How many of you know someone or personally keep or use a 22 long rifle firearm for self/home defense? I know there's some of you out there, and this video is for you. Are 22 hollow points worth buying? If they don't penetrate far enough to reliably hit vital organs, I don't think so. I do a gel test comparing some Federal bulk 22 lead round nose, CCI Mini Mag Hollow Points, and the CCI Velocitor 22s and go over my results.
Once again, I am by NO means a ballistics expert. Take everything you see here with a grain of salt and infer your own opinions from the test.

The faster something goes at a liquid, the more resistance it encounters. So a lot of times I see stronger ammo penetrate less.

No doubt. All I had to see was the expansion on the 2nd shot. Considering the type of threat environment we are in now, over penetration is a serious concern. I think its the safest home or personal defense option out there, unless you are dealing with body armor.

Never underestimate a 22 lr for personal defense. Used and aimed properly will stop a problem. Don't expect a large wound cavity but if you aim well it won't matter.

I have two 22 pistols, two 22 rifles among other firearms. In 7 yrds, I will put 10 rds in an inch circle in about 5 seconds. I can't do that with a 9mm. The M&P15/22 with 25 mag, will turn anything within 25 yards into swiss shit very quickly i dont care what brand ammo you use. I put a predator V3 red dot on it, its not even a challenge. it also eats any 22 ammo. the pistol for carry or home defense is a bersa thunder 22. Again, zero problems with any 22 ammo, quick 10 round dump is 2 inch group 7yrds. CCI mini mags or velocitors are what i use for defense. anything else will work for target. you send 10 rounds at a dum dum in about 5 seconds, he's done for, and at 7 yards, you probably wont miss. yes, i can shoot great with my 9mm pistols, my wife does ok too. But with the 22 pistol or rifle, she will kill you dead confidently without being nervous. For me the shot placement is incredible. Ammo choice is secondary.

Agreed! Mag dump and unless multiple targets, and when I carry it, I don't even feel its presence. Confident that it will handle 99% of encounters where I can't disengage. The typical assailant won't be thinking about the caliber he's getting hit with, just that he's getting hit.
I just watched a video earlier showing that a 22 semi-auto can fire 5 rounds for every 9mm round out of a semi-auto.

The primary way a bullet causes damage to an animal is through the permanent cavity it leaves - the hole that is created as the bullet passes through skin, bone or flesh. This wound channel is the same diameter as the bullet/bullet fragments and is a function of bullet penetration and expansion.
A secondary way that a bullet causes damage is by the temporary cavity it causes. When a bullet hits soft tissue, the tissue acts more like a fluid than a solid as it gives way and tries to absorb the bullet’s energy. The bullet does not immediately penetrate the tissue; instead, it makes an impact crater that stretches in until the bullet penetrates the tissue.
As the bullet continues its path, it violently pushes the tissue ahead of it both directly and indirectly in such a way that the tissue is stretched beyond its elasticity and is cut and torn as it quickly tries to return to its original position and beyond.
In essence, a bullet going through soft tissue has the same effect as dropping a stone into a pail of water - if the stone (bullet) enters the water slowly, the water (tissue) displacement is so gradual that is has little effect on the surrounding molecules. If the stone (bullet) enters the water (tissue) with a lot of momentum, however, the surrounding molecules have to act a lot more quickly and violently, resulting in a splash (temporary cavity). Temporary cavitation is important because it can be a tremendous wounding mechanism.
Both permanent and temporary cavities are greatly affected by a bullet’s design, sectional density, and velocity at the time of impact.
@random Person wrong, "temporary wound channels" lead to punctured organs, fragmented bones, nervous responses, and nerve damage. They are the main reason people were so afraid of 5.56 when it came out especially with the channels created by fragments

@random Person both rounds actually have very similar trajectories and muzzle energies, they feel very very similar when shot at least for the 22 tcm 9r. My understanding is that rock island did it intentionally to offer a heavier payload with similar penetration and recoil

