Agreed, as someone that lives in Las Vegas where it's sunny 99% of the time, this rain scenery in an beautiful old village surrounded by mountains was absolutely spectacular.

I think the rain is gorgeous, I spent a lot of my life in the high desert. I'd love to visit Shirakawa-go one day, during a rainstorm like this even. It's so serene, quietly beautiful, everything seems to gently teem with life. It's so somber and peaceful. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Funny you bring this up. I lived in the beach and desert areas of Calif for 32 years, and then moved to the coastline of the Pac NW…..and I am FASCINATED by the rain and the sounds of it. I have been here now in the Pac NW for 30 years and I LOVE IT. It’s green, wet, and gorgeous.

Recommend EVERYONE to go here. We loved visiting Shirakawa-go. Lots of history. The artistry of these Gassho houses is beautiful. Love the roofs. Got to watch one roof being replaced. Beautiful anytime you go. But very pretty with snow on them. The water system in case of fire was very cool too. People are super sweet. We ate at an udon place. Tiny. The restaurants are great! Their ice cream is sooooooo good.
Shirakawa-go was an absolute treat when I went in 2014. It seemed to also be off-season, there was barely anyone around apart from our group. There was a green tea station and a small side room where you could just sit down, look out of a big door and enjoy the calm scenery while drinking some tea. It was probably the most serene five minutes I ever had the pleasure of spending. Marvelous place.
All of the above! The thickness of the thatched roof is like nothing I've ever seen. The scenery was so peaceful and relaxing. And....the BEEF, of course! Thanx for taking us along on your journey, STJ.

IKR! Thank you! I thought i was the only one here who loves rain. The fog, especially, made a little safe cocoon out of the village, the rain cutting off outside sound. Just like a fairy tale. 🤗
I've read about this sort of in-house village sericulture -- people living on the ground floor would find their daily lives accompanied by the soft sounds of the silkworms munching on leaves upstairs.
The rain makes it look even greener - so beautiful.

When all the travel barriers are down you really must host a travel group once or twice a year. You have such a good eye to have a nice vacation without running around trying to do everything.
I watched another You Tuber who was a travel agent and his followers talked him into hosting a cruise. We attended his first trip and there were just over 115 who went on the cruise so he not only got his trip for free but also another room for his family members.
Japanese carpentry is always so pleasing. That floor upstairs, those railings, the room dividers, just everything. If I was a gajillionaire I would surround myself with that beauty and simplicity.

What a beautiful area! Like something from a film. The rain just added to the atmosphere. We loved seeing both the village and the restaurant. Cooking the meat reminded me of going to eat Korean BBQ with friends here in my own city. However the meat was not as high quality as that. That meat looked delicious. 🤩

That village may be a huge tourist draw, but the rice fields are so beautiful in full growth like this. The rain on green-growing rice fields is so beautiful.
You may feel the rain took away from the video, but it did not. I love the rain. We like to go to the mountains here in the winter and love it when it gets rainy and foggy. Beautiful Gassho-style houses. Are there places where people can spend the night in one? Are there people living in any of them in that village?

The voices of history whisper through the village, seeking the ear of those inclined to hear them, as the rain taps out a staccato rhythm...
Personally, I think rainy weather like this is very nice. Especially for places like this. It creates a really wonderful ambience, and inspires poetic thoughts. This was a great way to break up your usual content. I've noticed the non-ferry videos usually don't get as many views, which is really a shame. People don't know what they're skipping over.
Agreed. I too think that the rain adds a lot to the impression of this village - simply by way of illustrating how much less control about our environment we used to have in ages past.

@@educationforblind6362 A musical term. I recommend looking it up if you want to know details. The way I understand it, it is a way to (for lack of a better word) emphasize single notes. To make them distinct in a way, compared to a more "flowing" melody.

It didn't rain since a month in my city so the sight of the rain and the sound of it felt so refreshing.

We were there in 2016 for a "Higurashi" pilgrimage. I had no idea at the time, and this was my introduction to, UNESCO Sites. It was snowing when we were there. We came from Kyoto. The tunnel the bus went through right before we got there was SOOOO long. I was hoping you went that way, but no. I can't wait to go back.
The rain just makes it more like Hinamizawa lol. From what I've seen the village is very tourist friendly, but how was your trip? Would it be enjoyable to visit if I don't speak fluent Japanese?
@@razzKey In Japan in general, pretty much everything is in English. Especially the cities. This is a World Heritage Site. They expect tourists and are designed for it. Places that were under construction/renovation when I was there look really good in the video. I STRONGLY suggest the observation point he couldn't go to. You'll recognise the view immediately.

The Wada house was once a private home and still is, though the private portions are not open to the public. It's about 160 years old.

@@feiryfella 160 is very old in Japan, where houses were made mostly of wood, paper and straw (The Three Little Pigs!! The only stones were typically in the foundation, with the beams perched on top of them), and where fires, earthquakes and other natural disasters are common in most parts of the country. In the modern age, with cheap, modern construction materials, the assumption has long been that your house won't last much beyond your 30-year mortgage, which is why Japan is one of the few markets in which most homes actually LOSE most of their value over time. That seems to be changing a little, slowly, but talk of new "100-year homes" is coming from only a handful of builders.
@@feiryfella Due to seasonal temperature differences and high humidity in summer, condensation tends to occur in Japan and building materials do not last long. Nails in particular rust easily and corrode the wood around them. However, if stone or brick construction is used, people cannot withstand the heat of the Japanese summer due to poor ventilation.
They are also less resistant to earthquakes than timber.
Therefore, materials with good air permeability, such as wood and paper, were suitable for building materials in Japan. Naturally, however, the lifespan of wood as a building material is far shorter than that of stone or brick.
Temples and shrines have adopted and developed construction techniques that do not use nails. However, this method requires skilled craftsmanship and is expensive to process.
Gassho-zukuri thatched roofs are relatively long-lasting but require a great deal of labour to construct, so they declined after tiled roofs became more common, and now cost between USD 80 000 and 150 000 to replace.
In an ageing and less populated village, they would not last for 100 years without protection as a cultural asset.

Steeper roofs are sometimes necessary with thatching. It depends. Snow is definitely a good reason for them to be so very steep.

Even though most people like the sunshiny post card picture perfect weather for a trip, I've always found that when it rains or the weather is poor, you get the real look and feeling of a place. It's also nice to have a hot cup of tea (or sake in this case) and a snack to appreciate the subtle beauty of a destination.
I would love to see Japan again. I doubt it will happen.
The gassho-zukuri houses are wonderful. I visited Wada house myself. They are ingenious. With the irori fire inside, the roof collected smoke. The main trade of the Wada family, who built the house, was textiles (so it was both a private home and a business, really). They kept the cloth in the roof; the smoke protected it from the moths. Brilliant!
Next time you visit Takayama, I recommend you visit the Museum of Modern Art there. It is full of treasures; I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil the surprise. You can get there from the station in a London bus. Yes, you read that right, in a _London_ bus!
Its proper name is 'Hida Takayama Museum of Art' and it seems it may be closed now, which is a tragedy if true.
