- Many of us learn to tie knots where the strand crosses over in the same direction for each of the two steps. This doesn't technically secure it as a knot and many of us will double knot as we know this slides out.

I needed this! I always end up doing a surgical knot.
I just did this knot, continued with my project, and then decided to pull out the yarn to backtrack to the previous knots that were magic knots so I could tie square knots. When I got to this new (for me) square knot, however, it came apart immediately. So, the magic knot doesn’t work, nor did this square knot. And I know for a 100% certainty I did it exactly as shown. This is very upsetting because I make premie blankets and now am wondering how many of my blankets out there have had my knots unravel? 😢
I use a surgeon's knot because the square knot can come undone.
I just finished a blanket for my grandson and used this knot on all the color changes. After washing most of them came loose 🤷♀️ do I need to super glue them? This happens on every product I make it seems like. I thought I had finally found the answer in this knot 😭
Very slippery yarn like Simply Soft can also slide out of the square knot. Ask me how I know..... 😭

Never tie knots. No knots in crocheting. I have never put a knot in anything I made.
And what exactly do you do when you need to add a new color or a new skein? Also... there are no rules in crochet and certainly not a "no knot" rule if there were any. Simply working over the tail doesn't work for items that eventually need to be washed, they will come out at some point.
You slip it on and continue to crochet. Never crochet over the tail, always weave your ends. When you weave it in, go up, down, up. I’ve been crocheting for over 40 years. Never have I put a knot in anything. I don’t even put a knot to start my chain. You do a roll twist. Nothing has ever come apart. If a knot comes out of the skein I clip it off & keep going. To add a new color complete the stitch, add new color to completed stitch not in the middle of the stitch. You won’t have that little bit of color that doesn’t really belong there. When I was very young I took crochet classes with my Nanna. First rule was..no knots in crocheting or knitting, It stuck in my head. I wash everything before I sell it. My items have been washed many, many times. Nothing has ever fallen apart in over 40 years and no one has ever complained or returned a single thing. Happy crocheting.
