    Changing a head gasket on my 2011 MX-5 was almost $3800 they wanted. So I literally spent 1 week on UA-cam and a weekend doing it myself. Took me about 6 hours and a friend for motivation. Really nothing too hard. Saved me $3700 because I wasn't lazy.
    Edit 2021 3 years later. To clarify, the $3800 was the Mazda dealership. They said they needed to flush the coolant, do a diagnostic check, clear the bla bla bla. I knew they were making it a big job. Still own the car and it now has a 2015 Ford Fusion engine. The

    I remember the trick my father did when he put the heads back on after a valve job. He sawed the hex of the bolts off, then sawed the bolts down the middle to make it a long screw. He screwed the bolts in, then used them as guide to place the head on. One by one he used a screwdriver to remove the old bolts and replace them with the new bolts that came with the gasket.

    I have a few suggestion about the repair:
    1. When loosening the head bolts, you need to start outwards and work your way in, and when tightening start in the middle and work your way out in a spiral pattern. You started from the middle at both loosening and tightening.
    2. The head could be warped, so it must be measured with a feeler gauge (usually it must be within 0.05 mm). If warped head must be resurfaced (it can be done DIY). Same for the block.
    3. The dowels that were stuck in the head needed to be taken out and put in the block for easier installation and also for gasket alignment, although this is a minor detail.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  6 років тому +1

      Valentin Calinoaia 1. They way I did the bolts were by spec
      2. I mentioned at the end of the video that I needed to get it resurfaced, and I did, only costed $60.
      3. I totally forgot to mention about the dowels, so you got me there lol.
      Thank you though

    • @valentinc22
      @valentinc22 6 років тому

      You're welcome ! I assumed the spec was wrong about the loosening sequence (which is probably the case), that is why I made the suggestion. It's really not that big of a deal, it's just a good practice, in reality if you loose them in steps (which you did), it shouldn't matter that much.
      Nice videos anyway ! Keep up the good work !

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  6 років тому +3

      Valentin Calinoaia I just assumed that was the loosening specs then. I’m definitely not a pro mechanic, I just wanted to develop a decent video because there are videos like this one that are like 30 minutes long with 5 parts. So, I wanted to make one straight to the point. Thank you man.

      @@AutoMotivate so the head was resurfaced and not the block? how do you know if you need to do the block as well? head is easy because you can just take it to the machine shop but the block obviously that you can't bring to the shop...I'm curious on this. great video by the way...you just gave me huge piece of mind realizing this job is 100x easier than I actually thought it was going to be....these are the main questions I have though....

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  2 роки тому +2

      @@mikeberg8027 the head is just more likely to warp than the block. You can check the block if it is warped, I am sure there is a video on that on UA-cam somewhere and would be smart to do.

    Man, great video! but you are getting a few things wrong.
    The manifold next to the fuel injectors is the intake manifold, not the exhaust manifold. Also, at the beginning when you took off the engine valve cover, you called it a head.
    The torque procedure for the head bolts was correct, however when you are loosening the head bolts to remove the head, the procedure is the reverse of the installation procedure. Basically, to loosen you go from the outside in, and to tighten from the inside out like you did.

    • @AutoMotivate

    Thanks...im getting ready to do this and it really is important to note that it's just specific tools mechanics have and that its a 50/50 every single time because the parts may be damaged as was the case here. Youll obviously always doubt the efficacy of a mechanic because you dont know exactly whats wrong in every case. Theres really no room for doubt...only discovery of the problem. Thats important to remember. Find the problem and be ready for everything it has effected and be prepared for 1 to lead to 234- and so on. Its a machine...its going to be that way. I did this on my 94 Honda Civic DX as well. I don't remember it being so much work. That was way back though. I do remember that once I got it apart the gasket looked fine to me... not that I really knew what I was looking at...lol. I replaced it anyway. I think the mechanic that diagnosed it was trying to sell me on a fix I didn't need. I don't know much about cars and probably would have paid them. However, luckily our base had a good auto hobby shop. At military auto hobby shops you basically rent a bay by the hour and you get to use their tools, lifts, etc. They also have one or two mechanics on duty that run the place and will walk you through what you need to do to fix whatever you are working on. I remember it being both fun and yet a bit scary...lol.
    Btw, I held on to that vehicle for 21 years and put on a ton of miles (a few overseas even on the autobahn) before finally trading it in. I wanted a larger vehicle. It was an insanely reliable vehicle though for those 21 years.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  5 років тому

