THANK YOU! I love this. Like all gardeners, I have fails each year too. But I have way more successes than in the past, thanks to whom my husband calls "your youtube lady." Thank you both for sharing your knowledge and creativity with us.

This is helpful for everyone. I tried a bulb in pots this spring I’ve never planted before. Yes-it was a lesson. I will try again because I love the aspect of constant learning in gardening and I love that particular flower. Neighbors think I know so much but I don’t, I know a few things. I am in a perpetual state of learning as I try new things-it’s GREAT!

This was a well thought of video. I have been gardening a long long time. I have never seen a video where failure to thrive plants were talked about or shown. I was thinking I was the only one with failures. This had been a great year for my day lillies but I have never had so many unexpected plants die. So disappointed but seeing he video was a enlightened experience. Thank you so much. Love watching you and your family.

I have a limelight hydrangea that didn't bloom this year because it was shaded by a maple. Trimmed enough branches for it to grow tall but to late to set flowers. Will be keeping the tree pruned.

Thank you so much for this video Laura. I always thought you just put anything in the ground and it grew beautifully. I was getting discouraged with the plants that just didn’t perform the way I had hoped. There are so many things to consider with a garden that I hadn’t anticipated but I do want to keep trying and learning from past failures if possible. It is encouraging to know that someone with your knowledge still struggles with issues in the garden.

Thank you. I do the same thing. I show the good, but I also point out the fails. I don't want someone to ruin their plants by trying something that was awful. Learn and grow isall I can hope to do. Thank you for putting this video out there

Our fails let us know when we should do something different the next season. I learned quite a lot about the finer points of watering this year and water pH. My deep well has a higher pH than I realized so chlorosis issues. New plan for watering. Good luck to everyone trying to figure out their garden spaces!

Laura we live in Vancouver Canada . We have arborvitice and had the same issues . No herbicide was near them. We have found that when it's really hot they go into a shed (my word) even with lots of water. But so far they have bounced back.

thank you! you are so right: it's encouraging to see the professionals struggle with stuff, too, so thank you for showing us yours... it's been a bad year all over for plants, hasn't it?? the weather is definitely changing where i live: the things i used to be able to plant just cannot survive in our now very hot, intense sun summers.... and it is discouraging to work so hard, have a fairly pretty spring, then BAM! watch it fry, curl up and die in the heat... not to mention the price of water! i'm working on my 2022 plans now, and making changes/tweaking around what worked and what didn't... here's to gardens and gardeners and our resilience and willingness to keep on keepin' on!! we never give up! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤

I had many fails this year, just too hot and too dry for new plants. I stopped planting and will try later this month. It has been so disappointing and of course expensive. I don't spray, I just blast the webs out with the hose. YOU have squash bugs, and we have fought them all summer. I water them and it brings the adults up and I "squash" them and then I pull the leaves with the eggs and I have found entire leaves loaded with the nymphs. HIDEOUS!!!! So, as we get toward fall, I'm hoping the plants will start new growth, and blossoms. I have SOME fruit but the bugs will just devour the blossoms. Not planting squash next year, I'm exhausted.

The tomato plants will recover so let them be in the ground, you have such a long growing season. My tomato plants did the same in June/July when we had very hot suddenly and they had leaf curls so bad and didn't do much for 5 weeks, but in August once it cooled down they are in full bloom and are loaded with tomatoes now. Next year I will have a shade clothe ready. I have a small glass cold frame it gets very hot when the sun is out here in Sweden.

Blue Hubbard is often grown as a trap crop for squash bugs and cucumber beetles because apparently it is very attractive to those bugs. So I think if you think of it like that you get to move that one to the win column. 😀

Laura, something to consider about the browning arborvitae behind the cold frame is the metal structure that is right behind them. The 100+ heat beating on the metal structure probably cause an 'oven like' environment and just baked and dehydrated the plants. Just something to consider for future planting there and possible replacements.

Spruce needs to entirely dug up and everything removed and then replanted. There is NO way around it. Correct it properly instead of half-heartedly. You also need more wood chip mulch over all your trees shrubs and perennials, esp for your dry and windy and very hot climate. Relying on drip in an era of climate change is laughable. As your location is a xeric climate, you should demonstrate planting more xeric plants instead of water hogs.

In reference to the wire cages. We ordered two evergreens many years ago zone 5a, the crew that planted them left the burlap twine and cage in place. By the second year they were showing great distress. I did everything I could but nevertheless they still died. When we dug them out those wire cages and the burlap we're all still intact. 1 wire cage I still can't get out of the ground and it's not eroding. I've come to realize always remove all cages twine and burlap no matter what the nursery tells you. We have since replaced those evergreens and spread out the roots so that they didn't girdle now we get multiple feet of growth every year. That definitely was an expensive lesson to learn. I hope your tree does well your property is looking beautiful.

About the wire spruce tree-you’re probably ok digging out that tree, taking the wire off, and then putting that tree back in. I’ve been moving young trees this year on my property and they seem to bounce back really well if you just make the hole a little bigger, and add a little compost, and then keep the area moist for the next month. This June, I moved 2 Leyland Cypress that had already been planted a year, and they look great.