The one other round I wish you had is the CCI Mini Mag copper plated lead round nose round. That’s what I carry in my small pocket pistol. I doubt the hollow points would expand from a short barrel anyway. But as you chose in your test today, penetration is more important than expansion , if the hollow point fails to reach a vital area. I would like to see you redo today’s tests using a pistol and comparing the results.
If you didn't know, Paul Harrell does an excellent video where he tests this exactly, only on a meat target. "Leather jacket to simulate skin, pork chops to simulate a pectoral muscle, pork ribs, watermelon to simulate lung tissue, more pork ribs in the back, and the whole thing covered by four layers of denim." Think I got that right...
They all went threw a person, any one in the center of your chest and it over, now imagine about four of any of these in your chest
The only one that might have fully penetrated is the solid round nose. Penetration in ballistics gel isn't a 1:1 comparison for penetration in a human body.

Assuming they penetrate through bone, possibly but not likely.
Shot placement is everything, location, location.
Imagine you shot the perfect location but not enough penetration, you die.
For example if I shoot the rushing bear's head, but doesn't penetrate the skull, I'm dead.
Penetration is very important.

.22 LR is a very capable round for self defense, contrary to what caliber queens may say.
Main thing is to make sure that good, quality ammo is used (packaged in trays, not in bulk packs), to have a round goes "bang" every time.
.22 LR is the lowest recoil out there, so that it gives more rounds in less time and more rounds accurately on target.
Less cost to practice and less cost to supply your defense needs. What's not to like?
For a pistol, probably better to use round noses (rather than hollow points) to facilitate better feeding.
For a rifle, hollow points (as demonstrated in the video) are a good choice.

I’ve been shooting 71 years. 22 is no joke.
firstly and most importantly, your assessment is spot on and i agree. personally speaking, although i have some, think 22lr hp's sure are cool and fun to explode small things with, they are marketed for small game and varmints which can actually be a bad thing depending on how you look at it. i once had my marlin model 60 loaded with cci stingers while squirrel hunting. had to take a body shot at a big, and i mean Big fox squirrel at a distance of about 25 yards. sure did the job, but did it TOO well, nearly blew it in half and damaged alot of meat. most hi or hyper velocity 22lr hp's would do this. so on one hand hp's are overkill on something small, but because of the lack of penetration, UNDERKILL on something bigger. but i will tell you of 1 exception to that rule while once doing my own penetration test. the medium was 1/4 inch thick squares of wood paneling i ad cut up, the rounds were remington thunderbolt which is a standard 40 gr solid, and the cci stinger which is the 32 gr hyper velocity bullet. the main body of the thunderbolt penetrated deeper than that of the stinger, but the interesting part was that slivers of the stinger penetrated deeper than that of the thunderbolt and i have read stories that the thunderbolt is supposedly the deepest penetrating 22 lr round there is, at least the older stuff is. the moral of the story is no matter what 22lr round you use shot placement is the key and the standard and by far the lower cost bulk 22lr 40 gr solids will dispatch small and bigger game up close, or at further distances as well, or better on the average than higher cost hp's. also there could be the issue of more wind resistance with hp's making them less accurate AND lower velocity at for instance, 50 plus yards. there could also be feeding issues with picky semi autos. i have only 2 weapons, its all i can afford right now. one is my edc which is a taurus g2c 9mm, and a basic new marlin model 60 22lr. they both stay loaded all the time and i gotta tell ya in a home invasion or shtf event, i'm more inclined to grab the marlin first. but you asked if we had any ideas for vids wed like to see you do, i have one. if you can get ahold of any, id like to see you match some aquilla sss, thats sniper subsonics, 60 gr 22lr rounds, against another solid of your choice for accuracy and penetration. word has it that the sss round requires a certain twist of rifling that most of our common 22's dont have to stabilize
I agree with your conclusion. I use the Velocitor for hunting with my Savage MK2 which has a 21" barrel. I carry a 22lr for my everyday carry which has a 4" barrel and I use the Remington Thunderbolt. I definitely prefer the penetration of a round nose bullet in a 22lr with the shorter barrel.
.22lr is a useful carry in some situations but i wouldnt trust it for more serious scenarios.

