I also spent many hours in the two signal boxes at BC and your video has just transported me back 60 years! Thank you.
We used to jump onto the top of the load of coal and ride from witton down to Salford bridge.
Those were the days!
Fantastic record of a lamented time gone by with beautiful clear narration. Massive thanks to all involved in recording and producing this.
The class 27 identified is a class 31
Very good. Who took the film? Your father perhaps? I was 4 in 1962 and not living in the area, I was 7 the year the line closed, still no recollection as I lived in Essex. I do remember cycling on the cuckoo trail many years later when I was a young adult. I'm elderly now.
I live at Barnard Castle and didn’t appreciate how large the sidings were. Great video.
Have to say that your narration is superb.
For someone from New Zealand building a model of the S&C in 1964 this is a gem. Many thanks
Great film! So many iconic places. An AI restoration of this would be magical. Where is the location at 03:27 where we can see two tunnel mouths?
I remember travelling on these trains as a kid on holiday. Happy times.
Happy but dimming memories. Thank you. A brief glimpse of the entrance to Woolwich Arsenal where my grandfather worked at the start of WW1.
I am intrigued by the gravity run of the coaches at Cowes. I wonder what "Elf & Safety" would say today (2024)? Thank you for publishing these wonderful films.
I lived right beside Burnham Station (near Slough) until March 1958. These scenes bring back my trainspotting days.
I remember the car shuttle as a young boy , driving to Italy from England with my parents. Brought back loads of memories. Nice !
Don't remember it but already miss it.
Great film. I was born in 66, so don't have a memory of 'this' London. Wish I did.
Cine films you produced are superb! Certainly had the right idea.
Wonderful piece of filming!
Great piece of filming
To Alan, your cine films you made are superb! You certainlyhad the right idea.
The railway cottage for the level crossing keeper at Barnard Castle is still there, with D&S plate on the side. I lived in it when I started at Glaxo. There is fine walk along the old track bed, from near Lartington to within a few hundred metres of Middleton-in-Teesdale former station, looking a little sad these days. Lovely views, viaducts, bridges and the odd bit if trackside remains.
0:40 That's the Jeanie Deans of 1931. As built she was totally different from the Waverley. At the end of the war, the Jeanie was rebuilt and the Waverley was a new build (keel laid down at the end of 1945). The plans for both were very similar. The easy way to tell them apart is that the Jeanie had a lot of small windows (15?) in the forward part of her hull where the Waverley has 9 large windows.
Very good.
A brilliant film - perhaps the finest of Alan Snowdon's many colour films (and there are many good ones). I travelled on the Kyle Line in 1964 and it is wonderful to see in colour what I saw. The National Railway Museum must collect and keep the Snowdon films for posterity. The film shows the landscape as it still is, and the perfect stations, so well-kept at the time. The up train crossed the down observation car train at Achanalt - just glimpsed are a good number of people in the ex-Devon Belle car. The BRCW (Class 27) diesel locos and the maroon Mk1 carriages were perfect for the line. I remember the 'putter-putter' sound that the locos made when not accelerating. It is 2024, and fifty years have passed since a Minister of Transport finally announced in 1974 that the Kyle Line would not close. In the early 70s it had received provisional consent to close, but a political and public campaign reversed that decision. What we need in the 2030s on the Kyle line is a new class of three- or four-car diesel multiple-unit train, with large windows all round, views to the front and rear, a baggage, parcels and bicycles section in the middle coach, and low-backed, facing, comfortable seats from which the wonderful landscape can be seen. This would be a marketable train for visitors and local people alike, and should be put in service on all the Highland lines. The existing Class 158 trains are not really good enough for such a fine railway. A task for Transport Scotland and the promised 'Great British Railways'....
Amazing video. Loads of memories of watching the trains at the level crossing at lingfield around that time, and chatting with the crossing keeper Mr Blackford. Brilliant 👍👍
I was born in the 80's so missed steam on the mainline by 20 years. I caught the bug from my late Dad, and have always loved railways. I first discovered Alan's videos a few years ago, absolutely remarkable footage and a goldmine for folks like me, capturing as you say - a bygone age. Thank you for your ongoing work to share Alan's legacy with the world.
So glad to see my old ship “ Taupo “ New Zealand Shipping Co , I sailed on her to NZ and then up to Japan and back ! Then off to Africa and the Med . Happy days as an Engineer .
Have you got the Grimsby Town to Boston railway line film?
My Dad drove the final service train
It's good to see doe Bank Bridge almost 18 years before I was born,