My husband's idea of gardening is "one and done". You have a plant, you find a spot for it and plant it and there, done. Gardening in my experience is more fluid. I'm no expert, just have personal experience. I love how the row of gorgeous supertunias was a "fail" spot. Hubby built me a 6' window box on our shed. The first year I filled it with all kinds of plants, million bells, fuchsia , ivy, and double impatiens. By the end of the summer my "failed" box was FULL of double impatiens and you could see little else. From that time on, I just planted the impatiens and some ivy for spillers. Why fight perfection?

Laura as someone who has been doing landscaping for over 50 years, I can tell you a bit about the browning. I am on cape Cod and I have noticed the Alberta Spruces and Arbor Vitaes browning out. I put on a white glove and grabbed a spruce branch and there it was red streaks. Red Spider loves hot humid weather to attack Alberta Spruces treatable using Sevin or Isotox. Now for the large shrubs browning out I have seen that all over Cape Cod. A perfectly beautiful row of plants with a few browning out. We were exceptionally dry last year and I think there are a couple things at play. First a very dry hot 2020 summer and not much wet weather snow etc in the winter causes dehydration. Secondly although I have never seen it it could be the hot humid weather has also caused red spider on the Arbor Vitaes . I know you are watering properly I would try for the heck of it to use white glove or paper towel grab a branch see if there are any red streaks. just my thoughts but you are not alone it is everywhere on Cape Cod as well.

Yes, this is very encouraging to me. I aspire to have a beautiful lush garden such as yours and learn so much from you. I've had some fails this year as well. But you've told us in past videos that if say a young tree dies that sometimes it just happens. Doesn't always mean I did something wrong. I always appreciate your honesty and helps. So yes, you're always encouraging. Thanks Laura ❤

I had two lavender (out of 15) fail and a whole section of dianthus that never took. I moved flower pots into areas that failed, and then moved my daffodil bulbs under a tree… but recently realized it won’t get enough sun after the leaves come out! So many mistakes. Thank you for sharing yours and, often times, solutions or how you’re going about working with them.

Won’t your daffodils be up and blooming before the tree leafs out? They might be fine where they are.

Your daffs will have finished by the time your trees leaf out. They'll be fine! Add some bluebells! They come out after the daffodils, and love the dappled shade under the trees.

Thank you so much for sharing your fails with us.. I feel like my garden is never complete and there are always spots that don’t look great or aren’t in bloom. I also wanted to say I’m completely shocked someone turned you in for trying to save the quail eggs!!!! You and Aaron are the sweetest couple and I’m so thankful you share your channel with all of us. I will never understand people who comment negatively or dislike your videos… just know you have so many followers who understand and appreciate what you do! ♥️

I love seeing the arborvitae progress along each fence line! The old “moon garden” tree hedge is looking phenomenal! I would love to see a video doing some growth updates with those and the boxwood hedges at some point. 😁

CURIOUS: What ended up happening to the gazebo? Did it ever get reestablished at the community park? Or, do you consider that a fail?

Arborvitae just…fail. In Denver here, basically the same climate and soil as yours, they are (were) so popular but every day you drive around and see catastrophic death for one reason or another. Lots of tree nurseries stopped selling them in recent years. Unless you’ve got decent shade and wind protection, they’ll probably suffer. I’m planning on trying upright junipers instead 🤞

I’ve seen some people use round up around big aged tree bases to kill weeds, instead of weed eating. Does that do damage over time, would it eventually kill the tree?
    Love watching!

Roundup say 'No,' but evidence is proving otherwise. It takes YEARS for it to damage and kill an old tree, but it WILL kill it. And, by the time you realise there's a problem, it's probably too late to save the tree. Avoid Roundup at all costs.

Growing tomatoes in high heat/wind areas.....I think it's best to let them sprawl over the ground. It gives the ground shade, it's a natural mulch, and they can withstand more heat and wind that way. At least that's what I've experienced in my hot, dry conditions. Thanks for sharing your fails. We had mostly fails this year with drought, grasshoppers, and deer eating everything in sight.

Thank you for sharing your fails. There are 2 quotes , I always remind myself of: if you are not killing plants, you are not really stretching yourself as a gardener - J C Raulston. A successful gardener knows to throw out the dead plants-anonymous.

Like you, we planted a hedge of 65 arbs. 2 days later we were hit with a 55 mph wind. Half of these arbs aren't going to make it 😭😭 It is good to see a video like this because I do at times get so discouraged. Thanks love this chanel.

Hi Laura, Im a landscaper from South Africa. It looks like your conifers are suffering from something called "Italian aphid". It's a sucking insect too small to see but it causes brown patches and the eventual death of any kind of conifer. You can soil drench with a systemic insecticide called Koinor. After losing one of a pair in a garden once I have always kept a sharp lookout for the tell tale signs of brown patches - if you treat them early enough you will save the trees