      The Civic is truly a forever car. A car that can last through generations. A car you build a unique bond with because it just won’t die.
      The military auto shops are a blessing. Wish there were ones for public use, too. Mechanic was probably trying to pocket some money or he wrongfully diagnosed it. Where did the car go?

    • @101perspective
      @101perspective 5 років тому

      @@AutoMotivate I needed a larger vehicle so I traded it in at a dealership. I was sad to let it go but I couldn't afford to hold onto two vehicles. I'm pretty positive they resold it... so it's still out there chugging away.
      Btw, in case you are curious, the vehicle will actually do over 120 mph like the speedometer indicates. I tested it out on the autobahn one time. I figured the car deserved to get up to full speed at least once. Held it there for about a minute then went back down to my regular 85. It did it... not sure if it liked it though...lol.

I bought it for $700.00, put a radiator, spark plugs and wires plus front brake rotors and pads on it, started driving it. Then I replaced the inner and outer tie rods, upper control arms and lower ball joints. Later replaced the clutch and swapped transmissions to one out of a VX hatchback (my original trans. was trashed, the VX trans was on hand, and with taller gearing, I get 48MPG now :D ) and now the swapping of the head gasket. I absolutely love my car. Would post a picture, but this is UA-cam lol. Oh, and also have 1994-2001 Acura Integra LS Mesh 15 inch wheels instead of the original 13 inch wheels :)

      Total actual work time, about 3 hours including the clean up of the bolt holes and cleaning the deck surface, to head now on. I pulled the plug from the front of the block to make cleaning out of the coolant passages easier (it is where the knock sensor would go, if so equipped) and I have that back on and tight, the head is one and pretty much ready. Draining the oil is next, then a bit of fresh to clean out the oil passages a bit and pre-lube the cam and rockers. Then on to timing, water pump and tensioner, and that is where I will have to stop till I have my new lower injector seals and the seal for the back of the catalytic converter.

    Good work and SOHC D series very good and simple engine and set up for a DIY'er to practice on. After many years of doing this, I would say its not worth skimping on parts that are laborious to remove so I would shop for an OEM or Felpro HG for a job like this but I don't want to be in anyone's pockets, just my .02. Otherwise chapeau on your efforts young man. I just watched to the end and don't want to be a keyboard technician but was thinking as I watched you that a straight edge would be recommended to check block and head as these long blocks generally don't blow head gaskets unless severely overheated and the head gets warped. I think the factory spec is a minimum .04 mm of clearance with a quality straight edge.

    I slipped the belt on, wasn’t easy. Moved the power steering pump out of the way, got the teeth on from the intake side first, then used a pick tool to leverage the rest of the teeth on. Could have done it in 3 minutes if I new this. The tension on the tensioner was pretty tight. Also the middle but on the intake is killer to get on and off if you’ve never done it before, get your self a ratcheting wrench in its size which I think is 12mm... makes life easy. And to put it back on, one finger ever so carefully sliding it down the very small pathway. Everything else is just wrenching away. Took me about 6-7 hours. Do it in the shade with plenty of water or split it into a weekend job if you can.

    At 8:20, its actually the intake manifold, NOT the exhaust. That's on the other side of head. To facilitate head installation, use dummy studs that screw into the head bolt holes, but are long enough that they can be removed once a few head bolts are loosely started in their heads. Beats damaging the head casket.

