Yes what they are doing is wonderful and needed work. If only food, shelter and heating were affordably priced. That would be a great start to really giving these folks their dignity back.
Food banks distribute food to 25-30% of people in need. The vast majority of food bank generosity is wasted on people who use food banks as a way to save money to buy drugs and or alcohol. I had to quit my church because they insisted everyone showing up for donations was deserving.
When I watch this, I remember our neighbor, who would use the food bank while taking care of her 5-6 young children. Her husband would work at least 5 times a week and drive to the job site in one of their two brand new cars. Unfortunately the children were no longer able to get free pizza on school pizza days after a concerned citizen requested an investigation into this impoverished families situation. Today this poor family has moved into their new 2 million dollar home, leaving our neighborhood with at least a few questions that I don’t think CBC will be answering.
Do you really believe it is CBCs job to investigate when someone takes advantage of the system? Or, do you think most people are not aware that there are people abusing the system? Sounds like this was remedied and the poor continued to receive what they needed. So, what exactly is your point?
Additionally, why does this video remind you of that event. I mean, if you saw a video of that school would you only remember one family not getting pizza? Sounds like you have developed a BIAS.
I know a woman who goes to the foodbank to feed her four kids but for her and her husband they get takeout every day. She's like 350 pounds while the kids are literally starving. They buy new tv's and cars and she shops on amazon every single week for stuff they don't need, like a cotton candy machine
Alex Shapiro . I agree with you! I think that many human beings are not exactly civilized in the current coronavirus environment. To many customers have been hoarding/stockpiling food, and paper towels, and toilet paper, and sanitation products, and are constantly revisiting the supermarkets only to do more stockpiling because they are fearful of the coronavirus!
And in the UK. I live in High Wycombe, north west of London, and we have a foodbank and a food hub. The latter is self serve albeit at a very small cost but not the former
Only if Lethbridge had a food bank like this. We have a big building where Save On once was that is just standing there that could be used as a store type of food bank
I heard that Toronto has a massive homeless population too. I was told this was due to the climate, in that you can actually live in Toronto all year round, unlike some other parts of Canada. I've never actually done the research to see if that statement is true, but it sounds legit to me. If anyone would care to comment if it's true or not, that would be intresting.
I've had to use a couple of food banks in Winnipeg a few times, one of them packs upwards of 50-60 people in a 15x20 foot room for up to an hour before allowing them to sit down in the receiving room and the other makes everyone stand outside for sometimes 2-3 hours even on the coldest winter days with nowhere to sit but the curb. Now I'm a volunteer at the Winnipeg Harvest warehouse and I see a lot of high quality, expensive items that I've hardly ever seen at the food banks, it's mostly cheap stuff you can get at Dollarama. Turns out the volunteers at the food banks get to pick out all the things they want before anyone comes in, which is always the best items. Snack items like chips, chocolate etc. and baked goods like donuts, cakes and pies are rarely ever given out at food banks but we get shitloads of it at the warehouse. We need something like this in Winnipeg, hell, everywhere.
This is exactly why I don't donate my money to charities. It's a well known fact that most donated items or money goes to the director or governing board. Sick bastards!!!
There is no dignity and no shits given by anyone in northern colorado. I got two days worth of groceries at earlier time this month, have gone hungry since. Have told them, they dont care. Gave out turkeys and never told me, senior, veteran, disabled, no car, no bus. Couldnt even bother to ask me if I wanted a turkey. I havent eaten 18 days out of this month. Thank my local food banks. The people who work there, eat plenty, as observed by their girth. That anyone gives a damn, is a lie.
I'm pretty sure the food that they go to this market of groceries is not free so either way it's still paid out of pocket we don't have one of those here but it is what it is y'all
"If you would eat it, please donate it" Sigh. You'd think that was simple logic. I like this idea of setting it up like a grocery store. It should be everywhere.
There is no dignity in not being able to support themselves. We need to go back to the days of people feeling ashamed for not being able to support themselves or their family.
Oof, someone was born with a silver spoon. Do you know what minimum wage is right now? Even as a "productive member of society" you may not be able to afford food for your family. Welcome to Canada's economy.
Justin Meers Ah yes, Justin. Those good ol days. Which ones were those, Justin? Enlighten us. I don't know what I'd do honestly. Never met anyone like you in person. I'd probably just ask you a series of open ended questions to try understand what causes a person to become like you. Why don't you tell us?
Glad you care for the homeless so much! Have you asked one what value this may or may not have added? Do that, then join a shelter and then do what you think is best. Your energy would be welcomed.
But you are right. I should join a shelter, or a soup kitchen.. Id be more interested in volenteering with safewalk programs because of the crystal meth epidemic.
Eric Bachmann agreed with you on that. I would love to see people in need come to a farm, get fresh food, take a look around the pantry and then come out and work it when they are able. I'm not a fan of grocery market behaviors, products or consumerist ideologies. However, from the perspective that the whole society goes to them this goes a long way to not making people feel othered for their poverty. That being said, and I think this is where we might agree, if this is the model then are we not all poor? My point was around how people might feel about these aesthetics in the context of the dominant frame.
In sorry, but for a food bank, run by a church, you think they would be try to exude being humble instead of being prideful and dignified. There are lessons to be learnt, unfortunately this is one of pride and greed.
they're doing a good thing? they're not being boastful they're just talking about the good it's done in the community, which--isn't like to brag, it might inspire other food banks to do similar things, or educate... that kinda deal

