  • A new paper from the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister reveals a growing economic disparity among Indian states. Southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana alongside Gujarat and Maharashtra in West are driving post-liberalisation growth, while once-dominant states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal face stagnation. The report, authored by Sanjeev Sanyal and Aakanksha Arora, points to agriculture and identity politics as major hurdles to growth. Dive into the regional trends shaping India’s economic future. So, basically the rich states remain rich and poor states remain poor. But Bengal and Punjab are the 2 states who were among the most rich and now are becoming poor as time passes. We can blame Khalistan terrorism in 80's and 90's for Punjab's performance but there was no insurgency in Bengal , they have themselves to blame. Once the best city in India Kolkata has been ruined.

You are living under which rock West Bengal was the home of communist insurgency and west bengal biggest problem is it still gets 5% less in taxes than it gives, more over west bengal was essentially a land locked state as it didn't have any port to dock even the medium sized ship and is heavily plagued by local goons

We know about post-1991 story. Would like to know the post-2014 story. Post-1991, all those with pre-existing strengths capitalised on them.
Same happened in case of private sector. Pre-existing corporates from License Raj era, were the first to benefit as they had easy access to credit and could get around restrictive labour laws.
Please do a story on why labour reforms are important. Also, please talk about reforms in accessing credit. Your previous episodes, done a few years ago, were not as popular, as you are today.
And decline of UP/Bihar seems to have plateaued in recent years.

My hopothesis is this doesn't paint the accurate economic picture, I would argue, high industrial development around and in certain pockets in certain states led to the some states manifesting above national average PCI but in contrast peripherical districts of those states have not benefited from this fruit of growth of the states. For example western Maharashtra has industrial clusters therefor economically developed, but the same is not true for middle and east Maharastra. I understand here the context was socio-political enviorment but still, there is some degree of truth to what I am saying, we need to understand what are the factors at play here.

Bihar, Jharkhand, WB will never develop because of communist policies. And dumb politicians belonging to lower caste ruling it. They just want to be in power and the cost for it is rampant illiteracy and poverty. People of these states based on caste of the leader not his capabilities to uplift them. Just imagine OBC CMs ruling both UP and Bihar and destroying a state completely. Failure of Kolkata as a port and the communist policies of WB has cost the entire eastern India. With decline of Bhadralok from politics of WB we saw a rise of communists and a steep decline in the intellectual awakening that was taking place in WB.
UP is seeing hope under Yogi with manufacturing industries being set up in the state, and better law and order due to relative decline in criminal elements within politics.
In short ideology matters and guides a state to a certain economic trajectory. But much of Indian voters r dumb to understand all this. They will continue to vote for unyielding freebies and communist policies of instant gratification. We will never see rapid growth in Bihar, WB , Jharkhand just because the people at large are not of sound intellectual capabilities.

Needs social change before economic change. Don't vote on Hindu Muslim issues, don't vote on mandir masjid issues, get your head out of religion and caste politics, focus on education, education and education. Focus on poverty alleviation. Your states are dragging down Bharat/India. India would have become a middle income economy if BIMARU states performed at par with South and West States of India.

Ever heard of states like Gujrat , Maharashtra and Haryana. They also vote much on the basis of religion like UP , Bihar and Gujrat is top in that list. Remember in 90's during the peak of Ram mandir movement BJP lost most of the elections in UP , Bihar. It's the caste based politics which destroyed these states where all castes are pulling down each other so that no one will get ahead of them, as a result everyone remains backward and no one gets ahead in life. People very easily mention Hindu-Muslim politics but fail to mention caste politics which shows a clear bias in their analysis.

Whatever stride UP made under BJP, the momentum should continue. I want the Yogi govt to enforce law and order even more and kick out the Brij Bhushans and zamindar netas who know nothing other than Hindu Muslim Dalit OBC. We need better young leaders focussed on overall development of the state and creating revenue streams to fund planned projects.

coastal states have bigger advantages over landlocked states when its comes to commerce and trade. For example, any exports from India will be done by businesses operating in such states. Indian govt. is business-minded, its policies work well with industrial and commercial sectors. i agree that vote bank politics harms central-northern states. As large population of India lives in north, political parties try to appeal their sentiments for quick gains, which has inverse effect on economy and society. India is called krishi pradhan desh because of how many people agricultural sector employed in comparison to other sectors.

Given the large amount of inflow of foreign exchange from overseas Malayalees, a government more hospitable to small medium private business would have registered much better economic performance.

I think the changing point was in late 90ties when a foreign car company was about to be built it's manufacturing plant and communist part took protest too far. It ended up in tamil nadu and boomed the car manufacturing cluster in tamil nadu that was a big miss. Again benefit of communist party is human development index is highest I wonder in Kerala. It's all about balance, without the remittance from NRI this could not have happened with such strong anti private sentiments. Which is ironic as in the end they are working in private corporation just in different country. Which also created the present low employment rates in Kerala. So many well educated people but no jobs.

  • @manivignesh.k6526

The reason for Tamil Nadu's lag before the boom was because the Dravidian parties were laying the ground for it. The improvements in educational opportunities and policies empowering various castes eventually powered growth when economy liberalized.
It continues to benefit from this diversified growth. If not for the lag in IT sector and slowdown of textiles in the last decade TN would have retained it's educated youth who are now going to Bangalore and low skill workers from moving to services jobs.
The current push for manufacturing will hopefully help the low skill worker families and built a strong local consumer economy.