Stingers are for thin skinned, they don’t hold together even in squirrels they blow up
I agree with you -- I would also pick the LRN ammo for self-defense.
If you strictly go off of gel tests then you might not think that 22lr is good enough, but real world application tells a very different story. 22lr is a preferred round for many hog hunters. One shot - one kill. Also, testing with actual animal (cow) bones, muscle, liver, etc..., I can assure you that the 22lr is a very capable round. The gel testing is good as a baseline to test one round verses another, but it is not a good measure of what a bullet will do against real targets.
I appreciate the work you did in comparing these loads because I was curious about the Velocitor vs Mini Mag (my preferred round). Thanks for the video.
One problem encountered with hollow points is that if used against an assailant wearing clothing, the clothing fibers plug up the cavity in the end of the bullet and it now becomes a round nose. Have seen many videos showing this phenomenom. CCI Mini mags, 40gr RNL provides higher velocity and more reliable penetration. These are what I use in my home defense auto loader.
Outstanding! The stop motion photos showing the temporary cavities really showed the difference between the three test rounds. I would REALLY like to see how each performs in ballistic gel when fired from a 4” barrel // and // or a 3” barrel. well...it's October 2020 and we are running on vapor as far as ammo availability! I was fortunate to snag 200 rds of federal american eagle 38gr hp (bought with a new ruger 10/22 compact; it was very fortunate to find some federal automatch 40gr lead solids to break in the rifle & test a few of the american eagles for function & accuracy;
addendum: another shop in my area got a shipment of agulia so I snagged a few boxes of their 30gr hollowpoints with an advertised velocity of 1700fps...ran them at the end of my break-in run & you can hear a definite increase in audible report (even with ear muffs on)

Excellent video, I have many 22lr's and have many brands of ammo and type. Your right as far as the limitations of 22lr, but I usually stick with the CCI any bullet type has always been the most reliable in my semi-autos.
Did you not see the shock wave of the three? That's why the high shoulder shot when hunting deer is so effective, it's not the penetration, it's the shock that instantly stops the heart.

If a 22lr can kill a hog in one shot it can down a human with right placement. I have a 22lr for home defense only because price and ammo availability where I live, but I would much rather have a 9x19.

I got shot with a mini mag in the left thigh from approximately 4ft/5ft away from muzzle. The round hit the stiched fold of the pocket on my jeans also the fold of the 5th pocket. So that's 4 layer of Jean and pocket liner. Oh and the shirt so 6 layers. They removed the bullet from back of my thigh. It nicked my femoral artery by a hair. So had to have surgery to repair it (internal bleeding). It didn't even bleed. 20ish staples in front about 8 on the back. I've always known I was extremely lucky. But watching this video and that gel damn. I'm thinking the jeans saved my life. If not for the perfect line up of jeans pockets, that hallow would have done alot more damage. Damn....

I personally have known at least 9 people throughout My life Who have killed people in self defense with .22 LR and .22 Short . I personally defended Myself against 2 assailants with a .22 short caliber pistol ; and although they didn’t die : They were horribly injured and I stopped the threat

Experimental Grow420 : I shot one in the lung and the other was grazed ; but it was enough to make them retreat . It was only a cheap short barreled .22 short caliber revolver . Had it it been a .22 LR with a longer barrel , I would have killed them .
I would also like to see this test with a handgun rather than a rifle. Also a run of lead round that are cross point modified (AKA Phillips mod)

Nice job on the testing, good results, great expansion on both, they are dumping all their energy with very good preparation as designed. Alot of people don't survive after being hit with 22's because they didn't know they were hit until it was to late and bled to death. It might not be a show stopper, but they are very leathal according to reports.

