Have you ever given thought to how it feels like living in Pakistan and that too, as an Indian Diplomat? Today, in Episode-11 of The Gaurav Arya Podcast, we have Ambassador Ruchi Ghanashyam, a woman who spent three years of her life in the capital city of Pakistan, Islamabad, during 1997-2000. Ruchi Ghanashyam joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1982. During her career of thirty-eight years, she worked in various capacities at the Ministry of External Affairs, the Government of India, including as director (Pakistan) and secretary (West). Outside India, she served in the Indian embassies in Damascus, Kathmandu, Brussels, and Islamabad, as well as the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, New York. She was India’s high commissioner to Ghana, South Africa, and the UK, where she retired in 2020. She has also written a book: An Indian Woman in Islamabad in which she writes about her eventful tenure in Pakistan. In conversation with Major Gaurav Arya (Retd.), Ambassador Ruchi Ghanashyam talks about her tenure in Pakistan, a tenure filled with events like the IC814 Hijacking, the 1999 Military coup in Pakistan, etc. Dealing with ISI agents, being under constant surveillance, and hunting for houses in Pakistan, she recalls it all. Pakistan is murdering history, says Ambassador Ruchi Ghanashyam on the question of education in Pakistan. Pakistani generals have a history of lavish living. Quoting this, Ruchi Ghanashyam says that the Indian Army has a sense of pride for the nation. Being India’s former high commissioner to the UK, she also gives her view on the Khalistan issue and Dr. S. Jaishankar's diplomacy. In India-Pakistan this is happening on routine bases. Not only the diplomats but even the common visitors are under surveillance in both the countries. So why lament over such things. Fundamentalists orientations in both the countries are the culprit.

Sir, today's podcast is just like Espionage documentary.
A Diplomat(IFS) lies overseas thinking that he is doing it for the country's best interest. A bureaucrat (IAS) lies to please its political master. A law enforcer (IPS) lies to please its bureaucratic whip master. A politician lies in and out of country far and wide not in the interest of the country BUT for its own personal betterment.

And how others who are superseded in the bargain accept or deal with it ? Also the fact that many of them get extensions and / or take over as Presidents in a coup ……this time the power equations and interactions of the Army , politicians and judiciary is on a different trajectory …what might one expect going ahead as to who might replace Asim Munir when he’s due to retire soon ??

Does the Indian syllabus teach how Pakistan took part in Kashmir in October 1948, even though India is five times larger? Does it explain how Pakistan defended its territory in the 1965 war and fought bravely, even though no side achieved a clear victory and you were a bigger country?