    Hey bro nice video. Couple questions.. What were your symptoms that told you blown head gasket. I have a 97 DX 1.6L non vtec. Temp creeps up at idle and sometimes times as slow speed. replaced fan sensor switch (thermostat housing), ECT sensor (front of engine on water output below distributor) and thermo sending unit gauge sending unit senor (under distributer). Has new genuie thermostat and new coolant. fan functions when jumperd. Fan will not go on until gauge is at HOT at idle. Even with fan jumped constant on temp still gets up to near H on gauge in slow driving.
    Dont know condition of water pump. In your suggest should I just move to head gasket and do the water pump / Tbelt when in there or should I address the water pump first?
    Did your car have similar symptoms?
    Any advice would be awesome.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  2 роки тому

      The symptom was obvous for me, the fluids were mixing. But, I would definitely suggest repolace the cooling system parts. Could very well be a waterpump or thermostat.
      Next time the car overheats, try to touch the top and bottom radiator hoses. ( the top will atleast be hot so be very careful) and see if the hoses are the same temp. If they are not the same temp, then waterpump and thermostat is your best bet.
      If they are, then the problem is something else.

      I guess that could depend on the manufacturer.i haven't run across one that states a particular sequence for removal, according to the factory service manuals. I always read up on any motor I'm unfamiliar with. If the manufacturer recommends you do that on an engine you are working with, then I would follow what the service manual states.

My mechanic says it's a risk to change the Head Gasket since we already did it about 6 1/2 years ago. He didn't do it, another mechanic did. They shaved the engine / resurfaced it or whatever it's called and put new gaskets on. And the rebuilt the top 1/2 of the engine. Piston Rings, bored it out a bit, Rebuilt Cylinder head, Valves, Valve Adjustments etc... Is there any chance I can do what you did? P.s. the engine is super clean and runs really strong, gets great gas mileage etc... Transmission runs strong, was rebuilt about 5 years ago too... I drive about 10,000 miles a year or less. I've never done any mechanic stuff before, my dad is a mechanic and said I can use his massive collection of tools but he can't help bc he is super old. Do you think I could do this on my own? I'm nervous but don't want to pay someone to do it

      Do it,it's intimidating at first but you'll get past it. You have tools and an experienced professional at your side. Go through with it young grasshopper

      For sure. It’s better than just letting the car sit. If you have issues, then bring a mechanic in. Should be fine, though.

    I’ve never done head gasket. But thanks for the vid very informative and to the point. Background music does have to go.
    Why do people always say you have to get the top cylinder machined?

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  2 роки тому

      They usually say to get the bottom of the head machined just incase it has warped, which I did in this case. The block itself usually do not warp and would crack instead.
      This was one of my first videos, so my editing skills were sub par

      Roberto Balanzar work hard man. I made many mistakes here, so hopefully you’ll learn to not do what I shouldn’t have done.

    While this is a clear video of taking apart this Civic, at 12:45 the maker notes that he reassembled the whole thing and it still leaked! For those not familiar with this job: This video is missing the critical element of surfacing the block and head and checking for warpage! This is essential for replacing a head gasket.

    Hi do I need to align anything after taking it apart? I often see people in UA-cam lining up something(i guess) like the piston in it's original position or something. I don't quite understand it so it is making me really scared to start the work.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  4 роки тому

      What you are explains is making sure the piston is Top dead center so it would be easier to align everything back together when you reinstall everything. However, in this video I use the method where I keep everything in place and reinstall it I all in the same working order. Even if you have to get the head shaven down, if you install all the valves the exact same way as you had it, you shouldn’t have any issues

    Copper spray is designed for older engines that have rough cut Machine surfaces. Sand the surface with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper to clean it. Composite gaskets go on dry. Last thing you want to do is a head gasket twice. You be okay with the copper coat on the composite gasket. But if you put that on a MLS head gasket you're in trouble.

      Be patient. Slowly wedge it on each tooth. Work from left to right and right to left. This is actually a bit trick but can definitely be done.

    Great video! How many miles on the 1994 Civic? Do you still have it? I had a 1995 Civic DX coupe. Problem free until I got hit by a 22 wheeler semi and totalled my car at 220,000 miles.