Probably been discussed to death at this point, but worth mentioning, and you asked. For home defense with a 22lr, if that's what you got, you're counting on the bang (which is not very bangy), the threat to your invader would be having a gun pointed at them. You aren't going to be stopping crackheads or zombies that are determined. For personal defense out of a pistol, you have 1. bigger bang due to higher pressure when the bullet clears the barrel, pistols are scary and nobody is going to measure the bore.
As far a penetration... hollowpoints out of short barreled 22lr pistols have unreliable expansion at best, and the velocitor in particular needs a little more thump to open up and flower. Since it's probably not going to expand from a short barrel, it's going to penetrate deeper. It also has controlled expansion due to the design, so it might open halfway and you still get a little energy dump (though as you mentioned it's not really enough to talk about), but 2/3 shots are more then penetration is not going to be hindered by expansion.
In the end, it's not the best defensive round, and comparing it to major calibers kinda negates the point. It can't compete with 9mm or 45ACP in tests. But it can give a low-cost alternative to someone who's scraping buy and can only afford a 22lr, or someone who wants to stretch their money by having one gun for doing sort of everything up to popping prairie dogs, including being able to practice on the cheap. My 22s tend to be the guns I reach for first... unless someone kicks in my door at night, in which case the 45 comes off the nightstand.

I was pretty impressed by that performance. Without considering the difference in energy, a good .22 LR from a rifle appears to cause almost as much tissue disruption as a standard 9mm RN from a pistol. It appears Grandpappy's old squirrel gun will dead your ass just as well as a Glock 17.

22LR is a great round and are worth it. Try CCI Stinger and CCI Segmenting Hollow Points, they're wicked.
You don't catch what he saing, CCI Stinger doesn't penetrate well.
It is a Hollow Point ammo, thus, less penetration.
Nice test dude! We need more stuff like this on the internet. Personally I think .22 is enough to get the job done if need be. However I would not EDC a .22 as my primary defense weapon. A secondary, ehh. Depends on the situation I guess. Personally when I’m out I have a .380 for a secondary. Or if I’m wearing very light/thin clothing like in the middle of summer and I’m trying to conceal, then I will only carry my .380 because it’s just a bit easier to conceal in that situation compared to my smallest 9mm. My thought on the .22 though is that for my situation I just don’t think there’s anything to gain. I doubt I’d be able to find anything smaller then my .380 by a real difference. And I know my .380 is going to have more power then a .22. But hey I guess if someone just really doesn’t like recoil, or for some reason just really loves .22s. Then there you go have at it. I’m sure you’ll be just fine, I’d just be prepared to put more then one round in the target.
I have my 9 and 40 cal as my edc .. out of a rifle like an ar 15-22 or mp5 22 with a 20 or 25 mag...I would definitely use it as a defense
I like the auto-match or cci standard lrn, they are both consistent in my firearms. I recover my lead after shooting and the federal uses a pretty soft round nose that mushrooms quite well and runs smoothly in my .22 micro (modified Phoenix Arms hp22, 3" barrel). I like a good hyper velocity hollow point from a rifle for the terminal ballistic properties, they violently expand and fragment to dump more energy into small game. Remember more expansion = less penetration, when dealing with a short barrel it may be beneficial to mitigate expansion for the sake of adequate penetration through a clothing barrier.

I'm impressed more with the fact that you started with high expectations of the CCI velociraptor and low expectations of the Federal LRN, but after the tests, the results get you to thinking ..."is the faster HP really a better solution than the cheap, lowly Fed LRN for defense against a human that wants to do harm????". My opinion is that your final judgement of picking the LRN is the correct one for the right reasons. While the faster velocity HPs will surely make a larger temporary wound channel than the little solid LRN, the fact is that penetration is king in the sector of small caliber guns. A temporary wound channel is just that..its temporary. A wound channel will not amount to squat with any 22 unless the bullet hits a vital organ or an area that can do damage ( like the pelvis for instance). The deeper penetrating LRN will have greater probability of reaching vital space. There is something else though. The extra speed of the HPs is not anywhere close to being fast enough to do true hydra static shock destruction. Think AR-15 5.56 for a minute. That 5.56 projectile of say 55 or 65 grain is not much bigger than the 40 grain 22 LR. However the 5,56 bullet is up around 3,000 fps velocity. The internal tissue damage of a projectile traveling at that speed is devastating...why?...because the severe shock wave destroys organs within 6 to 8 inches anywhere around the wound channel. According to Federal engineers, severe tissue damage begins when a bullet hits at approximately 2,200 fps (not muzzle but at target). Bottom line is that essentially all pistols and revolvers, no matter whether 22,25,32,38,40,44, blah blah, ONLY MAKE HOLES. I don't have any beef with handguns since I own several. I guess that is why the armies of the world always use rifles not pistols.