This is the way food banks should be, right across this country!
Absolutly! This is wonderful!
Amen
i have gone to the food bank before to get free food and groceries.
I agree. It gives them something more. :)
Every food bank now has that type of setting!
"To Moms, showing love through food is a big deal". That's a beautiful quote, ma'am.
brings a smile to my face as I see this. While in university, I was broke and had to live a few years off food banks. good stuff
So heartwarming to see. A Country helping its citizens. Here in South Africa you are on your own.
Proud to be in Toronto because of amazing people like this.
Who's idea this, he is absolutely brilliant and played a leading role. I appreciate your idea, well done.
😊😊😊so heart warming
omg. these companies have to stop raising food prices. this is insane that so many depend on food banks.
Yes what they are doing is wonderful and needed work. If only food, shelter and heating were affordably priced. That would be a great start to really giving these folks their dignity back.

We need this in the U.K., desperately.

Don't they throw the remaining food away anyways?
Looks a lot fresher than the stale food I've seen at food banks. Giving recipients choice is better too.
It's amazing to see more food banks like those in every city of our country! They eliminating grocery stores!
i went to a place like this before. it is nice to get some choices.

Human Beings become people in 2019.
If you feed a feral animal , it's still feral.
Human beings become animals again in 2020

We need to have a law that makes grocery stores donate food instead of throwing it out.
Hell yah
Dignity how beautiful.
Amazing
Looks amazing well done ❤️🙏🏻
They need this in the USA everywhere!!! This is amazing!!

Great work guys❤
Marvelous! Praise God!
How do you prevent the food hoarders from taking more than their fair share?
Love this! Much respect
We need this in Winnipeg
I absolutely love this idea!!
GOD bless all these people
This is great!
We should have a couple in every city.
Very kind of them and they pick there own items.
This is awesome 👏🏼 Bless you!!!🙏🏼

Beautiful people! I want to volunteer
This is done in Hamilton too.
What a great idea, should be done more places
Aside: Do government's pay anything for any of food banks? (When they first started, the answer was no)
I wish that they had this in Columbus Ohio
Good story. Good people.
Thank you very much from Bangladesh has
This is brilliant. Love it.
Bring this to the rest of the country. HURRY!!
Literally, built it, volunteers WILL come.
Great idea, churches could do this too.
@@galaxywanderer sorry my mistake, was attempting to encourage other churches to do the same.
@@galaxywanderer is there a junk food aisle?
Such dignity
Dignity and healthy eating!
Drop this video friends.
Awesome!
Genius!
Is this still open?
What Stigma? Why feel a lack of dignity just because you go to a food bank?
What a lovely idea.

In Trinidad and Tobago we don't have nothing no foods banks

Can I know any food bank for my daughter near centennial College progress campus 🙏 please
Awesome
If I donate it what would I eat

I'm pretty sure the food that they go to this market of groceries is not free so either way it's still paid out of pocket we don't have one of those here but it is what it is y'all
The church probably uses donations to cover the costs of the food, it's free for the people who need food
"If you would eat it, please donate it" Sigh. You'd think that was simple logic. I like this idea of setting it up like a grocery store. It should be everywhere.
Agreed. Follow-up question, why are they manufacturing food not fit to eat?
Wait how do you get free food. I'm interested.
Food banks but you should only use them if you are need
@@stargateproductions Yeah Im a college student and dont have much money. Do I just go to a local one and get free food?

This Victorian food bank looks much more like a supermarket than a food bank, and looks more professional than the typical American food bank!