I’ve used my .22 hollow points to brain shoot casualty Cattle on my friends farm from a couple of feet, and they only ever take one bullet ! Never underestimate this little bullet ! One of these in the forehead will give you’re attacker a REALLY Bad day !!
My wife has a Marlin 60 that she inherited from her grandfather. In today's circumstances, though I have other things for home defense, I thought I would learn what a .22LR can do to a body, so I've been watching videos such as yours. Though actual death may not be able to be inflicted as QUICKLY as a larger round, I think there is something else to consider. If you put a few shots into someone with a .22LR, will the sensation of being shot, and knowing they are being shot at, be enough to turn them around? If there is a mob around your house, besides having a larger round firearm at the ready, it may not seem out of the realm of possibility that if need be, firing at those (when your life is threatened) and hitting them in rapid succession, could be more than they bargained for and cause them to leave. We see videos all the time of armed robbers instantly turning and running when they are fired at, realizing their victim is in fact not a helpless victim.
Then there is also shot placement. A shot in the throat would be effective. poking holes in hollow lungs would also be effective. Hitting a rib has to hurt like hell. Being shot in the face would likely be a deterrent and cause them to leave, especially if an eye is taken out. When other members of the mob hear their fellow members scream in pain or just FEAR, realizing they are being shot up, that could cause them all to leave. If not, that's what the bigger calibers are for, or if they are on meth or something that causes them to not feel pain.
I inherited my gpas marlon 60 i really did underestimate until i had to put down a massive dog that had killed 4 of mine . so its small enough caliber to double tap i landed 2 x2s he got a good 15 yards awat before his guts spilled out . now the hallow points i had were more aggressive than this video they do their part on spreading apart on impact instead of mushrooming like these did. A 22 can travel thru car doors and windshields like butter it all depends on the angle of impact since they tend switch bounce direction regardless of the angle .

I have allways used the mini mag and subsonic. Never let me down yet. So many underestamate the 22. I wached a yt visdeo of a farmer that put down 20 cattle with a single shot to the head with a ruger 10/22 literaly droping them in there tracks.

For self defense, I'd probably choose whatever was most easily available at the time, even though I do study before ordering my ammo for whatever scenario, of hunting situation.
So, I may disagree with you here and there, I appropriate your thoughts.
I have a conversion kit for my AR so I can fire off 25 rounds in quick succession. Can't imagine that going well for any robbers
don't forget however, what shows on the slow-mo with the two that expanded. They delivered a large "bubble" that really rips blood vessels. If the bullet was to do that at a critical vein, I would think there's going to be much more damage. Sure not a one-shot stop but if you're talking about one 22 verses the other I think that's important.
Let's see the same test with a common carry 22lr handgun with a 3"-5" barrel... I'd pick the CCI 36g hallow points then...
Likely, because of the shorter barrel, they will not be going fast enough to meet the expansion threshold.
Velociter for small game hunting. Full power 40g 1260 FPS round nose for self defense. Penetration is king. People have some tough bones in certain parts of the body.

I guess the 22LR HP rounds are indeed for small game. You can see that both of the HP rounds delivered big cavities close to the entries. Actually the RN round surprised me -- it opened a fairly big cavity close to the end of the path.
Please test cci mini mag fromm a pocket pistol fragmented 22 bullet into gel with a covering of denim. I have a feeling that a round nose will fair better according to your tests.

10” of gel does not mean 10” in tissue, muscle, bone and organs. Ballistic gel is an average of the above. Also the bullet could hit a bone and deflect further into the body, pop out of a shin or stay put.
Bullets are funny like that.
Also - clear gel ISNT ballistic gel. Ballistic gel is made of actual organic tissues. Gelatin. Clear gel is not. Even if this WERE actual ballistic gel - ballistic gel is a 1:2 representation. So 2" of penetration in gel is around 1" of penetration in humans allegedly. ACTUAL gel is a representation of the AVERAGE density of bone, tissue, ligaments and fat etc.
And it doesn't represent hitting a barrier of bone FIRST, then hitting muscles and fat. So honestly it's not even a great test. Honestly I'd trust Paul Harrell's tests more than gel tests.
The temporary wound channel is a very important point in the lethality of a bullet. Pumping 2-3 rounds in to an assailant with a 22 will do the trick. Follow up shoots are easy and since most civilians don’t have the training time and resources it is the best choice in my world
There is litle point in using hollowpoints in most handguns because they are designed to expand at rifle velocities. CCI Stingers might mushroom out of a 4" or longer barrel though.
Dude you also have to look at the expansion in the slow Mo That's a nice Wound cavity
I use the small blade on an Old Timer pocket knife to “drill” the hollow point out and sometimes I cut an X across the tip also, to all the rounds I use to hunt small game with. I can testify that EVERY bullet I’ve picked out of a rabbit, a coon and even roosters when performing “rooster population control”, has mushroomed out. He’ll test, IMHO, are worthless. The TRUE tests are bullet recovery from carcasses.
Edit: never underestimate the .22r! Back in the 70’s-80’s in Appalachia, I seen my uncle drop many deer with a single shot. Yes he was a “poacher”, but he had 9 kids to feed and all land was private. I personally don’t call THAT poaching and I don’t believe that there was a Game Warden alive that was brave enough to come into those hollers and stop or arrest folks. But my point is, .a .22 will kill you DEAD.
You did a fine job on 22LR shots. They all work in gel. My 22SR sometimes jams with rounds not CCI. I think 22LR works for self-defense. But reliability is king not penetration in my humble opinion.

I fired a Velocitor from a NEF revolver with a 4" barrel at an 80 lb wild pig. I hit it behind the ear and it dropped in its tracks. The range was about 25 yards. I would use these rounds for personal defense.
I dropped a verry large raccoon at about the same distance, right behind the ear. ruger mark 4 i believe. standard 22 ammo. deadly.
You want to drop someone with a small caliber round, head shots are best. Just above the bridge of the nose, through the eye, or just behind the ear. Smaller target, but more effective than a body shot. Gut shots won't even slow someone down, though they're deadly in the long run, from sepsis. I don't want to kill anyone, but yeah I'll defend me and mine.
Dude, it will kill. I know 2 people shot by a 22. They lived but got really messed up bad it was Actually a really hard for the doctors in both cases.

Living in an apartment, I understand the concept of using a .22LR for home defense, in the event you miss.
I have multiple guns staged in my apartment, from .22WMR to 12ga (loaded with 7 1/2 birdshot, because that'll still kill a man dead and group almost like a slug fired in under 5 yards out of a 28" barrel, but be less prone to over penetration).
I'd be interested to see how CCI Maxi-Mag TNT .22WMR 30 grain CPHP fired out of a Heritage 6.5" Rough Rider would fare at 4 yards (about the distance from my couch to front door), or 3 yards (about the distance from my patio door to couch). I also keep my trusty Astra A-100 (.40S&W) next to me, and it's my carry gun, too, so if I see multiple intruders, I'm going straight for my .40S&W, which will get me to my 12ga and/or AR-15 in the bedroom. Problem with the .40S&W is I load it with barrier-defeating ammo (175gr Hornady Critical Duty), which is great for when I'm at work because I drive for a living and need the ability to shoot through a windshield or car door, as I'm most likely to encounter a bad guy on the road (where I spend a huge portion of my time), but those rounds would be really bad in an apartment if I had a miss.
So .22WMR seems like it'd be a good choice. Box says 2,200 fps, but I think the caveat there is that's out of a 16" barrel, NOT a 6.5" barrel. I imagine it'd be a lot slower out of a barrel less than half the test barrel's length. As for my AR-15, when at home, I have the CMMG .22LR conversion kit dropped in there, again, because no way do I want to have to answer for a 5.56 streaking through apartment walls and hitting someone's kid. I'd rather mag dump 25 rounds of .22LR (I use Federal 38gr CPHP, because it's $50 for 1,100 rounds, or about 4.5 cents per round) into the jackass breaking into my apartment and miss with a .22LR than miss with a 5.56. It's easy to say you wouldn't miss with a rifle, but you don't know that until you've been in a real life and death scenario. I think it's best to assume at least a couple shots will miss in the heat of the moment, and plan accordingly.

Absolutely I am a big .22lr fan I have MP5 MP5K AND MP5 22 Also Walther PPQ 22 SD Colt M4 Ops 22 For sure .22lr is not my first choice in serious scenarios BUT I can assure you with CCI Mini Mag 40gr segmented HP ammunition and my trusty Surefire Ryder 22A any of these weapons Is deadly And easily controlled And really damn quiet Nuff said? TheKalkara131 emptying a pellet gun into someone won’t kill them. Emptying a 22 mag 5-10+ rounds most carry more will kill a human or at least drop them. That’s the difference

Even cci quiet-22 40gr round nose at around 650 fps drops squirrels and rabbits with ease. The high velocity and hollow points are for varmint game and self defense.
I wonder comparison would be of a .22 out of a 16 inch barell compared to a 9mm out of say 5 inches?
I'm pretty sure the 9mm would still be more powerful. I doubt the 22 will get enough extra velocity to even come close. 5" is a pretty decent length for 9mm pistols

22 hole points are not too bad but I found out that the 22 Stingers for long rifle I prefer that over 22 hollow point
In my country (Italy) 22 is completely underestimated, being illegal to hunt with it, although widely spread among sporting shooters.

why dident you try the stinger at 1640 fps.think that is the hottest 22 long rifle there is. and i think you drop if hit by any of these .but try them in a hang gun . pistole ore revolver .

The only CCi ammo worth carrying in a *_PISTOL_* are the Stingers. At only 32gr it can get enough velocity from a 4" - 5" barrel to achieve good penetration & expansion, doing some damage.
Out of a pistol you want mini mag or federal velocitor one stingers are pretty unstable and keyhole from a lot of rifles let alone a pistol

CCI velocitors at around 1500fps are about half the speed of a 5.56 round which is normally around 3000fps. Up close that'll be devastating in self defense.

Should have put a t shirt or some fabric in front of the gel to simulate clothing. There’s a good chance the hollow pints could have gotten cotton lodged in the tip which could have affected penetration and potential expansion.

I think hollow point has not good enough penetration power for 22lr.
(for bigger caliber, such as AR-15, Hollow Point bullet still has enough power to penetrate)
For example, when you hunt a small game, it doesn't matter you use Hollow Point or Round Nose.
Both works great.
(Actually Round Nose is better because it doesn't spoil the meat a lot.)

I think Round Nose is way better than Hollow Point because the bear skin is much thicker and bear bone is much harder than small game.
Penetration is the issue in that situation.
With 22lr, lung shot means nothing.
Only head shot can stop the bear.
You must penetrate the bear skull.
So, choosing better penetration ammo saves your life.
Although the Lead Round Nose tends to less mushroom than Hollow Point, It will mushroom when hit the skull because of softness of Lead.
That's why I suggest CCI Mini Mag 40gr Round Nose, rather than CCI standard Lead Round Nose ammunition.
Anybody that doubts a .22 or for defensive purposes it works and can do the job in 2 shots it’s placement is key
I carry a glock 17 in 22 tcm9r. 2000 fps out of a 5 inch barrel. It will easily punch through level 3a armor.

If you try the hollow point with material in front it would have further penetration but would not expand because the point would get clogged. I agree, after my trials, no hollow point for me.
